  • As the days become shorter and colder I aim to make a meal that is both warming and filling and is easy to make in a mess kit. I choose lentil soup since it's easy to make and tastes really good when the mercury is falling. As usual I modified the recipe for outdoor cooking.
    I hope you'll enjoy both the video and the soup.
    Ingredients, 2 servings:
    1/8 cup oil
    ½ medium yellow onion
    1 carrot
    2 garlic cloves
    1 teaspoons ground cumin
    ½ teaspoon curry powder
    1 diced tomato
    ½ cup brown or green lentils
    1 bouillon cube of your choice
    2 cups water
    ½ teaspoon salt, more to taste
    Pinch of red pepper flakes
    black pepper, to taste
    Juice from a lime to taste
    If you are in a hurry you can use red lentils and the cooking time is reduced to 5 minutes. (but the green lentils have a richer taste)
    If you use a vegetable buillon cube you have a vegan soup.
    Gear on this hike
    - Swedish army mess kit m44
    - LK 35
    - Trangia burner

    Greetings from Romania! I had been watching Trangia videos for quite some time when TH-cam suggested me a video of yours (” Bad weather cooking on the Trangia kitchen”) which got my attention and raised my eyebrows. And after I watched this particular video I instantly hit the Subscribe button.
    Well, I have to admit that I don't usually cook, only basic things like eggs, fried or mashed potatoes and stuff like that and only for survival in case there is nothing left in the fridge :))
    But what you are doing here on your channel is absolutely amazing and if I will ever learn to cook, it will be because of you! LOL
    Your skill is amazing, your style is amazing and your gear is fantastic, too. I bought myself a Mini Trangia and now I am looking forward to buy a Series 27, that's why I watch Trangia related videos about this cooking system.
    Thank you for being on the internet, sharing with us fantastic recipes and even more, your kindness and enthusiasm.
    Hat off in front of you.

      Thank you for thoose kind words. I would really recommend you to start cooking, for several reasons. First of all it's a lot of fun, (or maybe that's just me), and it gives a large portion of accomplishment when someone tries your cooking and enjoys it, and in my opinion cooking is an overlooked and underrated survival skill. Being able to turn what little provisions one managed to scrape together into a tasty meal will greatly enhance ones will to survive.
      Good luck with your adventures and your Trangia kits, they are great and will probably last you a lifetime. Cheers!

    Great recipe, though I think a little Cayenne pepper wouldn't hurt; for that extra heat - it's hard to beat. I hear myself praising Gothenburg by saying you can be lost in the woods a five minute drive from the centre of the city and it happens to have the most beautiful airport approach I have ever seen. You seem so relaxed these days, and at home in front of the camera - I look forward to being one of the thousand subscribers very soon. One request I would love to see the clean up in a video one day please.

      I'm going out on a limb, but I suppose you want me to put the nickname "filth can" to shame, since I accused many users of the mess kit of being lazy. If so I'll make a point of including that the next time it's my kitchen of choice. Me relaxing in front of the camera is by large thanks to all of you guys and your comments. The fact that you look past my mistakes and instead focus on what I try to show has made less self conscious.

    Good to see you getting out and enjoying the fall weather. The lentil soup recipe is a winner. In my case, I have used frozen bone broth in place of boullion, with shallots or leek when available. A bay leaf adds extra flavor. Sometimes pearl barley is added or buckwheat - I’m still experimenting. Mushrooms are another possible ingredient. As you’ve stated, meat or meatless is an option. Washing it down with a dark beer or good wine also enhances the meal. Having some freshly baked bread to sop up the juices is another option. Truly a universal recipe. Thank you!

      You're right on the money with bay leaves, they are a winner in most soups and stews, and one should never stop experimenting with the recipes. I hope I'm lucky with the mushrooms season. If so, I'm sure to make some outdoor cooking from the catch. Cheers Harry!

    Thanks for the cooking. I would rather add a potato and maybe some ginger. I will try this in the coming days on my Trangia 27.

    When you said "lots of curry" , I knew your soup was going to be the bomb. I will try lentil soup in the next few days and Lots of Curry is my new saying for the coming winter. All the best sent your way and wish I could send you some Cholula hot sauce and Tabasco. Time for a beer ..or 5 .

      I hope you'll enjoy your soup, Lefty. I must confess that I abandoned Tabasco in favour of Sriracha, easy to adjust the dose to anything from "a pleasant heat" to "are you trying to flipping kill me?-hot". Cheers!

      @@RedswedeOutdoors LMAO and will do some looking for Sriracha. It must be similar to what I occasionally use which is Grinders sauce. Made from extremely hot peppers and radioactive waste.

      @@RedswedeOutdoors Update on Sriracha sauce. After looking online and seeing the Rooster on the label , realized I had some in the fridge . When I was in SE Asia ,we called it Rooster sauce. It hasn't changed in over 50 years.

    Linssoppa är så grym höstmat. Och man kan variera så mycket. Gjorde en med krossade tomater kokosmjölk och potatis häromdagen. Kryddor osv svingött.

    I wish that the military burner had the simmering, it would have been nice. But it’s probably made for boiling water and maybe melt some snow. But it has lower effect than the civilian but still to high effect for this purpose. The civilian burner is about 1000 W and the military burner is approximately 650-700W.
    What I have noticed with my burner is that the military burner makes less soot than my civilian burners. Have you noticed some difference between your burners?

    • @RedswedeOutdoors
      @RedswedeOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      So there's such a big difference between them in effect? I thought they where about the same. Thanks for that information.
      I haven't given the soot to much thought since I mostly compare the Trangia and a campfire with coniferous wood and the amount of tar that sticks to the pots. If the soot comes of with a sheet of toilet paper then it's not a bother. Cheers!

      @@RedswedeOutdoorsI have used kerosene in one of my burners, it might create even more soot than open fire 😂.
      I have calculated the effect on my burners from how long time it takes to boil 0,5 litre of 12 degree water. So there’s of course some fault tolerance in those values.
      There’s a big difference between the different military burner I have tested a couple of them, but no one was close to the civilian burner in effect.

    Crows eat tomatoes?
    (If you tap the seasoning into your hand and then put it in, steam will not travel up into the dispenser and clog it up)

    • @RedswedeOutdoors
      @RedswedeOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I always keep a brush or a scotch brite in my cook sets. If you havent burnt the food to a crisp in the bottom it takes a minimum of water to get it clean inside afterwards. The outside I clean when I get home to get rid of an excess of soot. Cheers!

      if you have had a fire collect some of the very fine white ash and use that with a few drops of water, I keep some in a little pot. I learnt this travelling in India where they use ash for cleaning their pots and pans.

    How much does a set cost?

    • @RedswedeOutdoors
      @RedswedeOutdoors  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you want an original it's impossible to say, since the hype has driven the prices through the roof, (if you can find one in decent condition, that is). If you are ok with the newly produced stainless steel replica, (PFM40 from Self reliance outfitters), it's 60 USD without a spirit burner, a Trangia spirit burner comes to 18 USD according to the prices I found online today. Cheers!
