We are seemingly in the final few days before the full release of counter-strike 2. CS2 will without a doubt have operations eventually, how long it will take for us to get one is up in the air, but if it follows a similar trend to CSGO, we won't have to wait too long ;). CSGO's first operation was pretty much just a glorified map update, but nonetheless it is interesting to look back on and I think it tells us a lot about how fundamentally different CSGO used to be.
If you read this, comment nothing. yeah I couldn't come up with one this week. i apologize for my failure, this will not happen again 🙏

Ive played countless library matches with friends, ranging from infinte nades to zeus only to actual tryharding. It would be awesome to see it get a showmatch or something at a major
*ah man... :-) what a best cool ever! nostalgia.... after 10 years later. we never see again from official operations updates... :-'(
I think it could make a cool wingman map
This is the first map I can say is like “Cods shipment”. made just to have chaos.
You can easily port the map to CS2 now.
What CS2 needs is a Experimental maps mode.
I would love to play Insertion 2 again.
Insertion 2 is awesome.
The should really do that, like a mode apart that brings a new crazy map every week
insertion 1 is best
Community highlight mode?
Each day and each week we could get a selection of maps from previous operations and workshop submissions.
videos like these make me wish there were more servers running old/generally wacky maps like these the most fun ive probably ever had was on 3kliksphilip's defenestration gamemode and i wish there were more servers that ran maps that are just less competitive. 3 lane dust2 clones get boring after a while and even nuke has started to wear on me at this point
I love penguin 🗣🗣
Gay
@@itdobelikedattho8112Yeah, and?
@@itdobelikedattho8112 I would happily make out with penguin given the opportunity
They were more fy_ style, but there were actually quite a few warehouse maps with wallbangable labyrinths of boxes back in the 1.6 era. Library is built on that tradition.
i’m a big fan of fy_ maps
Me too@@doursen
I love and miss these kind of maps. Modern CSGO is awfully boring when it comes to maps and map design.
I really hope CS2 changes this, especially because it's supposed to be easier than ever to create new maps.
@@mikevismyelement I really think Valve should just make an official version of faceits mapcore playlist, its easily the best feature of faceit other than anticheat ofc and I really think it would help make the game feel fresh consistently and allow map makers to feel seen by valve even without an operation
@@mikevismyelementit's so much easier now
@@hybridstudios1449 Every season will have a new map so it seems like they're heading somewhat in that direction at least, which is exciting.
because people just wanna play mirage and inferno. They should remove these maps for some time and introduce new ones.
It flopped here in South America. I remember joining empty server after empty server, grinding for hours against bots just to collect that gold coin.
I’m glad I did. Beats every e-pener measuring contest.
They should bring back de_library in the war games playlist, seems to fit perfectly with bank and st. marc as a demolition map
CSGO is so static now that any map that's weird like Motel and Library stand out so much. Please bring them back (along with Insertion II), Valve!
I remember everyone I played with sticking with CS:S way into 2013. I stopped playing that summer when I moved for college then after the skins update, around September, I remember looking at the Steam playercount and CSGO was at around 50,000, more than 1.6 and Source. I remember thinking "wtf? people are actually playing this now?". Then we all just switched and the rest is history.
I absolutely love these early CSGO maps, the gritty atmosphere just feels so real. Shame these are all lost to time thanks to CS2 :(
motel needs to make a comeback. it was a simpler time, running with p90 was a meta. good times
pro90 ftw!
Seaside is so nostalgic to me, It was the first map I played in cs go
Same!
I do miss having maps that kinda broke the competitive mold. Same thing happened with r6 reworked all the old maps for the better, but they lost there touch
Would love to hear you talk about the cruise hostage map from 2015? 2016? Had a lot of fun on it
your choice of words and the delivery is amazing. I love your voice and videos, keep it going man
i love insertion 2
it should get a full video!
You know it's a good day when Penguin upload a video ! 🔥
I loved old operation maps. They weren’t competitive at all but that made them more fun. Was great to have a break from the rest.
Too bad I started playing CSGO a few years after this. I wish I could have experienced this.
me too. i missed out on so much about everything.
@@Splarkszter you still can expirience this in CS:S
I miss playing community servers on these kinds of maps. Need to bring it back
I'm glad I found your channel. Lots of cool CS history. Takes me back :)
Thank you for the video and the memories :')
CSGO competitive scene was already kicking hard at that time, the question we were all asking was "so who is the best? The ones from cs 1.6 or from css?" :P until NiP settled this haha
Valve wasn't particularly trying to showcase the hostage gamemode, as you said the Steam workshop was recent and these maps were basically the best ones out there at that time, valve looked at what the community playing workshop maps enjoyed and brought it officially to the game for a few months for everyone to enjoy. It was only about the maps and, for once, a way to give credit and pay map makers for their hard work (that's why it's called "payback", after years of work for free a few map makers could finaly get a pay check ^^)
Great vid as always dude, you should do vids on all the operations
You got put in my recommended and I’ll keep watching in the future. Good stuff
Hope we get to see videos on each operation eventually! A nice little series
Would love to see videos covering some of the other operations, I started playing right before Bloodhound and even though the maps weren't quite as crazy as these I do miss them (along with the VIP missions)
This brought back many memories. Played these maps alot!
Would love to see those kind of vids about other operations :)
Btw, if you haven't noticed, de_favela is basically just a mirrored version of de_inferno with another theme.
I love the Earthbound music at the end of your videos. Please never stop using it!
bro this video just onlocked some hidden childhood memories for me. i forgot that these maps even existed at some point. crazy nostalgic.
Penguin, i love your end segment music, intensely nostalgic but i can never figure out what it is.
if there's one map I would like back to the competitive pool it would be Insertion II. Large and foggy, with multiple spawn points. Sneaking in the suburbs feeling like an actual special op and catching ct's off guard as a t from the woods. Used to play it 24/7
4:14 Motel was also part of a danger zone map called County that was in the game during operation riptide.
omg I remember this operation!! jesus thats a throwback! you just unlocked a core memory
i know you could do a video on literally each of these maps, but I think a video on maps played in 1.6/source leagues that never made the full jump to pro csgo
maps like de_season, de_lite, de_fire, de_tuscan, de_russka, de_forge, now with de_cache, etc
showcase how they were played by pros back in the day and maybe if they had a csgo remake show footage of those too
i almost wish cs2 would bring all these maps back in a separate premier queue with "classic but great layout too" maps, also have people grind on those too, maybe the top played maps in them get rotated into active duty at the end of each season
Oh my god thank you for uploading I’m sick as hell and needed a new video of yours to watch lol
Nice video. Favela was a MW2 map years before the CSGO map btw.
I absolutely miss the older operations, their world building, and the fact that the mission tracker was a literal book. It was a cute detail! And I wish that they would bring that back, genuinely.
i just found this channel today and of course you upload like 2 hours after i find you
5:00 There is a custom map set in a favela in Rio that was very famous here in Brazil, i played it today online, it's from CS 1.6 and it is years old, maybe more then one or two decades, but im not sure
4:23 You forgot to mention that the Glock had infinite ammo
It’s so crazy, I remember all these old maps, had alot of fun on them, but I never think about them.
Great content for csgo nerds, keep up the good stuff man
this is like the 3rd or 4th vid i watched and realized i didn't sub yet
definitely got one more sub now mate
When he mentioned seaside and 2019 in the same sentence it felt like I suddenly aged a little.
I have to say, this library map really looks like a map from SWAT 4 also based in a library layout wise. Thanks for the video!
This is the only Operation I got the gold coin for! I had totally forgotten about Library but remember the Thunder map really well.
Is the Library map inspired by any kind of movie or show? because damn the labyrinthian set piece is genuinely amazing for building tension.
Gj on getting sponsors I hope they pay you well
the persona music took me by surprise ahaha
I always wanted to see like submarine map similar like to Tactical Ops had (game from end of 90's similar to CS but it came out I think year or two before that, It was a mod for Unreal Tournement). It was like a big submarine with choppers above it and Countres would spawn in it or below it and would go inside submarine and try to free it.
I had the gold coin on 2 accouts. All you had to do was put the afk command and leave your pc on for 50 hours. Had some cool maps, but it was hard to find anyone playing after a while.
Ahh, Downtown was my jam back then. IDK why but I loved it. I first learned to hold Up and left on the keyboard to fly up the ladder and catch air. I remember all the choke points too. Also hiding in the dark on the second floor powerful with a suppressor. I played 1,544 hours on my coin. I is crazy to think how long ago that was... im gettin old
bro this brings back memories and this shit is so wild
I completely forgot these maps were in CS and associated them with some other game, like PayDay or some freetoplay chinese shooter. What a weird nostalgia trip recalling my first CS GO matches on these maps
I only came into CS:GO (and CS in general) during Operation Bravo, and the first one I purchased was Phoenix. To this day, it's my favorite operation, partially thanks to great the maps returning from the previous operations. In fact, I think with the exception of Museum and Library, they all came back at some point. I sadly never got to play Library, it must have been a blast. But I do see that we have the same favorites. Motel was my favorite hostage map at the time, and Seaside is to this day, one of my all time favorites, despite the fact I haven't played the map in many years. Would be cool if Seaside returned, the fast contact, fast rotations gameplay was so much fun. I'd even love to see pros play some matches on it.
a little persona 4 music for your sponsor. very nice :P
We need more realistic maps like these with realistic gunfights. They need reworks but it’s fun having maps that aren’t like every other map
the glock in motel also had 200 reserve ammo and no recoil, i remember picking it up all the time
mah drilla uploading another banger
I love both of the insertion maps, they some of the most unique maps ever
I miss when CS was able to do something for sake of fun, not for sake of serious competetivness
When CS2 had it's first previews I got excited about ragdolls having collisions with each other, only for them to disable that immediately
I remember playing Payback, but I never bought the pass. I bought Bravo and everything beyond (up until Snakebite, didn't buy), I really miss how creative maps were. I strongly remember Motel, Museum and Downtown being pretty fun because of how unique they were. Favela and Library were super interesting too.
If I'm not mistaken, a couple of maps actually ended up reappearing in later operations. I remember Downtown and Favela coming back at least once. Seaside came back like three or four times I think.
One of my first memories of CSGO is a competitive match of Motel and everyone getting lost.
I remember, 50hrs was too much for gold coin. Barely managed to get 10h for silver and keep my sanity
i remember playing the dock looking maps in 2019 when in first played csgo, are there lobbies for maps not in the current casual groups?
5:40 ohhhh the Tekken 4 Soundtrack
yessir penguin upload 🐧
seaside is one of my all time favorite maps
Oskmos, the creator of the library map and the other swedish map is a great dude! We studied together for a little while before he went on to other adventures.
6:23 I thought you were going to say, “This map is a labyrinth of sounds, smells, misdirection, and misfortune.” 😭
4:15 yooo this map looks so similar to County of Danger Zone
I remember playing Downtown, Favela and Seaside.
I feel like my dreams have early stage source graphics
oh I remember :D those were the times! I'm probably romanticising that era a lot since I was about 15 back then, but operation payback brings back fond memories :)
*i wounder why still Valve not adding to Co-op Gamemode official in CS:GO? we are only playing from Operations.*
Another Penguin banger
bros at the weapon case fighting his demons
The maps from that operation feel so nostalgic now. I remember spending hours on those maps and they were pretty fun for a casual standard game environment, they didn't need to be 100% competitive viable to be praised by the community.
The old maps were goated. I think there was one called thunder if i remember right that I used to love. Seaside was also great
*Payback look likes is forgotten operation update ever in CS:GO history.*
I LOVED library so much.
those maps are so nostalgic
As someone who started playing cs in 2019, I really hope we get some weird experimental maps for the first cs2 operation
Well, it all must start from somewhere so Im glad they tried it then and updated it
What is your opinion on climb? Also seemed like a silly map to me and I didnt play anything else during its period
I feel like museum and downtown could have been remade into a defuse map if they just changed some angles the layouts were both actually pretty fair to both sides and with proper choke points could be redone
Grinding those 50 hours for the gold coin was hell but nostalgic, was a much simpler time playing alot of these maps that might not be competitive-viable there was something special about them in random casual matches
Seaside 1 of my fav maps
ate my food to this video dont regret it
I dont know if you mentioned the fact that to level up the coin it was CASUAL matches on operation maps. it was torture
I remember library as a map where enemies just spammed negevs and m249s across spawn because all of the bookshelves were penetrable :DD
good times!
i love seaside map (but my favorite map nuke)
5:56 - that would be another "swedish map" - Those folks living there tho. That "COOP "is open monday until friday 7-16, not open on the weekend. - I bet they have the same owner as the pizzaplace...
lets go new vid!
I don't know if it's intentional but Favela layout is extremely similar to Inferno, but somehow weirder and worse.
I remember in the motel map the mapper put in a Glock on the dead terrorist in the center of the map when picked up it had 200 bullets in the mag with no recoil. Not sure how you add a gun with custom properties but it happened. Then I guess valve found out about it and it was patched out.
Now you have no option, u gotta make a series of these
I would love Community Servers to play all the forgotten operation maps
