Such a lovely and subtle rendition. Neil Tennant's version in the 80s was dripping with sarcasm, with anger, with disillusionment at the larger society. Its youthful angst and energy gave it the needed edge to propel this anthem to iconic status, a cutting commentary on modern urban life and its loneliness, isolation and despair. By 2002, Tennant's musical edges had softened and in older hands it becomes a song of gentle longing, of times gone by, of acceptance of the world as it is and his place in it. It's like the older Neil is telling the younger Neil, "don't worry. It's going to be ok in the end."
As of right now, this is the most underrated comment in this comment section.

Already a small hit in 1984 in Belgium... the rest of the world had to wait another year for this song to become a classsic. Love it still!
