A failure in 1984! Neil had the courage to "re-offer" the song in 1987! The PSB era had begun!
The 80s had a lion's share of fabulous music and this song is certainly a timeless classic. I have been Blessed with a great life that includes a vast array of fabulous music, fabulous friends & family, fabulous memories and I am proud to be an American Veteran. Happy New Year 2024 to everyone.

What some younger folks dont understand about the 80's is that it wasn't all glitz, glamour and excess...There was also a pervasive subconcious melancholy, in that we knew these times wouldnt last forever, because we were losing our "collective innocence" on many levels ...This song encapsulates that sentiment entirely, and instantly transports me back to those days... and I smile..

Pet Shop Boys understood that exchanging their 80s synth and drum machine sounds with new sounds does not help the song in any way!! That they keep it as original as possible is a great gift for their listeners. Many other artists make a Techno or unplugged version out of their hits (see Madonna etc.) just because they don‘t want to hear the original anymore. For the price that it totally kills the soul and mood of the song.
I agree. But there's exceptions. Sometimes sticking to the original isn't necessarily a must. Your examples are good. But my best example is Swing Out Sister, who've built a strong cult following built on alternate, If I may, a more euro-sophisticated approach to their songs, and in doing so have made tremendously appealing versions that fit their long time fans as adults today. "Breakout" is a perfect example of what I mean.

It must feel so great to give the world this gift of a song which has been part of the soundtrack of the lives of so many people for decades, and which continues to move them and bring them joy and inspiration. 💙
When I first visited Europe 9 years ago and toured 8 countries there, I had this song playing in my headphones for much of the trip because I remember watching the music video when I was growing up and dreamed about travelling to other parts of the world...and here it was finally happening! The sound of Pet Shop Boys also felt quintessentially British, and my tour started in England. 😃

I was a small kid at the end of 1980s in Russia and synth pop mostly meant music from Eastern Germany, Italy and Sweden. British bands were something very chic and classy and more difficult to get a recording of. I still feel this mood of that time. It is a mezmerising combination of both joy, clubbing , dancing and some shade of melancholy.
