I have read " Meditations" a few times now and I absolutely think it should be compulsory read for every human being on this planet. Never something written so many years ago felt so current and valuable to me. Thanks x
DAY 57 of 100 - check! Lots of yumminess here today. My personal fav - the equanimity game. But what’s got me really geeked-out is the fact that these ideas were written nearly 2000 years ago. What the hell? Seriously, when will we ever learn? I mean, here we are in the 21 century still trying to figure out how to live a life well - seems to me that we should have had it mastered by now. Oh-well. Better late than never. Thanks to Brian I'm only on the late train rather than the never train :)
Hi Brian, first of all thanks for opening up Optimize for everyone! I was wondering if you have written or spoken online more about your journey to Europe in 2001, it sounded like a fascinating pilgrimage!

One thing I noticed about Meditations is that it's a bit repetitive. I found this to actually be a good thing for two reasons: 1. It helps to really drive home the important themes of Stoicism. 2. As mentioned in this video, Meditations is a sort of personal journal for Marcus Aurelius. The fact that he had to repeat some of the ideas multiple times speaks to that fact even he, one of the great Stoic thinkers, had trouble adhering to Stoicism at times. It showed me that living a Stoic life is not something that will be easy; it will require time, dedication, and patience. I can't allow myself to become frustrated at my own failings, and instead remain persistent. It's like a diet: it's not going to work if you give up the first time you slip up.
Hey Brian, great video (from 2010.. time flies) and breakdown of the book. I just finished Meditations and it is tough to read in some spots but the parts I could comprehend were very insightful. He focused a lot on how quickly life passes us by and how no one will remember you in the years and centuries to come, so who cares what someone thinks of you! Ha, i like that. It's interesting that we do still remember him though. Anyways, I've been a member on your website for a year or so and I'm loving it. So much great content!!! How do you find the time sir?! I need to start waking up earlier like you :) Thanks for all the knowledge.
Huge smile and equally big thanks, Russ!! Really appreciate your kind words and support! Let's do this, brother! :) Optimize is now free! Sign up/tell your friends! www.optimize.me
Hahaha that one about the emperor writing down about not to think what other people say for him was funny part, you could just easily be a philosopher and a comedian at the same time!! :D comedy 101? haha
Great book. You don't mention the translator in any of the books you discuss that are translations (you really should, translations can vary wildly), but anyone who hasn't should really do themselves a favor and read the Gregory Hayes translation. Its probably the best/most readable one out there. There's also a book called "the Emperor's Handbook" which looks to be a good translation, but I haven't read it cover to cover yet.
just wondering how in practice one can actually not be affected by other's opinions? Especially when their opinions may have influence over your socioeconomic position in life. Ex. a supervisor's opinion about your skills?
Hi Brian, God bless u bro .. nice work. My personal request , although you may deny :) ... please do the book by Mortim adler the on reading the book ... or may be share ur experience for me because i do understand book but not really effective as you.
thankyou i am compiling an interest in philosophy and so that i may share with friends and family whom might be willing to learn. here from Australia Many thanks
Notice he says he "opinions" . Opinions are emotional thoughts about something or emotional attachments making a person think they are true. If a person says they likes you and you're doing out emotional attachment and reasoning their "opinion". Why should you care what they are thinking their point is of no use because marcus aurelius says not to worry about fame and it should help lead to happiness. So people's opinions of liking or disliking him getting popular or not. As a stoic fame is of no importance. So when you are getting popular and are a stoic and weather the popularity is of good reputation or bad reputation it doesn't matter because you're not trying to be famous just trying to do right to be happy because as humans if we are true we will do right when we do right we can't help but be happy. Opinions don't matter and if they do you need to stop caring about what other people think and just keep doing what makes you happy truly. The right thing.
If you do not think about the oponion of others about you, aren't you the same as a dictator? If u have huge powerl, that can destroy nations, does it mean that it is the same mindset, but with a dark side?

Dear Sir, it is very nice to talk about Marcus Aurelius, but in today world the appearences make the reality. To appear in a public video and talk about philosophy, dressed in a sport jacket is ..unwise, and you cant be took in serious. Don't you find a shirt in your garderoba when you want to appear on internet? The most simple and unexpensive shirt, but not a sport suit, you look like you just came from you running session, I cannot even focus on what you say..
I am aware about this, but still, since we live in this society and not in caves, what I said make perfect sense. A philosopher in running dress is not appropriate/credible and reveal a lack of respect for the audience in some cultures (dont forget that youtube is globally available). Why dont you go to your job in pink swimming suit and explain the halo-effect theory to your boss?
Fyx3stars That was funny. Popescu: I appreciate the feedback and I can see how you'd be put off by my somewhat casual attire. You'll be pleased to know I stepped it up to a nice shirt in the new ones. :) th-cam.com/video/ThIgZALR1HY/w-d-xo.html

Aurelius rocks! I think Seneca was his mentor :)
Costas Plassaras Virtual mentor perhaps but Seneca was born ~125 years before Aurelius!
Hahahahah didn't know that "detail"!! :D Imagine if they hadInternet, how different some things would evolve back then!

which version of the book should i get ?
Edgardo A. Rodriguez Berrios I like the one I covered (Penguin Classics): www.amazon.com/Meditations-Penguin-Classics-Marcus-Aurelius/dp/0140449337
whats the difference between the versions?
Brian, I've completed the 50-Day Challenge.
When are you going to do the other 50 Notes?

***** Right. It's like when a brilliant mind speaks but because he/she has dyed the hair pink people can't put their focus on the most relevant place.
