Scotty my brother put straight coolant into his car. I told him it's suposed to be diluted 50/50 with water, it's time to top off and we're wondering what we should do. Wait till it's lower? Re: Mechanic
Back in the day, when _Rolls-Royce_ quality was unsurpassed, Henry Royce was often asked for his autograph.
He obliged, but he didn't sign it _Henry Royce, OBE_ (Order of the British Empire) or _Henry Royce, PEng_ (Doctor of Engineering). He signed, _Henry Royce, mechanic._
That was because to him being a mechanic meant he'd achieved something more significant than royal honours or a degree of higher learning.

You can daily drive a 30 year old vehicle, but it's going to need a lot of new parts if it hasn't had them put in recently. And Scotty is 100% right about any rubber parts, but I'll elaborate further...
Door seals, window seals, steering column bushing, motor mounts, rubber boots on the CV axle & suspension components, trunk seal, etc, etc, etc. Anything rubber will rot over the years no matter how well a vehicle has been maintained. Gotta keep that in mind.

I have an early 90s Accord which I drive often. But I have repaired it for years, do all the maintenance. I do have a backup car in case I have to replace something like a fuel pump, etc. I also use Haynes, Chilton, and Honda repair manuals. I am glad I can fix a lot of things (and still learning), otherwise the repair costs would be huge!
So you can daily drive a 30 year old car, as long as you maintain it and inspect it regularly for needed repairs. Most people probably won't do this, so for them daily driving it could be costly and very troublesome if maintenance (regular) is not done.

Scotty has a point... last year I bought a ‘92 Accord for a spare/fun car but it does get used as a daily driver. This one had 164k miles when I got it and it’s a manual transmission, those are two things that sold me on the car plus I’d heard good things about the early 90s Accords. But Scotty is right, many of the rubber bushings and boots underneath were rotten/torn, and although I’m mechanically inclined and replaced the stuff myself it still has cost hundreds of dollars to buy the parts. I knew this car would need some TLC when I got it - I got it as a mechanic hobby car too. But would it have been worth it to pay someone else to perform these repairs? Heck no! It’s been a fun car but listen to Scotty and just know what you’re getting into :)

My father had a '49 Chrysler Windsor, fluid drive, flathead straight 6. When I was a wee lad we made many trips to the mountains in that car. Mom drove a '48 Plymouth Club Coupe with 3-on-the-tree. Those cars were heavily built and very reliable... but according to Dad, repairs were expensive. Unfortunately he sold them off in 1966, a couple years before I got my license; I ended up with the hand-me-down '60 Ford Falcon. It is a shame what Chrysler has become.

Larry Be, I only drive 7 miles in any one direction... I don’t get thirsty that quickly. All I drink is water anyways. That 87 Accord only has 135k miles on it. Btw... the last time I had anyone work on it. It was the Honda Dealership. They put the wrong oil filter on it and when I told them. They claimed all Honda’s these days take the same filter. I told them, not the old Honda’s. I now do all the work myself. Too many nitwits, crooks and douchebags claiming to be mechanics. Probably true about every profession.

When your buying anything older than 25 years, it could be a challenge to daily drive it even if it's a reliable model. Learned that from buying a 94 Town Car which are known to be great runners but the age really factors in a lot too. I recommend getting any car that old as cheap as possible and have a good amount of money for any repairs to get it roadworthy again. I love my Lincoln at the end of the day even though it has been a pricey 2 years of ownership lol

1981 Mercedes 300D. All the important stuff works. Unknown mileage. Unknown maintenance history. Daily driver 60 miles a day for 2 years so far. Paid $650 for it. $40 a month for insurance. $30 a year for the antique tag. 500 miles a tank of off road diesel 😏. I still get compliments on the car. No one has a better deal than this.

A 1981 car is not an antique. 50 years old is the standard for antique designation. 25 for classic. Of course age doesn't really make a car a CLASSIC. Desirability does. Like 60s Mustang's and Camaros, CORVETTES, some cadillacs, etc. No one would ever call a 30, 40 year old pinto or Pontiac Sunbird a classic!!

Lately I've noticed as cars have gotten bigger and heavier, older sedans bumper heights & crash zones appear to be much lower than newer cars. If one were to t-bone you, the crash might be deadly. Bigger, taller, heavier car wins every time!

Old as in daily driver or old as in classic? For daily depends on your life situation. Can you afford another used car or fix ur problem. Is it problem after problem? If yes then get a different car. For classic depends how much you love and want to keep it or sell it for profit.

A few things to consider: 1) How much are you putting into the car annually vs the cost to buy another? How would the monthly cost of the cheapest new(er) car that would make you as or more happy than your current one compare to what you're paying monthly now? 2) If you're putting way more $$ into the car than it's worth, how much will the insurance pay out if you crash it? Consider if you put $5000 into an old car car because you love it but doing so only realistically increased its value from $1000 to $2000, what if someone crashes into you and your insurance only gives you $2000. 3) If you drive it on freeways or the highway is it so old that you're really risking your life in an accident? 4) Are you replacing parts that take 7, 10, more years to wear out greatly extending the life of your car, or are you constantly replacing the same parts because of flawed designs?

It's been my daily driver since then. 8 years and 77,000 miles later I still drive it daily. Ive done about a half dozen road trips in it too (L.A. to Las Vegas and back). 364,000 miles and going strong. I turn my own wrenches, that's the secret. Timing belt water pump was the "biggest job" so far. Parts are cheap and easy to find. Still passes CA emissions every 2 years. I'm keeping it until one of us dies.
