@@TheWolffAndTheMelody Tuomas Holopainen indeed wrote this just after his father died, he said this: "The last song on the album, Lanternlight, might fool you into thinking it's a sad song, but it's actually a love song and ends up on a very positive vibe. If you have somebody who has lived a very happy and a really long life, it's a moment of celebration and not of grief. This is the message we want to send."
Thank you for your pure reaction. Floor herself said in an interview that she has trouble not to burst out in tears when singing this song. Lost my Mom last year and I cry every time hearing this masterpiece. But it’s not only sad, it’s also uplifting me. Hugs from Germany 🫶🤘🔥
Tuomas said in a short video clip "The last song on the album, Lanternlight, might fool you into thinking it's a sad song, but it's actually a love song with a very positive vibe" and allegedly it's written in honor of his father who passed away and he wanted to send the message "if you have somebody who has lived a happy and really long life, it's a moment for celebration, not of grief" This track didn't do much for me on the first listen or two of the album but it's grown on me since. Also, in case you don't know yet, Yesterwynde as the album title is a word that Troy in the band made up that describes " the feelings of time, history, memory, and the connection to past generations". So to use the word in the last line, which to me sounds like it's written from the perspective of his father possibly, is like saying "I'm leaving now but you will always feel the connection to me and my generation".
I see it as almost the opposite of bittersweet - it's a sad song that feels somehow happy, rather than the other way round. Gets me every time, though - I tend to think of my father who I lost in 1982, and our dog who we lost a month ago. Tommy, big hugs across the ether.
The reason it touches you so is that Tuomas poured his heart, his love, into this song, and Floor felt all of it and conveys all of it. Tuomas lets us hear "the secret stream" that unites all spirit. Our lost loves go "to the meadows", but will be waiting for us, in the life of memory, in the communing belonging to one another - of all spirit. Love at this level - will not be denied. That is what you heard. Stay open; it was a touching, genuine reaction.
This was a beautiful and honest reaction ❤ I feel the same every time I hear this song, it is hypnotic , sad but hopeful, a little bit misterious and magical all in one , this song is a treasure
So many emotions came to the surface . I've been going through my Mother's old photos and this song hit me hard, gently and beautifully. I couldn't help crying both sad and happy tears. Hugs to you, my friend
Hi Tommy. I love this album and listen to one or more of the versions daily Tuomas is a masterpiece of emotion and storytelling and Floor is a masterpiece of it's delivery. Who can help tears when listening to Floor sing a song like this? Every time listen to this album I think there is a new favourite but I find myself waiting for Lanternlight every time. Tuomas started writing the album in January 2021 and a few weeks later on Feb 6th his father died. This is a lovely song for those we have lost, our forefathers, who remain with us recycled into the moss, the stream, the wind: the world around us. It is in keeping with the whole theme of the album. Floor was so moved by this that she found it hard to rehearse without crying and at one point you can see a tear in her eye in the video The watch in the video signifies this time theme and the piano (not bench) in the snow is a clear reference to the musician himself. But the lyrics to Lanternlight are scattered with references to past songs - again that link with the past that continues to today. Tuomas has always done this but in this album and particularly this song, is is more present than any other I can think of. I have been coming to the conclusion that this may become my favourite of the ten albums so far though it has strong competition. A strong connection between the songs, starting and ending the album with the old school projector as we start and finish our journey through this world Tuomas has created, helps to make it a coherent album not just a set of songs out together, as so many bands do - you may guess I like concept albums; they remind me in structure of the longer classical works I love so much like Mahler symphonies. Thank you Tuomas for creating these masterpieces; thank you Floor for interpreting them so well and thank you Tommy for sharing your thoughts.
Thank God for Nightwish,if you can feel so deep for this song means it's good song, today's songs are just feel less and I'm so happy for Nightwish existence
It took me a few listens to happen but after a month of listening to 'Yesterwynde' I honestly think its a masterpiece! Just phenomenal! This song is beautiful!
So warm and gentle, sorrow and hope, a relatives urging for you to go on. I cry every time, makes me remember those who has passed on. And sorrow, loss and regret are all valid emotions and should never be apologised for. The angelchoir might be in heaven, but on earth we have Floor.
Leave it up to Tuomas, to write a song that will, at the same time make you sad and happy. I have listened to the whole album multiple times. It had to grow on me, but I do love every song. The orchestral parts are fenomenal. Lanternlight is one of the songs that always makes me cry. I know it sounds morbid, I am after all an old lady. So I have put this on the list I am creating to be played at my funeral. And here is something else, every time I listen to one of your reactions, you are able to make them feel like you are hugging me. So hugs are a part of every reaction. Blessed Be.
Lanternlight is breathtakingly gorgeous ❣️ Not able to listen to this with dry eyes, it goes straight to your soul. It’s so fragile and strong at the same time. What a gorgeous piece of music composed by Tuomas and so emotionally sung by Floor. Tuomas said that Lanternlight is a song of love to celebrate live of the people that passed. In this case mainly his dad. My favorite song from the new album followed by An Ocean of Strange Islands.
Tommy, you have a sensitive soul. I can tell by the way you interact with your listeners that you feel things deeply. I will always be deeply grateful for the message you sent me when you talked about needing people to help you through dark times. When I talked about my loss you sent some comforting words. Keep on being you. We need people with empathy and understanding.
In my opinion, the most important album in 2024. It's difficult to point out if there is one song more important than the others - but this one could be it. This is so important art, made alive - it goes right in. It's actually a happy thoughtful song, and it hits so hard. By the way - everybody in The Nightwish Army cries and show emotions. Floor had to do this several times also because it hits so hard
Es una Obra Maestra, que debe ser escuchado junto a los dos anteriores como una ÚNICA pieza musical. Y esta belleza es el broche perfecto a tanta genialidad
First of all, I like the album and think it's very good as a whole. In fact, I usually listen to it from start to finish because that makes some of the decisions (sound, etc.) make perfect sense to me, even if I might have preferred them differently. But Laternlight... let me put it this way, this song hit me like a brick. When the video came out, it hit me like a wrecking ball. How I understand the song: It's the farewell of a person at the end of their life. But even if this farewell seems sad, it is full of hope and joy. The person leaving says to those left behind, don't mourn for me, but be happy, because I had a fulfilling life and in some form I will always be with you as I continue my journey. The video also gives me this impression... especially the snapping film reel at the end... I have to say, I am battling a potentially fatal illness (although the battle is far from lost) and so far I had two NW songs on my list for my possible funeral (Dead Boys Poem & Our Decades in the Sun), but when I heard Laternlight for the first time, I just thought to myself through tears... THAT'S THE SONG
This is another Tuomas Holopainen masterpiece. He only keeps on getting better as his talent and vision matures. Absolutely stunning. This composition is as deep as the Marianas Trench and has more layers than a baklava. It is exquisite. I'm 73 and I am the last man standing in my family. I am the last of the Dorrity line. So this performance runs deep, cuts deep. I understand the feeling of loss, yet I still live with hope and intent. No small thing to live with intent. Floor's voice and this composition is akin to an emotional depth charge to the heart. There is a tenderness and vulnerability there that I have not heard before, and it just breaks you. And her face, good Lord, her beautiful face so expressive and adorned with nothing save her heart and soul just melts me to my core. Look at her gestures, her hands. So tender, so expressive. Her hands are speaking to you as well in a language unto its own. I am not ashamed to say that this staggeringly beautiful composition and the meaning behind it makes me want to cry on Floor’s shoulder. I’m sure she would understand. The poetry of this song is also heart-rendingly exquisite. It is a poem, a prayer, an elegy. Listen to it. Just listen to it. Tuomas’ poetry can easily stand alone. Some of you get it. Some of you don't. I do, and that's all that matters. Kiitos to all of you in Nightwish for delivering such epic and emotional story telling.
see this reactions already 3 time by difference reactor since this morning , tear pass through every time this is incredibly crazy when the song sang by Floor the one who no one can compared anymore
I've heard this song/video probably dozens of times now, and I still can't get through it without tearing up. It's crazy how Tuomas' music and/or Floor's singing hits me so frickin hard so many times. I do love this band! ❤️☺️✌️🤘
My personal song of the year 2024. Top 3 in my NW rating. Whatever guard you have up, when Floor's voice comes in she cut's thru it like a fresh sharpened butcher knife and get's you right into your soul and while your bleeding out you feel satisfied. When Floor goes into her emotional mode you can sleep in the finnish winter outside in the woods and still be warmed by her voice and feel comfortable. Much Love from Germany to you and your passionate reactions!
Tommy...your silence at the end of the song said it all...NEVER EVER think that being emotional is cringe worthy! You are too self critical and overthink too much..Being your authentic self and allowing us to witness your ' vulnerability ' is a strength and l am honoured that you feel..to some degree that you can be open in that way.. Lanternlight hits the soul I love the 3 times Tuomas mentions the boat.. We are all craft in this life..we are created..we travel..we weather storms..we experience calm..we carry battle damage..and finally our time comes to be relinquished. I always have the image of Viking funeral when l hear this. I lost my mother 2 yrs ago..and the sadness is there always..but you learn to carry on..the memories if they are in your heart will keep those we lost alive until we are reunited..We are so much MORE than this physicality..we are The perfume of the timeless of those who came before us and those who come after us.. Always be yourself Tommy...never dim your light...Take care ok? And thankyou !!!❤
As an Album it really hangs together well as an entity and rewards listening to from start to finish as great albums should. There are less songs that I think that I would put in a mixed playlist but it will be something I will sit down and absorb in its entirety on a regular basis setting aside time as I do for the great prog albums of the 70s. Tuomas really deserves to get a major movie soundtrack and there are producers in Hollywood missing out on a massive opportunity to enhance their films.
Cant say what hasnt been said about this song already. But you sir..your reactions and the way you take time to read comments and answer to many of them. You are genuine feeling respecting gem amongst reactors. Not too many do that ❤❤ Keep up the good work 👍
I recently lost my Mom to cancer. This song was released a couple of weeks before she died. It helped me. We know that Tuomas wrote this after his father passed and it was the first song to be written for this album. My interpretation is that the song is a celebration of a life well lived, and the profound effect that it will have on those that remain and will follow. Top that off with his usual masterful composition, Floor's next-level vocals in so many styles and ranges, Troy's gentle and soothing voice sprinkled in, and the result is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. Being the last song, it ties a nice bow on not only this album, but the trilogy as well. Just perfect.
This album is something special, and this song in particular is probably the most entrancing song I have ever heard. It speaks something to everybody who hears it, and we all have something somewhere inside of us that this music just reaches and caresses. Lyrically, it’s one of the most beautiful poems I’ve ever heard as well. Everything about it is fantastic.
My father died suddenly this year on the 18th of october. I have not listened to this song since then, I dont think I will be able to for a while, so I had to cut this one short. But great that you did a listen to this for later. Death often sucks.
Just like to say, you are definately not a fool my friend !! When a song or performance touches your inner soul, then that is what is intended by the composer & musicians, we all get emotional, but it certainly takes the best to do it.....
Beautiful. Starting deep and low... [This sounds like her solo album, I think Tuomas likes the variety of her singing. Floor said that she chokes up too easily with this song, the band rewinds, during the sessions, to let her recover.] Mmm, the warmth of her voice. “Last night brought the heaviest of snows” That sad piano about to sink below the ice. “Melting the songs of old” Reminiscences, love of the souls that have gone before. Tuomas wrote this in memory of his father. The pocket watch to wind... The old style film projector, a “Magic Lantern”. The old flickering movies, like memories. Floor soaring away. Celebration of their lives, rather than mourning. Did you get the Tuomas déjà vu references? “I am the snow on your palm” [Storytime?] The way she uses her hands... “I am the secret stream” [Sagan, Shudder Before The Beautiful, Endlessness?] “Moss beneath your feet” [My Walden?] “I am you who climbed off of my back” [Our Decades in the Sun?] “Petrichor” (with a hint of green) [The smell of fresh rain on grass, Last Ride Of The Day, Song of Myself?] “Timeless” (with a hint of a smile) [Perfume of the Timeless?] “To the meadows I go” [Meadows of Heaven?] Then Troy drifts in, with his soft voice, he made up the word, so his pronunciation, is our guide, _right at the end_ of the album. :) Pope Leo Xlll, who served until his death in 1903 at the age of 93. The restored and colorized old movies inspired Tuomas.
Never feel foolish when emotionally moved by music. Feel privileged. Music is heard as a form of entertainment by most. It is so much more for those with ears to hear. "Without music, life would be a mistake". Music is perceived directly and is thus capable of portraying truth without going through the whole 'veil of perception' confusion. "Shadows of shadows passing. It is now 1831, and as always I am absorbed with a delicate thought. It is how poetry has indefinite sensations, to which end music is inessential. Since the comprehension of sweet sound is our most indefinite conception, music, when combined with a pleasurable idea, is poetry. Music without the idea is simply music. Without music or an intriguing idea, colour becomes pallor, man becomes carcase, home becomes catacomb, and the dead are but for a moment motionless." Edgar Allan Poe I first heard this as narrated by Orson Welles in the song The Fall Of The House Of Usher - I Prelude, by Allan Parson's Project.
The album is a masterpiece no other way to put it, thematically, lyrically, musically extraordinary. This particular song was written by Tuomas for his Father following his passing in 2021. Its a tribute to and a celebration of lives well lived, of those who lit the way ahead for us. I think this might just be the most beautiful song I've ever heard. I kniw exactly what you mean when you say you had to hold your breath - its utterly captivating and compelling . Wonderful reaction dude, this 58 year old headbanger sends you a hug 🤘
“People cry not because they are weak or vulnerable. They cry because they have been strong for so long.”… JD. I am the same. Music 🎶has that effect on me and I would not want any other way. This song is special, feel what you need.
The whole album...in my case, a CD....is one of the best Albums I have listened to in many years! Nightwish, with Tuomas writing the lyrics and composing the music is out of this world!
You are never alone with the Nightwish family, please remember that. Your reaction was wonderful. I had tears in my eyes I don't mind admitting and I'm 69! Tuomas is a mastermind.... I mean, what can be said that hasn't already been said?..... and Floor? Well again, what can be said. Anyway, keep up the good work.
The new album is so good. Most reactions to it i have heard are positive with some random negative comments here and there but mostly positive. The boys and Floor did the dam thing, in my opinion, like they always do. This song is beautiful, and to hear them, these news tracks is just strait up ear porn.
I really don’t think anyone writes songs like Tuomas. I love that this is a celebration of a life well-lived and the profound effect that that life - those lives - have on us as we look forward and back, and live in the moment, simultaneously. This is the emotional wrench, attached to both sincerity and cleverness (that suffuses this whole album). This is one of the best songs Tuomas has ever written and my favourite on what is, as a whole, an excellent album.
This hits straight to your soul! 🥹 Look on your eyes says it all. All'n'all, it's a great album, brobably the best for me this year. But, it's also a little old fashioned product, best listen in a row to feel all the atmospheres there. No easy listening radio hits there. There are some artistic choises about mixing, that l maybe don't agree, but they fade away in repeated listening. And by the way, the white dressed big nose clergyman at the end is pope Leo XIII, the first filmed pope, and the firstly born filmed human.
Why ? ....previous lifes aa also this life ...❤💜💙 we arecas humanity at the End of a dark cicle ... New Golden Age is here ... so ...its time for inner silence and healing ......We the people ...are in a healings Mode ❤
I've been thinking lately again about what to do with my mom's ashes. I didn't buy an urn. Her ashes have been in the plastic box from the crematorium for years. I get bags that have "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Valentine's Day" artwork and put the box inside them on the mantle. It's been like getting her a new outfit every once in a while. I think she would have liked that. She was weird. But, I'm old now and need to think of my own death. Some cousin shouldn't have to deal with her remains too. I don't want to scatter her ashes here, although my families' ashes are here already. At the time they were sprinkled here, this place seemed forever. But almost all the old houses on my road are gone now. Mine will be next. I don't want my mom's ashes to be in cornflakes. So, I'm leaning toward scattering them on the river. She loved eagles and New Orleans. That water may deliver a few particles of her into both. ••• PEACES!!!
This is so lovely song. ❤ You can feel it whit yous soul. I wonder would you like to hear a celtic singer who i like? Maybe you check her songs. 🥰 She is Alina Gingertail.
Big hug is on it's way to you! Music is emotion packed into lyrics ans notes! So why shouldn't you show yours? Lanternlight ist a very sad song, but at the same time uplifting and hopeful. I love It! And each time i hear it, i'm tearing up 😅
Hi Tommy, hope you're keeping well. I'm sorry I don't share your sentiment for this song. I don't really want to say what I think of it, best just to leave it at that I think.
So beautiful. 🤍 Google a CTV News article & watch the video that defines “Petrichor” - that one word links every song, concept, video imagery & Easter Eggs throughout this Yesterwynde album. This single is the last one on the album & also the Triology of albums with these themes.
The best Nightwish song in years. Floor had tears when she first heard this also. Tuomas wrote it after his father passed in 2021.
Now knowing that it was written for his father, makes so much sense.

But we’re in the army of salvation and Floor is leading.
we embrace you. don't worry, every time i'm crying my eyeballs red and wet...
Love the album, best in years . A mixture of nightwish over their years
see this reactions already 3 time by difference reactor since this morning , tear pass through every time this is incredibly crazy when the song sang by Floor the one who no one can compared anymore
I've heard this song/video probably dozens of times now, and I still can't get through it without tearing up. It's crazy how Tuomas' music and/or Floor's singing hits me so frickin hard so many times. I do love this band! ❤️☺️✌️🤘
This one left me "wounded" (overwhelmed) each time and in the same time completely enchanted by the harmonies between Floor and Troy.
Music is emotion. Tuomas is a master at writing it. Floor is a master at projecting it.
Well, if this song doesn’t do anything for you, you’re a stone. It’s just awesome!
❤
This album begins with the old film projector sound & ends the same. It's a great album.
oh thats an amazing touch
The restored and colorized old movies inspired Tuomas.
Along with the day of.. this is the best song on the album.
👍Excellent, a very lovely MV and performance.😊 🖖❤
My Favorite from this album so far
when the brass section kicks in gets me everytime
Love new album
Tuomas is a genius! The birds take singing lessons from Floor!🤘🎸
Beautifully said, Glenn! Greetings from the Netherlands. 🤘🙏🤘
Lanternlight hits the soul
I love the 3 times Tuomas mentions the boat..
You have a way with words.I feel them! Thank you for being you, and for sharing your heart with us.
Not too many do that ❤❤
Keep up the good work 👍
Thanks ❤❤❤
Loved this reaction man. Such an awesome deep song.
Thank you for being here friend!
Love the Album tbh
Death often sucks.
oh dude, much love to you friend. Sending you light and good energy brother.
❤❤❤
The island on the video is a dear place for Tuomas and his father. Floor captures the emotion here so fine. I suppose it touches You too.
Just like to say, you are definately not a fool my friend !! When a song or performance touches your inner soul, then that is what is intended
by the composer & musicians, we all get emotional, but it certainly takes the best to do it.....
Beautiful.
Starting deep and low...
[This sounds like her solo album,
I think Tuomas likes the variety of her singing.
Floor said that she chokes up too easily with this song,
the band rewinds, during the sessions, to let her recover.]
Mmm, the warmth of her voice.
“Last night brought the heaviest of snows”
That sad piano about to sink below the ice.
“Melting the songs of old”
Reminiscences, love of the souls that have gone before.
“I am the snow on your palm” [Storytime?]
The way she uses her hands...
“I am the secret stream” [Sagan, Shudder Before The Beautiful, Endlessness?]
“Moss beneath your feet” [My Walden?]
“I am you who climbed off of my back” [Our Decades in the Sun?]
“Petrichor” (with a hint of green) [The smell of fresh rain on grass, Last Ride Of The Day, Song of Myself?]
“Timeless” (with a hint of a smile) [Perfume of the Timeless?]
“To the meadows I go” [Meadows of Heaven?]
Then Troy drifts in, with his soft voice, he made up the word,
so his pronunciation, is our guide, _right at the end_ of the album. :)
Pope Leo Xlll, who served until his death in 1903 at the age of 93.
Without music or an intriguing idea, colour becomes pallor, man becomes carcase, home becomes catacomb, and the dead are but for a moment motionless." Edgar Allan Poe
I first heard this as narrated by Orson Welles in the song The Fall Of The House Of Usher - I Prelude, by Allan Parson's Project.
Well said my friend!
Appreciate you friend. This song had so much heart to it.
thanks ❤
“People cry not because they are weak or vulnerable. They cry because they have been strong for so long.”… JD. I am the same. Music 🎶has that effect on me and I would not want any other way. This song is special, feel what you need.
Appreciate the words friend.
Okay, I'm not sure how I feel about the rest of the album, but this one is beautiful. The video, the song... they were both stunning.
This is one of the best songs Tuomas has ever written and my favourite on what is, as a whole, an excellent album.
as I go on this journey, I agree. He writes such powerful music.
Wolfje I’m here too 🫡
It’s been awhile
This hits straight to your soul! 🥹
Look on your eyes says it all.
Here's a viral hug to You 🫂
Thanks friend!
Why ? ....previous lifes aa also this life ...❤💜💙 we arecas humanity at the End of a dark cicle ...
You can feel it whit yous soul.
I wonder would you like to hear a celtic singer who i like?
Maybe you check her songs. 🥰
She is Alina Gingertail.
do you have a song I could check out?
@TheWolffAndTheMelody Here is couple good ones example: The dragonborn comes-Skyrim. And My Mother told me. ❤️
I lasted until Floor and Troy at the end, then broke up.
You have just been Floored... and Tuomas'd.
This song is a masterpiece. It hits the heart in a good way once you get past the initial sorrow. The rest of the album is OK.
These lyrics alone are just on another level!
No fool, no cringe. *Hugs*
Hey appreciate you friend!
Tommy - the day music stops playing havoc with your emotions is the day to stop listening to music. Nightwish are just better at this than most....
Compouser Tuomas Holopainen metal Mozart
Big hug is on it's way to you!
Music is emotion packed into lyrics ans notes!
So why shouldn't you show yours?
Lanternlight ist a very sad song, but at the same time uplifting and hopeful.
I love It! And each time i hear it, i'm tearing up 😅
Yea, I had no idea what to expect.
🫂
Hi Tommy, hope you're keeping well. I'm sorry I don't share your sentiment for this song. I don't really want to say what I think of it, best just to leave it at that I think.
🩷 💪
This is a lot to take-in. Feels like being stretched in several directions ... very gently. ••• PEACES!!!
Not Kamala lol. Floor has a thing to tell.
In general for me the new album is overall the weakest effort by them ever.
👍
So beautiful. 🤍
