    SHOW NOTES
Hello all you atheists (and theists) out there! The hosts of today’s Atheist Experience are Matt Dillahunty and Jim Barrows! Glad to see Jim back! As an update, our show will remain remote throughout the year and into next year.
Let’s get to calls! The first caller, Rick in CA, has a quick question on the efficacy of prayer. Who knows how many times our hosts prayed and nothing happens. The hosts don’t see any evidence that prayer works.
Aaron in WI calls to talk about morality as it pertains to atheists vs theists for an argument for god. Neither theism nor atheism takes a position on morality. Aaron feels we would agree with most of the morality in the bible, but Aaron has more in common morally with the hosts than what's in the bible.
Carl in Ontario calls to tell a story about saving a kid from a car wreck. While reflecting back he has a purpose to protect people and needs no gods. One would hope any decent person would do the same in that situation, with or without a god belief.
Mark in FL asks what is the standard of proof before one begins to believe something. There are multiple standards of evidence. Believing means you accept something likely true. Why would you be convinced of something without evidence??
Gene in PA, a science teacher, would feel bad if a student left the class believing that the earth is flat but recognizes a right to one's beliefs. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink. You can only do your best to educate people, teach them how to think and not what to think.
Joe in Lebanon is on the road to atheism and points out that most religions are started by eccentric men and asks if St. Paul was honest. We don’t, and maybe can’t, know.
Adrian in TX is calling to argue for a designer god but confuses purpose and design. One can use a rock as a hammer but the rock is not designed. When you can't differentiate between purpose and designed, there isn't much of a conversation to be had.
David in Mexico calls to challenge something Jim said at the start of the show, the hypothesis of god can be scientific if you look at it as a non incomprehensible object. Throw in some metaphysics and quantum mechanics and you have some word salad. This is speculative at best.
Last up is Jim and NV, calling in about the possibility of a god and that god would want people to be rational. And suggests Matt is god. We aren’t convinced that there is a god and feelings aren’t a pathway to truth.
Thanks for tuning in, we are so glad you joined us today. Stay safe and please continue to wear your masks. The world is better with you in it. See you next week!

Perhaps one of them thinks he saw a UFO up close. No inconsistency in that. That claimed observation is not going to convince me though, just like a theist revelation is not convincing to me.

To utter a prayer, to count beads, to abstain from food, to sacrifice a lamb or a child or an enemy, are all simply ways of accomplishing the same superstitious objective, and all are offspring of precisely the same error. For my part, I care nothing for what the religious say except that which accords with reason."

@@TheAsaoirc The angel interpretation isn't in the original text. That's apologetics getting into some english translations. The Hebrew word is Elohim (gods). Usually (somewhat justifiably) translated as God in the OT, but in some cases it should be translated as gods, IMO. El was the head of the Elohim and Baal was one of the sons of El and a member of the Elohim, for example.
"...for you have struggled with *Elohim* and men and have prevailed."
The fact that the Elohim included children of El is how translators/apologetics justified calling it an angel to avoid embarrassment/contradiction. Since they equate El with Yahweh (i.e. the one true god) and angels are called sons of the gods (again, it's actually sons of Elohim, so not part of the Elohim), they draw the tenous connection and claim it 'must' have been an angel.

So true. I see this ALL the time. But the thing is, if I were a deity with superpowers and I knew that someone I loved was going to be shot at, I wouldn’t even allow the gunman to get there. Being shot at is psychologically damaging, but all part of God’s shitty plan. It goes to show the indoctrination of religion: it doesn’t take a genius to realise that a 5 year old would be a better god than Yahweh or any other nonsense deity proposed by any other religion but religious people never want to think about that because it doesn’t make them feel good. To quote Gregory House: “reasonable arguments don’t work with religious people, otherwise there would be no religious people.”

Here’s my issue with prayer - Supposedly God is perfect, and he created the Bible, which is his perfect book. In the Bible, Jesus is said to make very specific statements about the power of prayer. Since Jesus is God, and God and the Bible are said to be perfect, those statements should be true and accurate. God is ready and willing to answer your prayers no matter how big or small. All that you have to do is believe. He says it in multiple places in the Bible. Surely, with millions of people in the prayer circle, at least one of them will believe and the prayer will be answered.
    So..
If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer. [Matthew 21:21]
If you ask anything in my name, I will do it. [John 14:14]
Ask, and it will be given you. [Matthew 7:7]
Nothing will be impossible to you. [Matthew 17:20]
Believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. [Mark 11:24]
The question, therefore, is simple: Are Jesus' statements in the Bible true or false?
Many believers will say, "God always answers prayers, but sometimes his answer is 'no.' If your prayer does not fit with God's will, then God will say 'no' to you." This is odd because God's answer to every amputee is *always* "no" when it comes to regenerating lost limbs (or healing devout Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s patients). Jesus says, "If you ask anything in my name, I will do it." He does not say, "If you ask anything in my name, I will do it, unless you are praying about an amputated limb (or Alzheimer’s/Parkinson’s), in which case I will always reject your prayer." Jesus also says, "Nothing will be impossible to you," and regenerating a limb/healing Alzheimer’s should therefore be possible. The fact that God refuses to answer every prayer to heal those folks seems strange, doesn't it?
A believer might say, "You are taking the Bible literally." But how else are we supposed to take it? Jesus clearly says, "If you ask anything in my name, I will do it." When Jesus says that, what does he mean? Presumably, Jesus means that if you ask for anything, he will do it. What else could he possibly mean?
Believers often say, "Look, Jesus was using poetic embellishment when he said, 'nothing will be impossible for you,' and 'faith can move mountains.'" Which leads to the following question: What prayers does God answer? It is the response to that question that is fascinating. Because the response inevitably is, "God is omnipotent, so God can do anything."
Obviously, he can’t, or won’t, which is a pretty dickish move on His part.

*Romans 10:6-13* - ... if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
*John **3:36* - He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.

If prayer doesn't work, then religion is pointless.
If prayer does work, then it is possible to influence the creator.
But if the creator knows the future, then he has already adjusted his plans accordingly.
So no further intervention is possible. Therefore religion is pointless. Amen.

If somebody says to me that they'll be keeping me in their "Thoughts and prayers"....then primarily, I take it as an intended kindness on their part. Quite often, this is all some people feel they are able to offer in certain situations. I'll rarely "mine" the expression too deeply or too cynically as I think I have a good handle on what they're really trying to communicate. They're basically saying that they'll try and stay "mindful" of my situation and continue to wish me some kind of positive outcome or resolution whenever they DO bring it to mind.
    FOR WHAT THAT'S WORTH....
This is where the sentiment becomes a little more tricky or nebulous. When you actually ponder upon it and try and ascertain what (if anything) such a sentiment is actually worth. What's it really worth to YOU? (the recipient of another person's mindfulness) and what's it really worth to THEM? (the bestower of those kind thoughts)
For some people to express kind thoughts and to wish for a positive outcome, they feel the need to invoke their "personal god" and to create a highly specific dialogue with him. They basically frame their petition as though they were addressing a third party whose unique talent makes them the: "hearer of prayers."
Others however, believe that it's enough to just send their thoughts of concern out "into the universe" as it were. No name, address or pre-paid-postage required on this kind of supplication. The "universe" will easily make sense of whom the prayer's from....and who it's intended to benefit.
So far however....these two kinds of prayer have one thing in common. They are both being projected to some external "hub" (or persona) where outbound prayers are sifted, sorted and adjudicated upon....prior to being relayed back to the intended beneficiary.
Some people do not subscribe to the "external" relay model however. They believe that they themselves are a self-contained spiritual agent (albeit in a human body) and that the focused power of their own personal "well wishing" is sufficient in itself to go straight towards their intended recipient....and that no intermediary or exchange system is required. These people believe that the "intermediary" model is a fallacious relic that belongs to outdated religious understandings wherein priests and go-betweens were needed to help human beings channel their more serious thoughts, emotions and supplications.
Anyway....it's likely that somebody who wishes to keep you in their "thoughts and prayers" will be utilising one of the above models in order to make good on their declaration.
This kind of "prayer" after all....is really just an expression of positive emotion from one human being to another. It's a way to emote rather specifically in connection with another person's circumstance, trials or challenges.
A person who is moved to "pray" for you....is basically saying that they are going to give you some of their own emotional resources to help bolster your own.
Whether or not there is really any kind of "invisible" channel for this to actually occur is perhaps where the cynical materialists of the world will (understandably) cast their doubts.
To all intents and purposes, human beings appear to be emotionally annexed from eachother. Whether or not there exists any emotional Wireless, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth "apps" within the human mind that can exchange and process shared emotions.....is......for the time being......not something we have any meaningful evidence for.
If ever successive generations DO make progress in our understanding of such things, then it will go a long way towards explaining humanity's religious impulses and why so many people seem to instinctively put such great store in these kinds of sentiments and expressions.
It won't necessarily mean that any one set of religious (or new age) impulses will be proven correct, it will merely mean that there at least WAS/IS something for these adherents to "mistake" as being something mysteriously external....when really....it was always just an ill-mapped, poorly understood facet of human connectivity. One that even science was quite right to be sceptical about.....given how much erroneous religious credence was once associated with it.

I remember reading a funny comment on this once, "Prayers are like masturbation. It only makes YOU feel better for a while, not the person, place, or thing you're thinking about". And according to the bible, Jesus only adds further nonsense to it, saying "Ask in my name, believe you have received it and it shall be yours". So according to him, you have to believe you already have whatever you're asking for, which negates the reason you're even asking in the first place. And of course, how does that compare to praying over the ill who end up not getting better, get worst, and/or die from it anyway?

I agree with Matt, the way it is written is absurd if not insane. But then you could pick out verses and put forward the argument that the God of the Bible in not in the business of answering prayers, meaning it is anachronism.
Absurd and insane but there might be something sinister to it. In the age of multiple gods with separate jurisdiction the verse might be an attempt to create a religious monopoly. You would pray to Mars the Avenger for his favour in a battle. You would pray to Thor if you wanted to hear thunder. Cupid, if you fancied someone. You wouldn't bother with a hundred different gods of there was one god who could handle all aspects of life.

It's funny that Christians pray the same things every few days or weeks. Like if there is a drought, they keep praying god sends rain. Seems you would only need to state the prayer once, for only 15 seconds. Yet they will sit there and pray for rain for 10 minutes or 30 minutes straight. And they will even get a church full of people to pray for rain for 10 minutes straight. This seems like over kill. Can god not hear you just state the request as one single sentence question at one single sitting?

“What I say to you in the dark you must repeat in broad daylight; what you hear whispered you must shout from the rooftops.” - (Jesus Immanuel the Messiah, at Matthew 10: 27) -
We must avoid all religions; because they are all led by the many wayward blind guides and false prophets who are misleading us, including the Pope and Christianity. When only Immanuel alone (the anointed one) called Jesus, is the Son of man and the true prophet who was sent by the Lord God, to be always our one Teacher…
“I will raise up for them a prophet like you [Moses] from among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words in his mouth.” - (Deuteronomy 18: 18) -
“Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign: A young woman is with child, and she will bear a son, and will call him Immanuel.” [“God is with us”] - (The Prophet Isaiah 7: 14) -
“He [John the Baptist] saw Jesus coming towards him. ‘Look,’ he said, ‘there is the Lamb of God; it is he who takes away the sin of this world.’” - (at John 1: 29) -
“God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” - (Jesus Immanuel the Messiah, at John 4: 24) -
“In truth I tell you, anyone who gives heed to what I say and puts his trust in him who sent me, has hold of eternal life and does not come up for judgement, but has already passed from death to life.” - (John 5: 24) -
“Beware of false prophets, men who come to you dressed up as sheep while underneath they are savage wolves. You will recognize them by the fruits they bear.” - (at Matthew 7: 15-16) -
“Any plant that is not of my heavenly Father’s planting will be rooted up. Leave them alone; they are blind guides, and if one blind man guides another they will both fall into the ditch.” - (Matthew 15: 13-14) -
“Do not call any man on earth ‘father’; for you have one Father and he is in heaven. Nor must you be called ‘teacher’; you have one Teacher, the Messiah.” - (Matthew 23: 9-10) -
“I am the light of the world. No follower of mine shall wander in the dark; he shall have the light of life.” - (Jesus, at John 8: 12) -
“Take care that no one misleads you: For many will come claiming my name…”
    - (Matthew 24: 4) -
“Many false prophets will arise, and will mislead many; and as lawlessness spreads, men’s love for one another will grow cold. But the man who holds out to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the Kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the earth as a testimony to all nations; and then the end will come.” - (Matthew 24: 11-14) -
“You shall know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” - (John 8: 32) -
“When you pray, go into a room by yourself, and shut the door. Pray to your Father who is there in the secret place; and your Father who sees what is secret will reward you.
In your prayers do not go babbling on like the heathen, who imagine that the more they say the more likely they are to be heard.
Do not imitate them. Your Father knows what your needs are before you ask him.
This is how you should pray:
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
Your kingdom come; your will be done, on earth as in heaven,
Give us today our daily bread,
Forgive us the wrong we have done, as we have forgiven those who have wronged us.
And do not bring us to the test, but save us from the evil one.
For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, for ever.
    Amen.
For if you forgive others the wrongs they have done, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; but if you do not forgive others, then the wrongs you have done will not be forgiven by your Father.” - (Matthew 6: 6-15) -
“Pass no judgement, and you will not be judged. For as you judge others, so you will yourselves be judged, and whatever measure you deal out to others will be dealt back to you.” - (Matthew 7: 1-2) -
“Truly I tell you; if anyone obeys my teaching he shall never know what it is to die.” - (John 8: 51) -
“Always treat others as you would like them to treat you: that is the Law and the Prophets.
Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life and only a few find it.” - (Matthew 7: 12-14) -
“I am the gate; anyone who comes into the fold through me shall be safe. He shall go in and out and shall find pasturage.
The thief comes only to steal, to kill, to destroy; I have come that men may have life, and may have it in all its fullness.” - (John 10: 9-10) -
“I am the resurrection and I am life. If a man has faith in me, even though he dies, he shall come to life; and no one who is alive and has faith shall ever die.” - (John 11: 25-26) -
“I have not come to judge the world, but to save the world” - (John 12: 47) -
“Whoever then will acknowledge me before men, I will acknowledge him before my Father in heaven; and whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven.” - (Matthew 10: 32-34) -
“I am the way; I am the truth and I am life; no one comes to the Father except by me. If you knew me you would know my Father too.” - (John 14: 6-7) -
“The disciples came and asked Jesus, ‘Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven?’ He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: ‘Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of Heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.
If anyone causes one of these little ones-those who believe in me-to stumble, It would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.
Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come!’” - (Matthew 18: 1-7) -
“Though many are called, few are chosen.” - (Matthew 22: 14) -
“An expert in the law, [a leading religious Pharisee] tested him with this question: ‘Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?’ He answered, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind. That is the greatest commandment. It comes first. The second is like it: Love your neighbour as yourself.
Everything in the Law and the Prophets hangs on these two commandments.’” - (Matthew 22: 35-40) -
“There is no greater love than this, that a man should lay down his life for his friends.” - (John 15: 13) -
"Stay awake, and pray that you may be spared the test: The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." - (Matthew 26: 41) -
“However, when he comes who is the Spirit of truth; he will guide you into all the truth.” - (John 16: 13) -
Yours always, in true Spirit and in our one given prayer, 2gointruth, Thursday the 20th of August, 2020: - (Matthew 5:14-16) - Where every minute (of both day and night) can be a new beginning for any one of us. Let it always be you.

We (all men) have a choice between religion, atheism and the true teaching of Jesus. If you choose Jesus, then you will know the truth and life. You will reject religion (and atheism) you will become a new and a better man, because you have learned that all religions (even that of the Pope and Christianity) are all led by the many blind guides and false prophets that are misleading us, and of whom Jesus had warned us to beware of, almost 2,000 years ago…
“God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” - (Jesus the Messiah, at John 4: 24) -
“In truth I tell you, anyone who gives heed to what I say and puts his trust in him who sent me, has hold of eternal life and does not come up for judgement, but has already passed from death to life.” - (John 5: 24) -
“Beware of false prophets, men who come to you dressed up as sheep while underneath they are savage wolves.

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” - (Matthew 7: 21) -

I see no value or use in praying for people or things. One can't pray for others any more than one can think for others. It only makes sense to pray for things if they believe that a god hears & answers prayers, which makes no sense at all.
If a child was dying, and prayer heals the child, that would suggest that god would've let the child die if no one prayed, otherwise prayer is useless because god was going to heal the child anyway.
So if prayer works, that means there are good things that need to be done and we would do ourselves without hesitation and without being asked, but,... ONLY god will do IF we ask. Which insinuates that god is not good natured.
Or maybe god is good natured and hears & acts on prayers, which is what many people actually believe, but we would have to reconcile god's good nature with the idea that prayer causes god to act.
If prayer doesn't cause god to act, then its nothing more than a form of meditation or therapy for those doing the praying. In effect it's like seeing someone in need and tending to yourself, which would make prayer incredibly selfish.
Two things to consider if prayer causes god to act:
    1. If god acts on all our prayers, it would not only be impossible since some prayers conflict, but it would also put us in charge, and it could mean god sometimes acts on immoral prayers. So how does that alter our view of gods good nature?
    2. If god doesn't act on all of our prayers, then how does he choose?
If god chooses randomly, then there is no moral value to gods actions. And again, it suggests god isn't good-natured.
If god uses judgment to choose, deciding which prayers are good and deserve to be acted upon, then why doesn't he apply that judgment directly? Determining which events deserve to be acted upon? Which insinuates that god is not voluntarily good.
Another possibility, is that maybe god doesn't know about these things until we pray. If thats true, then he isn't all-knowing. We wouldn't have to pray if thats the case. We would just have to give god a heads up. Instead of saying" pray for this person" we would say" go tell god about this person" .
Or maybe its some kind of democracy and god only acts if we decide it's worth acting on. We would "vote" by praying. But we often pray for things we don't get, so if it's a democracy, its a really bad one.
Or maybe, we might choose to believe that god is good-natured and listens to our prayers, acting on those that have merit, and that to us, it only seems as if god is being inconsistent. And that what we cannot see is that some of the bad things that happen to us are ultimately for our own good.
BUT THAT would require us to believe an incredibly long list of horrible, inhuman, terrible, horrendous, nightmarish, unforgivable, bad things are actually good, and that whatever happens is part of gods plan, and we can sometimes change that plan through prayer.
    But that raises 2 questions:
    1. If our prayers were worth listening to in the first place, why weren't they part of the original plan?
Did god fail to think of something, or is he adopting a less perfect plan in order to succumb to our wishes?
    2. If even the most unconscionable things that seem bad to us like children starving to death, child molestation, children dying of cancer, or being born without limbs. If all of that is actually part of gods plan, and therefore good, why did he supposedly equip us with a conscience to see these things as bad, and why is our eternal salvation resting on our ability to identify these things as bad?
That is no different than giving someone a broken pair of eyeglasses, telling them to put them on and complete an eye exam. Then, killing them for failing the exam.
Prayer, in my opinion, is an act of doubt AND, an act of worry, not an act of faith. If believers truly trusted in their god’s plan, then why pray?

According to Matthew, Jesus said “ALL” prayers will be granted, even if you pray for a mountain to be moved into the sea. Is there a christian born, who hasn’t prayed for lots of important things that have not come to fruition?
That’s another Jesus lie, just like returning before the disciples lifetimes ended.
One “fulfilled” prayer is solid gold evidence. 100 that are not, are never given a second thought.
Father and daughter in their house. Father prays for rain for his garden, Daughter prays for sunshine to attend friends wedding.
Little Johnny. Prayed for a new bike. It didn’t happen so he stole one and asked for forgiveness.

I think prayer can be useful as a form of meditation. The Catholics have something called "centering prayer" which is not a great deal unlike Buddhist meditation. It was explained to me that when Jesus is quoted as saying "whatever you ask shall be given," he is speaking of gifts of the Spirit, not material things. So supposedly if you pray for an increase in faith, or for courage, etc. It will be given to you in abundance. There are, of course, objections to this perspective, but it seems harmless and may be beneficial for some who are enduring difficulties.

They speak of this back & forth spiritual communication they have with Jesus, he speaks to them but in a "spiritually" way that one must experience to understand. They say you only need to humbly pray for Jesus to come into your heart and he will reveal himself to you, and then the angels sing I guess. *The more I ponder this I think the "Jesus" character in this spiritual relationship that they communicate with is actually their own self talk. We all talk to ourselves, our mind are always working through tasks, random thoughts, impulses and other things, so it appears to me a "split ego" is developed in the mind, so a percentage of self talk goes to ones self, the other percentage to the new ego (Jesus). In time, as years and decades pass, the two egos become blended as if as one. They have successfully, intended or not, molded the two from the years of self-talk. The Christian is now Jesus, Jesus is now the Christian, they are now one of the same. I think that is why it so shocking for Christians when others doubt their beliefs, how can one deny himself? Too long & heavy? Any thoughts from folks out there on this?

In order to get your prayers answered, here are a few tips that might help.
First, don't ask for impossible things, such as world peace or equal opportunities for women.
It's best to ask for things you've already had, for example, toothache or rain when camping.
Remember that God is very busy all over the vast universe, so you need to be patient.

Equal opportunities for women? Wouldn't that be the day. I want women 18-60 in Ukraine and Russia to DEMAND equal opportunity to die in that war, the same as the REAL ADULTS, who are males, who can't and don't flee with the wimpy "women and children". I want wimp YOU to DEMAND that it is unfair for only the 18-year-old boys to die and not the "girls" who are 18-year-old women to die. Give me a break. You want equal opportunity only when it benefits you, not when it's tough. You want equal opportunity, then start pushing for equal responsibility and get angry when women are relegated to "children" status, and quit using the "women and children" banner to cower under whenever adult responsibilities really come along and require adult behavior and assuming adult responsibilities and adult dangers.

“If anyone obeys my teaching he shall never know what it is to die.”
Therefore we must never say prayers of worship in the way of religions; because religions are all led by the many blind guides and false prophets who are misleading us. We must pray to the Lord God (safely in a secret place) and in the way that only Jesus alone teaches, to forgive us the wrong we have done, as we have forgiven those who have wronged us…
“God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” - (Jesus Immanuel the Messiah, at John 4: 24) -
“In truth I tell you, anyone who gives heed to what I say and puts his trust in him who sent me, has hold of eternal life and does not come up for judgement, but has already passed from death to life.” - (John 5: 24) -
“Beware of false prophets, men who come to you dressed up as sheep while underneath they are savage wolves.
For as you judge others, so you will yourselves be judged, and whatever measure you deal out to others will be dealt back to you.” - (Matthew 7: 1-2) -
“Truly I tell you; if anyone obeys my teaching he shall never know what it is to die.” - (John 8: 51) -
“Is there a man among you who will offer his son a stone if he asks for bread or a snake when he asks for fish? If you then, bad as you are, know how to give your children what is good for them, how much more will your heavenly Father give good things to those who ask him!
Always treat others as you would like them to treat you: that is the Law and the Prophets.
Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life and only a few find it.” - (Matthew 7: 9-14) -
“I am the gate; anyone who comes into the fold through me shall be safe.
Everything in the Law and the Prophets hangs on these two commandments.’” - (Matthew 22: 35-40) -
“There is no greater love than this, that a man should lay down his life for his friends.” - (John 15: 13) -
“One of the criminals who hung there also mocked and taunted him: ‘Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself, and us!’ But the other criminal rebuked him. ‘Have you no fear of God? You are under the same sentence as he. For us it is plain justice; we are paying the price for our misdeeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.’ And he said, ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.’ He answered, “I tell you this: today you shall be with me in Paradise.’” - (Luke 23: 39-43) -
“For it is my Father’s will that everyone who looks upon the Son and puts his faith in him shall possess eternal life; and I will raise him up on the last day” - (John 6: 40) -

This topic "The Efficacy of Prayer" is only dealing with one aspect of prayer. Prayer involves so much more than just asking God for things. So just in case anyone thinks that prayer is only about asking God to give me what I've asked for, that's only part of what prayer is.
It is easy to get fixated with the "asking for things" kind of prayers, as it is the area of prayer which does bring up questions, such as "Why didn't God heal my wife/husband/son/daughter etc even though I prayed, believing my loved one would recover."
Personally, as a christian (I have been for many years) I still trust God even though these questions are there - I don't throw away my faith simply because I don't have a guarantee that everything I ask God for will be given me.
And I believe I should continue to ask God to respond to things I ask for, whether it's for a friend to recover from poor mental health, or whether it's to receive finances, or whatever else it might be. I'm not giving everything up just because, for example, a verse like John 14:14 where Jesus says "If you ask anything in my name, I will do it" doesn't bring about what I have asked for all the time.
I have actually found that sometimes God will give me things that I have not even asked for in faith. Like when I had serious depression. and didn't believe I would recover, but I did. I attribute my recovery to the goodness and mercy of God.
God isn't someone you can prove by the formula of "if I get everything I ask from Him, then He's real." The reality of God doesn't stand or fall by whether all our prayers are answered, although Jesus has said we should "Ask and it will be given unto you" Matthew 7:7.
I know most of you out there are dyed-in-the-wool atheists and skeptics, and you find every reason why the Bible isn't God's word,
but there still may be someone who will read this, and will find what I have said helpful.

If your knowledge of the Bible was more than superficial, you’d know the importance of prayer and how it’s not about getting what you selfishly want out of life... Anymore than a woman wants to be used for sex or a man wants to be used for money, God doesn’t want to be used as a Genie in a bottle. Objectifying anyone in a relationship will always produce negative results.

Feiner Fug if you think you can take any one verse and single it out as the whole doctrine to the understanding of the topic... that’s exactly the superficial understanding I’m referring to.

Feiner Fug in no other topic or statement would you take a statement and apply it as a universal concept.
For example if you stated you were intelligent, that doesn’t mean I would apply that as a universal scale. It’s comparative, subjective, and opinionated. You could be intelligent compared to every dog, but brainless to every human. Every statement has a deeper meaning and superficial outlooks on those statements lead to ignorance.

So you believe it’s wrong to willingly renounce your own freedom to serve others for a contracted amount of time?
      Shall we abolish marriage?
We might as well get rid of our military too...

“I refuse to be full of demons”. I’m an atheist and I just said it out loud. Still an atheist. Let me check... yep, still an atheist. Sorry, I’m not demon possessed. Never have been. That and the implication that atheists are “evil” really isn’t nice. In fact it turns more people away from religion in general if you say that kind of thing. Even back when I was a Christian, I knew nonbelievers who were genuinely kind honorable people. Indeed some of them were more Christlike than many Christians. So to quote the alleged words of Jesus “How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”

Ronald Gray sorry mate, I’m not trusting of people I’ve never met. Besides if your god exists, he is supposed to be all knowing, so he knows I said it. Aside from that, I can perfectly assure you that I am not demon possessed. Never have been and never will be to the best of my knowledge. Implying atheists are demon possessed doesn’t do much to win em to Christ. If anything it drives em away. I am going to not engage in this anymore, I see no point in continuing to argue.
