Fantastic! I really enjoyed the open and honest interview here. You asked her great questions that got great insight from her. I share her view that life in Vietnam is wonderful and My wife is Vietnamese from Hanoi and I'm a bit of a mix.. born in the Caribbean, grew up in Canada and now working in the US.. But although I have a great job, I really don't want to stay here. I met my wife there while visiting an old friend and we have been back to Vietnam many times over the last 10 years. We both want to move to Vietnam with our two kids in the near future but I am still trying to figure out what I would do there. I had a conversation with someone at the Canadian embassy and he advised similarly that the best way to find a job is to be in the country. As a black man, I was really apprehensive at first but fell in love with the country and the people/culture and found the culture amazingly open and welcoming. Honestly, I have the best time and never felt freer than when in Vietnam. This interview I think pushes me one step forward in formalizing plans to move there. At least I am familiar with the language and culture already. But not sure as a well educated black person what my options are if I am not working for a foreign entity. I guess I could start a business.. Seems like that is a thing. I would love to see you have someone talk more in depth about foreigners opening businesses in Vn if you haven't already developed that content. Thanks! :)
What a superb interview to give viewers a glance into the life of a South African expats here. She is a giddy and brisk young fellow. Personally, I also know a South African teacher in Vietnam who escaped the mental torment of divorce which haunted him for years. Now he has married a Vietnamese woman and definitely loves his life.

It’s giving you a sense of superiority when people are amazed when you speak their language in VN. It’s the opposite reaction when you are in a rich country like the US and try to communicate people tend to keep asking you “what did you say” or simply “what” because they don’t have the time to be amazed. As a tourist or expat you don’t really need to “speak” the local language. You need only to “understand” so you know when they cheat you, talk bad about you and make fun of you like I often tested it when I visited France and specially Paris to see if people are polite or not by acting like a tourist and only talk to them in fluent French before leaving the place to warn them that not all tourists are “stupid”.

Is it culturally frowned upon to stay in Vietnam for a year renewing 90 Day tourist visas? I meandered around Vietnam for 3 months in 2006 and fell in love with this incredible country.
Hi. I don't know if it's frowned upon in VN but it is frowned upon in TH & Malaysia. I've heard that in those 2 countries, after living there for 6 or 9 months on a tourist visa, they won't give you another tourist visa extension & you'll need another type of visa (work, business, education visa, etc). I know of a Russian TH-camr who's been in VN for maybe 6 months on a tourist visa (doing regular visa runs to nearby countries). In Cambodia, you can get a 1 year business visa.

VN is also cheap until you don't have any money then you will see how the locals treat you. Vietnamese love rich foreigners who spend their money foolishly and easy to be scammed. So one friendly advice : make as much money as you can (as English teacher for example) and prepare the retreat as soon as you can.
I don't know about Vietnam but as a black American in Thailand, I always got paid the same rate as any of other Westerner/native speaker. Also, most of the Filipinos and many of the South Africans I met teaching English were clearly not native English speakers. At least half of the Filipinos I met who were qualified teachers spoke broken English.
I like the comment about being a native-speaking South African. Not all South Africans are native English speakers, it's a fact. The authorities and schools should check the grade 12 certificates of potential teachers. If the certificate has English as the first language, then in all probability, they are English-speaking. However, if it states any other language is the candidate's first language, in that case, they shouldn't be teaching English unless they have a degree with English as a major as they are definitely not native English speakers.

Does Vietnam still prefer White English teachers over Asian? A few years ago, a Viet Kieu TH-camr said while both he and his wife are teachers, his wife got hired on her first interview because she is White. He interviewed at several places but never got an offer. Then, someone finally told him that Vietnamese parents (being ignorant) only want their children to learn English from White teachers. Doesn't matter if the guy was borned in America and spoke English without an accent :(
I’ve noticed that locals who learned English from white teachers tend to have bad grammar and an accent of a lower socioeconomic white person from the US.
No, it’s not right, my teachers in Vietnam are White, Black, Brown, South Asian, Southeast Asian and East Asian! And they are super nice and we love them!❤

You can buy a house or rent an apartment in VN but always select your neighbors who think and act like yourself and not mingle with locals because it will cause you a lot of trouble by not understanding their habits and culture. And remember nobody will say bad things about you because you are coming to VN and making a good living as an English teacher than finding a job and “respect” in your own country.
Learning an Asian language as a native English speaker is a full time job. It’s not like learning basic Spanish. People who think you should fully learn the language of the country you’re in are shortsighted.
In a nutshell: If you are, white, male, and from a well-known English-speaking country, the pay will be fair; but if you happen to be a woman, dark skinned, and from a developing country or Southeast Asia, there is a high chance that your pay will not be as fair, despite being highly qualified.

My friend who was working there that I visited when I first went to Hanoi was in the international development domain. I was honestly a little shocked at some of the comments I heard from a friend of hers who apparently thought very little of the people and culture he was there to help. I don't think any but one of the white folks I met there actually took the time to learn the language despite being there for several years. What a loss for them I suppose.
Well interesting. If you are black or color people then you make less money with the same position in Viet Nam. So in the US the companies treat people better. I came from Viet Nam in the 80s, got scholarship and studied computer engineering. At that time, the magazine "Times" wrote an article about us "Jewish children of the 80s" about the Viet kids in the university who studied science, engineering, ... the professors only said "We did not recommend you to enter STEM, ...." Well to be practical, we are from poor country we need to study whatever that easy to find job and make a lot of money. Electronic Design Automation did make a lot of money in the past and now due to Artificial Intelligent and the paid not bad.
My experience was different, my teachers were coming from all different backgrounds and they got treat the same in HCM City! I don’t know other area! There were one time there was an agressive White teachers at my school and we reported to Principal and weeks after he got kicked out! So it’s fair!
There is a difference between Black and White teacher, because many Vietnamese parents, old generation, still think that English native speakers are white.
It will be fair to TH-cam viewers that you also interview people who are disappointed after living in VN and plan to go back to their countries. Otherwise the viewers will think you are paid by the Vietnamese propaganda department. I don't believe that 100% of the people who chose VN to live is a realistic figure. It will be interesting to know why people are disappointed of their choice when moving to VN in the 1st place.
You don’t need to speak Vietnamese when you are in the country. The reason is people who don’t understand or speak English belong to the working class and it’s just fun for them that you try to speak to them in Vietnamese. However if you want to make a living in VN by teaching English you should play dumb and limit your Vietnamese speaking skill to a minimum because your students expect you to teach them and converse with them in English and not Vietnamese. May be I am wrong but Vietnamese who can afford to pay someone to teach them English are very “arrogant” and want to show off a lot and it’s not their fault because the media keeps telling them that VN is #1 and soon will surpass even Singapore. One typical example is when they won a soccer match vs Thailand they paraded in the streets, insulted the Thai’s players and partied all night to wake up drunk and go to work for a company owned by Thai’s business man.
How easy is it to illegally work in Vietnam as a Viet Kieu? Do you have any experience or may know someone? Know anyone who got caught? And were they fined and/or deported? Unless you are a digital nomad, have a work permit, or have savings, I assume you would have to work illegally if you plan to live in Vietnam for several years.
I get sick of how different some schools or centers in general pay foreign English teachers based on their skin colours or nationalities. Thats racism, unfairness and bullshit.

In Vietnam if you're a foreigner and speak basic Vietnamese words the daily life is much more fun because the locals are amazed😁

She made equivalent to $700 US dollars per month in her first year is good amount. The biggest expense is lodgings as food is cheap in VN.

Most of these english teachers in vietnam aren't even qualified all they did was take a quick teaching course lol.
