    The biggest issue I had with the portal, the microstutter mismatch, of 59.75hz remote play output not fitting the 60hz portal screen output, is now fixed.
    Any hitches now are purely Wi-Fi related, and for me thats rare, and fair enough. Portal now feels like a decent experience.

      Yes this was such a massive difference for me with user experience. I couldn’t play it before and nearly traded it in.. then tried after cloud update and it’s pretty much flawless. I’m surprised Rich didn’t think the stuttering was much different. To me it’s massive obviously better

      @@dinkomalinko8585I was surprised too. The truth here is I actually sold my portal about two months ago after not using it much, due to the stutter largely. I ordered a new one after the update and the claim the stutter was fixed.
      When I heard Rich say it wasn’t I was thinking ‘Ah, well I guess I’ll making use of that 30 day returns policy then.’ However, when it arrived and I tried it, the difference really was inarguable, and huge.

      Yes, the update has clearly improved the stuttering, and the fact that Digital Foundry doesn't even notice the improvement shows the low level of their analysis, which is very disappointing!

    I have one and hadn’t really been using it. I’m using it now. No longer limited to what I have downloaded to the PS5. Of course I have some sunk cost bias. But I had considered selling it, and now I’m keeping it cuz it seems a bit more future proof. Just my subjective experience.

    I've had a Portal since launch. Initially i had huge issues with disconnecting and very low bitrate issues even with 1gbps fiber and WiFi 6 mesh. But then I discovered one of the CAT cables was to blame and since i replaced it, Portal has been perfect. I finished all of Elden Ring DLC and Astro Bot (inc all challenge levels) on it and that was before this update. For me, its been an excellent addition to my gaming lifestyle. I think sometimes we just need to be grateful for the insane technology we have available. Nothing is ever perfect but Portal for me is most of the way there

    I play Fallout 76. Locally, there is essentially no latency or stutter. The clarity isn't as good since its only 1080p. But the fact that I can play it on the toilet is a win for me.

    The Portal has been the absolute biggest surprise of 2024 for me. I'm a PC-heavy gamer who (as of 2 months ago) owned a launch edition PS5 because there are some Sony titles I want to be there for on Day 1. I've tried so many game streaming solutions over the years, dating back to the Nvidia Shield in 2014. I'm a huge believer in the idea that your game should be running on the device locally for optimal performance and reduced input lag.
    I picked up the Portal 6 weeks ago on a lark, because I found an open box sale for about 40 bucks off MSRP. I loaded up some games and instantly felt blown away by both the input response and the overall image quality. I honestly had no idea Sony had done such a good job with Remote Play, as I've never tried it before owning a Portal. There are a few games where the input lag absolutely CAN ruin the experience (like Doom Eternal), but overall even most 3rd person action games like Control run very well over Remote Play.
    Then I went crazy and bought a PS5 Pro, and started playing Alan Wake 2 on the thing. It really hit me one evening lying in bed with my wife - I'm enjoying a huge triple-A game with ray-tracing effects on a handheld. Even my Steam Deck OLED can't currently do that (though I will concede the SD OLED blows the Portal out of the water in terms of screen quality). Additionally, I wasn't stuck in the living room with the PS5. I could enjoy a story-based game with her in bed, and she started getting invested in it since I was next to her and progressing through the game.
    I sat up last night for two hours straight playing Stellar Blade on that new Pro visual mode with the HFR mode engaged. I was taking down difficult bosses and hitting my dodge and parry timings extremely well. I'm absolutely in love with this thing, and I can't believe I got it for 160 bucks.

    • @ItzMeWill
      @ItzMeWill หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You know your Steam Deck can do the same thing, right? Steam also has remote play and it works great.. you can stream your whole steam library from your PC to your Steam deck or even your phone..so just like how the Portal works, you can also play Triple A game with ray tracing on your Steam deck..if you have the proper PC hardware for ray tracing, of course

    • @HorseheadNebula85
      @HorseheadNebula85 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ItzMeWill I have tried streaming PC games to my Steam Deck, but it's nowhere near as smooth as running PS5 titles on the Portal. I think that probably has to do with my PC being in a totally different room from the WiFi router, so I'm unable to plug directly in via Ethernet. By contrast, the PS5 is plugged directly into the router because the router sits on our TV console, so it's easy to hook it directly in.
      One thing I do want to try in the future is Chiaki4Deck, because I've yet to try streaming PS5 titles to the Steam Deck.

      @@HorseheadNebula85 o ok.. i gotcha...That probably explains why my remote play is so good. I have both my PS5 and PC plugged straight into router. Probably also helps that I have a 1 gig internet connection..
      I don't have a Portal but I like to stream both to my PS5 and PC to my Iphone.. The remote play for both is seamless. My first time seeing it. I couldn't believe my eyes. It almost feels like I was playing native..My mind was blown.. Even though I was directly connected to fast internet. I was still expecting some latency. Might be a tiny bit there but it's so small that I always end up forgetting about it

The streaming quality has improved a LOT for me. In the beginning it was terribly blurry with loads of artifacts & it would degrade every so often to a garbled mess. Lately it's been very stable and sharp enough where I feel games are actually playable this way. It still looks like a game with FSR 2.0 set to medium or so and there is definitely some latency.

    I’ve been enjoying my Portal since launch. My PS5 and PS5 Pro are hardwired and I have a WiFi 7 router, so my experience has been fine. I play The Crew Motorfest on it a lot at night. I think DF is missing the point, especially with the last comment on the video, that this product isn’t about anything discussed in the video - none of that matters - it’s just the convenience and experience of being able to pick up the Portal and enjoy your game when you want without really disturbing anyone, that’s why it is selling well and e why nothing said in the video really takes away from that. I have a backbone for my iPhone and it’s just not the same because they lack the dual sense functions. Enjoyed the “technical” review (should have verified if Control stutters on console though!) but it’s clear that you guys have zero love for the product or product category at all.

      It's a step in the right direction though, and with the rumors of a local device in the works, I'll be a little more patient.
      The issue with the device is remote play/streaming, but the build quality feels premium, and the most comfortable portable device to play on. Unfortunately for me, my hands on time wasn't enough to convince me sinceyou get a much better remote play experience with chiaki on the Ally, but if the rumurs are true, and they make a fully local handheld with a similar build quality, it's an instant buy for me!

If you are running late to a meeting but you're hungry, then the convenience-oriented value proposition of fast food just may appeal more to that consumer than someone else with plenty of time and access to other food options. I think a lot of people just don't get it about the Portal. It's not for everyone, you either like the concept and can make use of it or if you're not, then just don't mind it. Me for example, I use it if I'm not home, or if I'm home and still want the TV on, or want to play in another room. Quality is great if your Wi-Fi is good and stable. Great image quality with a little bit more lag. But imagine the hardware you'd need (and its price and battery life) to be able to do the same natively. I think now they just need to keep improving the quality of the streaming and of course work on a real handheld, but the price will be steep when it'll release...

    The question is really simple: Is this device the best way of utilizing Remote Play. Based on this being a first-party dedicated device designed to do just that suggest it might be. The fact that you can just push a button and your in, and can still use your phone for phone stuff independently is a selling point to me.

    If you are going to live up to the pedigree of "Digital Foundry" I would expect you to put in the work to make a detailed review for a product released from a major manufacturer.
    This podcast format has given DF a bad habit of putting out these mediocre segments which do not live up to the "Digital Foundry" pedigree.

    The downside is that Playstation Plus Cloud Streaming is not available in many parts of the world.
    Here in Brazil, for example, we have Xbox xCloud and even NVidia Geforce Now, but no PS Plus Cloud Streaming and no sign that we will have it anytime soon, so this PS Portal update ends up being useless for us.
    What is most frustrating is that as PS3 games are only available via streaming we end up losing this, I even believe that this is why the PS3 is still such an active console with almost 2 million active users since Because of this, most people end up buying a PS3 to play PS3 games because they have no other option.

    The highlight of subjectivity is pretty notable here when it comes to the Portal. Explains why those approaching it ready to hate generally walk away hating it, and vice versa. As someone who was away from home during the time Portal launched, it was simply the only option I had to play my PS5 in a non-janky manner. But now that i am local again + having a Deck, I'm surprised how much I'm still using the Portal. For example, Dragon Age Veilguard was "free" on the highest tier of Geforce Now, but I ended up buying it on PS5 for hassle-free reasons. But it provided the interesting opportunity to test the Deck & Portal's cloud streaming capabilities side-by-side. Obviously GFN runs the game at higher settings, but at that screen size (not to mention it's lower resolution than the Portal), I had to really strain to notice. The latency blows the Portal out of the water (usually down to just 5ms). But the image quality on the Portal is significantly better. Panning left to right, my character's face becomes a smudge on the Deck while streaming, compared to the Portal holding steady without breaking down like that.
    For certain shooters, the Portal is a hard sell as a streaming device. I got away with playing The Finals on it for months, but the moment it became compatible for Deck, I switched to it in a heartbeat despite having to play everything on Low and still getting significant drops. But for the vast majority of other games, the Portal does cross the threshold of "forgetting I'm streaming" for me, and I know my kid-self would have loved this thing. But even 26-self loves this thing tbh. Not a dad, just someone who likes having full games in a portable form factor like this.

It's a shame they stuck with an outdated WIFI protocol, but if you have a mesh array its flawless. I never played games again on the 65'' TV and just play the Portal in the comfort of the bed. It has done wonders to crushing the backlog this year. Something about picking up and playing that just gives you so much more gaming time. I left the Steam Deck and Switch catching dust ever since. I'm comparing it to moonlight/sunshine streaming from my PC and the portal can't match what moonlight does on my steam deck. 60fps, zero stutter, almost no latency.
      Heck, the portal couldn't even match what PS/PSXplay did on my Steam deck, streaming from the ps5. The portal was jittery, laggy and a worse experience than the 3rd party open source apps on a 3rd party device (steam deck).
      Shame because I really liked the ergonomics of the portal, much better than the steam deck. Although I didn't care for the miniature thumbsticks sony chose to use for the Portal.
