Network engineer here, wanted to note some things: 1. It doesn't matter if you have the PS5 Pro with WiFi 7 if your access points don't support WiFi 7, or if they aren't configured correctly for WiFi 7. 2. WiFi 7 is very new and 99% of people won't have any noticeable benefits over WiFi 6, even if all hardware supports it. 3. You should ideally have the PS5 hardwired (GbE, avoid FE), which you did mention. 4. WiFi 5 should be sufficient if you have your PS5 hardwired, since obviously the Portal only supports WiFi 5. And you don't get any extra range out of the box with WiFi 6 or 7, that depends on radio hardware. 5. Channel width is very important in the case of wireless streaming. Too high can cause instability, too low can limit throughput. 6. In places where high speed internet is available (e.g., symmetrical gigabit fiber), and if you have a quality router, internet streaming from your own PS5 should be configurable to work just as well as Sony cloud streaming. Plus a lot more possible considerations I won't get into, but the point is, there's a lot of factors that will affect performance. (Disclaimer: I don't own a PS5 or PS Portal, and I personally think the PS Portal is not an ideal product in general.)
@@shayes.x the fact that phones can do the same thing without any issues on the same network should prove the point that it's a Sony specific problem and not wifi. I swear I'm going insane watching content creators talk about wifi 7 like it's some magical thing that's going to fix everything when most people still have their router in the basement in 2024 💀
It’s the lack of wired connection from the PS5 to the router that’s the problem. My partner has a Portal and had pretty bad input lag when her PS5 was on WiFi, but it largely improved when we ran an Ethernet drop to the console. It’s still not perfect, but it’s not nearly as bad as it was.
It is embarrassing that the psportal only support wifi 5. Probably why DF found AT BEST +80ms input latency on top of system latency. You would think they would have shipped it with wifi 6e or 6 at minimum.
Say what you will but I’ve absolutely loved coming home tired from work and hopping in bed with the portal instead of sitting at my desk 🤷♂️ love this thing
I don't think the issue is what the portal can do, the issue is that your phone also does that, or even better a steam deck, which can stream from your playstation, or play titles locally. Obviously the steam deck costs some money, so you might argue its for those who cant afford a steam deck but you already own a phone and a ps5 controller. So this is really only for peole who can specifically afford a portal but not a steam deck and cant/don't access their ps5 very often. Its a niche market.
@@JoeNokersyeah I hate that people justify the portal by saying “well I like it”. You can do the exact same thing from your phone and that’s where they took the idea from. Finally having cloud gaming is cool but it’s not what people assumed was coming out.
Just got the 30th anniversary edition portal. I have remote played from outside my home with my steam deck Mac and iPad and the lag is noticeably better on the portal than any other device. At home I can comfortably play BO6 with hardly any lag.
A few things to note. You don’t need to hard wire it directly to the modem/router. I have my ps5 in the basement and my modem on the first floor of my house. I used a power line adapter (fairly cheap on Amazon maybe 30$). I tested it and it’s pretty much as good as hard wiring it in terms of speeds and in terms of experience I’ve had 0 to minimal lag or stutter etc. Mind you I don’t play for several hours a day though I don’t have time For me, the portal is way better than playing on a phone using a separate controller. It’s not even close in terms of convenience and the size of the screen and ergonomics on holding it in your hand. It’s just not close. I can see how it’s not for everyone especially given the price it’s not cheap. But with the addition of cloud gaming it’s pretty good for me and I don’t care to use my phone for remote play ever draining its battery. The portal battery is insane.
The addition of cloud streaming in the portal is an absolute game changer for me. I have great internet and WiFi, and this worked flawlessly for me. I noticed no lag and, as a father of 3 kids, I don’t have access to my PS5 most days. I ridiculed this device when it was first announced, but I was won over.
@ of course they are… but the cheapest Steam Deck starts at double the price so I’m not sure there is a direct comparison. The portal is literally an accessory and not a standalone. It’s only really good if you already have a library of PS5 games and a PS Plus subscription
@bland9876 i have a steamdeck at home with wifi or work with wifi the steam deck dont play games as good as the portal and the way it looks..... im playing right now i havent touched my steam deck since this update, i use them for diffrent reasons... but if m honest im playing full ps5 games on this and it feels better then the deck
JUST A NOTE : THE PS PLUS STREAMING JUST LIKE THE GAMEPASS STREAMING DOESN'T WORK IN SOME COUNTRIES, SO Y'ALL MIGHT CHECK IF IT'S AVAILABLE IN YOURS BEFORE GETTING EXCITED! 💬
@@ThatDevilCookie I guess it depends on where you live, for me I'm from the middle east and I can't use streaming at all even from back in the day with ps now if you remember that.
It is likely because I have my PS5 hardwired, but my experience has been really solid with the Portal over the last week since I got mine. I didn't even get it for the cloud streaming, although I have tried that and found the connection to be lacking compared to streaming from my PS5. I do lose a frame here or there, but it is consistent enough for me to play a round of Fortnite or a level or two of Astro Bot. It was also perfect for lounging around yesterday and checking out all the content in Tetris Forever.
just the comment i was looking for . still in the middle of watching the video . But he isnt talking about ethernet cable connection to the ps5 yet . mine is and it is rock solid . and for casual single player games that dont need quick timing or response i rock it every day . runs smoothly and i can bare the "input lag" on a chill single player game
If someone streams a lot or wants to play their PS5 games on the go it is really a good piece of equipment and so much better than on a phone because it's so much more comfortable and has a much bigger screen. So for just 220 you have all you need.
I suggest getting the Retroid Pocket 5 at that point cuz it'll stream it better and has a better screen and processor. I'm saying this cuz I own a Portal and never use it rather use my Odin 2 or Ally since its better connection.
To me, the Portal was a great investment. As a married man who shares couch time with the wife, It definitely allowed me to play my PS5 a lot more. Before the portal, i would mostly stick with the Switch. I love the PSPortal! Also, i was able to get the 30th Anniversary edition! Now i have 2 lol
As a dad, the Portal is PERFECT for me when sharing the big TV with everyone at home. I tried the PS5 remote play via my iPhone15 Pro Max attached to my PS5 controller but the Ergonomics are terrible… did not like the experience. The Portal is light and a perfect screen that simulates a 65” screen for me on the distance I have my regular TV. I hardwire my PS5 and get very stable connection to my Portal. I assume Sweden in general av very good internet so I hardly ever have issues with my gaming experience. The two things I didn’t like on the Portal was Bluetooth and to lower the lowest volume when not using wired headphones. And the last one they fixed with latest update. It’s great for my needs 👍🏻
Just bought mine 2 days ago, also in Sweden. Loving mine! Question, I keep on reading about setting a specific channel in the router or something like that, any idea on how to do this?
It is great for this use case and I’m glad you’re enjoying it. I am still not a fan of the device because you can buy a controller with great ergonomics to attach to your phone for less than $100. With this you wouldn’t just be limited to the PS5 either. Xbox cloud gaming, PS remote play, Xbox remote play, whatever games you can get on your phone. I personally use it to remote play my pc with an app called sunshine and it’s fantastic. PS portal is for those who really only play PS5 and feel they want/need a device that is exactly a ps5 controller
@@mohamadelwafai9648 Tjena tjena! :) Are you referring to this setup/settings in the PS5 options so it will allow to be woken up both via your own home wifi AND if you want to play away from home maybe? There is a setting in there that is recommended to activate to also use it outside of your home from other networks. I don't remember exaclty where it was, but should be simple to do a quick google on! Recommended! And, hardwire it to your router is also recommended. Been playing "Darksiders" for many hours today, works soooo good while my wife watches movies and my son plays Fortnite there :D
I don’t think you are dumb for saying those things because they incredibly valid points. But for a person like me that doesn’t even notice the tiny lag it has been great! I’ve played silent hill 2 remake on it and I can only play in bed after the kids go to bed.
I got my husband one when they released and we had a lot of trouble with it. It wouldn't connect and stay connected. Now with the update he's able to play it better and it seems to be staying connected.
Yeah until you try on an actual good device like steam deck or GCloud. Then you realize the the Portals streaming ability is kinda mid. Decent for sure, but not on par with other options.
@BeHempy I haven't tried the other devices but having a controller this comfortable on portal and ps5, streaming with no issues from literally everywhere and playing games I want beginning to end with seamless transition between both is amazing to me
I love my Portal. It’s a thing about having something that works well. Sure, you could spend more and get more, but why would you when you’re content with what you have?
I have a Portal, and I do like it, but my particular situation is very specific. I work a lot and when I get home and have a little bit of time to game, I want to do it while laying in bed. The Portal allows me to do that. That’s it. That’s the whole reason I got it and the whole reason I like it. I also bought it for $100 from a guy who won it in a contest, so I got it at 50% off. Is it good enough to warrant a $200 purchase for most people? Probably not.
Streaming to the Steam Deck using Chiaki has an advantage over all other streaming devices as far as I can tell. You can enable HDR while streaming. So streaming looks insanely good on my Steam Deck. Also the Steam Deck OLED WiFi is much improved. I get no dropped frames or stuttering at all. My PS5 is hardwired though. The only issues I have are slight input lag, I can definitely tell but it’s really not that bad. The other thing is about 5 minutes in to my session, it will just fail to connect to the ps5. I have to close Chiaki and reopen and then I can stream for hours without issues. It is strange that it will do this ever single time. It also does this with moonlight though, so I think it is something with the Steam Deck. So my guess, the ps portal just needs better hardware. Definitely needs a better WiFi chip. But it also may need a better CPU to increase bit rate. Cranking it on the Steam Deck makes it extremely stable.
I've had the opposite happen to me. Chiaki on my OG Steam Deck works god awful, most of the time audio breaks and many times even video stops working. Which is why I decided to cough up the money for the PS Portal and it has been working great, managed to beat all of Astro Bot on it.
@@VilasNil I never tried it on my lcd steam deck before I upgraded to the oled. I read that the oled has a much better WiFi chip. So maybe that is a big part of it. I would get the portal too if I had problems. I play my PS5 so much via remote play.
Chiaki the newest one is amazing I use it all the time even used it during my holiday with hotel WiFi. I didn’t hardwire it but have 1gbps fiber optics internet at home and the ps5 is only 2 meters away from the router.
Chiaki ,the newest one, is amazing I use it all the time and even used it during my holiday with hotel WiFi. I didn’t hardwire my ps5, have 1gbps fiber optics internet at home and the ps5 is only 2 meters away from the router.
I struggled setting Chiaki up on my Steam Deck for ages, and didn't figure it out until the day my PlayStation Portal arrived. 😅 I'd recommend it for anyone with a Steam Deck, especially the OLED ones, since the Portal doesn't do HDR. It's way wonkier, but I don't think $200 is worth that convenience.
Works great for me. My tv is always tied up and I don't wanna use my phone. The wifi connection has been pretty good. I took it to a hospital while my loved one had surgery and it worked great on the public wifi. Played and beat astros playroom with no issues.
Really, not a single issue? No lag or stuttering on public wifi... Yeah ok. Then you need to pack and ship that bad boy back to Sony because that's one hell of an anomaly.
@@dannonyogurt98didn't work when I try to use my phone as a hotspot. At work we have a pretty tied up Network and I was able to use that to play Hades.
The biggest deal with the 4.00 update, and my major beef previously with the Portal, is the fixed microstutter. Apparently remote play outputs at 59.75hz, and the portal screen 60hz. This update corrects that discrepancy and panning and lateral movement is now overwhelmingly smooth, to the point where the odd hitch doesn’t really bother me. I’d say for £200, if you have a decent library of games or subscribe to PS+, a decent WI-FI setup, then the Portal is a good device.
As a successful video game content creator, you have a lot more options than the average person. So though I don't think you're "dumb," I don't think you objectively see it from the perspective of the average person. The Portal is $200. I paid half that for the backbone alone, that is not as comfortable in the hands, doesn't have the haptics/triggers of a DualSense or a rather pleasant 8" screen included in that price. So from a value proposition, I think the price of the Portal is rather compelling from that perspective. If I wasn't already grandfathered into Premium until 2029, from all my years of hoarding cd keys sales and lucky to have purchased a discounted PlayStation Now subscription during Sony's days of play before they moved to tiers, I would still be able to swing $18 a month, if there is something on the service I want to play. It's what I've been doing with Gamepass Ultimate, and that's $20 a month. Objectively, no other device would give you access to the PlayStation ecosystem at the Portal's price point for those interested.
And the argument "just use your phone" well your going to be changing that thing every year, otherwise your battery would be so dead ... Having a dedicated device for remote play is so much better
The backbone also gave you access to Xbox streaming, PC streaming, emulation, and Android games. The value issue with the portal is its lack of versatility, if you only play games on your PS5 then I can see the argument for it, but if you do anything else then other devices will make more sense, even considering price. For $80 more than the Portal a base Odin 2 will support any remote streaming option, emulate pretty much everything except the newest systems, and will chew through heavy Android games like genshin and call of duty. The only thing you lose as of this new update is ps plus streaming.
@@JubalVoidAs a proud owner of an Odin 2, the screen is tiny for streaming modern games though. It's a beast for emulating older games. But playing modern games on a 6in screen is torture
Honestly, Nintendo back in 2014 was doing it so much better with the Wii U having the gamepad with almost zero to none input lag. While still outputting a HD images to the tv. I feel like there’s a way to get around the dam connectivity and lag issues on the portal if sony really wanted to
@@nerfherder33 didn’t say it was a great console lol, I’m saying their streaming technology was pretty good for 2014. The portal is almost 10 years newer so duhhh.
As a parent of two kids under the age of 5, the Portal has been great to get some quick sessions in. I was against the Portal at first, but I received it as a Christmas gift last year and it’s been great to tackle some of my PlayStation backlog while around the house. It does exactly what I need it to do and have not been disappointed with it. I’m an engineer with a background in networking and other areas so my house is properly set up with multiple hardwired PS5s and multiple access points around the house to provide a stable network connection at all times. Anything above WiFi 5 for the Portal would be irrelevant since it wouldn’t be able to effectively use that additional speeds anyway. I’ve had 0 connectivity issues during my year of using the Portal and it’s accomplished everything I’ve wanted it to do. However, this is still my third most used handheld at the moment, with the Steam Deck being in first, and Switch at second.
Im so stoked of getting this. Competing tv with my wife and kids all the time, my ps5 has been on for a year. Tried it with wired connection on my phone it works just fine
Perfect timing! I have no idea what I want for Christmas because I can buy anything I actually want. Figured a Portal would be a good "might as well" but I'm stuck with Comcast where my upload is 5mb on a good day and I'm not gonna pay money to stream from their library.
I would buy a Portal right now if they would just allow a direct-to-ps5 connection like how it worked on PS4 with the Vita. I used to play the PS4 all the time using my Vita when my girlfriend was watching something I didn't like and it worked great for me as long as I was within 20-ish feet of the PS4 with the Vita. And neither of those systems had better WiFi than the PS5 and Portal I'm sure
@mechanicalmonk2020 Then what is? Because it's a huge part of the problems in EVERY review I've seen. You can't tell me if they(Sony) allowed direct system connection the Portals remote play wouldn't be better. I mean the hardware inside has to be better than what was in the Vita and it supported, and succeeded at, direct-to-PS4 connection for remote playing.
There is actually about 200 games, and they are adding few more every few days. Eventually, they want to add more and probably also PS4/PS3 games with ability to purchase games and stream them. And as for me... I dont have PS5. I do have Xbox as my main console and Switch. But after this update I went and got Portal and from my experience, its pretty good. Its like Switch lite, but its PS5 with its own selection of games. I would recommend it. Its neat device and works good for me, and I think that they did bolster sales with this update.
As someone who streams my pc games to multiple devices using sunshine/moonlight setup all the time, I cannot overstate the importance of your source machine (pc or Playstation) being hardwired. If you don't do it, then forget streaming as it will lead to nothing but frustrations (been there done that) . This is not just a Playstation thing, but a streeaming thing.
I really wish the PlayStation portal acted like a Wii U when you’re under the same roof and it just connects to the PlayStation directly instead of trying to jump through Wi-Fi I feel like that would solve a lot of the latency problems
Playstation had Cloud Streaming before during the Vita era called "PS Now" which was discontinued fast due to the Vita not being popular enough I wonder what will happen this time....
I still think the portal is a largely silly product when you probably have options that are functionally free. I’ve begun to enjoy remote play a lot over the last year or two, and it has run perfectly fine on either my phone or laptop. I can’t think of a use case where a new $200 device would fit better than either of the other two options.
Tip: As long as your account is an American account (or based on any of the supported countries), this update will work/be available for you. The problem, however, is that it barely works with just about any wifi. Mine is WiFi six and it doesn't work even when sitting right in front of the console and router. So yeah, good luck getting it to work optimally.
I held out on this and was very skeptical. When they opened preorders for the 30th anniversary stuff while buying the controller I decided to go for it. The first night was laggy and button presses were spotty. The next night I hard wired my ps5 on the opposite side of the house and put my portal on the second router and it’s been a really great experience. I do agree the price is a bit too high $150 feels like a fair price
Still the best US youtuber when it comes to telling the truth. I sent back my second PS Portal after giving it another chance with firmware 4.0: the input lag is still unbearable (for me). And my PS5 is wired to an 8 Gbps connection (yes, you read right, even though the PS5 only supports 1 Gbps :). I think that the choice of Wi-Fi 5 on this device is heresy.
Is your Portal connected to a 5GHz network? If your PS5 is actually hardwired (make sure that it really is using Ethernet instead of Wifi) and your Portal is connected to a 5GHz network with acceptable signal strength. Then it will definitely work great
I work almost 50 miles away from my house... and haven't experienced a single issue streaming or remote play... fix your setup... it's not the portal at fault
Xbox Game Pass just did. It's somewhat limited. You can't play every game you own, but I can play the ones I want (i.e., Star Wars Outlaws, Space Marine 2, Balder's Gate 3, etc.).
I get why people like it. Its way more convenient to walk around the house with a dedicated device than have to carry around a controller with you and also forced to use your phone (and its battery)
Вы просто посмотрите как этот персонаж подаёт информацию.. это же доктор игровых наук, который изобрёл саму суть игр и его мнение лучшее в мире.. а какая экспрессия.. и натренированность век..! Моё почтение!..
I am constantly on the move, utilizing hotel wifi to indulge in my favorite pastime of playing classic PlayStation games on the fly. However, the small screen of my phone hinders my gaming experience, which is why the portal with its larger screen size is a game-changer. I predict a PlayStation portal pro will be released within the next year, or so catering to the needs of casual gamers like myself.
Bob, is it entirely possible that you're just not that invested in the PlayStation ecosystem? It does not matter that you're not. But the fact this device exceeded many people's expectations stands to reason. I use it every day. I don't want to play on my phone or tablet. I want to play my PS games with a DualSense and a screen. I have zero latency issues and a rock-solid connection.
I just returned mine. Every 10 minutes it would disconnect from my PS5. Looked it up online and it seems to be a common problem. Everyone says it's not a portal issue but Wi-Fi issue. Yet I have a super expensive third-party router and fiber. I have ZERO issues with anything else I own. The portal is the only thing that has issues. I tried all the suggested fixes. Yet every 10 minutes, portal would freeze and then 1 minute later it would say it lost connection to the PS5. I'll just stick with my Steam Deck and use my iPad+Dual Sense combo to remote play my PS5.
Bob - Try plugging the PS5 Pro/console **directly into the modem** - Not the *router* but the actual modem itself. That will eliminate your issues. Please try this.
I actually love the PlayStation Portal i got mine today and it runs much better tham remote play and I have been playing GTA 5 with no slow down it plays almost like a native PlayStation 5 game and it was also running from the cloud this device is amazing
Picked up the 30th anniversary edition. So far, loving it! Having a wired connection to the PS5 should basically be a requirement. It significantly improved the Portal’s performance. Much much smoother and consistent experience.
It is weird, but remote play is pretty bad on my phone, but is completely fine on my Portal. I never planned on getting a portal, but got one as a gift. Honestly it is been great using it, especially when my roommates are on the TV. Surprisingly, it has been good even when I remote in at work. Helldivers, FF7 and FF16 are fully playable even when I am miles away from my console.
I mean I love my portal, so much better for my home life (kids, wife etc,). But I do agree it could be so much better. I feel Sony made this budget portal to see how public review.
The portal was from day 1 as a very specific the for a very specific person like for me if a football game was on i can play the ps5 and watch the game yes I can use my phone and go blind trying to see things the portal is going to get better I think and I also think they will give us better games
Thank you for showing some Astro Bot footage. It reminded me that I need to pick up another copy of Super Mario Odyssey while it's on sale for Black Friday.
I tried my ps portal for the first time in months just because of the update. And I have to say mine has way less lag than before. It's still there but it's less often and definitely is working better for me. It's going to vary for sure
did u try turning off vrr, hdr, allm and setting the display out to 1080p before remoting from portal. I say this because I had a lot of issues at first and this actually helped it alot. It is a massive pain in the ass and I still sometimes do it if I have issues and restarting router doesnt' fix it. I wonder if it has something to do with the fact the ps5 is still sending a 4k signal to tv at same time which u can tell just by turning on ur tv. Maybe its more taxing or not converted/scaled somehow, but it seemed to help with mine. I feel like this is somethnig that shouldn't affect, but it is what it is.
As an owner of one: the major pros for me is the hardware/form-factor as in I LOVE the 8" screen I think it's my new sweet-spot for a portable and of course having a dualsense attached is also great. Cons are even with my PS5 hardwired and the portal on good 5GHz connection it's still worse lag/latency than Moonlight or even Chiaki so Sony still has some optimization to do and why it only has wifi5 for a dedicated streamer is still anybody's guess. One of those little baffling sony decisions like no disk drive on the PS5Pro or proprietary memcards in the Vita.
Let's be real. Sony made a device that you could take on the go and stream your Playstation to. Unfortunately, no one gave a shit about the Vita. It was way before it's time.
I’m pretty sure 2.4 and 5 ghz are different frequencies. Think of it like a radio, most devices use 5ghz frequency band so 2.4ghz has less noice. That statement would be opposite 10 years ago when household phones were commonly on 2.4ghz
Even with all of this, I still say that for anyone who wants a tablet even almost exclusively for remote play and streaming, even a Logitech g cloud or budget android tablet with detachable controllers would still be better, as it supports both of these features and could have the convenience of being a Cloud only Device if that’s what you wanted, but both for less money and with significantly more functionality.
I really dig my portal. My ps5 is hardwired and it runs remote play great. Every once in a while it will get all choppy when I first connect. Whenever I resarted the portal the connection was great. The thumbsticks are the best of all the handhelds out in my opinion. It's pretty cool and now streaming games is available. Things dope.
Ppl will downplay the PS Portal till the end of time, TRY IT YOURSELF. Pick one up now while stores offer extended return windows for the holidays. See how you like it, test it all around your house and return it if you're not impressed. But as i can tell you first hand the Portal is night and day better than it was at launch. To the point where even if you returned it before, it's worth picking up again.
So, here in Kazakhstan we have official Sony department which is doing commerce and e-commerce too. Part of it is selling disc versions of PS5. But there is no PSN. So without violating PSN's eula you can only play disc version. So they decided to sell PS Portal too. And no cloud streaming here too due to PSN absence. So you can buy PS5, buy a disc version of a game, insert disc into PS5 and then play from your Portal. The only possible legal scenario. And Sony definitely knows about PSN region workarounds and does nothing with this to make everything legal.
I started with a phone and a backbone, the upgrade when I got a portal was huge! You get way better controllers, a much larger screen, and most importantly the ability to disconnect from the world and chill with a game. The portal is such a better experience that it’s not a super useful comparison. The real question becomes should you get one of these or spend the extra to get an Ally X.
The Playstation portal having wifi 5 (802.11AC that we've had for a decade) is easily it's largest questionable aspect. Why they would choose this for a streaming only device, I'll never know.
It works flawlessly now. At least for me. Bought it day one, extremely disapppointed with it, didnt touch it much. Since the last update been using it everyday for hours straight without much hassle. The only annoying thing that happens is it fails to connect to ps5 the first attempt but on the second attempt connects in a few seconds.
I live in Australia and run both my PS5 and Portal off my phone hotspot 100% of the time as I can't get wired internet where I am. I haven't had any issues it runs smooth and i play COD. Haven't played on the TV since getting the Portal. I have taken my ps5 to a friend house and plugged my ps5 into their wired connection and my portable actually ran worse for some reason. Now that I have to Portal I'd never play on my phone again as the Portal is way better for me. I really hope they release cloud gaming for the Portal in Australia soon.
Thank you for revisiting this because I was curious. I saw that 30th anniversary release and admit it makes the portal look a lot better but I don’t own a PS5 yet and still don’t quiet get where it fits into PlayStation’s vision. I love my steam deck but admittedly don’t use it much handheld anymore as I do docked. I do enjoy it on the couch for my first play though on hollow knight 😊 very fun so far I like the little grubs I think they’re called they’re cute and my niece got a plushie that makes the in game sound. Anyway, I don’t know what I’d use a Portal for even if I had a PS5 today as I’d be more of a couch gamer. I do like the idea of a docked setup for my office space to take between the rooms of the house but I can’t think of much else 🤔 it’s neat though but too expensive for my needs. I got a refurbished steam deck to save cost 😊 so the portal and PS5 is an investment for me. Edit: ooh 😯 saw the price was $199 that’s better 🤔 but I’m still not sure where it fits into the whole PlayStation ecosystem and cloud streaming but it looks good 😊
It's worth noting that depending on where you live, the Sony cloud screaming out right doesn't exist. If you're in New Zealand, you are offered nothing which makes this new addition utterly meaningless.
I have Spectrum WiFi in NYC and cloud streaming on my PS Portal has been incredible. It feels like I’m playing the game natively. I was 20+ feet away from my router and in another room and it was still streaming perfectly
It seems like every criticism of the Portal completely misses the point of the console. I’ve tested remote play on iPhone, iPad, and MacBook several times before getting a Portal, and I can say with 100% certainty that there is a significant improvement in connection, picture quality, and input lag compared to other third-party solutions. Plus, the comfort and ergonomics are on another level, obviously. So, I get really confused when I see some TH-camrs reviewing this device and claiming it has no value. Look, I’m not saying it’s perfect. It definitely has more flaws as a product than the Switch or maybe the Steam Deck. The connection is better than other devices, but it can still be frustrating at times, depending on your router. And yes, it’s just a remote player. It would be much cooler if it had the power of a Steam Deck. But isn’t that the whole point? To be a simple accessory for playing the PS5 in another room while someone else is using the TV, or when you just want to relax, and still have the same quality and library of games as your primary console? For me, it’s worth it. But it could definitely be better.
I found mac, ipad and iphone to be far superior to the portal in all those categories. Less jitter, better picture quality, better connection and I`m more likely to bring one of those around with me. Having a one trick pony devi Ce like the portal is absolutely a nice thing, but for me it was not worth the price. Just connecting a dualsense via cable to my already owned ipad was more than close enough experience to the portal.
I want one so bad but I also just love collecting playstation stuff. I have all the playstations from 1 to 5. Ps vita, psp, even a playstation tv. I dont even really play video games, just love having em
lol, comparing a $200 device to devices that cost 3 to 6 times as much and then expecting the same features is kind of wild, especially considering this is a career (I assume from the three vids in my feed).
I think the Portal is fine enough as a product. But the biggest issue with it is that its just a really poor value. $200 is a ridiculous price for what they're selling. Sure, I get why some people went for it. Whether its as simple as a remote play option within PS hardware ecosystem, brand loyalty, maybe some level of ignorance over other options or intimidation over setting up those other options, etc. Heck, MANY people bought it simply out of pure FOMO. There are certainly no shortage of Sony (or any other massive brands) apologists who will fork over cash for anything with the logo printed on it. But all I can see is a terrible deal. Granted, they have added *some* value with ps plus streaming, but the package as a whole is offering very little compared to other options at its price point. I think Sony is extremely lucky that linux/android based handhelds are still quite niche, with the average consumer being totally unaware of just how much $200 can buy you elsewhere. You have companies that put out devices with specs that are decent enough to emulate up to PS2,GC/Wii, and even some Switch. All with an OLED display, quality buttons, and hall effect sticks. Along with a litany of other features for connectivity, storage, lighting, etc. Companies that barely have a fraction of Sony's buying power or manufacturing capabilities are offering similarly priced products that do everything the Portal does, along with way more more. What Sony treats as THE selling point, other companies are treating as an obvious inclusion. A sort of "Its a device with a screen and WiFi in 2024. Obviously it can use remote play" Sony could sell the Portal for probably half of what they currently do and it'd still sell for an alright profit. Sony manufactures displays, batteries, semiconductors, and virtually any other component used in modern electronics. Every one of the components in the Portal that would most contribute to cost are almost certainly made in house. In fact, I'd bet money that most, if not all, of the Sony made components used are just recycled from other products they already make. There is no way they can't offer much more for that price. Or just offer the same product for much less. Its absurd that they are getting absolutely obliterated by a bunch of tiny, comparatively insiginficant companies. But they know how loyal their more diehard fans are, and they know they can exploit that for easy money.
HEY!! just putting it out but if your using your phone or tablet and attach your dual sense controller via type c to type c I heard you get the haptic feedback back you'd be typically missing out on if you Bluetooth duel sense to your phone
I like my portal. Its admittedly dumb, and a niche use case. But as a dad who doesn't always have access to the tv I love it. I think its more convenient than my phone or even the steamdeck. Definitely not for everyone. Perfect for me!
Network engineer here, wanted to note some things:
What’s a good way to test optimizing channel width in your experience? I think I’m on auto 20/40/80Mhz is that the one?
It is embarrassing that the psportal only support wifi 5. Probably why DF found AT BEST +80ms input latency on top of system latency.
You would think they would have shipped it with wifi 6e or 6 at minimum.
Well said
Portal is the dad-station when the tv gets hogged.. for that market it works really well.
L take
Just got the 30th anniversary edition portal. I have remote played from outside my home with my steam deck Mac and iPad and the lag is noticeably better on the portal than any other device. At home I can comfortably play BO6 with hardly any lag.
Ur phone can do the same thing lol
A few things to note. You don’t need to hard wire it directly to the modem/router. I have my ps5 in the basement and my modem on the first floor of my house. I used a power line adapter (fairly cheap on Amazon maybe 30$). I tested it and it’s pretty much as good as hard wiring it in terms of speeds and in terms of experience I’ve had 0 to minimal lag or stutter etc. Mind you I don’t play for several hours a day though I don’t have time
For me, the portal is way better than playing on a phone using a separate controller.
I was just about to give up on it & sell it… I’m happy I didn’t
I still think a Steam Deck or ROG Ally are better.
Games sucks don’t expect much
JUST A NOTE : THE PS PLUS STREAMING JUST LIKE THE GAMEPASS STREAMING DOESN'T WORK IN SOME COUNTRIES, SO Y'ALL MIGHT CHECK IF IT'S AVAILABLE IN YOURS BEFORE GETTING EXCITED! 💬
it works as long as you have ps plus premium. obv it won't work with the deluxe variant
Not entirely true, I can use streaming even when my country is not supported in any way
@@Moli05 i meant if your country isn't supported it wouldn't work.
@@ThatDevilCookie I guess it depends on where you live, for me I'm from the middle east and I can't use streaming at all even from back in the day with ps now if you remember that.
I guess it depends on which account you are bought that ps premium from. My country is not listed as available, im just buying for portablity
@@AznMikey "Bigger screen" they said.
Are you referring to this setup/settings in the PS5 options so it will allow to be woken up both via your own home wifi AND if you want to play away from home maybe?
"Enter the PlayStation ecosystem"
Halloween was last month, Bob.
My experience with the portal has been amazing. All over the house, at work wifi, hot spot everything worked perfectly. Amazing device
Yeah until you try on an actual good device like steam deck or GCloud. Then you realize the the Portals streaming ability is kinda mid. Decent for sure, but not on par with other options.
@BeHempy I haven't tried the other devices but having a controller this comfortable on portal and ps5, streaming with no issues from literally everywhere and playing games I want beginning to end with seamless transition between both is amazing to me
So do you still have to turn on ur ps5?
I love my Portal. It’s a thing about having something that works well. Sure, you could spend more and get more, but why would you when you’re content with what you have?
@watskeburten completely agree
If buying this thing will break your bank then it’s probably not worth it but if you can afford the $200 bucks, it’s definitely worth it.
Retroid Pocket 5 is better at the same price.
Just started using Chiaki and it's baffling how a community tool works better than Sony's dedicated service.
@@VilasNil Hmm interesting I literally just got the newest version (chiaki-ng). Have you tried it recently?
Chiaki ,the newest one, is amazing I use it all the time and even used it during my holiday with hotel WiFi. I didn’t hardwire my ps5, have 1gbps fiber optics internet at home and the ps5 is only 2 meters away from the router.
I struggled setting Chiaki up on my Steam Deck for ages, and didn't figure it out until the day my PlayStation Portal arrived. 😅
I'd recommend it for anyone with a Steam Deck, especially the OLED ones, since the Portal doesn't do HDR.
Why do I only see blank pfp's saying it works fine?
@@thedualitysystembecause almost nobody cares or knows how to change TH-cam profile pics dummy.

I feel like there’s a way to get around the dam connectivity and lag issues on the portal if sony really wanted to
Hahaha better with the wii U? That thing was a huge pile of hot garbage. Worst mistake Nintendo ever made.
True, but it had a really short range so you couldn't really use it to play in bed a few rooms over.
@@nerfherder33 didn’t say it was a great console lol, I’m saying their streaming technology was pretty good for 2014. The portal is almost 10 years newer so duhhh.
@@jeremywp123 yeah I remember the annoying disconnect screen. But hey got the job done to an extent
Figured a Portal would be a good "might as well" but I'm stuck with Comcast where my upload is 5mb on a good day and I'm not gonna pay money to stream from their library.
the biggest problem with the portal is the marketing. They shouldve marked it as a controller with a screen rather than a portable gaming device
that 6:52 lag test is the attention to detail i FW
I would buy a Portal right now if they would just allow a direct-to-ps5 connection like how it worked on PS4 with the Vita. I used to play the PS4 all the time using my Vita when my girlfriend was watching something I didn't like and it worked great for me as long as I was within 20-ish feet of the PS4 with the Vita. And neither of those systems had better WiFi than the PS5 and Portal I'm sure
The connection isn't the source of the Portal's problems unfortunately
Beta right now too. I want the Vita store opened on the Portal so I can play my old games and buy some new ones. Won't happen, but I can dream.
I sit next to my router. WiFi keeps micro-dropping. It sucks.
I’m amazed it’s taken me this long to find a comment saying this - it’s insane to me that he hasn’t just hardwired it
I’d got a 4k 15.6” 60hz monitor for $119 on Amz. I just run a 10ft hdmi cable to my coffee table when the wife is watching shows.
I really wish the PlayStation portal acted like a Wii U when you’re under the same roof and it just connects to the PlayStation directly instead of trying to jump through Wi-Fi I feel like that would solve a lot of the latency problems
Playstation had Cloud Streaming before during the Vita era called "PS Now" which was discontinued fast due to the Vita not being popular enough
I wonder what will happen this time....
I would recommend being on a LAN connection constantly for your ps5 to have a solid connection to your portal.
I still think the portal is a largely silly product when you probably have options that are functionally free. I’ve begun to enjoy remote play a lot over the last year or two, and it has run perfectly fine on either my phone or laptop. I can’t think of a use case where a new $200 device would fit better than either of the other two options.
my WIIU Gamepad has a more solid connection than the portal.
Your dog in the surfshark promo is so funny.
Just wanted to let you know that we appreciate the effort you put in
I use in home streaming with my Steam Deck and it works very well!

The PS5's shitty AMD encoder might be a bigger issue than the Wifi.
Is your Portal connected to a 5GHz network? If your PS5 is actually hardwired (make sure that it really is using Ethernet instead of Wifi) and your Portal is connected to a 5GHz network with acceptable signal strength. Then it will definitely work great
I play it as remote play from work and it works perfectly and now with streaming it's even better
I work almost 50 miles away from my house... and haven't experienced a single issue streaming or remote play... fix your setup... it's not the portal at fault
To play your own games via cloud would be it. Whoever does that first wins

I just watched your original video yesterday so perfect timing!
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a video where this guy says one good thing about a PlayStation product lol
He's a Nintendo shill. Makes sense
2:08 get off my back, DAD! 😆

I love that the 380+ games on Xbox technically isn't including all the non game pass games that you own that can also be streamed.
That Megaman x music though is perfect. More of that please
Thankfully i've experienced no issues even when I visit other peoples homes several cities away from my console.
Ngl I really look forward to the sponsor ads 😂
The Playstation portal having wifi 5 (802.11AC that we've had for a decade) is easily it's largest questionable aspect. Why they would choose this for a streaming only device, I'll never know.
It works flawlessly now. At least for me. Bought it day one, extremely disapppointed with it, didnt touch it much. Since the last update been using it everyday for hours straight without much hassle. The only annoying thing that happens is it fails to connect to ps5 the first attempt but on the second attempt connects in a few seconds.
I forgot to say, i play it outside my home using hotspot from my phone. (Ps5 is connected to ethernet at home)
I wasn’t a fan of it in the beginning but I do enjoy it now. Wouldn’t recommend playing a competitive shooter but it’s good single player games.
Today I learned surf sharks have fur!
So I’m now playing Skyrim Anniversary edition for the ‘cough’ , very first time! And I finally think I have a use case for a PS portal.
I have Spectrum WiFi in NYC and cloud streaming on my PS Portal has been incredible. It feels like I’m playing the game natively. I was 20+ feet away from my router and in another room and it was still streaming perfectly
Good 5 minute Surfshark spot
Having a one trick pony devi
Ce like the portal is absolutely a nice thing, but for me it was not worth the price. Just connecting a dualsense via cable to my already owned ipad was more than close enough experience to the portal.
Why are we in a world were people dont have their consoles wired to their routers?
I’ve had no issues using the portal connected to my ps5 or streaming. No input lag or anything.
I want one so bad but I also just love collecting playstation stuff. I have all the playstations from 1 to 5. Ps vita, psp, even a playstation tv. I dont even really play video games, just love having em
It works so much better now, no more stuttering for me. 🎉
PlayStation portal is like a box of chocolate: you never know what you're gonna get
What’s about input lag if you play Dead Cells with a d-pad instead?
The "PSP" is the epitome of something designed by someone who never gamed on a real PSP
WHY ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT HENTAI IN AN AD!?!?!? LOOOOL 😂😂😂💔💔💔
That sound effect! XD
lol, comparing a $200 device to devices that cost 3 to 6 times as much and then expecting the same features is kind of wild, especially considering this is a career (I assume from the three vids in my feed).
Obviously it can use remote play"
Sony could sell the Portal for probably half of what they currently do and it'd still sell for an alright profit.
Well the cloud stream g clearly states it’s in beta, thus is not the final product so I would obviously expect it to get better at full launch
HEY!! just putting it out but if your using your phone or tablet and attach your dual sense controller via type c to type c I heard you get the haptic feedback back you'd be typically missing out on if you Bluetooth duel sense to your phone
I like my portal. Its admittedly dumb, and a niche use case. But as a dad who doesn't always have access to the tv I love it. I think its more convenient than my phone or even the steamdeck. Definitely not for everyone. Perfect for me!
