The noise you're describing after the conversion to a single mass flywheel (SMF) is "gearbox rattling".
While your dual mass flywheel (DMF) was quite heavy and had big springs incorporated, the inertia kept the flywheel in motion and the spring took the impact of each ignition.
Now that the SMF is light it slows down in between each ignition and there are no springs to cushion the impact of each ignition.
So the gear wheels are making more forcefully contact while at low RPM.
In order to reduce the amount of gearbox rattling you could increase the idle RPM or use thicker gearbox oil, but all in all it's the price to pay for a faster revving engine.

Smart move replacing everything. That car has come so far since you got it. I like the way you’re approaching the build by replacing all the wear items and making sure everything is upgraded and done right.

Couple options to tame the chatter. #1. Change your trans fluid to Redline gear oil (1 quart 75w-140NS and the rest redline D4). This dramatically decreases the noise. #2. Get your ECU tuned so your idle is 1000rpm. You can test this by just revving the car to 1000rpm with the clutch out and see the difference.
I have the same car, same clutch kit, and did both of the above. Didn’t make it go away, but 100% liveable now.

The rattle you are hearing now is the non dual mass flywheel. Now u don't have all that weight to absorb the vibration so u get that chatter. That's not just the BMW. That's for all cars with that type of setup. U will be fine.

I believe DKM makes a single mass iron flywheel as opposed to steel if you wish to further reduce chatter (I went with this for my e46 M3).. it's only a couple lbs lighter than the stock dual mass.. could also look into combining with a twin disc clutch which seems to have design integrations that help further reduce chatter issues.. not to mention the massive increase in torque capacity :)

  • @DonBMW

That sounds is to be expected with a SMF. I installed a GripForce Stage 2 Clutch kit w SMF and Spring Loaded clutch disk in my E36. Get only the faintest bit of rattle. Highly recommend this kit.

You are it, great skills. I need to change mines too, just yesterday I can not shift into reverse, number 1 also is hard to shift to. So my question to you, why you think the noise is coming? Is it the performance model the reason. Also what was the total price for all the parts you replace. Thanks
