You guys are awesome! I've been a professional mechanic for ten years and I have never used anti-seize on seal's I always use a little grease, assembly lube or whatever fluid or oil suits the application. I'm always happy to learn new tricks of the trade though thanks.
Many mechanics should learn how to work by watching this video. Very good and very professional. Molti meccanici dovrebbero imparare come si lavora vedendo questo video. Molto bravo e molto professionale.
Hi, Enjoyed your video it's amazing to watch how a clutch and flywheel is disassembled and how its put back together and the effort applied. I'm getting my e39 clutch & flywheel replaced and just was searching up videos of how its done and I liked how you showed exactly how it is done and everything explained perfectly. I just subscribed thankyou.
The fork clutch pivot ball which is made of plastic is very important to replace guys, they either brake or melt, you can go with the dealers plastic or aftermarket brass type which is better. Is less then 13dlls. Thank you!
Graham S - We could not reply directly to your comment as it was entered via Google - You can use a specific floor transmission jack. These are available from Harbor Freight and others. They have a large saddle and tie-down straps or chains similar to the high-lift jack we used. Other than this, a common floor jack can be made to work by using ratchet straps around the transmission and the jack's saddle. this is not nearly as secure as a transmission jack, but with care, can work quite well.
Loved this video. It really helped me with my clutch replacement. My clutch kit, from Advanced Auto, did not include the same elements prescribed in the video. Unfortunately, I can't wait for the parts because of my new job, I have to have this wrapped up by tomorrow. I do want to get one of the UUC lightweight flywheels in the future, so I may redo this job again in 25,000 miles (My new job puts a lot of miles on my car). Anyway, thank you.
Great job but on a e39 525 the starter may get seized on the gearbox locating pin. You can use a wedge to remove but should clean up the pin and hole with paper and lube
Bit of a tough DIY job without jack hoist. Just can't imagine working under the car on my back. I might rent a service booth for the job next time. Anyway, very instructional video.
Excellent video. It had all the detail I needed to replace my clutch. However, I do wonder if the engine needs any support from the top once all the transmission supports were removed. It didn't appear any engine support was necessary. Thanks
We can't be sure about your specific case, without driving the car, knowing the vehicle and parts details, etc, but your issue may be due to the unsprung clutch disc, which may be transmitting more engine vibrations.
Try bleeding the clutch hydraulics (slave cylinder). Also consider changing the fluid to the Red Line MTL or D4 (Dexron-III) fluid. Click below for Red Line fluids: www.bavauto.com/se1.asp?dept_id=5174
It's also not a bad idea to spray some brake cleaner inside the transmission and clean out any dust and debris left over from the old clutch while you have it out of the car. Some people like to actually paint the outside of the transmission when doing a job like this. Honestly that's just a personal preference and mostly something that people do if they're restoring cars to make it look nice.
You didn't mention what model you have. However, most BMW models do have a 30mm output flange nut. Some models have a lock-ring around the nut. Have you looked closely to see if you have the lock ring still inplace? Is the nut as much as 6mm larger than the 30mm socket (as noted in the prior reply)?
As always great video and you've made it seem so easy. Any chance of doing the front steering links and how to balance the center drag link to drop arm? Many thanks.
Including all of the set-up for the video and photos, re-takes, etc (in other words, the full video production process), we had about 12 hours into the job. It's certainly viable to do the job at home in two full days. Having the lift and air tools, we could have done this all in one work day if we were not producing a DIY.
What is the benefit of using the lightweight flywheel compared to the dual mass flywheel? I've read that there can be more vibration in neutral and lower RPMs, and makes it a difficult situation for street use.
Done mine one year ago, took me 2 days... :) I use a Sach reinforced mecanism and a standard disc (no springs). I was having a vibration at the pedal for a long time after having installed this new clutch, then today the the clutch release bearing has broken... Do you have an idea of what can gave me vibration at the pedal ? Frequency is synchronized with the engine rpm, gear engaged or not leave the same feeling... Ideas ?
great guide.. need help bavauto.. followed your guide to the dot, successfully installed a new clutch and pressure plate by Sachs, reinstalled the transmission, start the engine and all good no noise etc but clutch is not engaging??? put it in 1st or reverse gear but nothing?? i can even release the clutch and engine wont die.. also while the car is running, i can shift to all the 5 gears and reverse even if im not stepping on the clutch.. any advice?
Great video once again, I enjoy watching them! I have a quick question when you have a minute: Replaced the clutch, pressure plate (to a self-adjusting) and flywheel (to a single mass) in my 01 330i and upon completion, after bleeding, I found that the clutch pedal didn't go to the floor, it stopped an inch before. Also noticed the clutch did not engage until almost to top of the travel on the pedal. I've searched on forums with no success, any ideas? Thanks
Very professional way explained in video, thank you. I have a question, my BMW 320d from 2001 is 5.gear model i bought from Swiss second hand. The clutch pedal point is bit to high and if i don't sleep it slowly it might vibrate or car jump in the back, sometimes after i drive several km clutch pedal falls in real driving point, fells fine changing gears while accelerating, but it wan't stay longer then about 30.sec, i have open mask to check for pedals, it's all clear no leaks from cylinders at all and all things are in place. After i saw your excellent video you made, you mention self adjusting clutch...it it possible my car have this kind of self adjusting clutch and is unable to adjust or is it cylinders got air on it. Underneath my car is all the plastic and heat shields intact, it seem never been in service for more than oil change, so can you tell me what could be the problem with my clutch pedal please?
I will definitely NOT be trying to do this job myself on my gravel driveway with axle stands, instead I’m going to be saving up for someone else, someone with all the right tools, to do it for me. Also, will be fitting an OEM LUK dual mass flywheel and clutch when the piggy bank is full.
I have an 1998 528i, it was 36mm. I put light grease on the splines, but it had some kind of glue on it when I removed it. Does the output flange nut require thread locker? I ordered $256 worth of transmission stuff from you guys and I got it two days sooner than expected. Thanks!
Have you ever had an issue after changing the clutch not goin in to any gears ? I just replace the clutch on. 325i. And now it doesn’t want to go in any gears 😩
Thanks for the video. How does the price of this replacement kit compare with the OEM dual mass flywheel? Also - I was told that the DMF was intended to absorb some torque and that a solid flywheel could make gear change rough. Have you had any experience with ford Mondeos?
I need to do the rear main seal on an 04 325xi,guess I'll do the clutch also as long as i have it apart, are their any additional things to remove aside from the front driveshaft? Does the transfer case come out with the trans? Thanks for the video, should prove to be a much watched reference point.
I replaced my clutch disk and all the other things, exept flywheel, everything seems okay, but when i start the car, my drivers seat vibrates and i hear lauder noise inside cabin, nothing changes when i press all in clutch.
When using the uuc lightweight flywheel, do you also have to put some sort of an extension rod on the slave cylinder? Is the trow-out bearing different or the uuc flywheel is the same off set as the OEM dual-mass flywheel? Thank you
BavarianAuto Thank you for the fast response. I have a 2000 328ci and Im replacing the clutch because it felt as if the clutch was always partially engaged. After removing the transmission I found the uuc flywheel with the e34 m5 pressure plate. This particular pressure plate was indeed a SACHS and the flywheels and clutch disk were burned. (Someone didnt put it in with the proper tool.) I ordered the oem Luk clutch kit prior to me finding out about the uuc flywheel. So my question finally is: can a use the uuc flywheel along with the oem self adjusting luk clutch and have proper release and engagement? If not do you sell an extension rod for the slave cylinder? What do you recommend? Thank you in advance
NewGenZ The stock clutch kit will not work with the UUC flywheel. You need the M5 style clutch to properly fit and work on the UUC flywheel. We do offer the UUC clutch replacement kit. Just give us a call at 800-535-2002.
Nice video sir, just wondering if you could give me an idea on how complex of a job it is to do a clutch on a BMW super charged mini, a friend had his clutch done and the cost of the job was staggering to say the least. parts probably cost more in Australia, but , wow, it was a lot of money.
A front wheel drive application is usually a bit more involved for clutch replacement as you have to disconnect the driveline and support the engine ..... or just remove the whole front subframe and driveline from under the car.
What lubrication compounds are you using for the rear main seals as well the tranny seals? Just normal antiseize? Also I was reading through the Bentley manual and it mentions having to torque the output flange but in two stages; also provided are stage 1 and 2 torque specs. What exactly does that mean? Torque to the first spec, back off and torque to the final spec?
just watched video and im looking forward to do this job myself. but on a e90. 06 325xi to be exact. but im looking for this kit that you used. i know im not get the light weight flywheel. i looked on uuc website and seen only the Valeo DMF flywheel conversion kit. but not all the other goodies that u have in the video seals bushings, bolts, and exhaust gaskets and what ever else im missing... im no pro but no amateur either. any guidance will be greatly appreciated
I just installed a Valeo single mass flywheel clutch kit including a new throwout bearing in my BMW. Though now when stopped,in neutral and clutch out, I hear throwout bearing noise. Sounds like a quiet diesel. Any idea the cause? Some forums say it's hit or miss. .
if it sounds like a diesel when the car idles it's probably not the throwout bearing. it's the clutch chatter it's a pretty normal thing when converting from a dual mass to single mass setup.
Best BMW mechanic I ever seen! Great job.
Thanks for the video. As an owner of a used M3, your channel contain a wealth of repair instructions for the DIY home mechanic.
You guys are awesome! I've been a professional mechanic for ten years and I have never used anti-seize on seal's I always use a little grease, assembly lube or whatever fluid or oil suits the application. I'm always happy to learn new tricks of the trade though thanks.
The main issue is to use some type of lube on the seal lip ... as you have been doing.
This was a masterful presentation.
Hi
best auto channel so far. Greetings from Germany
+Deltanova93 - Greetings, as well. Thanks for the good words.
Many mechanics should learn how to work by watching this video. Very good and very professional.
Molti meccanici dovrebbero imparare come si lavora vedendo questo video. Molto bravo e molto professionale.
Thanks again for another really well done DIY for all to access around the world. Much appreciated!
Hi
Terrific presentation. Precise, thorough and to the point without all the extra chatter. Wish you guys covered Mercedes work as well. Thanks.
Very detailed.... I like it. Also, the "Why" you do what you do is also very helpful that other videos don't explain. Thanks for the video.
Thanks, Uriel!
You are doing fantastic work! Your level of perfection is amazing!
Very good informational video. I was glued to the video. Thank you.
Yes, you could certainly use this DIY as a guide on the E46 M3.
great video, professional at work,he was performing like actor in theater
Thanks Sean!
this guy knows what he's doing
Another excellent video by Gordy. I'm missing the Bavauto team...

This shined light on the seals and stuff I think I would have over looked. Parts ordered, holding up reassembly, but worth it I'd say.
this is very professional!
Very professional work

nice video well done thinking of working on my friends 330i dosent look to bad of a job. thanks for posting.
Hi
Thanks a lot for this great work.
Excellent video!
Not even sure why I watched this. But great video none the less.
Great and very helpfull video, greatings from Serbia.
Thanks Otto ! You are the best !

Thanks for doing this. Should do some stuff on SMG like pump replacement for SMG II. Or maybe an SMG troubleshooting guide.
Very relaxed and detailed. Thanks
Great work! Love to see an oil pan gasket replacement e92 chassis
Great job but on a e39 525 the starter may get seized on the gearbox locating pin. You can use a wedge to remove but should clean up the pin and hole with paper and lube
Epic topic now revealed! Thank you guys! What about quite sophisticated procedure of replacing oil pan gasket on e39?
good job friend. congratulations
You guys are brilliant thanks for the video.
You're welcome, Danny. And, Thank YOU!
Das ist sehr gut. Super. Just like in the movie.
Bit of a tough DIY job without jack hoist. Just can't imagine working under the car on my back. I might rent a service booth for the job next time.
Anyway, very instructional video.
Well, of all the transmissions and clutches that Otto has done over the years ..... this is the first one done with the luxury of a lift!.
awesome video! very informative and useful
great video the only thing was missing was the torque specs
Thanks for a great video!
Thank you so much for the video upload
Thanks guys! I'd like to see install a set of rear shocks on a Z4 2004.
Excellent video. It had all the detail I needed to replace my clutch. However, I do wonder if the engine needs any support from the top once all the transmission supports were removed. It didn't appear any engine support was necessary. Thanks
Nice one South Africa

Try bleeding the clutch hydraulics (slave cylinder). Also consider changing the fluid to the Red Line MTL or D4 (Dexron-III) fluid. Click below for Red Line fluids:

1. you don grease the lip seal ring on the inside
2. to much anti sieze compound( coopper grease)
3. the rest great job thumb up
very educational

Great job
I just got a e39 so I'll be doing this but I'm thinking, new gear oil since we have the gearbox out??
could you please show us how to do the electronic job when converting auto transmission to manual transmission ??? please !!!
Fantastic video! Is there a special reason as to why you used copper grease to lubricate the transmission seals?
Done mine one year ago, took me 2 days... :)

That flywheel is pretty damn sexy - shame to cover it up with a clutch/gearbox!

I replaced my clutch disk and all the other things, exept flywheel, everything seems okay, but when i start the car, my drivers seat vibrates and i hear lauder noise inside cabin, nothing changes when i press all in clutch.
What yall think of switching to a Single Mass Flywheel in a 2006 320d? They are much cheaper SMF kits on ebay, including clutch and bearings.
When using the uuc lightweight flywheel, do you also have to put some sort of an extension rod on the slave cylinder? Is the trow-out bearing different or the uuc flywheel is the same off set as the OEM dual-mass flywheel?

The full UUC flywheel and matching clutch and throw-out bearing put the release arm in the stock position, for the stock slave cylinder and push rod.

Hi Otto, how big is the gear puller you use on the transmission output flange? looks like maybe 4 inches?
How many hours did you spend for that replacing?
Do you need to use loctite for the flywheel bolts to the crank?
If the original bolts are being used, they should have blue thread-locker applied. New bolts have thread-lock applied already.
Good day ... I have a question: is there any adjustments needed after replacement of the clutch.
When you say "a special 30mm socket" what do you mean?
What size is the nut on the output flange? I bought a 30mm and it's too small.

How many hours does it take to install a clutch and dual mass flywheel kit?
You continually say to torque to specification but never provide those specifications. Where does one find such specifications?
BMW Service Manual a.k.a. Bentley Manual.
@@TheultimateDIYmachine So trash my Chilton and buy a Bentley?
Yes, it is dual-mass.
