I'm not the most knowledgeable about the lore, yet I believe Sauron was a celestial entity in a similar vein to Gandalf. He was a shape-shifter though, taking the form of an elf most commonly.
This was an awful show. I’m not a Tolkien shill but I had to stop watching during the third episode. The writing wasn’t good. The characters were cardboard. The dialogue was atrocious. Then they sprinkled in Critical race theory by suggesting the elves had to police the white men because of the potential for evil they have in them from their ancestors. Bull$#!t.
Isn't it odd how that glorious "modern audience" never actually watches anything made for them? One might start to suspect that they do not even exist.
Racism, patriotism, and jingoism were 100% themes in Lord of the Rings though. Gimli and Legolas didn't get along at first, solely because of the animosity between Elves and Dwarves; and Elrond doesn't trust the human members of the Fellowship because of the established fact that Sauron's evil corrupts Men much faster than the other races, while Hobbits are typically the slowest to convert. The creation of Orcs is following the Übermensch theory, since they are stronger, faster, and have greater stamina - they lose intellect and morality, but those are traits that Sauron disregards as unimportant, plus a dumber army is easier to keep under control. Gondor refused to send aid to Rohan because of their own self-interest, and the heroes had to work hard to get the rival kingdoms into uniting.
