He took a joke from the 1930's expanded it and pulled the entire thing out of his ass on the fly. People talk about brave comics, well to do something like that, is really freaking brave.
I always imagined the driver being like "a moth walks into a pediatrist office and the Pediatrist ask 'why did you come to see me?' and the moth says 'the light was on'."
He was totally pulling from Russian literature in this joke. The fact that his driver told him a 20 second joke, and when Connan need to fill eight minutes, and Norm was like I got you watch this…. Is the stuff of legends.
Was a comedian? I feel like there is a different designation for him, and is hybrid with the term genius… not just a comedic genius.. maybe a comedic philosopher?? Hahaha. The great ones always die young don’t they.
Colin Quinn had told him that joke years prior. He also read a lot of Russian literature. Hence, the most fearless and brilliant comedian of all time pulled this absolute gem out of his ass. LEGEND!
This joke brings an image to mind of a turtle - that's human nature (or moth nature in this case) - and a broken clock. The clock keeps yapping on about its troubles while the calm turtle gently pulls it along on the stream.
He said he was going to do one last Joke during commercial break. Conan asked him to do like 10 minutes more instead So he took a super basic joke and Normed the hell out of it!
I have read a lot of comments, and different strokes for different folks. If it’s not funny to you then it’s not funny. Yes this is an old joke from the 30’s, and yes the joke is just meh by today’s standards. The genius comes in when Norm takes the set up for an old joke, and turns that into the punch line. On occasion Norm would try and reverse the old set up then punchline standard, and go with the old punchline set up joke. He also occasionally when with the strange the set up and the punch line are the exact same thing shake up.
The joke is that he convinces you to pay attention and spend mental energy following his long rambling set-up, because you think there will be a massive pay-off at the end. Then he provides a lame, kids-joke punchline. You realize you have been tricked, and that triggers you to laugh.
It is brilliant because Norm took the set up of and old joke, and made that the punch line. He was a genius. And he did that with other old 30’s jokes. He was kinda low key an early troller, and I love him for it.
Some comedians say funny things
Some say things funny.
Norm had the rare ability of doing both 😂
thanks...norm is a funny guy who tells stories and blasts people (snl)...

I mean is it really THAT brave? It's a taped show where they cut 70% of what they film for air.
It's not a live show. Not that brave.
To be brave, you must have fear to overcome. Norm wasn't scared of a joke.
It's a bad joke told by a brilliant comedian.
I always imagined the driver being like "a moth walks into a pediatrist office and the Pediatrist ask 'why did you come to see me?' and the moth says 'the light was on'."
He said they asked him if he had another segment in him, he said he had one joke and asked how long he needed to make it. NORM IS KING
Norm truly loved reading Russian epics, apparently! Makes sense, when you hear this freestyle

A 20 sec joke turned into a masterpiece
RIP to one of the greatest comedians to ever live

the moth joke is older than colin quinn
@@dariohenriquez7773 that Quinn told him..nobody ever said he made it up
That driver is pretty funny.
It's the stupid jokes that catch you off guard and end up so funny.
Always
Ah, that guy; Ah, that guy: Nah, wait till you here me do it. 😂
This joke brings an image to mind of a turtle - that's human nature (or moth nature in this case) - and a broken clock. The clock keeps yapping on about its troubles while the calm turtle gently pulls it along on the stream.
We want more norm!!
I hope that the driver is hired as a writer for the show lol
Norm ----- Teachers are the real heroes.
No video, audio only and you will die laughing.
Brutal and hilarious
Great reaction!
He said he was going to do one last Joke during commercial break. Conan asked him to do like 10 minutes more instead
So he took a super basic joke and Normed the hell out of it!
A good joke is in the telling. Norm Macdonald was a master.
Norm was a true Canadian icon.
He was no Jacques De Gatineau
I love the Norm MacDonald frog joke. That one is the best.
With a Norm joke it's the journey, not the punchline.
I love seeing his amusement at wasting your time after he delivers a corny punchline.
Letterman and conan interviews are all great
Did you know that the moth's name was Dimitri Ivinalititavitch?
Gregory Illilivitch
It's a funny joke, at its core
Im bummed you guys are ending the channel the week the site decides to recommend you. And its a genius joke, the way its told.
Don't really know how the algorithm works fs but hope you enjoyed the video
The dude on the left laughs like the guy in the laugh chain reaction video. You know the one.
Dostoyevsky and a 3 year old’s joke 😂 Only Norm 😂❤
Damn, the cold! 3:50
You gotta react to the Dirty Johnny joke he did on the Howard Stern show

as a deeply closeted gay man, his disdain for hot sauce amuses me
Is he borrowing from crime and punishment
Yes. He loved russian literature
Now do the Swedish German joke 😅
Norm said he loved Russia for it's bleakness and obviously it's literature.

Greggarroo
It's a mediocre joke told really well.
