It isn't meant to be cool or tough. You've missed the whole point of the song, to David Grohl this song was about the potential of people. Yet to anyone this could be about losing a close loved one like a father. To many this is now about the band's drummer who passed away last year, and is shown in this video, Taylor Hawkins. If you can't understand that, then maybe music just isn't for you.
