    I used to see a woman on the bus fairly regularly who was probably suffering from coprolalia. She would yell out racial and other slurs when someone got on the bus from the group that slur is against. Her coping mechanism was to wear a huge wide hat with a black scarf over it, sit in the far back and look at her feet and just try not to see anyone. I saw her almost get in trouble a few times. What a horrible way to live.

    I have Tourette's, thankfully not coprolalia. Tic loops do happen, even just with echolalia and palilalia. I get tics in clusters, whistling, "brrrrr", "woah!" and tongue clicking, and if I'm really ticcy I'll just get in a loop retriggering myself over and over.

      Just out of curiosity (and feel free to tell me to google it if the question is inappropriate), how do you trigger a tic? Is it a personal thing, or is it something similar to other people’s? Or is it when you’re feeling strong emotions? (Sad, anxious, or even happy…) I’m mostly curious about how the girl in the post’s roommate could get her to say a specific word and not just trigger any random tic. Again, feel free to let me know if the question is inappropriate and I’ll just look it up myself, or just don’t reply at all. (I promise I’m not too lazy to google, it’s just that with these kinds of things the internet is absolutely filled with misinformation and I value hearing peoples personal experiences and opinions ❤)

    • @milothespylo

      @clarasnotlikely Anything can trigger a tic. My tics get worse when I'm cold, or when I'm stressed. Also other people can make movements that remind my brain of a specific tic, and trigger it. Same with vocal tics. Talking or thinking about a specific tic can make that tic happen. Pretty much anything can trigger tics, depends on the person.

      @@clarasnotlikely I have a friend with tics so this is not a personal experience. We had a couple of bad friends that would trigger specific tics in him. The thing with this version of it is from my observation kind of saying the wrong thing in the worst possible moment (like he sees an animal and then tics and says "animalf*cker"). So I imagine you can trigger specific tics by repeating them yourself or something that is similar/in relation to it. That's how our 'friends' used to do it at least. Usually I think tics act up when stressed and in other uncomfortable situations.

    • @Tortle4444
      @Tortle4444 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +25

      @clarasnotlikely I don't know if this is how it works for all people with tourettes, but some of my tics are triggered a lot by sharp noises (clapping, loud clicking, and sometimes beats in songs if they are very prominent). I have tics where I will clap or slap myself and those are especially triggered by sharp noises. If someone mimics my tics, that often triggers them to happen. Also they seem worse if I am cold.

    Dude, the roommate that wouldn't pay back the money is financially delusional. She would benefit immensely from a financial advisor--not that she can afford one. But hair is easily $60, nails are probably another $60, and lashes usually run $150 minimum! And that's all before tips! Can't afford to pay your friend back, but you can pamper yourself so excessively? YIKES!

    • @TheSilverInfinity
      @TheSilverInfinity 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      definitely yikes. I don't really agree with the OP grilling her roommate so much for doing all those lavish things though... being on the receiving side of (specifically unsolicited!) financial advice, is the absolute worst. OP should have just skipped straight to the ultimatum "you need to pay me or i need to get a new roommate". How the roommate manages her finances (even if it is terribly) is her own problem, not OPs.

      & do ❄️ & go out every weekend is extremely expensive. If she stopped getting doordash, her hair, nails,and lashes done & doing drugs and drinking all the time she would have plenty of money to pay her bills 🫠😒

    • @Suztvfan
      @Suztvfan 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      @@TheSilverInfinity Well it kind of became the OPs problem since she might have gotten evicted if they didn't pay the rent. But that is savings from the OP. Something they don't have evry time they need to pay rent and they shouldn't have to.
      If the roommate got in trouble with other payments and not something also involving OP, I would agree with you. But rent was a bill that includes both of them not paying that makes her bad financial decisions OPs problem.

      Even just losing control over part of yourself. Be it a part of your body doing something on its own is scary enough, but speech is a whole other deal. It's your brain, it's your ability to communicate with others, and humans are social creatures - severing your bonds to your kin is devastating. I can't imagine what living with coprolalia, or any form of Tourette, is like.
      So for someone to voluntarily trigger that loss of control over yourself for laughs... man, tales have been told of fairies and other monsters doing that kind of shit and forcing people to say stuff to put them in danger. It's a well established fear of mankind to not only lose control, but being forced to lie by words. Horrifying behavior.

I have these weird intrusive thought like that inside my head like an earworm segment of asong and I’m constantly terrified that I’ll find myself in a situation where I lapse in my control of my mouth (I’m neurodivergent and sometimes have a vocal stim work gods help me) because it’s almost always the meanest word I can think of, when I was little the word was “bitch” and now it’s racial slurs that make me want to cry and I get physically sick to my stomach because I never ever ever want to make someone feel as terrible as hearing that would. Mood stabilizers help but the more stressed I am the worse it gets and unfortunately it makes me stressed so it can become a cycle and it makes me hate myself even more than I already do.

If you look at someone else ticking and are empathetic to them, you should be telling yourself the same things. My daughter has Tourette’s with coprolalia as well and honestly, this terrifies me that someone might do this to her. Someone purposefully triggering her tics in a way that might hurt her has never even occurred to me. I’m terrified for the guy in the story.
    Also- Daniel- your “Tourette’s ‘I have a gun’ loop” wouldn’t happen with Tourette’s. It’s very rare that a tic will be “socially appropriate” in a way that the tic makes sense, and you tend to tic the same handful of things over and over. So ticking “I have a gun” 25 times is likely, ticking 5 variations: “I have a gun”, “no seriously, I do”, “no really, I do have a gun” etc are extremely unlikely. This is what I’ve been taught through support groups, docs, and personal research.
    My kiddo has a particularly bad case (worse than anyone her docs/therapists have seen) and even with her case, she doesn’t do these things. The only time I’ve seen things like that happen has been the “fakers” on tiktok and stuff. Unfortunately.

My friend was terrible at managing her money and i had to resist from offering to help her cover things (such as rent) because i KNEW she would never pay me back and she'd start to rely on me to pay for her all the time. She never asked me to lend her money which i am grateful for because i never had to tell her no to her face. But believe me watching her floundering to afford living because she didn't have the fortitude to hold down a job for more than a couple months was exhausting and I'm glad we're no longer friends so i don't have to spend energy worrying about her every day.

    Hi, person with Tourette's here (though if I'm being honest much more minor than what was described in the first post).
    I thought I'd give my take on the question regarding "loops" in Tourette's. While I could imagine something like that happening from my experience with my own tics and those others around me have had, I think the reasoning wouldn't be "the Tourette's correcting your genuine statement," but rather the fact that it keeps your brain thinking about it. Generally, among other things, a common trigger for tics in many people is the active mentioning of the Tourette's in the first place. With Coprolalia, I feel trying to correct yourself could lead to the urge to repeat it staying on your mind for longer.
    TLDR, there could definitely be cases of that kind of loop, but most often it'd probably not occur in that kind of way.
    If anyone with greater personal experience with Coprolalia or more severe Tourette's can fact check this, or share their experience with that sort of repetition through utterance, I'd be glad to edit this comment or at least hear the feedback.
    I should probably get back to watching the video instead of typing a Senior Thesis in the comments lol :)

      @maxithink5527 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      I have coprolalia, and you're right. Even just the fact that I know I'll say something bad makes me think about it more. Trying to respond to it to correct it has a tendency to make it repeat, even moreso if someone else adresses it. What she experiences in the first story is very relatable, in a way. I have never said the n-word but when I have a tic others find funny they often adress it and repeat it which makes it worse.

    If not OCD, really heavy periods can require a lot of toilet paper usage. Especially when you wake up in the morning, the cleanup can be like a literal crime scene. However, for the person in the post it seems like OCD is most likely, but if that's the case it should definitely be addressed.

    The one (1) defense I'll make for rent girl is that "get a delivery job" doesn't necessarily work. Last year my wife and I were in tight financial times and we tried to do grubhub, Amazon flex, Uber eats, etc. and all of them came back with a wait list and a message that there weren't opportunities for drivers. The nature of gig work: the companies gut the local economy and then remove jobs to "cut expenses" so that there are huge gaps in available employment. That doesn't let the lady off the hook for spending on cosmetics and clubbing, but it is more complicated than "get a part time job"

We only moved in together because we were being forced out of our former living situation. Found out after moving in that she has massive anger / violence / trauma / etc issues and that she was super manipulative + abusive towards me (only accepted that it was abusive after telling friends + family what she was doing). We broke up + she's still living with me for now + we're not on speaking terms, but thankfully she's agreed to move out in a month + I found a new roommate + the landlord is writing up a lease for the new roommate as we speak.

She came to the driver's side window to ask if we're ok and then said she's going to leave. Thankfully another friend had the presence of mind to stop her and demand her insurance. She tried to say there was no damage when there was a clear indent of the outline of her license plate on the bumper which she tried to show wasn't her by moving her car closer and saying it didn't line up. What she and the puncher in the post don't seem to understand is that things that are hit don't always look the way we expect. Just trying to make excuses for their sh!tty actions

    Second story: I had a similar roommate once. I took her in while I was pregnant with my first child because her husband cheated on her with her other best friend (we were all in a friend group). We didnt charge her rent but she would complain about being "poor" while packages arrived every day and she had a new car in our driveway (she needed a car for work but she refused to buy used). We ended up needing to move because we couldn't keep up with our finances thanks to her. We were supporting a new child and a grown woman-child and it just got to be too much. She ended up moving in with my sister after me. They charged her $300 in rent and for some reason she couldn't figure out how to pay it. She even asked my sister if she could pay her $150 every two weeks because $300 was too big of a hit on her finances. She ended up going to Disney World during this time even though she magically couldn't pay rent for months prior. 🙄 She also got a dog while living there but would be gone 2-3 days at a time and expected my sister to care for it. My sister absolutely did but it obviously wasn't her responsibility. My sister eventually kicked her to the curb thankfully and our friendship was non-existent after all of this.

I never really thought about how the two could be correlated, but thinking about it now it makes a lot of sense. 20:39 I also do have to wash my hands about 4 times, it’s gotten much better since a couple years ago I would spend 20+ minutes hunched over the sink, scrubbing them until they bled because I felt so filthy (edited to add the second time stamp)

    Tourette's sucks. I wear my self hatred on my sleeve. I tic "I hate me/I should die" all the time repeatedly.

    My new pet peeve this year is people wildly misusing "intrusive thoughts" and I'm so glad we didn't go down that spiral today. Thank you, Daniel!

    Damn I'm gonna need an update on the hanging meat story... That's so cryptic.

    I was so worried the title was satire I had to watch it to make sure. You don’t know how much I appreciate that it was genuine ❤ thank you

    Just as I thought "Hmm.. more than 20 minutes and no surprise microphone yet, wonder what's-" he stopped and did the bit with the "SURPRISE MICROPHONE!"

    Thank you for mentioning what a problem intrusive thoughts can be because that's something I deal with and it can be really problematic. I have intrusive thoughts paired with anxiety, depression, and OCD, and that means I actually often obsess about my intrusive thoughts. I used to cope with this by drinking...and now I am a recovering alcoholic because that became yet another problem. I've taken medication in the past, but have dealt with very negative side effects as a result, and I'm actually meeting with a doctor to explore different medication options tomorrow. Sometimes I have a really hard time coping. I feel really miserable and lonely a lot.
    (PS - in case you're wondering, no, I am not one of those 25-toilet-paper-rolls-OCD people. I have no idea what's going on with that one lol)
