Oh my gosh, I think I found my companion! What a beautiful breed...........Thank you for this video and this kind woman and this delightful animal...........
All 4 of my Giants had/have natural ears and cropped tails. I've been so thankful and happy the tails were done. What she said about tails sweeping EVERYTHING off of end tables, coffee tables, night stands is a fact. Their butts are close to 30 inches tall. The remaining short, thick tail makes a great handle to grab in an emergency to stop the dog. They are done when the pups are so young their eyes are barely open. The Vet simply pinches between the tiny bones to separate them and the skin is trimmed and sealed with surgical glue. The Vet will explain how at that age the sensation in the tail is so low they barely even move. Do not believe everything activists yell about, they just need a cause to belong to something and if they weren't yelling about cropping a tail they'd be yelling at people trying to stop human abortions.
I’ve owned five highly active working giants with natural ears and tails over the years. Tails sweeping stuff off of tables is a very, very small problem. It happens but not very often. This argument is just an excuse for croping tails. If it is such a huge problem owners of all other large breeds with tails would have the same issues but they don’t. Don’t forget that the tail is a very important part of a dogs balance system. Yes, they can compensate for some of the lack of a tail, but not completely. Just as you as a human can compensate for the loss of a finger to a certain degree.
Mattias Pettersson I respect your opinion and as a fellow Giant parent, I can tell you that if I believed anything would cause undue pain I wouldn’t let it happen. Watching all my big boys levels of agility never pointed to any balance issues. They live (lived) on an acreage 5 acres big so they have room to really open up the jets! Also in all the videos online I’ve never seen anything detrimental to docking a tail. I think for working dogs it’s an advantage because whatever or whomever they are protecting someone from, the Giants adversary can’t get ahold of the tail.
Look up “ear hematomas” and “broken tails” if you think cropping ears is purely cosmetic today. This breed is so strong that they can significantly injure themselves with very little effort.
@@14goldmedals The pups are forced to compensate for the lack of a tail but it alters their movement patterns and so on. You can't get around the fact that the tail is important both for balance and movement as well as for communication. You can try but anyone with knowledge in the fields of physiology and/or communication will tell you that you're wrong. And for the protection argument: Why do all GSD:s and Malinois working as police dogs have their tails intact? If this was a valid argument in any way those breeds would be docked too and they aren't. These are just arguments that we heard over and over again back in the 90's when we stopped docking tails. Some breeders stopped breeding Giants because of the ban. Good riddance. If the love of the breed isn't deepaer than that the breed is better off without them.
@@hannahm.8288 Ear hematomas occur in all breeds with hanging ears. In my five giants cases one of them had one ear hematoma, and she lived and worked hard for 8 years. She also had problems with what we call "water tail". A few times in her life about 2/3 of her tail went limp after swimming (this lady could swim and play in wather for hours if given the chance). A problem that went away after a few days. This happens to all breeds with tails now and then. When it comes to broken tails one of my males had this "problem". He broke it once. His tail was very thin and whip shaped and he came from one of the first litters with natural tails born in Sweden. Thus the breeder had no idea what the tails would look like. After a few generations of breeding this relatively small problem was more or less gone. Back in the early 90's I briefly worked at a animal hospital. We saw cases of ear hematoma a few times (never in Giants) and we saw a few broken tails. The broken tails was almost always seen in short haired hunting breeds like the German breed Vosteh but thanks to good breeding I think that the problem is as good as gone by now. As with all other charachteristics it's a question of breeding the right dogs if you want to fix a problem like broken tails and done right it can be fixed pretty quickly.

She’s been an excellent dog. This dog is so protective of my husband and myself it’s unbelievable, but she does it with no aggression and a lot of class! Love this dog! Good luck!!
@@bigbro9395 my giant doesn't chew on anything other than his food / bully sticks. No destructive chewing whatsoever, other than his toys, which he has only really destroyed one out of oh, I'd say ten stuffed animals. You can direct puppy chewing behavior to "their toys" as opposed to household items. It's just training. I'd also add, a tired dog is not a destructive dog, as they don't have pent up nervous energy. You gotta exercise them, they're not a lap dog. They need a physical outlet. I'd recommend a large yard and hour long walks in the evenings, daily at minimum.
In my experience, you can teach a dog a signal and a word or one or the other to jump up - perhaps by tapping your collarbones and saying " hugs" or a silly word like "scritchy•scratchy" or hold your hands out to them - for some loving hugs or pets or a good neck and ear scruffing. That way they learn that they don't get any extra good attention if they try to do it themselves on their own decision and impulse. Don't give in now cuz you'll teach bad habits! Don't reinforce the bad habit if it's their decision only give them love and hugs or scritchy•scratchy if it is your command that they jump up on you. Likewise, the experience I had when my Jack Russell simply would not learn to stop barking I taught her and all of my dog's hush and I knew that and she would do it for a second and then she would turn right around and just bark up a storm at the slightest little thing... so, when I could get her to hush for that second give her a treat that failed also after a few moments. So then, I set it up again to treat her when she was quiet with the command hush and then I encouraged her to bark her fool that off and I gave her treat after treat telling her speak speak and then all of a sudden I threw in a hush and gave her a treat before she would start up again. And it struck her finally. It was like magic!
I was thinking of getting this breed since I live alone in an apartment and wanted some protection when I am walking in the evening. Does anyone have any advice?
Hey, my advice to you is maybe try getting a little bit of a lazy breed, for that, look into some mastiff breeds. If you can provide at least 2-4 hours of vigirous exercise then I think your dog will manage in an apartment MAYBE. Remember, Giant Schnauzers can workout and exercise the whole day and need their owners with them to stay as they are prone to separation anxiety. So just make sure your dog is happy, only then they will do what you want them to do and will also live a long and happy life. Also, you cannot solely rely on your dog for protection, I suggest buying a weapon and learning some basic fighting skills to truly ensure your safety. I hope this helps!
I sit around all day reading as I’m an investor and my giant is with me all day .. we go and run 5-10k every two days or so and she is happy, smart, obedient, sociable, very vocal when barking .. like people asking silly things … she wantS to chop their heads, I keep her on a leash and read her intentions when I’m outside as she chases cats and small dogs to kill but yeah … it’s the perfect dog and as the lady says it’s all true, no health problems at all
They never used Doberman matter fact the giant schnauzer is way older then the Dobermans. The only thing they used for was Bouvier‘s ,Great Danes German shorthair pointer and German spitz
I wish I could attach the most recent genetics cladogram here. It puts doberman and giant schnauzer together as most closely related. Google . the-evolutionary-map-or-cladogram-of-161-domestic-dog-breeds.jpg
Google sucks if you take the goatee and the beard of the giant schnauzer it looks like a great Dane but just with a dock tail not a Doberman And not to mention the breed is very old older than the Doberman

wwe have 2 from Sylvia. best investments ever, no regrets and highly recommend her and her kennel. the staff there is excellent and knows what they are doing.
They are cropped for cosmetical reasons. Once upon a time they started cropping them on the Standard Schnauzers because the rats that the dogs were hunting bit them with infected wounds as a result. At least this is what has been said. Now cropping is just a (dumb) tradition. It’s a messy process with high risks of infection. A friend of mine worked at a kennel in Spain 10-20 years ago. After seeing the process up close she stopped buying dogs with cropped ears.
Look up “ear hematomas” and “broken tails” if you think cropping ears is purely cosmetic today. This breed is so strong that they can significantly injure themselves with very little effort.
It's banned in most civilised countries. Most of mainland Europe, the UK and Ireland. Defenders come up with flimsy arguments but they do it because they think it looks cool. It actually gives pedigree dog breeders a bad name.

So then, I set it up again to treat her when she was quiet with the command hush and then I encouraged her to bark her fool that off and I gave her treat after treat telling her speak speak and then all of a sudden I threw in a hush and gave her a treat before she would start up again. And it struck her finally. It was like magic!
I bought 2 giants from Skansen in the 90s. Excellent protection and energy 💯
Am I ever glad you pointed out that piece of straw on the dog's face. I was looking at it and trying to figure out exactly what it was

This woman is exceptional in her knowledge of the breed and dogs in general. However, the interviewer seems ill prepared.
I am wanting a silver or black with silver giant... and all roads seem to lead me to the Skansen kennel.
amazingly wise lady!
Why did I think her last name was skansen. I have a giant from her and plan on getting a mini.
Cool.
Where is the lama footage?
This isn't the dog for you. Unless you are very active and run or bike with your dog.. An apartment is too small for this kind of dog.
@@tyrannotherium7873 If you look up the aforementioned graphic you will find that it is from a peer-reviewed scientific paper. I don't know your credentials but one would be more apt to agree with you were sources provided.
As someone who has bred them for 70 years and is also an AKC judge, I'd trust the information Sylvia provided over any "internet" claims on who thought what.
Looking into getting a giant schnauzer feel like I hit the jackpot on this video
How much do they go for? A per quality(friend and guard), not for show
i love Sylvia , what a strong lovely Lady , one day i will buy a Giant Shnauzer from her.
Just realized my pups pedigree paper has Skansen in its history! My pups got Skansen blood!!
Can you do the bouviers des Flandres

Damn Sylvia is a millionaire with her 100 acre purchase. What an amazing investment. $200000 became $7000000.
How often do you brush their teeth?
I don't want utube showing up on my Facebook. TOO MANY. How to delete?
Please do a video on living with a German Shepherd -- working line specifically! Thanks.
Hey yeah! Surprisingly this has never come up!
My mini hates water x
I had a giant schnauzer name the El Negro loco Valdez and he would defend you against the devil himself no question asked he would bark at people in their car driving by cops that werr up to no good undercover cops he new the difference between an undercover cop and a regular cop but he knew they were up to no good when they drove by my house how he knew I have no idea oh my dog my giant schnauzer he was the strongest dog I have ever had stronger than my Rottweiler my pitbulls and my Belgium Malinois so my respects to a giant schnauzer love with kids very very very protective best guard dog ever better than giant Chihuahua as a matter of fact I have a appointment tomorrow at skansen Kennels to pick up my show quality female pup another one the appointment is at 11:30 a.m.
How do I contact Silvia because I’m looking giant Schnauzer puppy to by
Great video!! Just an honest question. As an immigrant to this amazing country, what do you think about immigrants coming here without proper entry?
Can they be taken to a dog park and play with other dogs for exercise?
She’s increíble lady but why she needed to mentioned Castro 😩.
wwe have 2 from Sylvia. best investments ever, no regrets and highly recommend her and her kennel. the staff there is excellent and knows what they are doing.
That's not true unfortunately. As in the case with my Skansons puppy incedent.
Questions too broad hard for her to know what he is specifically asking her about
Lovely lady 😊
Let’s be real AKC champions really don’t mean anything these days!! All for cosmetic not their health and working abilities 🎯🎯
Why r their ears cut in Uk it’s rare to see a schnauzer or a Doberman with cut ears...
Is Sylvia Swedish?
Jag tror det
Yes
I wished it was illegal in the US as well to crop tails and ears. A schnauzer is born beautiful, no need to modify it.
Interesting. How do you feel about human circumcision? Just curious...
@@davidphillips1845 Only retards do that (except when there is a medical issue).
