    DUBBED 'a wolf in sheep's clothing', the Giant Schnauzer is a breed of dog that might look docile but hides an aggressively protective nature. Leedor Borlant of Protection Dogs Worldwide has been training protection dogs for over a decade and says the Giant Schnauzer is one of the hardest breeds to train, making them cost from £30,000 upwards. Leedor's associate trainer Matt owns a Giant Schnauzer himself: "The reason why I got this breed in the first place was because of my asthma - a lot of the dogs used to set the asthma off and I found that the Giant Schnauzer didn't". Matt has returned to Protection Dogs Worldwide for a refresher session with his Giant Schnauzer, Achilles: "He's back today just to see where he is after a period of time out - is it still going to perform after two years of doing nothing?" Matt said.

      There is a difference between a Trained guard dog who gets tousand hours of training and can understand a lot of commands and knows when to stop and when it’s time to attack. Of course your dogs will protect your home and they always will cuz they are DOGS they always protect their family and home . It is all about HOW your dog is protecting his home.

    Between my parents and myself I've had 5 giants. I've gotta say, that dog in the video nails the type, super engaged, annoyingly energetic and VERY GOOD BOYS. One thing I'll say for anyone looking at them is that while ours have always been 100% with family and in public places (off leash big crowds in NYC even), I don't let not-family play rough with kids near them and they absolutely will respond to perceived aggression. You need to show them things like people hitting punching bags or skateboards jumping in a planned way and in advance if you plan to bring them around that kind of thing in the future. They are cattle driver/guard dogs at heart as well, so they'll enforce "simon says" rules on anyone they can if you don't establish boundaries, and even if you do, that might happen if you leave the room and they aren't trust level 100 with the person. These aren't unique GS traits or anything, but that breed seems to have a very very high chance of that personality showing up.

    • @Kris_797
      @Kris_797 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That sounds very cool. I had 3 minature Schnauzers and I still have one. Minature Schanuzers make really good dogs beacuse they're very friendly, well, mine is. My neighbour has a Giant Schanuzer, more specificlly two and they are really good canine companions but i still like the minature Schnauzer more. Both of the breeds I mentioned are friendly.

    • @OnkyoGrady
      @OnkyoGrady 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah the stuff I'm warning about is more along the lines of don't get on the ground and growl at my kids in front of the dog that doesn't know you. This is probably great general dog advice of course 😂, but that actually happened to us. The difference I'm pointing out is, my poodles would body block you or bark if alarmed, maybe jump around, but the GS might/did drag you to the other side of the living room. No crazy aggresion past that mind you, friendly before and after with the person. Cattle dogs...

      I have Kangal Dogs i could relate to what you said about showing aggression of any kind around their presence, this Trait you are speaking are known to The Shephard Dogs of Western Asia or middle east and Centrali Asian Dogs. These are Livestock Guardian Dog mentality at its finest. These Asian Shephards are Ancient and have been Around for more than 5 thousand years but that being said what i am interested about The GS is the Health part, Kangals and Alabai with good owners they reach 16 years tops.

    There’s one at the dog park I go to and and it’s an absolutely amazing dog, very smart. It pretty much referees all the playing and when a dog gets too rough it will push it out of the pack that are playing and hold it off. My puppy was being attacked by this small dog constantly and it just came over and pushed it away from my puppy. And it just held it at bay for a while until it calmed down, I was very amazed so I’m looking these dogs up.

    My dad had 2 of them as a boy growing up on a farm during the Depression in Canada. The dogs were no nonsense and stakes were high as the family couldn't afford any theft. I had a GS growing up as a kid.
    My Mum was a single Mum with 2 kids and she moved into a house right next to a pub, so I think she got the GS for a little extra protection and boy could she protect. Excellent guard dog, very powerful, strong and protective. We always felt safe even when we had drunks loitering around our front door knowing we had 100 pounds of dog ready if anyone overstepped the mark.
    She was an absolute sweetheart with me and my bro too.
    Il always remember when some kids who were bullying me followed me home after school one day and I ran in the house and got my dog out on the lead - they ran an absolute mile afterwards.
    I think having a GS put me on the road to always making sure I had dogs that were not only a loving part of the family but could protect me and my family if needed.
    I've moved onto having more powerful breeds - Great Dane and Mastiff/Staffie X but from purely a traditional guarding role the GS was probably the best dog I've had. Although my Mastiff/Staffie X is a lot more of an intuitive protector.

    We got one of these 4 legged wonders when I was still a child, apparently the owner wanted to use him as a herding dog but he was too big and strong so he gave him away to us. It is Hungary we are talking about and the guy kinda looked at him like a big Puli (usually mop-looking herding dog here) and he did look the part. From 2 meters he looked like a puli from about 1 meter :)
    The thing is he was completely trained, no idea how the original owner pulled it off but he was a gentleman, even showing his neck when it was time to leash him etc.
    He was on a imd-long chain because we had no fences at the time but it was more like he let us keep him on chain. He got agitated like... 3 times in his life? 2 out of 3 he was on the end of the chain and he snapped it without as much as slowing down :) We were under no illusion, thick chains meant nothing to him but he only ever released himself those times.
    He was/is family and I still tear up thinking he is no longer with us.
    I remember him pulling me on a sleigh :) Well, a grown man could ride such a big boy so yea... I do remember him actually dragging our car without much effort. Damn I miss you.

    I noticed that the “Fine Line Family K-9” dogs are much better protection dogs. In my opinion (no hate). I saw that FLFK-9 could turn on and off the dogs immediately. Their dogs could also “gauged” and stay by their side without being forced/pulled and in this video the dog was being pulled back/held back or else it would attack. FLFK-9 had a different word to tell them to attack. That’s just something I noticed and wanted to share. I guess that’s the difference money buys. 🤷🏼‍♀️

      A proper protection dog can be “turned on and off” if you can’t then something went wrong. Plus when you’re trying to hype a dog up to bite you’ll hold them back and then release them. You can also do a bark and hold. Many different things you can do but in general they will all do the same things if trained properly

    • @0116Lori
      @0116Lori ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, they don't have the reputation that the media has pushed on some of the others. I originally wanted to have a Doberman but after a lot of research decided against it. Number one issue I have with the Dobies as a breed in general is the horrible health of the breed. It's so sad because they are beautiful dogs. Also, my home owners insurance would go up. Now I have my eyes set on the Giant Schnauzer or the Beauceron. Leaning more towards the Schnauzer because of less hair flying around the house, (off of the dog that is).

Also bark a lot and in many differnt voices hehe

    So annoying to see people commenting about the price and clearly not knowing the amount of training and time it takes to get an actual work standard dog that you can use in police or security work. Working line GS are very hard to train compared to GSD or Malinois. That is the reason why GS is not so popular among officers now days. Intensity and guard instincts are much stronger towards territory on this breed than on shepherd breeds which causes the difficulty of training the dog to know it's boundaries. It will protect very well, but it takes long to train for it to know when to protect as it is quite trigger happy to tell others that the street you walk is your turf. And yes, this ability does not exist nearly as much on show or pet bloodlines. My working line dog from a long lineage of police, security and army job cost only 1-2k as a puppy, but if I were to turn the training years to regular day jobs hourly pay, it would sum up to a quite a lot.
