He could have made his league debut then but the club president overruled it due to fears of nepotism. He'd go on to make around a hundred professional appearances over a 7 year spell, scoring a professional hattrick for Belenenses and becoming club captain of Comércio e Indústria. He decided that he didn't have the requisite pace and power to compete at higher levels and elected to become a coach instead. He wasn't just an academic - he was very much born into football and his experiences playing entirely out of the spotlight undoubtedly had an impact on him as a manager.

He sealed it then added the big one. Immediately took Chelsea from nearly men to top dogs, competing with Fergie & Wenger, totally blew them away. A perfect fit for Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund or Marseille. Still brilliant, serial winner but 02-12 guaranteed winner. Actually Jose Mourinho played a little bit as a midfielder, then went to become a scouter and an assistant for his father, who was a football manager. So there was some foundation. But, yes, he had determination to be more than an average coach in his country.
Mourinho did play football - I believe he was part of Os Belenenses youth academy but then didn’t make it into the first teams. I’m sure that’s what Sir Alex meant.
