People tend to forget about this one, the Florida Government censoring 2 Live Crew's album As Nasty as They Wanna Be for being too obscene. It was about free speech and government overreach.
Homer: I didn't know you were a Beatles fan. Flanders: Of course I am. They were bigger than Jesus. But, your boy went Yoko and broke up my collection. 😂 Okay, got carried away with that scene from the Simpsons. Yes, they included that theory about Yoko Ono breaking up the group, despite the contrary.
And a couple years later he tried to do the same to Beck at the AMA's. Then went on talking about how the Academy don't respect art while talking about Beyonce's album that had 53 writers and 19 producers, while Beck wrote each song on his winning album himself, produced it himself, played all 16 music instruments featured on it himself, and recorded it himself. I don't know, but I think that is more artistic than having a combined 72 people working on an album of 10 songs.
The thing about Ozzy and the bat...I heard that Ozzy originally thought the bat was rubber, fake. So he comedically bit the head off it, and only THEN did he discover it was in fact, real
Kanye west jumping on the stage during Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech was the worst. I felt bad for Taylor Swift, of course, but I also felt bad for Beyoncé. Because how are you gonna drag her into your mess? That was totally uncalled for and all it proved was that Kanye West was extremely unhinged and should probably seek mental health help somewhere.
Take her having been accepted as informing you; not to speak down on her art per se, but that started even before her - she was the most popular to do it
I guess im too old but you forgot Guns n' Roses' Slash and Duff McKagan showing up drunk to the AMAs and Slash letting a very famous f-word fly on live prinetime tv!
The P.M.R.C hearings in 1985 should've been included. Led by Tipper Gore, the P.M.R.C wanted more parental control in music and determine if certain songs are too violent or sexual for youths to listen. It blurred the lines between obscenity and free speech. This led to the "Parental Advisory" labels we have on certain albums today.
I'm still pissed off with Fred Durst and the rest of Limp Bizkit because I was at that festival. It was bad enough that the preceding two and a half days were uncomfortably hot and humid, we weren't allowed to bring coolers full of beverages, and by the time the riot started, the vendors who were still operating were selling water for $8... for about 3 oz (or however much those little Dixie cups would hold). The mood of the crowd was already in a dark place, and the band's choice to play "Break Stuff" lit an already really short fuse that ignited a powderkeg that was one of the wildest nights I can remember.
Regarding payola: The money didn't stop flowing. It just took a more convoluted path. Instead of an envelope of cash, the record rep would take you out to a nice dinner where there are no prices on the menu (if you have to ask, you can't afford it), VIP seats to an NBA game, and unlimited dances at a strip club. Allegedly. (source...I used to work in radio)
Nice of watchmojo to include Chicago Radio legend Dick Biondi in the Payola scandal clip. I once met him in 1988 while interning at Magic 104,the oldies station where he was on the air.
11:12 Did anyone knew that the black actor from Madonna's "Like A Prayer" played David Ruffin and made the iconic line,"Ain't Nobody Come To See You, Otis!"
One thing I found kind of interesting Heard more about it in terms of the Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake incident was that he suffered no repercussions. Even though he exposed her breast to the world, his career was able to continue. Jim Jackson on the other hand was kind of blacklisted and blamed, even though she really didn’t even do anything wrong. why did all the blame go on her?

Just a point every musician who appeared on Australian music show Countdown lip synced their performance but to find out Milli Vanilli did on their albums was not good
When John Lennon was murdered when his shooter said it was partially because Lennon said the Beatles were more important than Christ shows how religion can be fanatical. I’m religious but these people give religion a bad name
Metallica was right about napster especially Lars because smaller musicans are barely making money. And Metal music has been on life support since streaming services, Taylor Swift and mumble rap took over in popularity.
Well, he's got a good sense of business. James said that. He stopped Napster, but metal died anyway. It was inevitable. I was die hard metal. I'm old now. I still listen to my metal and I have never downloaded a Taylor Swift song. Now, concert tickets is where musicians stab you. It was inevitable. I was furious at a Megadeth concert when I saw front rows full of Chads who never heard any song other than A Tout Le Monde. In the 90s, you know the wealthy little brats wouldn't dare come to a metal concert.
Britney Spears Marrying Kevin Federline From 2004-2006 no diss to K-Fed he sounds like a good father but he left a pregnant Shar Jackson star of UPN's Moesha (1996-2001) for Britney Spears that just stupid and that reality TV Show that made about them that got the axe shouldn't gotten made The Cleveland Show (2009-2013) Parody Federline Jones voiced by Jamie Kennedy Is more relevant than him and the best part the people who actually hurt Britney like Justin, Jaime Lynn, her dad they getting all kinds of shit right now Kevin lucky he got the kid but did they get him too just asking

Okay, I feel that there has been some false advertising here. This was advertised with a photo from Madonna's Like A Prayer video. So far, I've reached #12 of 20, and not a single cultural moment, not a single brilliant, controversial song, album, or music video. A controversial album release controversial for its release doesn't count. What a gyp.
The problem is that what Natalie Mains said wasn't out of any level of sincerity, but pandering to an audience. Now they are just "The Chicks", and one of their recent "hits", _Gaslighter_ is an outright confession. It had nothing to do with her "being right", no matter how things look now. The Who Concert incident was so infamous, the series *_WKRP in Cincinnati_* called out the entire idea of "festival seating".. but it was brought back for no justifiable reason. "Black Metal", to be honest, have validated the idea that Rock and Roll is Satanic at its core. There are other validations, such as John Lennon's statements and Madonna's entire latter half of her career.... The "Super Bowl" incident was ENTIRELY PLANNED. It was inspired by a performance that Tina Turner and Mick Jagger did years before where he pulled off her skirt. The fact no one admits that, pretending like that didn't happen, is gaslighting. Phil Spector's murder of Lana Clarkson was all about a man who refused to accept his loss of relevance and ability to control others. Lastly, the entire "file sharing thing" is all about greedy people mad that they are not able to buy things they don't deserve.

Oasis reunion tickets fiasco
Paul's 1966 death and Billy takin over
Janet Jackson also took the brunt of all the ridicule and vitriol after the super bowl incident. Totally unjust.
Agreed
And over blown you never really saw anything
Then why she do it in the first place
@paulcarpenter7844 right, so it was on purpose? It wasn't her hand derp
That is kind of interesting though. Justin Timberlake was the one that exposed her breast and yet nothing happened to him.
The chicks were unfairly maligned.
That should not have been their most controversial moment.
I was thinking Great White fire would have been #1
The Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson incident was blown out of proportion. 🎉

@Lucidspeeds I have seen some things that he said that was pretty bad .

Choosing the black metal church burnings over the multiple murders by those guys is fucking wild.
I was just about to say the same thing.
Kanye upstaging Taylor Swift was the moment I knew he was past the point of no return.

The Station nightclub fire should have been on this list
It's too crazy
Axl Rose could have been a hero but he decided to be an ass.

For 17: The Symbol was known as Love Symbol. Love Symbol #2 is the Pantone name for the shade of Purple they created in Prince’s honor.
The Milli Vanilli name shall forever be stained with the knowledge that they lip synced all of their songs.
