    When an instrument makes a sound, it doesn't create a "pure" sound wave. Instead, it makes the fundamental sound wave, which defines the pitch of the note, plus a bunch of higher frequencies which add to the "texture" or timbre of an instrument's sound. These texture-adding frequencies are the harmonics, and they're usually proportional in some way to the fundamental frequency, kinda like a "natural chord" which defines the way how an instrument sounds. When it comes to lossy compression, some algorithms decide which harmonics of which instruments are fine to remove without making any difference in terms of psychoacoustics. mp3 is a special codec because part of its compression algorithm is brute forcing this process and just removing anything above ~17khz. Generally, the instruments that suffer from this type of compression are the instruments that are mostly harmonics with weak fundamentals, like hi-hat cymbals.
    What, I feel, the harmonic compensation does is attempt to restore these harmonics that were eliminated in the lossy file compression process.

    LDAC uses different bit rate depending on connection quality and bit rate changed automatically depending on connection quality. To fixed a bit rate for LDAC it is required to change the setting, which is available in developer options in the settings menu of Android device and also user need to find the developer options in the settings menu to know wheater that device support LDAC or not.

    • @VaioletteWestover
      @VaioletteWestover 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah people always are so weird about China but they don't realize almost everything in their lives were luxury items that they couldn't afford before China began making them.
      Huge flat screen TVs used to cost literally 10-20000 dollars and now they cost like 500.
      Chinese hifi seem to also be increasing thr variety and overall quality of sound equipment too.
      After I bought this my HD800S could leave my house since this BTR5 illegally sounds, if I'm honest, nearly indistinguishable from the official 2000 dollar dac amp combo from sennheiser made exclusively for the 800S. It hurts me to say that.
      Even the HD8XX, I can just go into the app and add 8 db to the 2000hz and alleviate most of the "issues" with it.
      This device probably makes most other competitors cry and rage. Haha

    I was watching the review of the M15 that comes after this, and I heard the re-review of this being the best and previous to the M15 and being so cheap, and it perfectly fits the application I have in mind for it. I literally just bought it without thinking of a reason not to.
    I'm a truck driver and I often run an aux cable from my phone or an old FiiO M3K to drive the stereo. I prefer the UI from the phone, but not having that connected to the head unit physically, but I also don't want to pair my phone to the radio because the radio itself is garbage. (It restarts randomly every few hours, which would kill the Bluetooth connection and it won't pair again unless I fiddle with a bunch of shit and I don't want to do that in an 80,000 truck on the freeway.)
    This allows me to have the great sound quality (or at least the best I'll get out of the speakers on the truck radio), while having the selected application and UI that I choose. Not having the phone be physically tethered to device in the dashboard, or having janky bluetooth. And all at a decent price. 😁👍
    This should fit my needs very well.

    I've been owning this fro a one week, and can confirm it's an great device for the money. Also I'd like to mention a few points regarding the USB-DAC mode.
    Have tried it in both Mac OS and Ubuntu 19.10. On Mac it works perfectly and starts playing as soon as you plug the device into my MacBook usb port. Meanwhile there is an issue in Ubuntu. The OS recognizes the BTR5, but it seems that the BTR5 does not understand that it's connected via USB and still searching for available bluetooth device to pair with. A few plug in - plug out help in this case and suddenly the BTR5 starts playing the stream from Ubuntu ) Hopefully, guys from Fiio will fix it someday )

    you know its good when zeos starts a review with "...F***!*
    also btw with your question about harmonic:
    Harmonics are the frequencies that appear above (higher than) the fundamental frequency of a waveform. This might not make sense so let me try to break it down.
    Every noise you hear is made up of and can be broken down into a whole bunch of sine waves at different volumes and different frequencies. These are organised into harmonics (and a few other terms that i am not 100 percent familiar with).
    The first harmonic is also known as the fundamental and our brain interprets that as the pitch of the sound.
    The second harmonic appears in an interval that is twice the value of the first frequency. E.g. If you take a 10hz frequency that has a second harmonic, the second harmonic will be 20hz (and at a lower volume).
    The third harmonic would appear at 1.5 times the value of the first frequency and fourth at 1.25 times (every subsequent harmonic appears in that pattern.)
    In regards to distortion, when you crank up distortion on a sine wave it increases the volume of the harmonics until the point where you end up with a square wave.
    I hope that provides you with enough information if you have any questions please ask.

    I bought this device recently. It's slick and sounds great, but the BT reception is very weak; in LDAC mode I pretty much have to keep the phone within a meter or two, even walking around in my living room will make it stutter (and somehow not autoswitch to other codecs, maybe I need to enable that somewhere?). Also the battery life when running it in balanced mode, LDAC and 1:1 clock is absolutely abysmal. I think I got barely 3 hours out of it that way, on low-gain IEMs. It does work great as a dongle and even sounds a notch better still that way, I suppose that's how I'll have to use it if I want to listen full quality for more than an hour or two. Something to be aware of depending on your needs. I'm glad I got the leather case with it because it is indeed a crazy fingerprint magnet and the case is excellent.
    Random tip for those wanting more EQ options: Neutron player as well as others can have your phone do all the parametric EQ'ing you want and spare the already short batterylife of the BTR5.

    Edit: Got one, and first impression is awful. Starfields on stock 3.5mm cable turned into a muddy, sibilant, V-shaped disaster. Decided to bought a TRN T2 2.5mm balanced cable so I can actually use the BTR5 to it's fullest potential, and by god it does sound way better with the balanced jack. Those starfields now has bigger soundstage and details, with almost all negatives from stock cable removed. • @d0nj03
      @d0nj03 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah, AAC (MP4 Audio, the successor to the MP3) was designed primarily for quality/size, not for wireless transmission from low-CPU devices, so it's better than any BT codec running at the same bitrate and also better than other codecs running at even higher bitrates (runs at 250kbps, beats LDAC at its low setting of 330, beats aptX at 354). Only competition I've heard about so far for quality/size is Opus, but that one is barely used on computers, let alone via BT (so far).

You can force it to a single one of those, but at the higher values it will be more likely to stutter if you get farther away or have too much wireless interference. And after you disconnect the BT receiver it will forget your manual setting and go back to Best Effort, unless in this case the FiiO app helps it remember(?).

Not a big deal as it didn’t really change output wattage much if any. That said, I t’s also now available with a Lightning OTG adapter cable for wired mobile DAC use with apple devices, which is nice for those of us still using iOS even though Apple abandoned audio fidelity years ago.
