- I ranked every cave from pikmin 2 to find out which cave is objectively the best!!

Sleeping is actually super useful! it can kind of act like the go here function in pikmin 3, taking your captain back to the ship whilst you can perform tasks with the other one! + it has a ton of uses in speedrunning!
Yeah but it feels a little clunky and unsatisfying to use at least for me and I regularly forget I have it, and in Pikmin 2 speed isn't really necessary unless you're speed running, so for the majority of players it doesn't really change anything, but I admit it is useful in speedrunning
Also, you can get certain items early which helps speed up your gameplay overall. For instance, you can get for resistance and bitter sprays both on day 3, if you play your cards right.
Toooooo be fair, the intended use of the nap sack wasn't for sequence breaking but you're very right about its usage being super critical for speed running

I had never thought of it like that. That is actually really smart, had no idea about that.
So, the 5-man napsack does something... REALLY obscure.
If you fall alseep, your captain will become resistant to being crushed.
This also destroys the projectiles from larva beetles.
I have NO idea why it does this, but it can be somewhat useful.
i think the game might treat sleeping captains as just a standard carriable item, like a treasure or a corpse
The snagret hole sublevel 2 makes sense as a garden area, you entered at the bottom of the tree, climb up to the birdhouse, then jump through a hole in it and fall outside
Still feels a little weird, and the distance you fall into sublevel one from the outside compared to how little you have to climb in order to get into the treehouse doesn't really line up
@@Aqbrhinoyou put this as the third worst cave, a tedious sublevel where you climb for two minutes before waiting 5 minutes for a pikmin to carry a feather all the way down

Theres technically one thing that's unique about the dream den; it is the only cave in the entire game to have 0 candypop buds. It makes it a lot more important to conserve your pikmin and let as few die as possible.
I never noticed that before, but that definitely makes that cave more challenging for the final cave
I always liked the shower room. There's something weird and whimsical about its atmosphere and I like the use of all hazards without it getting a hard on for trap count.
I remember that in that cave as a kid i lost a captain and coulnd't kill the final boss. With just one captain i had no clue that you were supposed to have two to beat it and i was just too stubborn to leave and come back later. Long story short i essentially softlocked myself and tried to kill the boss for a few days eventually giving up and dropping the gaming, only coming back to it 4-5 years later starting from scratch and beating it fully
One underrated thing about the Dream Den is that purple pikmin are not useful for the final boss. Purples are inherently broken, so this acts like a balancing factor.

I really like the frontier cavern because it feels like a true test for everything you have learned so far. It starts out simple, but slowly introduces harder and harder enemies throughout. It’s one of the only caves that feels like it gets harder the further you progress. It’s a great cave because you probably have just finished most of the awakening wood and perplexing pool. so this cave is introducing the second half of the game, where stuff really goes down.
I just like it for all the Christmas themed treasures
The Stellar Orb is actually a very useful upgrade, it makes caves way easier for me personally, especially the Submerged Castle.

Early game Pikmin 2 caves: time to kill a bulborb and get some purples!
Lategame pikmin 2 caves: The victim is placed in a metal wall room with a sandpaper conveyor belt floor. The floor moves at a slow pace and never stops. The victim would have to keep moving to stop from being scraped. They would tire and eventually pass out, and would scrape against the floor. This would wake them up and make them stop themselves crawl to stop themselves from bleeding out. They would eventually pass out again and not wake up.

I recently replayed pikmin 2 and in the submerged castle I speedrun the full cave with all the treasures because I was scared as hell and the water wraith did not spawn I was sad and relieved at the same time.

About the five man napsack, it's actually great thanks to the 2 players, it's like the "go here" on pikmin 3, but only for the base (because pikmin can pick you and move you at the onion

Hole of Heroes is number 3 because it has Bulbmin. Only 3rd because it only has 1 Bulbmin squad. Meanwhile Frontier Cavern is 2nd because it has 2 Bulbmin Squads. And Submerged Castle is 1st, because it has 4 squads of bulbmin. :D

Submerged cadtle was like my 7th cave of pikmin 2. Pre louie abandonment. Submerged castle killed 120 pikmin. Screw the suicide dweevils and water wraith.

The thing i like about Frontier Cavern is that instead of cheap traps every 5 seconds, it is just enemies that are tough on their own and feel fair.

Sleeping does serve a purpose... It's a quick way of getting one of your captains back to the onion/research pod... Like a very rudimentary version of "go here"
The rush boots can be used in the submerged castle what I did was lure the big enemy away with a captain without Pikmin while I have one captain with Pikmin get the treasures.
I remember getting stuck for 15 MINUTES on Sublevel 4 because the Waterwraith kept circling this 1 treasure and whenever I did get a chance to move the treasure, the Waterwraith would come RIGHT BACK and I'd have to hide and wait until it was on the other side of the map again.
I took sadistic pleasure in hunting him down in the Bully Den.
I like snagret hole. I just like fighting snagrets. Also, damn it! They removed the weed leaf.

Its funny because people seem to remember pikmin 2 as hard. In my opinion, it wasnt much harder than the 4th game that just came out, the bosses just had a lot of health. More health doesnt mean harder when the objective is just running around throwing pikmin the whole time. Pikmin is just a fun game

Submerged Castle won because it was the only cave that actually had thought put into it (which thankfully changed in the fourth game which has a pretty strong cave lineup)

@Aqbrhino This doesn't really help answer the question but I feel like Below-Grade Discotheque is an excellent example of the difference between Pikmin 2 caves and Pikmin 4 caves, like my goodness sublevels 3 and 4 in that cave are really cool (not to mention being topped off with one of the best bosses in the game)

I love how mean pikmin 2’s caves can be sometimes. Its oddly funny seeing the absolute absurdity of all the crap this stupid game throws at you lol! That being said, I really wish all the caves were themed like glutton’s kitchen, submerged castle, shower room, and frontier cavern (thats the holiday one right?) it would make them less of a boring slog to push through

- The hole of beasts is the first proper cave in the game and the white flower garden is the second
- the first boss in Pikmin is the puffstool, not the snagret
The earliest boss is the puffstool as you can’t access the snagret ‘properly’ without blues.
The hole of beasts is the first as you can’t access the white flower garden without a lot of purples to lower a bag. 200 limit and at the point in the game you only have 10.
Sry if I said they were the first, but I'm pretty sure I said the Snagret is ONE of the first bosses and that the white flower garden is ONE of the first caves and not that they were the first boss and cave
I found the armored cannon beetle in Forest of Hope first because I only went to the forest navel to get blues first and it’s also entirely possible to fight Beady Long Legs first so I don’t think a first boss can be decided for Pikmin 1
Since the Puffstool doesn't have a boss music, does it really count as a boss? It's a unique enemy, but I think that's as far as the game recognizes it, which is pretty fascinating...
pikmin 4 caves are soooo much better, but the pikmin 2 caves are just too nostalgic/memorable to hate for me (except dream den lvl 10 stupid groink and water)
The 5 man napsack is not useless. It let's you exploit the game. You can get bitter sprays early, you can skip 30% of the perplexing pool to get yellows early (when you first land there), it's helpful when fighting gateling groinks, you can get to bulblax kingdom without blue's and you can kinda use it as a go here fuction.
I'm not really taking exploits into account because I don't find them to be a fair example of the game
Subteranean Complex is better then the Bulblax Kingdom because although you don't get as many purples. You can go in with 1 Pikmin and come out with all the purples in the cave and some extras!
I once got the Water Wraith stuck between a poison nozzle and a tunnel that it couldn't go through for some reason. It was kinda funny to see. But once you figure out how the AI works with the Water Wraith, he isn't that bad. He can't crush your Pikmin if you use the Swarm ability to press your entire army against a wall. Granted, with the Water Wraith chasing you, it's difficult to carry the treasure back to the ship safely. But what makes me dread Submerged Castle more than the Water Wraith are the bomb rocks and the volatile dweevils. There are way too many bomb rocks on the 4th floor, so much so it's very easy to lose a lot of Pikmin to that because you have very little time to react, and sometimes managing your squad, especially when you're under a lot of pressure, gets quite janky.
I feel like the Five-man Napsack was like "you can sleep and it lets you heal!" Like the sleep in the Kirby games, but then forgot to add the healing, lol.

Pretty solid list you got, submerged Castle is easily the most unique cave in the game, so it was kinda easy to guess it be number 1, but I can't blame you.

For me the Subterranean Cave was the preferred grind spot out of not just the purple pikmin, but the white, plus the eggs made it easy to get flowered, or get the mitites to potentially yield purple or red potions. Made the walk worth it.

Breadbugs are always underappreciated I am glad to see someone else loves them!! - love the final level of glutton's kitchen (also happy to see it ranked highly!! where it belongs!) where they're all just walking around doing their thing. 19:15 This theory is a fun one, but probably doesn't add up too well. The treasure in question, the Mysterious Remains, is a crustacean claw for sure, but it is clearly a cooked crab claw. Cooking crustacean shells brings out the red pigment due to chemical heat reactions. You could theorise that the emperor bulblax has a high enough internal temperature that it literally cooks its prey, but that seems unlikely. Furthermore, the fact that the treasure placement is not only different for the EU version (Where it is replaced with the Container of Knowledge), but also the JP version (Where it is replaced with the わかる者の シンボル, loosely translated to "Symbol of an Understood Person"). Because it's not there in the JP version, where the game was primarily developed, I think it's a reach to assume the devs put it there intentionally. The segmented crawbster is simply a caricature of a real life lobster, which does have disparate claws where the right claw is significantly larger than the left, and I don't think the "claw being eaten by the emperor bulblax" theory is really relevant.

Quick correction : the napsack actually has a really good use, the game just doesn’t explain it: the napsack is a lesser version of pikmin 3’s “go here” command, you use it to bring a captain back to the onion while the other is off doing other things, this is helpful is 1 captain has basically ran out of most of their pikmin but there’s a ton at the onions
It’s situational, since if you have more then 4 pikmin then most will be left behind but it’s still really helpful at times
Also it’s better then the rush boots, which are actively negative since you move faster then pikmin and if you get to far away they leave your squad
Yeah by what people have said in the comments it's basically a worse version of go here, and while I'll admit that it is better than I initially thought and that it actually has a use, I still hate it and my opinion of it hasn't really changed
I actually like the sleeping bag I’ve found good use out of its extremely situational ability’s
Edit: the justice alloy is a help when going floor to floor with nothing but your fists I have killed a lot of enemy’s with this and the rocket fist and it has been satisfying to just beat up everything in sight with your fist
Submerged castle is obviously #1 but personally I would put cavern of chaos at a distant #2. Glutton’s kitchen is cool but I legitimately hate sublevel 5, and the first and fourth sublevels are completely useless. Snagret Hole is really cool for the first two sublevels at least conceptually but then it just devolves into snagrets, annoying enemies, and dark gloomy imagery. Subterranean complex is very enjoyable and good conceptually overall but some of the sublevels (the one with the groinks mainly) are completely useless plus I have bad associations with it bc it’s what I use to grind purple pikmin for that horrible treasure in the wistful wild. All the other caves are either mediocre, uneventful, or actively painful (and not in a way that pays off like SC), and yet somehow I still think the caves are a worthwhile part of the game overall and that P2 is the best in the series so far.
also I feel like you understated how hard Dream Den is, it’s a contender for the hardest cave in the game imo, there’s 14 sublevels, no candypop buds, a lot of horrible floor layouts like sublevel 2 where a groink is on top of a tower, sublevel 7 where a million dirigibugs, snitchbugs, and blowhogs are all in the same room with a blocked exit, or sublevel 10 where there’s a groink along with all the worst water enemies (and fiery blowhogs with their ability to blow fire completely maintained in the water for some reason???) and you may not have enough blues to pick up the treasure.

Breadbugs can actually kill your pikmin if a breadbug takes something into its hole and there was pikmin trying to carry it for some reason they just die
it wasn't mentioned in the video, but "the key" also has an added layer of uselessness to it. once you collect it in your first playthrough...that's just it. challenge mode is unlocked. permanently. it's ALWAYS unlocked, meaning that collecting the key a second time or in any subsequent playthrough does literally nothing

personal favorite cave is the subterranean complex because the man at legs is my favorite boss in pikmin 2. An arachnorb with a machine gun is both very creative and fun to fight against once you realize that you need to use the terrain to not die instantly

The reason to use subterr complex to farm purples is because emergence cave will stop having purple candypop buds after you have a certain amount of purple pikmin
and the alternative to farming purples is wel... submerged castle which inflicts ptsd.

Nah submerged castle isn't my favorite, I just think it's the best, my favorite cave is probably the dream den because after it's done, I know I don't have to play anymore lol
Bud, the five-man napsack is the best upgrade in the game. The utility offered by it vastly outclasses the usual gamut of just becoming more damage resistant, which are significantly less important if you're experienced at the game. The ability to have your second captain be doing something while inactive is incredibly useful, not to mention the sequence breaks possible through pathing exploits.
A lot of people have said that it is better than I gave it credit, and I agree with them, but to me it is definitely not the best upgrade, some that I consider to be better are the Treasure Gauge, the whistle upgrade, and the rocket fist in some niche situations
All in all I just don't like using the knapsack, but by all means use it if it's fun and useful for you

Subterranean Complex needs you to bring literally one Pikmin to make into ten or so purple Pikmin. There are queen candy pop buds that turn that one Pikmin into more than that, and then those guys into even more. There’s less risk of you losing Pikmin on repeat visits
Yeah preserving pikmin is the best reason for choosing the subterranean complex over Bulblax Kingdom, but by the time I need a bunch of purples, I have enough of every Pikmin, so I take the convenience of the bulblax kingdom over the pikmin preservation of the subterranean complex

while i agree that white flower garden isn’t really noteworthy at all, i used the five man nap-sack quite a few times throughout my 2 play throughs. It’s the ONLY thing in pikmin 2 that you can simultaneously do with one captain while the other continues to work. need to get back to the base quickly but there’s still much more to do? the time it would take to walk back and then switch to continue doing your tasks is wayyyyy longer than if you simply lie down and continue working. it genuinely made my life easier. it’s no “go here” feature from 3, but it is something!

Somebody else probably pointed this out but in the video you said that the water wraith is immune to bitter spray, but it actually isn’t

Dream den is the worst imo. I like the titan dweevil but the whole cave preceeding it is just floor after floor of bs. Typically, I don't mind all the stuff pikmin 2 pulls on you bc even though surprise bombs are unfair, it feels like a good bit of fun when it happens, like a prank. But when there are 14 floors in a row of gattling groinks and cannon larva and the like, these usual twists of lemon begin to feel more like a drop of shit

2:34 As a speedrunner, this claim dealt psychic damage to me.
Also as a speedrunner, your number 2 pick also hurt me because it’s a freaking run ender. Due to a programming error, Breadbugs can just… randomly crash the game simply by existing. I lost a run four hours in because of that.

-Five Man Napsack is one of the best items in the game if you're multitasking because without Go Here from 3 it's the only way to send a captain back to base without controlling them.
-Pilated Snagret is easy to kill without losses if you know what you're doing. Just spray yellows and chuck them on his head when he's emerging (stuck or not), and he'll take enough damage that his AI will tell him to immediately reburrow. You just stunlock him. Easy and definitely doesn't take forever.
-Apparently the Metal Suit Z is useless because if you're already dying without it, you're still going to die with it? Huh? Extra health does nothing? - The 5 man knapsack is the worst treasure in the exploration kit hands down, everything else has a better ability, sure you can use it to carry a captain back to the ship, but that's pointless while in a cave because you have infinite time, and you're rarely above ground so it's not very useful there, the only time I could see someone using it is in a Speedrun to gain a few seconds
- Even if you use the strategy you mention to defeat the pileated snagret, it still isn't fun nor rewarding to do and still takes a long time, but I guess it is possible to beat it faster than what I said
- There are no attacks in Pikmin 2 that can one shot a captain with or without the Metal Suit Z, so it still wouldn't be useful for that, I will admit tho that it is useful for larva punching, still doesn't make it that good tho, also Zelda and Pikmin are completely different games so it wouldn't be right to compare them
- Bulblax kingdom is the best place to grind purples in my opinion and I did say in the video that it was my opinion, and when I said anyone who disagrees with me is wrong was a joke, sry if my sarcasm wasn't clear, but I also explained the reason why during the Subterranean complex section during 15:47 - 16:37 (oh wait, someone didn't finish the video)
- Boulders add a little bit of time because at the very end there will still be a few boulders falling before you can attack her again, it only adds a few seconds at most, but it's still more time

@@Aqbrhino another niche use of the napsack is to distract Dweevils. Since they target the closest carryable object to them, if you lay down right next to them as a treasure is passing them, they’ll pick you up instead of the treasure. It’s particularly helpful on Sublevel 2 of the Submerged Castle, which allows you to lure those dweevils down and kill them before they take the treasure as it comes down the hall, making it so they can’t slow you down and cause the Waterwraith to spawn.

generally I like caves that are unique or cave that aren't too easy and too long
snagret hole is the first challenging cave you encounter imo, the music is nice and the two first levels are cool visually. the gimmick of having some snagrets buried on certain sublevels is also pretty cool and the boss while boring is one of only boss that isn't cheese-able so you have to be focused while fighting it. and the Metal Suit is more fat hit points, imo it's quite useful to not die as quickly as without it.

I agree with you about the bosses and the fact that hole of heroes is essentially a boss run make it for not the best cave but it's at least an unique characteristic, it could be shorter though I think you placed it well
I really like the boss from frontier cavern, the wack ass layout and gimmick of the empress farting lil' deadly bunfaces endlessly is very unique and forces you to think outside the box. the same boss from the hole of hero is actually bad imo because the element of surprise isn't there anymore and the layout is too straightforward making it very easy to defeat
I like the general mechanical theme of the subterranean complex, the boss like you said is cool and as I've already said I like caves that aren't too easy and too long. 9 sublevels is the perfect number of sublevels
shower room is a bit like this too just replace the mechanical theme by.. shower room and a good boss by a bad boss in execution. the music is cool
cavern of chaos has a good boss too I agree and it has the perfect number of sublevels too
gluton kitchen is so charming and unique I love it
dream den is basically an endurance exercice, it's long and can be boring if you're decent enough at the game

in conclusion half of the caves are qualitative and while the first ones are lame in comparaison to the latter they do their jobs as tutorials

Interesting opinions, I do have to give credit to the Snagret hole for being unique and for the boss being uncheesable, doesn't mean I'd put it higher, but definitely something that stands out, also I agree that 9 sublevels is pretty much the perfect amount for a cave
And as for getting good, I'll work on it lol
I prefer using Bulblax Kingdom or even Shower Room over Subterranean Complex to farm purple Pikmin because it’s just less sublevels to navigate.
