I love the parallelism with the Wistful Wild. The start of the map is where you ended Pikmin 1, and the end of the map where you enter the final cave is where you got your first ship piece in Pikmin 1. It's so subtle too! Like, the game never made this obvious, you discover this for yourself! this is the sorta visual story telling that helps Pikmin thrive and standout! Not to mention the area has an amazing sense of finality to it, with the music, atmosphere, and toughest caves being here.
The Twilight River is probably my favorite Pikmin 3 location. It's the most memorable, and it has this really unique design that takes advantage of the natural world around it in a fun and new way. The stage has you land in the middle of two streams with lily pads, one of them is blocked, however. To access it, you need to go to the other stream and build a bridge then to let the lily pads go through, you use the winged Pikmin. From there, you are able to reach the domain of the boss, which is located on the top of a stump! The way that you tackle this area feels way more focused and interesting than in places like the Tropical Wilds, which didn't involve most of the map to get to the boss.
Did you know that The Valley of Repose, the only location in Pikmin 2 entirely original to the game, is based off of a street? The area where the bulborb sleeps is over a manhole and the area by the bridge is a crosswalk. There are more subtle details to also look out for, but those were the most notable.
The Formidable Oak has a lot of environmental details and offers some great variety, not only with its visuals, but with the level design. It's designed in a way where it's advantageous to bring almost any type of Pikmin. It also introduces this new mechanic where the Pikmin follow you, and it's interesting stuff, and I think it's well-executed. The Formidable Oak brings back this tension that the Pikmin series is known for, which was lacking from a lot of the game at that point, especially if you maxed out your fruit supply already. So, it's got tension, atmosphere, and cool designs, both visually and level-wise. At the very least, I don't think it's worse than The Impact Site.
The Forest Navel feels like the Pikmin 1 Area that does that "Dandori" concept they're introducing in Pikmin 4 best. Always a blast each playthrough to divise a plan to try and beat it in the least time possible
Wing Pikmin break The Tropical Wilds! Like, I never built that main bridge that led into the area with all the fruits. I just had my winged Pikmin take care of it all. I seriously wonder if Nintendo knew about all these exploits you can perform with the winged Pikmin.

Maybe this is just me but I didn't like the Awakening Wood that much. Personally liked the music and atmosphere of Forest of Hope more, and it also felt more restricting than the Forest of Hope. Still liked the rankings though. (:
Gotta disagree when it comes to the Valley of Repose. To me, it's an area that feels very barren to travel across. You start on one end of the map and always go in the same direction, veering left once to face they firey bulblax, and then staying to the right for the rest of your time there. I guess one of the fun parts of pikmin is getting to unlock alternate routes through an area, but the valley of repose doesnt have any that go both ways. Thats just me though, great video!

I gotta agree with Wednesday, Plus distant tundra has the whole cavern area which if we exclude Pikmin 2 caves in the analysis should give it a massive edge I feel. The highest pikmin 3 map being as low as #5 was surprising to me since I really enjoyed some of those maps, great video, I enjoyed hearing your thoughts!
I think you forgot to mention in formidable oak the plasm wraith will Go after your pikmin if it can’t reach olimar and in the water room will often block you from exiting by camping the bridges so it’s not that easy to cheese
The wraith doesn't directly target your pikmin, it just wanders around the entire arena trying to find a way to get to olimar, so as long as you wait for it to move, then you'll be fine
I haven't played the pikmin 4 demo cuz I want to go into the full game as blind as possible when it comes out, so I'll come back and answer this after playing it
My ranking: (Just played pikmin 3) 1 garden of hope 2 formidable oak 3 twilight river 4 distant tundra 5 tropical wilds Garden of hope is just perfect as a tutorial, the first area, then it forces you to stop 50% of your job cause you just have 2 pikmins, then when you come back the area is incredibly big, the water puzzle is great, which provides you to be careful to not blindly walking to enemies if you are multitasking, the pink pikmins bridge is perfect for at least 3 things in a row, the fruits, 1 because there is no other way, the other with the pink ones you can either open the gate or let the pikmin fly into the mini boss, and the blue pieces and that mini boss placed in the best place for it to force you to fight with blue and not reds as usual, and also an adiccional fight un the first part of the game with the same boss but in the other side, the 2nd boss imo its the hardest.... since you have to beat the crystal, then the feet, and has lots of phases, with the toungue or how it jumps, not that hard but at least its a blue pikmin boss that doesnt force you to just use blue ones(and also the little pressure with luis for casual players) Im going to be honest, i tried not to do the "leave brittany alone" strategy so it would be more intense for it to complete, as intended, and it did have an impact on the gameplay and the mechanic they were trying to do, maybe they did this that way cause casual players would never get it done. now for twilight river and tropical wilds i think it depends on different aproach than the lillies, first of all, the place is thought for pinkmins (honestly my fav) which is nice, but draws all the attention to them, so, what did nintendo do? Spiders! The most annoying but the best for keeping you stressed using pink pikmins, which regenerate every day or 2, having to check for the 3 webs (the 4th one in the cave doesnt count) if you replay for 100% then the 3 days you'll be fully focused on the mayority on the map since they are in important places, and if you dont want to worry about them, you can try using other types of pikmin, its the perfect balance system for not having 100 pink pikmins, besides its imposible to farm a lot of them while completing the map first time Distant tundra i'll say its a bit better than tropical wilds, obviously its shorter and a bit boring with the ambientation, but the puzzle to get with britanny can be nice at first, the "boss" fight its easy as hell but at least is durable, and the mini areas with the wissle can be a bit painful to get all your pikmins safe, i personally dont like this map, but i think it has a bit... of difficulty with good enemy placement, and the extra cave part Tropical wilds its nice, imo i dont like it, the part of the little river is good for you to decide if you want to make the shortcut or not... but its unnecesary, and the part with the peach, that uses at least a 30% of the map and you'll go there once, the puzzle of the three isnt that intuitive for casual players, but that doesnt count, and it has several bosses which i think are nice to compensate the horrendous design of 50% of the map (the view is amazing, but the gameplay sucks and the worm boss doesnt even work if you charge at him even when he is sucking) the banana area is also thought for blue pikmins, but you can just bring pink ones and no other area that requires speciffically blue ones (you can even get to the water boss with pinks)
Is the Bulblax considered a Bulborb? I'm not trying to correct you, I've always been confused on that. Especially since the fiery variant looks just like a bulborb. But growing up with 1 and 2 in 01 and 04 respectively, I just thought they were all "grub-dogs" I think the Formidable Oak is much, much worse than the Final Trial. Now its design may be more intricate but I never thought it was very fun to play. SO excited for Pikmin 4, I really hope we see the OG BeadyLong Legs again as well as the Emperor Bulblax. We already have seen the Empress (and Armored Canon Beetle which was a super surprise), so I kinda would be shocked if we don't at least see the Emperor.
Looking at a family tree of the enemies on Google, it shows that breadbug's are a close relative of Bulborbs, but not quite bulborbs themselves, they are both part of the same family called Pansarus, but then split into different genuses called pseudooculli for the bulborbs and gluttonae for the breadbugs. I personally think formidable oak is more fun because there is more to do rather than just a single puzzle at the beginning and then a tedious bossfight at the end, but by all means of you think the final trial is more fun, then who am I to say that you can't have an opinion. I'm also very excited for Pikmin 4, AND WHEN I SAW THE ARMORED CANNON BEETLE, I WAS SO EXCITED, and I'm thinking it's pretty likely we'll see emperor bulblax again, and if we're seeing all of these OG bosses, then I'd say it's also likely we'll see Beady Long Legs again

Yeah if I could go back I would put the twilight river higher, I'll probably do that in my updated one with Pikmin 4 areas as well
