Since shower room is so forgettable, and submerged castle is so mean it feels out of place in the perplexing pool, I've always thought the castle should have been moved to the wistful wild, and the shower room should have become a diet submerged castle. What I mean by that is that instead of the water in the pool draining when you open up the entrance, it stays there and only allows you to bring blue pikmin with you. Then, on the first sublevel you encounter a shit ton of fire and firey bulblaxes, so you need to find some red candypop buds on the same floor to overcome the level. The next level would be the same but for electricity, then poison and then a level with heavy objects and tough enemies for purples, finishing off with a raging bloyster fight in water. There would also be some heavy treasures in the water and some blue candypop buds, so if you lost too many blues you'd have to lose your purples and whites to grab the treasures. Just a cool idea I had.
5:08 i agree completely! i often hear people recommend the subterranean complex for purples instead and it always puzzled me since the bulblax kingdom is right there
Even though I don't like christmas, the frontier cavern is one of my favourite caves. I always try to rush it as soon as I unlock blues so I can get the excellent rush boots reward, and I have many fond memories of the cave, like on my first playthrough and I had 55 pikmin get wiped by a stray anode beetle
I always thought the best caves were all in Perplexing Pool, and Dream Den is a good final test that is the last dungeon of the game. Everything else usually slips through my mind and blends together
This is 100% nostalgia talking but the caves in 2 are all so cozy to me. I love the surreal feeling from the music to the nonsensical layouts. Pikmin 4 caves are definitely an improvement in every way imaginable but nothing could ever take me back to how 2 makes me feel. It's really funny how the Pikmin 2 caves manage to be so distinct while (almost) also all blending together and being essentially indistinguishable. I was surprised by how many of these I ended up remembering vividly despite not being able to name most of them. I wish more caves had multi-floor gimmicks like the Water Wraith. An idea I had was one of the industrial-themed caves having some central tower that you are descending next to and interact with on each floor. I think Snagret Hole is probably my favorite barring Submerged Castle. The little bit of story telling in the first two sublevels is really fun, and I think every cave would've benefited from something like that.
Snagret Hole isn't my top cave in Pikmin 2 (Submerged Castle or Dream Den likely takes that spot) but it did scare the crap out of me as a kid as that was the first cave I went through that had boss fights that weren't on the final floor. My 8 year old brain couldn't handle that idea at the time lol
My highlight sublevel from HoH has got to be Sublevel 6 purely because it’s the only place you can hear the flooded stump track, and that is one of the best songs in the game.
I remember seeing are a reccomendarion on the wiki for the floor with the ten cannon beetles to just use white Pikmin to carry stuff and mostly ignore the beetles. I tried it out and it worked ridiculously well, with the beetles being almost unable to hit them with minimal captain intervention most of the time.
Never would have thought to rank the caves, very nice. I like how your top 3 caves are the three caves with Bulbmin. Sublevel 2 is probably the highlight sublevel for me in Submerged Castle, as that is where I first discovered Bulbmin when I played this when I was younger. It was such a fascinating thing to discover and a huge relief in a seemingly Impossible challenge.
Yellows are usefull, don't diss them, they can HEAR you Fun fact: when i played this game for the first time I went to dream den before hole of herous, if not louie and disappointing boss callad Raging long legs, I would fought that hole of herous is the the final challenge ( seoriusly why i raging long legs so easy )
I love submerged castle, but weirdly enough, bc I’m a lot better at the game now, my dandori skills make it so I can pretty much make it through every floor without the waterwraith spawning, which makes it a bit disappointing. I wish there was a hard mode that reduced the timer! (Thats why the pikmin 4 version was so eh for me. I literally waited around for the wraith to show up for like 2 minutes after collecting all the treasure and materials please nintendo do an ultra spicy mode dlc!!!)
Fun fact: On day 2, after returning to the overworld go back to the emergence cave and get 10 more purples so that you can then SKIP the hole of beasts on day 3 and instead go to the white flower garden instead and start destroying all of the poison in the awakening woods.
I'm pretty sure the reason the empress bulblax is the first boss is to teach players they can soft reset if things go horribly. Which yes, is an intended mechanic.
On Sublevel 4 on The Dream Den, You can Attempt to Skip it with White pikmin, because if you get lucky with anode beetle and Armored cannon beetles are slow 9:02 also submerged castle is there, at #2, it doesn’t have its own section, titled Frontier Cavern
For me, excluding the 4 tutorial caves because we all know where they're going 1: Frontier Cavern, CHRISTMAS THEME GOES HARD. This cave just does so much so well. Sure the sublevels might not feel as unique as something like HOH, but it doesn't need it. The empress rematch is nice, and it overall is just a great cave to go through. Also more bulbmin. 2: Hole of Heroes, This used to be my favorite cave in the game. It's a great theme, with rooms made for certain enemies, and a boss rush with a nice challenge added on top (usually). Also Bulbmin. My only wish is that Giant Breadbug and Waterwraith could've gotten an appearance, but it's understandable why they didn't. Their caves wouldn't feel unique otherwise. Only other complaint is Raging Long Legs. Fuck Raging Long Legs. Hate that stupid Arachnode. 3: Subterranean Complex, Ok I'll be honest I wasn't expecting this to place so high, but there's nothing actually bad about this cave. The metal theme is amazing, none of the sublevels feel redundant, and man at legs is a great boss for it. 4: Glutton's Kitchen, Too few breadbugs, too many bulbears, one giant loaf 5: Submerged Castle, The cave is fine, it's an amazing introduction to bulbmin, but it just feels like it's meh. The waterwraith feels like the least problematic part of this cave, which is really disappointing for its only appearance in 2. Other than that I don't really have much to say, other than I was contemplating between this and snagret hole for number 5. 6: Snagret Hole, the sublevel design is amazing if we just ignore 4 and 5, also the Antenna beetle is a pretty interesting design that I wish came back over the gold clodsires in 4. Also I love how this cave is not only guarded by a snagret with several snagrets inside, but is put where the snagrets were in the forest of hope. The only thing holding this back is that pileated snagret is a fucking coward, and the rusty gulches. 7: Dream Den, yeah I'm a dream den hater, this cave is not one I look forward to replaying. A lot of these sublevels are hell incarnate, notably sublevel 4, 10, and the dweevil floor. Titan Dweevil is ok I guess, it's a nice fight but it doesn't help it enough to put it higher. Also tower groinks terrified me as a kid. 8: Cavern of Chaos, it does great at showing that the difficulty is skyrocketing, but some of the sublevels are just not fun. Most notable being 1, 2, and 8 (totally didn't forget some of them). The emperor rematch is fun though, especially with the mysterious claw being a slight foreshadowing to the crawbster. Also speeding through sublevel 9 will never not be fun. 9: Shower Room, the tile theme is cool, we all have a spot for jellyfloats, and some of the sublevels are really fun. Other than that it's alright, ranging bloyster is whatever. 10: Bulblax Kingdom, While the cave does its job in being difficult, that's kinda it. For something called "Bulblax Kingdom" to only have a few orange bulborbs and a laughably easy emperor bulblax, it just feels a tad disappointing if I'm being honest. The puzzle after Bulblax is cool though.
Favorite Cave: Subterranean Complex - Love the aesthetic, the difficulty is just right, and farming Purples and Whites here is super easy. Least Favorite Cave: Snagret Hole - I hate Snagrets. Especially the Pileated Snagret. It's my least favorite Boss and I ALWAYS dread going down there.
I think the only disagreement i have is snagret hole. I hate them and the pileated, so it goes to the bottom for me :/ lots of good points made in this video
The dream den is cool but i rather much deal with the larvas in the narrow paths than the damn fish thing on top of the stupid tower on sub level 2 😂. Theyre hella unique enemies but i swear those things are such a pain in the ass to deal with, i remember struggling to just get the pikmins up there while avoiding the shots.
idea for a memorable sublevel for Hole of Heroes Sublevel 9. It's full of every type of bulborb, and when people on youtube recorded this floor they would always go solo and punch all the bulborbs to death at 2x speed while the Sparta Remix played in the background ahhh, 2009 piktube.
I cleary remember citadel of spiders giving you whites in sublevel 3 but having buried teasure in sublevel 2,making me replay the damn cave It wasnt even that hard,it was just annoying
honestly if there's anything I think is bad about the cavern of chaos its that its entrance is on absolutely no detailed pedestal or in the same place as something from the previous game. it's just there. and with no challenge too. you can get to it pretty easily either way. its location SUCKS
After all these years I still find the name “Dweevil” funny, it sounds like an insult but it isn’t. It’s all about how you say it, having it written out lessens the impact y’know?
Dream Den Floor 4 was so atrociously unfair and unenjoyable, it made me quit the game. That particular combination of map type (the metal twisting ramp), enemy selection (cannon larvae & electric bugs), and hazard selection (poison) is specifically designed to be a Kobayashi Maru scenario. Other "unfair" floors at least have a gimmick or puzzle to them - there's a "trick" or "hack" to it, that once you figure it out, "solves" the floor and lets you get through with minimal deaths (even if the trick is to just reset for a better layout). For example, with the Empress Bulblax rematch, you can hug the exit where rocks don't fall, or with the Water Wraith, just go fast and/or split the treasures up into multiple visits. But Dream Den 4 has no correct answer, not even resetting helps because that map type doesn't have much random variation. If the cannon larva gets an attack off toward you, it WILL kill almost all of the Pikmin in your squad, so you need to kill each one as fast as possible, which means Purples. Because of the cramped space and long, narrow hallways, you don't have any space to try any sneaky (and time-consuming) super-conservative back-attack strategy. Since the larva still get to execute their "shake off" animation on death, which sends the Pikmin forward, and its facing direction on death is essentially random, there's just a fixed 60-ish% chance that all the Pikmin you assigned to that larva are going to get thrown off the cliff, and there is literally nothing you can do about it. Why poison hazards? White Pikmin have the lowest damage output, and cannon larvae don't eat, so you can't even sacrifice a few to kill them with poison damage. Also, because you need Purples and Whites specifically, the game is targeting the 2 hardest-to-get types. The electric bugs don't contribute all that much, and could have been any other minor enemy, serving just to force you to throw Pikmin onto it to flip & attack it, collecting your Pikmin into a small space for the cannon larvae to kill a bunch in one shot. But, the electricity is the biggest threat, being an insta-kill, so they're marginally more unfair than a dwarf Bulborb or whatever.
Hot Take: I honestly find the Submerged Castle to be a tad overrated. Don’t get me wrong, in concept, it is an easy 10/10. But in actual execution, I feel like it’s pretty weak when you really look at it. I just did a no-death run of Pikmin 2 in preparation for Pikmin 4, and I never even saw the water wraith until sublevel 4. I could easily clear out the first three floors within the time limit, and that was even with the extra carefulness that goes into a no-death run…I could have went much quicker had I been acting liberal with my squads lives. The only exception to this was sublevel 4, which is an entirely different issue. Sublevel 4’s “difficulty” is not legitimate…it’s borderline Kaizo! I personally don’t find the whole trap system to be as bad as some people do, but sublevel 4 is just egregious…they took a handful of rooms and “cntrl-v”ed a bunch of bomb rocks in and called it a day. Furthermore, I STILL don’t even think I would have had that much trouble with it if I didn’t care about my Pikmin dying! The concepts behind the Submerged Castle (being the one pikmin type, Water Wraith, and Kaizo), could have worked very well individually, and while you probably could have gotten away with combining two of them, all three together is just too much. Honestly, I feel like it even does a disservice to the Water Wraith! If the Water Wraith had a cave that was specifically designed for him to be they main attraction in, then that would have made him even cooler, but instead he ends up being just another thing to avoid whilst dealing with hazards you don’t have the correct pikmin for and dodging a gratuitous amount of bomb rocks from the ceiling. …with that said though…I cannot even begin to describe the emotions I felt when I saw it faithfully(kinda) recreated in 4. Hands-down the best introduction to Purple Pikmin they could have ever done! Anyway…thanks for reading my thesis, I guess.
I don't see how putting a buried treasure in a cave that doesn't need whites could ever be considered "good" with how the rest of the game is designed. Not a single other cave has this quirk, if it was the tutorial to the concept of buried treasure in a cave without poison, that'd be fine, but instead it's teaching players to bring whites *just in case* and then it never happens again unless the cave itself gives you whites, such as the later buried treasure in the same cave, and in bulblax kingdom. I personally would rank the cave as my least favorite specifically for it giving misleading instructions for that cave itself and for the rest of the game for a first time player.
Before the video releases im predicting that dream den is in the bottom half due to it just having poorly designed sub-levels even if the final boss is cool
I think I prefer Pikmin without caves. There fun occasionally but when the majority or even half of the game is caves I find them annoying. Pikmin 4 did improve on caves in some aspects, but also made them worse in some aspects. Like in pikmin 2 at the bottom of Every cave there was a unique boss, that was always the best part of the cave but a lot of caves in 4 don’t even have bosses
2:51 THIS is the single greatest use of that Wallace and Gromit meme, no contest
And the fact they’re WHITE Pikmin 😭
Literally one of the top 10 jokes of all time, it's so funny
No White Pikmin Gromit!
We’ve forgotten the White Pikmin!
OH MY FUCKING LORD ITS BEAUTIFUL.
Watching those purples get smoked by the Segmented Crawbster hurt me deeply
Holy shit the Wallace bit caught me off guard
Ranking every place where I can hide a baby
What.
Frontier Cavern is so forgottable for me, I sometimes think it’s LOST MEDIA!

I lost so many pikmin in snagret hole 💀
i FREAKING LOVE SNAGRET HOLE
My highlight sublevel from HoH has got to be Sublevel 6 purely because it’s the only place you can hear the flooded stump track, and that is one of the best songs in the game.
NO WHITE PIKMIN GROMIT WE FORGOT THE WHITE PIKMIN!
i'd love to see your take on the Pikmin 4 caves. Great video, dude.
14th Emergence Cave. 13th Hole of Heroes. 12th White Flower Garden. 11th Hole of Beasts. 10th Citadel of Spiders. 9th Dream Den. 8th Bulblax Kingdom. 7th Snagret Hole. 6th Shower Room. 5th Cavern of Chaos. 4th Subterranean Complex. 3rd Frontier Cavern. 2nd Submerged Castle. 1st Glutton's Kitchen.

The best part about the empress bulblax was when it birthed creatures (onion style) out of its hole of heroes
me personally i'd rank all the caves at f except submerged castle in a. but i think this list is respectable, too
It’s so crazy that little creatures that look like bread are powerful enough to make treasures *lost media!?*

Amazing how much this mirrors my personal ranking
For me, excluding the 4 tutorial caves because we all know where they're going
1: Frontier Cavern, CHRISTMAS THEME GOES HARD. This cave just does so much so well. Sure the sublevels might not feel as unique as something like HOH, but it doesn't need it. The empress rematch is nice, and it overall is just a great cave to go through.

Oh god.. not that sublevel 4!
Did I play too much to remember exactly what floors you’re talking about before you mention them in the highlight?
So the challenge mode caves don't count now?!

Now rank every special challenge 🌚
Every cave in pikmin 2 is actually tied for 14th place because I hate pikmin 2
IMO I think the submerged castle should’ve had more content and I wish there was more horror elements in the cave
But it’s still good
Dream den sublevel 4 is so ugly. Electricity plus cannon beetles plus a chance of Pikmin flying off the edge lol
banger vid
I don't have Pikmin 2 but I want to get it but I want to get the wii version
Cool
PIKMIN 4 RANKING
Fiddlebert
Welp
I like burgers.
whar, where is PIKMIN 4 CAVE?!!!
MAKE TJE PIKMIN 4 CAVE OR I WILL SEND DRAKE TO THE SUBLEVEL 4 of POOP DEN!!
I think I prefer Pikmin without caves. There fun occasionally but when the majority or even half of the game is caves I find them annoying. Pikmin 4 did improve on caves in some aspects, but also made them worse in some aspects. Like in pikmin 2 at the bottom of Every cave there was a unique boss, that was always the best part of the cave but a lot of caves in 4 don’t even have bosses
i gotta ask, does anyone even care for the shower room? i just remember lots o fallin boulders a-hyuk
You forgot the fiddlecave, the cave where you unlock fiddlebert. Fake fan/
