    Quality review as always. I've got lots of great UVI stuff but I'm feeling this just misses the mark for me. I prefer round robins or especially velocity layers and the ability to import samples with velocity layers. I can't find answers in the PDF for a few things. Are your own samples saved in a preset? Can you drag and drop MIDI? Is MIDI even output so you can record it? I see that you can edit the velocity curve applied to the amp and filter so that makes up a bit for the lack of layers/round robings, but can this also be applied to your own samples? Nothing in the PDF about adding your own samples. Give us one more Cameron after morning coffee where you really dig in. I'm intrigued but not sold.

      There should be a way for midi record if you use falcon (script events -> script processor -> utilities -> midi record), I was able to do it with other instruments, too.

    • @Garflips
      @Garflips ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Requiring Falcon in order to have MIDI export is a deal breaker. I'm actually more curious about how it handles user samples, how they are saved and if you can apply the velocity/filter parameters on user samples to avoid machine gunning.

    • @jezzyby47
      @jezzyby47 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Garflips - It's good but i wish FXpansion would bring back Guru or Geist as either of these would do what you are asking this to do. I was curious about some of the things you mentioned also as well as this, if you buy vintage vault, how many of these samples are included in the drum machines within vintage vault? I was wondering if it would be worth the additional cost for these samples basically or are there enough percussion samples in vintage vault. These are great samples but not many who are doing say pop or rock would use most of them in fact in the last 40 years i can only think of Living on the ceiling by Blancmange who used these kind of sounds within that genre of music.

    • @Garflips
      @Garflips ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There's been an update and some questions finally answered by UVI on the forums. MIDI export has been added and you can apply filter effects to user samples. I believe the big selling point here is the sequencers - they can be euclidean or highly syncopated if you want it. Apparently the samples have layers but UVI is never very specific about layers and round robins with their libraries. It sounds good though so I'm not knocking it.

      It's odd that nobody has answered this even a year later. I know Falcon 3 has a midi out thing. Perhaps the generated notes from the plugin can be routed to Falcon's midi out but if you only have Workstation, then this would be of no use.
      I think this question is critical to workflow. At 150 USD it is a non-trivial investment.

    Q. Is there a way to create more variations for a preset rhythm then switch to them via key-switch, for various sections of a song ? so far I only see you use the decimate, and steps knobs to create variations. Basically, I wish that there was a way to create rhythmic variations, and assign them to key-switches. I didn't see this in the video. The way you showed it, is that once you select a preset rhythm, that highest key triggers the full rhythm, but there is no way to switch to other rhythms via key-switches. So.. Am I missing something here ? how would you go about switching to multiple rhythms with this engine ?

    It's interesting to note that most TH-camrs don't read the manual: No one showed how easy it is to use your own samples *BUT THEY COMPLAIN* that it's not possible to use custom samples. And 5 minutes in, you already answered the questions by showing how easy it is. It's smart of UVI to pay Cameron to produce these videos.

      I’ve just got a reply back from UVI regarding this….
      Percussion Factory does not feature a MIDI export option as it would not be able to cope with the Auto-Align feature. All shaken instruments have a pre-ring time that needs to be compensated in order to have a tight groove. To achieve that, all samples have been pre-computed to extract their rhythmic high-point. This latency varies greatly from one round robin to another, is not tempo related and can go up to 500ms. This is especially annoying for the first beat where the Percussion Factory engine smartly shortens this pre-ring in realtime in order to start directly.
      Furthermore, not implementing these features to MIDI would result in major differences between engine’s and DAW’s playback, which would be very frustrating. For more complex use cases, we recommend using several instances of the plug-in.

      Each preset in Percussion Factory is composed of 8 slots you can play and combine using the associated performance keys, but you can't assign multiple presets to each keys with a single instance of the product.
      For this type of use case, we recommend you to use multiple instances, or build your own custom Multi in UVI Workstation or Falcon.

    An awesome piece of sw however there are two things i don't like about it and wish they got fixed.
    1. Needs to have the "Auto-Align" option Off by default instead of being On or at least have a global switch at hand to do it for all 8 instruments at once otherwise when you drag the Midi onto your daw everything is de-syncced and sounds nothing like your arrangement in Percussion Factory (btw souldn't this auto align feature do the opposite?) and you manually need to enter each of the eight sequences to turn it off every time you switch presets cause A-A is always on. A pain and i don't know how this got overlooked.
    2. From my experience UVI doesn't consider customer feedback, no matter how much info you provide to improve their products and benefit both sides. Once they've released something forget about updates, they just move forward cause they release so much new stuff i believe it's impossible for them to maintain or update.
    Maybe one day 🤷‍♂️

    Ciao! Peter
    There is no possibility to link Percussion Factory and your DAW's transport functions, but you can trigger the sequence in Percussion Factory in your DAW by using the note C4, and trigger the sequences for each individual sound by using the notes C2 to C3.
    You can also use the Export Midi function in order to generate a MIDI file corresponding to your sequence, that you can then drag and drop to your DAW.
    Hope this clarifies, feel free to ask if you have any further questions.

      I was also wondering this. @UVI does Percussion Factory have multi outs?

      Good question. According to manual page 6 it has 9 output channels. Midi export is also possible.

    It's a pity about the Ilock thing - Ilock blue-screened my PC, and I had to fresh install from scratch. Also, you need another bit of CPU-draining software running in the background in addition to this. Otherwise, this would be a day-one buy for me, it sounds fantastic. Beats me (pun intended) why VST companies put all these hurdles between their products and their customers. I'll stick with getting Medolic's Beat Scholar when payday comes around - just drop the VST file into a folder and there it is in the DAW, no fuss.

    Maximum number of hits in a 'circle' is 16 ?. When odd meters is concerned I wonder how Percussion Factory deals with for instance 17/16 23/16, and as in First circle 22/8? I'm kinda into that sort of stuff. I get it that for instance 11 15 14 7 hits per 'circle' is fine, as long as it it below 16. So again, how about 17, 23, 22 etc beyond 16. ?

      It looks like you can have different lengths per circle, and combining loops of 3, 4 and 5 would produce similar results over multiple bars. That’s what the video suggested anyway. You can also run set your daw tempo to 1/2 tempo or 2x so ex 12/16 can be 6/8 or 24/32. Just a thought. The ideal situation would be native support for any fraction.

    Percussion Factory sounds really good and has some great features. Unfortunately it sounds very repetetive. This is because a sequence can only have 16 steps. What a pity! I know that other musicians have already asked for an update with increased steps. Will there be one?

    • @djjuno106
      @djjuno106 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You could get more steps by loading this up in falcon and adding one of the sequencer,arp utility plugins.

      @@djjuno106 Thank you! This sounds rather like a workaround and I do not use Falcon. I'm not a programmer, but I can imagine that - if UVI wants it - it shouldn't be a big deal to implement more steps into Percussion Factory itself.

    After watching this I was very excited and bought the plugin only to find it to be one of the biggest disappointments I've ever had with a music plugin.
    1. Worst activation process I've ever had for any plugin. Insanely convoluted for no reason.
    2. You cannot export midi or route live midi out!
    3. Most importantly YOU CAN'T SYNC THE PLUGIN'S PLAY BUTTON TO THE DAW!!! You can only sync to the tempo!!! This means literally no way to get the beats into your DAW except by recording as an external instrument!!
    I messaged UVI for a refund. I will update here as they respond.
