I always wondered if I wear too little sun screen bc I usually wear it in summer only and I‘m not that much of an outdoor person so I just don’t see the point and I‘m glad to see that it really has no point this time of the year.
With that low index, no wonder Caucasians have white skin. Evolution works that way, their skins don't need much melanin because their environment has a low UV index. Interesting.
I'm from Brazil, is even funny to listen to those low numbers, I never saw a number below 6 here, is cloudy and rainy today, can barely see any sun and the UV is 8.
That's funny to me. Avrage here from October to April is 1. It gets tricky if you are going to be out in the snow on a sunny day though, becouse snow reflects the sun so you have to effectively dubble it.
I just put it on every morning. It’s easier for me to do it routinely so I won’t forget. I know I won’t check the UV index every day, I barely check the weather lol
Depending on where you live you can just not use sunscreen at all during winter unless you maybe plan to go outside for a long period of time (especially in the snow), like I’m German and I just don’t wear sunscreen from November to march unless I go skiing, because the uv index doesn’t gory above 2 (1 for December and january)

I still use sunscreen even when it’s winter and the maximum it goes is like 1. UV rays are all-year round. It’s better to be safe than sorry. And sometimes it’s even worse when you’re on high altitudes surrounded with snow and ice as glass reflects the UV rays more and can damage your skin even further. Finally... As a nordic person, I'm getting sick of all the nagging about sunscreen on everyone, all year around. UV index here right now is almost non-existent.
Im also a Nordic person, and because of my light skin and not wearing enough sunscreen when i was Young, I recently had an arctinic keratose removed from my lip at the age of 45. My mother just had some removed from her nose and her lip. Her husband has had numerous removed from all over his head, and I just spotted one on my boyfriends nose. Light skinned people are at great risk even up here In the north, so I wear sunscreen Daily to supress the damage Ive allready endured.
I get it, yet I can watch my sundamage and agespots darken and grow if Im skipping sunscreen in the winter, even when Im mostly inside, so the accumulation of even that little bit is still having an effect, especially if you have previous damage.
I’m allergic to physical sunscreens and the only chemical sunscreen that doesn’t break me out causes flare ups on my cheeks if I wear them daily. I never knew about this above 3 uv index rule, I’ll check the uv index in my city from now on! thank you so much! ❤
I've been wondering the same thing, where I live the uv index is almost 0 in the winter so I don't wear spf, but I don't know if that should change when I start vitamin A...
Oh yes I wondered the same, also if you have freckles from sun damage, is it ok to skip sunscreen for those morning runs where index is below 3@@mylovelybunnylife4267

Thank you! I live in Northern Europe and I was never share if I truly need sunscreen every day (like so many online say), even though I rarely see the sun for >6 months a year.
In Indonesia, especially in the past few months, we never touch < 8. Almost every single day the uv index is 9 or 10. So yeah, i guess it's everyday for us here. Thanks for sharing this❤ who knows i'll live abroad one day, surely will remember thiss❤❤
True:) I live in Finlandia where the uv-index reaches 3 only half of the year so I can happily skip sunscreen for many months. Unless the snow is reflecting a lot of rays, that is.
I read a comment from a woman who said “even when it’s dark and stormy out, I still wear sunscreen”, which I questioned and then had a zillion people tell me that there are scattered rays, even if it’s dark and stormy out. Then I tried to imagine putting on a bikini during a dark, cloudy thunderstorm and going out there to see if I end up with tan lines…🤔😜
I have never put so much sunscreen in my life until I moved to Sydney Australia 😅, at 28yo I realized I had a lot more fine lines especially in summer, the sun here is NO JOKE compared to where I’m from (Paris, France) where the sunrays are extremely scarce lol. I’m 30 now and I am so glad I started wearing sunscreen everyday and exposing less my face directly to the sun, and protecting my face with a hat… and this good habit paid off- a lot less fines lines and I look younger now than I did a couple of years ago 😂
I live in Australia where the UV index tends to be between very high and extreme, even in Winter so i don’t think this one applies to me. Its UV 11 today and 34 degrees Celsius today. The coolest day this week. As i rarely even check the weather to see if i need a coat I am probably safer to just always apply sunscreen in the morning incase.
The skin cancer foundation recommends sunscreen always irregardless because of how differently everyone responds to any degree of UV radiation, how little it can take to induce DNA damage and eg being in a UV index of 2 but for 4 hours vs a UV index of 6 for 5 minutes, and how quickly the UV index can change, so i just stick to wearing sunscreen irregardless. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in Ireland even with a generally low UV index most of the year so not worth playing around with lol
Just an fyi “irregardless” isn’t a word. It also would mean the opposite of what you’re trying to say. Not trying to be annoying just letting you know lol.
@@giraffe1219 “s irregardless a word? Yes. It may not be a word that you like, or a word that you would use in a term paper, but irregardless certainly is a word. Yes someone is finally saying it! I live in Belgium during the winter our uv index is 0 or 1 max usually. Meanwhile a lot of people here are watching influencers from the other side of the world who live in a much warmer climate talk about having to wear sunscreen in winter. 😅
As a general rule, I do not wear sunscreen from october to march, unless there is snow on the ground. I live far north, and the pale winter sun doesn't do harm. Snow changes things, especially in the mountains where the atmosphere is thin.
She said to the person with 0 melanin, who once got sunburn in February in the northern US. I sunburn if i think too hard about the sun. Yeah, I'm gonna keep wearing sunscreen every day. ☀️
I mean its based on UV index and not weather. Winter can have some intense UV. You CAN get sunburned in winter especially if the skies are clear and youre outside for a while. I say this as a person with lots of melanin. I wear sunscreen in winter for that reason. Running errands, maybe not. But outdoor winter activities, for sure.
I live somewhere where it's rarely sunny, we get a lot of rain and heavy cloud cover. Yes when it's sunny in late spring and summer, I will wear it everywhere.
Generally speaking I don't buy a lot of clothes or shoes anymore I have plenty, I'm shopping in my own closet,I wear scarfs when it's really cold when my neck is warm I'm warm...I like my lotion or body cream oil based and with petroleum jelly in it they are the best for dry skin in my opinion Good video 😊
I love that you taught us how to find the UV index on my iPhone. I look at it everyday now. If I am staying inside I don’t use it under 3 and but I do still but a thin layer on if I am going to be out in the sun even at 2-3. I love that I am in control not that it is a must to slap it on thick every day. ❤
I’m so happy that you said this. It’s quite ignorant to say that you have to wear it everyday since not everyone lives at a place with an high uv index. For instance, I live in Northern Europe, as the UV index is 0 like half of our year. I haven’t seen the sun in weeks, and I barely get 6 hours of daylight (notice daylight, not sunlight). Rather this is a time where we need all of the d-vitamin we can get since our lack of it is depression inducing.
A good option for winter in AK is the Cerave AM moisturizer with SPF 30 or tinted Australian Gold SPF 50 gives you a little color and love it as a foundation. Both are budget friendly.
I use sunscreen as a daily moisturizer in the summer, but usually use SPF 15 moisturizer in the winter - here in Europe the UV index is rarely above 1 in winter 😄
Thank you for clarifying this. I live in the UK where the national health system recommends everyone takes vitamin D supplements from September to April because there isn't enough sun to produce it
Thank you for explaining! I live in the Midwest and the UV index lately has been 0. Tip: I'm constantly asking my smart speaker for the weather. I also always ask for the UV index while I'm getting ready so I know if I need to apply sunscreen.
Ty. Because after all the cleaning, toners, serums, moisturizers, it feels silly to put that on, especially if im only exposed to sun for about 2 hours… not usually direct sun light either… i will look up the number from now on. I FOUND AN APP AND PLACED IT AS A WIDGET! Uv is .7 where i am ❤😊
Im 50 and u just learned about skin care. i now have a morning & night routine. Im fair with freckles. I need that habit. Im glad fate can be on my side some days but i need this habit of applying every day.
It's not just U.V as an exogenous factor that triggers melasma. Visible light especially blue light has been implicated as a contributor to hyperpigmentation, too. Therefore, wear sunscreen EVERY SINGLE DAY, especially the tinted ones which have a visible light blocking effect as well. - M.D Dermatology

But as a runner I felt I needed it. Now I know that if I run at 9am, it's not a terrible thing to forget to wear sunscreen or if the UV rays are under 3. ❤
My issue with the UV index is whatever is measuring it in my city, must be in shade or something, because it consistently has shown 2 while looking outside was like staring into a lamp
How is your forehead so smooth and wrinkle free with small pores!!😍 You are older than me but look younger, please share your beauty secrets!! I thought only people with more melanin could have that blessing
She's using a filter, there's too much blur effect if you observe.
As a Scandinavian where the UV index is 0 in the wintertime and you have not seen the sun i weeks - I can really appreciate this ❤
Finally someone said it i was so tired of people pushing to wear sunscreen everytime of the day😅
Dr. Dray just left the chat
I mean she wears spf with blinds closed and lights turned on 🤨 you can see it in her videos and it's hella unnecessary. I get it that she has access to virtually unlimited spf bottles but not all of us do
😂😂😂
As a Dr. Dray lover this made me lol😅
To be fair Dr. Dray goes out almost everyday and she lives in Texas lol.
This cracked me up 😂
Wow no dermatologist ever spoke about this. Everyone was so confused. Makes so much sense. Thank you for talking about it!!
Finally... As a nordic person, I'm getting sick of all the nagging about sunscreen on everyone, all year around. UV index here right now is almost non-existent.
I skip sunscreen in winter because i go to work when it’s dark and comes home when it’s dark lmao
@@lilmoon6141 exactly 😂
Im also a Nordic person, and because of my light skin and not wearing enough sunscreen when i was Young, I recently had an arctinic keratose removed from my lip at the age of 45. My mother just had some removed from her nose and her lip. Her husband has had numerous removed from all over his head, and I just spotted one on my boyfriends nose. Light skinned people are at great risk even up here In the north, so I wear sunscreen Daily to supress the damage Ive allready endured.
@@Firkant2 I know.. but when the UV index is at 0-1.. there is literally no point.
I get it, yet I can watch my sundamage and agespots darken and grow if Im skipping sunscreen in the winter, even when Im mostly inside, so the accumulation of even that little bit is still having an effect, especially if you have previous damage.
You have such a classic essence, every time I see you I always think this women is the epitome of class
Wow Dr! I have waited years and years to just hear someone talk about this!

Lab Muffin Beauty Science did a great video on this a while ago!
I’m allergic to physical sunscreens and the only chemical sunscreen that doesn’t break me out causes flare ups on my cheeks if I wear them daily. I never knew about this above 3 uv index rule, I’ll check the uv index in my city from now on! thank you so much! ❤
I thought the uv index just measures the strength of UVB rays not UVA
Yeah me too
Living in Australia, yes! Check the weather and the UV index every day! It's 10 today- and it's raining!
Does this apply when you’re using retinol?
I've been wondering the same thing, where I live the uv index is almost 0 in the winter so I don't wear spf, but I don't know if that should change when I start vitamin A...
i would like to know this too
Oh yes I wondered the same, also if you have freckles from sun damage, is it ok to skip sunscreen for those morning runs where index is below 3@@mylovelybunnylife4267
Please do a makeup tutorial Dr. E.
Your makeup is sublime💕💕💕💕💕
finally someone mention this thing… i live in area where uv index is 0 or 1 pretty much every day except 1 month in summer. i appreciate people’s concern but DAMN i clearly don’t need this shit for the daily routine
This has also been addressed a while ago by dr dray. However her opinion is the opposite
th-cam.com/video/D0G4WdMNMUU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=NWiNdDYYAtZjGAH6
that is INSANE wow, our UV index at 12pm is usually anywhere between 8-12 all year round 😭
How,...I've never seen uv index go below 5-6 where I live
@@crystal_ishain the UK from October to march UV index stays 2 or below and we get minimal sunlight. Today the sun was down before 4pm😢
@@Dropletsojoy Same in Germany.. It's grey and dark. No need for SPF at all
Thank you! I live in Northern Europe and I was never share if I truly need sunscreen every day (like so many online say), even though I rarely see the sun for >6 months a year.
I tend to want to be safe & just wear it cuz I could get it wrong...
This eye makeup is so flattering 👏🏼
I live in the tropics....I slather myself with sunscreen every day.
In Indonesia, especially in the past few months, we never touch < 8. Almost every single day the uv index is 9 or 10.
So yeah, i guess it's everyday for us here.
Thanks for sharing this❤ who knows i'll live abroad one day, surely will remember thiss❤❤
watchout dray will come for u ❤

True:) I live in Finlandia where the uv-index reaches 3 only half of the year so I can happily skip sunscreen for many months. Unless the snow is reflecting a lot of rays, that is.

I read a comment from a woman who said “even when it’s dark and stormy out, I still wear sunscreen”, which I questioned and then had a zillion people tell me that there are scattered rays, even if it’s dark and stormy out. Then I tried to imagine putting on a bikini during a dark, cloudy thunderstorm and going out there to see if I end up with tan lines…🤔😜

That is true to a certain extent. Like she said, if the UV index is still above 3 on a cloudy day, wear sunscreen.
You ever try to look at the clouds, when it is cloudy, but your eyes hurt? Those are the uv rays!
i mean UV rays do literally scatter tho so that’s not untrue
@@lauryn6037 Yes. Ok a zillion and one now. Lol
I have never put so much sunscreen in my life until I moved to Sydney Australia 😅, at 28yo I realized I had a lot more fine lines especially in summer, the sun here is NO JOKE compared to where I’m from (Paris, France) where the sunrays are extremely scarce lol. I’m 30 now and I am so glad I started wearing sunscreen everyday and exposing less my face directly to the sun, and protecting my face with a hat… and this good habit paid off- a lot less fines lines and I look younger now than I did a couple of years ago 😂
but doesn’t cumulative low risk exposure still harm the skin over time? I thought the UV index only measured the chance of burninf
Yes but the same applies to other lights as well like blue light from our phones and appliances but the damage is a lot lower
It has been in use for well over 200 years, employed by a large number of people across a wide geographic range and with a consistent meaning.
irregardless
adverb US not standard
UK /ˌɪr.ɪˈɡɑːd.ləs/ US /ˌɪr.əˈɡɑːrd.ləs/
despite; not being affected by something:
I don't think children should be hit, irregardless of what they've done wrong.”
from the merriam webster dictionary
Yes someone is finally saying it! I live in Belgium during the winter our uv index is 0 or 1 max usually. Meanwhile a lot of people here are watching influencers from the other side of the world who live in a much warmer climate talk about having to wear sunscreen in winter. 😅
Isn’t that index only pertaining to UVB? UVA is constant and equally important to protect against.

You know what I never actually thought of that and I've been wearing sunscreen for like 10 years now
As a general rule, I do not wear sunscreen from october to march, unless there is snow on the ground.
Do you get sun burns at night or when its dark and cloudy?
I mean its based on UV index and not weather. Winter can have some intense UV. You CAN get sunburned in winter especially if the skies are clear and youre outside for a while. I say this as a person with lots of melanin. I wear sunscreen in winter for that reason. Running errands, maybe not. But outdoor winter activities, for sure.
The white snow is great at reflecting light.
Thank you!! I wish everyone would just say this instead! Makes much more sense!!
I live somewhere where it's rarely sunny, we get a lot of rain and heavy cloud cover. Yes when it's sunny in late spring and summer, I will wear it everywhere.
As a fair skin red head, I track UV index religiously. It has been a game changer for me and my skin.
Generally speaking I don't buy a lot of clothes or shoes anymore I have plenty, I'm shopping in my own closet,I wear scarfs when it's really cold when my neck is warm I'm warm...I like my lotion or body cream oil based and with petroleum jelly in it they are the best for dry skin in my opinion
Good video 😊
I love that you taught us how to find the UV index on my iPhone. I look at it everyday now. If I am staying inside I don’t use it under 3 and but I do still but a thin layer on if I am going to be out in the sun even at 2-3. I love that I am in control not that it is a must to slap it on thick every day. ❤
Thank you!! I live in Sweden, the UV-index is 0 everyday. I haven’t seen the sun for over 3 weeks now.
Thank you for such valuable information!! Will definitely follow this rule from now! 😊😊
Thank you for clarifying this. I live in the UK where the national health system recommends everyone takes vitamin D supplements from September to April because there isn't enough sun to produce it
Well depends on the country you're in and your work/activities. in tropical countries wearing sunscreen every day is a must
Thank you for explaining! I live in the Midwest and the UV index lately has been 0.
Tip: I'm constantly asking my smart speaker for the weather. I also always ask for the UV index while I'm getting ready so I know if I need to apply sunscreen.
FINALLY someone addressed this question!! It clarified the confusion for me 👍

Thanks Dr Shereen, this is very helpful 👍🏻
It's not just U.V as an exogenous factor that triggers melasma. Visible light especially blue light has been implicated as a contributor to hyperpigmentation, too. Therefore, wear sunscreen EVERY SINGLE DAY, especially the tinted ones which have a visible light blocking effect as well.

I’m so glad I know this now. Having to decide when to put sunscreen on is always so stressful for me, idk why I never thought to check the uv index
Thank you for saying this. I work from home and some (many) days I don’t leave the house at all so there’s no need for me to put it on.
I’m not sure I’ve ever said this before, but her cupids bow is amazing. 😂
Instantly check uv index in North of UK. Its 10am. Uv index is 0, all day lol.

I just looked at your beauty and a flawless skin❤
Please TELL us about what makeup you are wearing. Gorgeous and natural looking . LOVE the LOOK
I’m so broke this week and I ran out and I’ve been stressing about how I’m going to get more. Checking the index now. Thank you 🙏🏻
Ngl this shocked me to my core.... I'm not a skincare girl, I have to force myself to wash my face sometimes, but for the past few years I've worn sunscreen daily 99% of the time, and I've always preached to others that they need to wear it everyday. I live in London!! Have I been wasting all that sunscreen 😂
Thank you! I've literally seen videos of people say that you need to wear sunscreen even if you're not going outside at all because the lights in your home can do the same thing as the sun and I was just flabbergasted.
Yes!!!! In the UK the UV index is 0 for many months and so when people tell me I should wear sun screen I’m like nooo I really don’t need to!! I wear when the UV is 4+ but I think I’ll take your advice on doing it from 3 :)
This is helpful... UV index here in the Philippines is extremely high from 9am-3pm 😅 so I have to wear sunscreen and reapply every 2-3hours
