    Thanks for posting this... I had dairy goats. I slept in the barn sometimes when my goats were almost due. Most of the does had 2 kids. Some had only one. When that happened it was usually a little buck. Only once did I have a doe who had triplets. And, only once did I have to help, doing the "James Herriot" thing, I scrubbed my arm to the shoulder and reached in, found a leg back. I pushed the kid back in. That was hard because she didn't want that kid back!... And, --- I waited. I was very lucky because things sorted themselves out in her womb. Next contraction and a kid was born! I loved having goats! I would have raised them just to be around those darling babies. But, the delicious goat milk so, so good! (I let the kids nurse for a couple of months.)

      But, we have a plug from my other girl Meggie, who is as big as your Cami, she has been quite uncomfortable the past hour or so. I'm crossing my fingers it's soon! They have tricked me enough. Lol

      Blue Cactus Dairy Goats
      Hi Crystal, great news, Anna kidded a big buckling this afternoon around 4.30. No complications. But, she won't let him feed. We held her still for a little moment, but i don't feel long enough for him to get a big drink of colostrum. Her udder is great, but her nipples point back, everytime he goes to suckle she kicks and moves away. We tried to hold her again, that was chaos! Please help, any advise would be appreciated. Thank you, Wendy

    • @BlueCactusDairyGoats
      @BlueCactusDairyGoats  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Congrats on the healthy baby! You must be very relieved! As far as the doe not allowing him to eat, you will need to milk her and bottle feed if she won't give in. I have a doe that is very sensitive when it comes to her udder. So she is unwilling to let the babies nurse at first. I have to hold/restrain her at first until they latch. After a day she is perfectly fine though. Just takes her some time. That being said, she is not rejecting the babies, she just doesn't like her udder messed with. She's a pill to milk too!!! So is the dam rejecting her boy? Or is she being motherly in all other aspects? He should get cost rum within the first 30 minutes. So if you need to have help to restrain her and milk her out you should do so.

    Some beautiful animals. I hate to think of carrying 4 babies around inside. Just wondering? Saw on a horse birthing video how foals have this rubbery substance on their hooves to keep them from lacerating the moms insides, and it falls off after birth. Do goats have this too?

    • @BlueCactusDairyGoats
      @BlueCactusDairyGoats  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      4 would be a lot to manage, yes! I'm not sure that it's a rubbery substance on the hooves but they are definitely very soft when they come out. It is more from the fluid they are in. Once they are out in the air, the hooves will harden :)

    So after the breeding is done, how quick can I get back to milking the doe?

    • @BlueCactusDairyGoats
      @BlueCactusDairyGoats  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I separate kids from dams as early as 2 weeks old and begin to milk them at that point.

    Is it common to get all polled ?? I know you can’t breed two polled parents. Why not ?

    • @BlueCactusDairyGoats
      @BlueCactusDairyGoats  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is a 50/50 chance to get polled kids out of a polled/horned or polled/polled breeding. Breeding polled to polled is extremely controversial amongst breeders. Some believe if you breed polled to polled you will only get hermaphrodite kids. Not the case. I have bred polled/polled with great success and know many breeders that do the same. Someone told me once the kids will be born without skulls if you breed polled to polled 🤣

      Blue Cactus Dairy Goats I didn’t know that !! The way people make it seem you’d swear they would be born without skulls 😂 I love polled goats !! I wish they could all be like that!! Wouldn’t that be great !!

      Haha. It's true :). I would also love them to all be polled!

    I did an ultrasound on my boer doe, she has three....... the thing is she does not produce enough milk to take care of three, do you have any ideas of what I should do?

    • @BlueCactusDairyGoats
      @BlueCactusDairyGoats  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nature is an amazing thing. Your does body will, in normal circumstances, know she is needing to produce for 3 and supply the milk. For example, one of my does had quads one year and a single the next. She had 3 times the amount of milk needed for the quads as the she did the single. Keep a close eye and if the kids seem to not get the nutrition, pull one and bottle feed :)

    How do you decide if the buck is top quality for breeding?

    • @BlueCactusDairyGoats
      @BlueCactusDairyGoats  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well. It shows haha. You are looking for confirmation and proof in the lines. Lines should have dams with great confirmation and udder attachment as well as capacity.

    What did poled mean when u said they were all poled

    • @BlueCactusDairyGoats
      @BlueCactusDairyGoats  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Polled means naturally hornless. It's a gene they carry. Either the sire or the dam have to be polled to have polled kids.

    How many nipples does a goat have?
    looks like you are an old hand at kid delivery
    . Great video .What is a moon spot? please. Thank you.

    • @BlueCactusDairyGoats
      @BlueCactusDairyGoats  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Goats have two nipples, which are called teats. A moonspots is a circular spot on the goats coat. However, a moonspot can't be white or on white :). Thank you so much for watching!!

    • @saramarie2736
      @saramarie2736 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      polled means it was born without horns even though goats are normally horned.

    Do you wether your males so they provide the females with companionship, or do you sell them?

    • @BlueCactusDairyGoats
      @BlueCactusDairyGoats  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I wether any male that I wouldn't have in my herd to breed. Only the top quality bucks should reproduce. This guy was sold as a buck. If you have one doe then a wether could be a companion but I have many does, so wethers don't play a role in my herd:)

  • @blueapples6215

    Hi Crystal, I’ve heard the number of kids a doe will have is hereditary. Is this your experience? If it is hereditary is it passed down from dam, sire or both? What’s your experience on this subject? Thank you ❤️

    • @BlueCactusDairyGoats
      @BlueCactusDairyGoats  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know people sell them stating out of quads or triplets as it may be hereditary. In my experience it's just hit and miss. Some does give a lot of kids and some pop out singles and twins only. That's just my experience tho :)

    Isn't mama supposed to lick all that stuff off the babies. Healthy for the mama and a bonding process?

    • @BlueCactusDairyGoats
      @BlueCactusDairyGoats  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      She licks plenty of it off and bonds well with them :).

      Right, I thought about that after I posted my question. 4 babies a lot of licking required. Certainly did enjoy your video and would love to have goats. I'm 73 and so getting goats at this time in my is not smart. I enjoy watching other people and their goats. Fun.

      It Is! She is a great mama. My main concern is getting the gunk out of the face and mouth because once the umbilical cord breaks they take their first breath.
