Few threats have devastated India like the Khalistan insurgency of the 1980s and 1990s. A dark chapter that left tens of thousands dead, unleashed tanks on one of Earth's holiest places, orchestrated the most chilling terror attack in Canadian history, and silenced India's most formidable Prime Minister this movement appeared extinguished by the mid-90s, only to rise again from the ashes fueled by unresolved tensions and leap into headlines in 2023.
So what is Khalistan? Why has it resurfaced? And can fertiliser be blamed for it all?
    Well, let’s find out!

Trinitarians are inoculated from rationality, facts and logic. It is no surprise that basic reasoning is entirely lost on those that believe that the creator became one of those he created in order to save the created from his own self. Not to mention the incoherence in the scripture, never minding the creed itself.

Whereas Punjabis in India only make up about 2% of the total population yet they are overrepresented in the army (mainly Sikhs) and entertainment industry (because of their fair skin colour which Indians are mad about). But the present day government of India doesn't respect the sovereignty of Punjab, their culture, origin and their uniqueness. They basically want all of the people living within the socially constructed borders of India (yes geographical borders are a social construct) to be ruled by a Hin-dutva dictatorship that doesn't respect the uniqueness of different cultures, languages, ethnicities and races within India.

Accept their struggles and don't forget ours, Hindus and Sikhs went through Ideological warfare and lack of knowledge fueled this conflict, we are united by ideals, don't forget what happened in the past but forgive on the way to the future.
Also try being open and view things from other side of the mirror, even if you are not able to accept that, thy being in there shoes and think like them(as in people who followed their leaders like sheep ) they were just people used by other people.
God never wrote our destiny but he knows it, we make our own path he just walks with us on it and waits on the end of it. He never tells us to do good or bad because he believes in all of us but we fight in his name but he never demands it. Make sure his name spreads peace and never fear, acceptance never disconnect, respect those who walk the path they pave despite the boundary of religion and finally "karma karte raho, phal ki chinta mat karo" Jai siyaram@@Natureone585

Sikhs are an unalienable and proud part of India, and I offer my condolences to them to the horrors they faced in the past at the hands of the Congress government. Thank you Cogito for informing about this Horrible story of the Sikhs of my country.
As a Bengali Hindu I can't deny the contribution of Indira Gandhi for giving shelter to many Hindus during 1971, she is like Mother for us.
But what she had done with Sikh is inhuman, I as an Indian Hindu can't believe that this is done by our beloved PM Indira.
How could we know when nobody told us about this dark chapter, nobody gave us full information, in school we are taught about Green Revolution but nobody told us that the harmful affect of this and Punjab lost its 90% ground water, nobody told us about the harmful affects of Green revolution and nobody told us that Punjab fed the Whole India by making their own land barren, nobody told us about the Genocide of Sikhs in 1984, nobody taught us about the Killings of Sikhs during Emergency.
I am urging to my Sikh brother and sisters please don't misunderstand the Hindus of this country, we have really no knowledge about this Dark chapter, we were not taught about this things in School or College, whatever we know is in bits and pieces.
Those Sikhs Lives Lost Can't be Returned But Atleast We Indians Should Provide Sikhs Justice and Reconciliation. It's time for Hindus to repay with interest for what Sikhs had sacrificed in the past to protect Hindus.

When I became homeless in my teens, I wandered the streets until I passed by a Sikh temple and was invited in for a meal and to rest. I shared my story with them and since I had nothing else to do, I found myself going back time and time again, less often for a meal and more just to spend more time with the people who I felt had 'saved' me. But the problem is the moment anyone speaks about injustice in Punjab or against Sikhs, the government’s PR turn it into Khalistani rhetoric inviting bunch of trolls to mock and condemn all sikhs including those who don’t support the movement. This further fuels the khalistani movement. Having heard how my mom dad families lost so many of their cousins to the militancy and police encounters while growing up, sometimes its hard to swallow the pill of injustice. Sikhs agree to these points because it is a fact.
As a hindu, I donot think of sikhism as a different religion. None of the gurus ever said that. There are hindu gurus as well who say things against the vedas. If I follow such a guru, does my religion change? It doesnt. But I follow guru nanak's teachings suddenly my religion changes.
It is important both hindus and siklhs understand that their dharma is very very same.
Also it is hindus that are poorer in the indian state. It is those bihari marginal labourers working in jat sikh fields who are the suppressed people. But nobody wants to talk about that?
Hindutva movement never sought to suppress sikhs. Hindutva movement sees sikhs as marathas who fought against foreign powers for the protection of dharma.
You can watch any pro right wing hindutva video about sikh gurus. Each of them is heavily respected like Gods. Donot associate hindutva with some random dumbass on internet. The largest hindutva influencers have always worshipped sikh gurus. The title of a guru isnt given to just anyone. The vocabulary itself is a reflection of the society.
The sikhs also reciprocate that. In both sides some dont.

Honestly my friend without being Indian but having similar issues and views with you i am gonna say; you are not wrong for feeling like that. Unfortunately there are 2 huge issues with situations like these:
      A) On a social level political motives for creating hate using the rational but not always accurate fear of future discrimination and assimilation.
      B) On a personal level, fear and pride.
Honestly India much like Europe should've never been 1 country or 2 or 3 or 4, there are so many different cultures and histories. That said, they should much like Europe, should be and must be united, to the best of their ability, because they have common experiences and a common recent history. In addition China on the north is a pretty big issue for the area and not being united will lead to more loss of freedom.

Covid-19 issues left hundreds of delivery drivers stranded at the ferry crossing, which would take them to France usually, and they were not allowed to leave their lorries. The Sikh community came and provided food free of charge to the drivers and made sure they had essentials.

I am a British born Sikh jatt now living in Canada. I am amazed how many Sikh youth in Canada blindly support the Khalistan movement while either never having been to India or being born in Canada.
I hope that this documentary, rings home why Khalistan as a movement arose, but why also the Sikhs and Punjabi’s generally living in India are NOT in support of an independent Khalistan state.
They want to be an integral part of India, while at the same time having a degree of autonomy
The ignorant fuelling of Sikh jatts in the west, does not help the cause.
What would help is the push for a diplomatic truth and reconciliation, which pushes for increased powers for Punjab and reignites a wider geographical area identified as Punjab as was allocated in 1947.
Punjab needs the type of investment the modi govt is doing in Kashmir, which has quelled the discontent there. Punjab needs that type of investment to give the youth a better future in India. India is now the 5th largest economy in the world. There will be a time in the next 20-30 years that the Indian diaspora will want a return or the youth of India will no longer look to the west to live and earn. The best solution, with the diverse cultures, was to have a proper federation with states rights, as proposed in the Anandpur Sahib Resolution, for all states, as is in the USA. But ego and dictatorship took precedence.

The more I watched this video, honestly, the more it broke my heart. I am an Indian Hindu, and I have grown up with a lot of respect and adoration for all communities in the country be it the Sikhs or the Jains. I had absolutely zilch of an idea that Sikhs are somehow being pressured to assimilate or give up their unique identity in one way or another by the Indian government. India is not a country which has ever been 'uniform in identity' ever in its history. Even during the ancient period of the Indus Valley civilization, we had three to four ethnic groups inhabiting our land. I also bow my head in respect to the Sikhs who must be having SO MUCH faith in this land and its culture, that despite so many atrocities they are still peacefully negotiating and actually willing to cooperate with India in every sphere. This is one community that has given a lot to us, and we cannot allow them to be marginalized or be tainted as the villain. I don't care about foreign Sikhs, but the Sikhs who live in the Indian state of Punjab deserve to have their demands HEARD and discussed. India is a union of states, not a Hindu colonization of non-Hindu subjects and I hope it doesn't turn out that way ultimately because of political powers in this country. At the social level, sat sri akal to all my Sikh brethren, we respect you as a unique social group with a common root in our civilization.

During the riots of 1984, more than just Delhi had been affected. In my city of Kolkata (back them it was Calcutta), the local Congress leadership alongside several Congress supporters had organised large teams to basically hunt down any Sikhs they found. Now back then Calcutta had far more Sikh Punjabis than now, since back then the Sikhs formed the base of our taxi and bus systems, working as drivers and mechanics. I still remember how my father told the stories to me, about how the streets fell silent after the news broke on Doordarshan (the only tv channel at that time) about Mrs. Gandhi's death. She may have been a partial dictator, but again remember she was EXTREMELY popular among the poor and underprivileged, for being a sort of "messiah figure" as a dedicated 'socialist'.
So anyways, the next day news broke out about some rioting across the city, though most of it was controlled because West Bengal was under the CPI(M) back then (the Communist Party of India - Marxist). However, my grandmother and a friend of hers, while returning home from work, found that in Dhakuria (southern Calcutta), a mob had stopped a school bus and were intent on burning it down along with its driver and all the kids (schoolgirls from a nearby girls' school), because the driver was a Sikh! Now my grandmother literally jumped onto the bus entrance and started shouting "BURN ME FIRST AND THEN BURN THE KIDS", while her friend rushed to our home back then, and brought my grand uncle, and then he calmly negotiated with the mob leaders and managed to save the bus and the kids, by explaining how the kids had done nothing wrong, and that the bus driver would need to take them home safely, and so on (he had that ability to defuse situations, you can expect that from someone who got a Ph.D under Jan Tinbergen himself). My grandmother later narrated how the driver was shivering in fear when the mob were shouting about burning him, but she managed to hold them long enough for grand uncle to come and defuse the situation. Now she was an old timer member of the CPIM too, you can expect this level of insane heroism from their cadres of back then. I always feel rather proud of how she managed to save those children and the driver all along. However, the sad part would be that most Sikhs would eventually leave Calcutta, due to many reasons like growing urban unemployment and strict price/wage controls under the CPIM government. Still, atleast I can say with some pride that my grandmother helped save a fellow brother in our beloved nation ☺️🇮🇳

Frighteningly enough, its not just a problem unique to Punjab. There is supposed to be a restructuring of constituencies, which no successive governments have still dared to implement, because it will strip away legislative representation in central government from regions that have successfully lowered their population, at the same time reward the regions that have gloriously failed at reducing fertility rates and population. Everyone knows that it is a massive conundrum if they touch, could terribly destabilize and alienate and be like a punishment to states that have performed better and states in India have as much of distinct individual identity as religious communities have.

As someone who is also currently deep into research on this topic for a video that focuses more on the modern Canadian-Indian conflict and some questions regarding international law, I enjoyed watching your video and I think you did a great job at capturing the complexity of this issue. There are a few things I’d like to note:
24:07 I think it's more accurate to say that Bhindranwale mainstreamed violence rather than introduced it. There have been numerous violent riots/uprisings in the Punjab and beyond in the 1950s and 1960s between Sikhs and Hindus. And there were some small, disorganised groups of militant Sikhs active before - but it was Bhindranwale that popularised this militant approach and laid the foundation of the crisis to come in the 80s.
28:44 I think it's also important to point out that at least officially, the Indian government desperately tried to not portrait this as a conflict between Sikhs and Hindus. This is also a reason for why Operation Blue Star was in part led by (clean-shaven) Sikhs, as you mention. Nonetheless, tensions between Sikhs and Hindus were enormous by that time and you describe the sad results of that in the video.
56:55 I really like the ending of your video. Whether the Khalistan movement will reignite will definitely depend on how the Indian government will choose to react to Sikh demands and economic woes in the present, but also on how it will choose to deal with the past and the incredibly tragic period of the 80s and 90s.
I’m sure your video will attract a lot of angry comments from both sides eventually, but that’s usually the hallmark of a good video in my opinion. Well done!

13:43 it wasn't called Tamil Nadu in 1956, it was Madras state till 1969, renaming to Tamil Nadu only happened when Congress lost power in the state and the first Dravidian government (post-independence at least) came to power.
Also maps used in the video till this point at least seemed anachronistic to me, from the Lahore resolution till 1946-47, Muslim League and Jinnah were steadfast in trying to get all of Punjab and Bengal, because both the provinces had an overall muslim majority (Pakistan was supposed to include all provinces with a muslim majority), but as you said they are also very mixed, with some districts being non-muslim majority including many of the major cities, while the INC position was generally no partition until at least independence (oversimplified), they certainly weren't willing to give up those provinces in their entirety and were still trying to seek a united India with all the provinces till at least after the 1946 provincial elections. Also Mountbatten's mandate was more the exit of Britain from India and less partitioning it to my understanding (but that they'd have to do some sort of partition was apparent under the previous viceroy Lord Wavell whose initiatives for an interim government along with the cabinet mission plan by London failed), partitioning British India into two states wasn't the only plan they considered.
Anyway all that aside I think saying that the Akalis sided with the INC is sanitizing and simplifying it, Jinnah tried to court them a lot and gave them many promises too, which is probably why Nehru would've gone that far to court them. By the time it was apparent a partition would happen, the Akalis and Sikh princely state rulers conspired to ethnically cleanse the muslim population from their side of the border with tacit approval of the local INC leaders, which is why unlike West Bengal today, Punjab has an insignificant muslim minority outside a single district (which just so happened to be ruled by a muslim ruler during the partition), if the muslims of our side of Punjab remained like they did in West Bengal, it would've been more difficult for them to consolidate a majority sikh state.
