I agree with "doing it yourself." I spent years waffling about the paths I wanted in my garden, then one day just bought a sack of concrete mix and a pre-made plastic form and started casting my own pavers. Just like mixing cake batter (only a bit heavier!).

Your scripting, production, editing and presentation skills are just superb, Alexandra. This is one of the best videos you've done. You wove footage of the three gardens together beautifully, making for a most enjoyable video. This is local area for me, so it was interesting to hear your take on Australian rural gardens, styles and plants. It's been a hot summer indeed. We currently have bushfires in Victoria, 60 k from where we live, the heat has been so strong. We are hoping for some cooler weather. My summer flowering plants are getting rather tired.

Hope you get the cooler weather - it is always rather nice, provided it doesn't go on for too long. Back in England we have had temperatures of 18 degrees C in February! Bizarre

So encouraging to see these mature and beautiful gardens. It's always interesting to me to see what plants are growing in gardens that are located in quite literally the opposite end of the earth. And to see the same or similar plants which I have growing in my own garden is really cool.
I do think gardeners are an ingenious lot and admire the creativity and effort that goes into building a house stone by stone or a beautiful garden enclosure. Well done

I especially loved the house surrounded by its wide varanda with the yellow paintwork, not that I particularly liked the colour but it did do exactly as you said & gave a lovely, subtle harmony to the house & garden. Watching your videos in Lisbon, Portugal & so it was a treat to these Victorian gardens as we also get long dry summers here too!

My brother and his family live in the hills outside Melbourne on a property they bought some years ago that already had gorgeous established gardens.
He's a firefighter in Melbourne and has had a review of the property done by bush firefighters and due to the threat of fire from so much drought, he has decided it's best to remove a few trees that are too close to the house. They'd prefer not to, but for safety reasons.
The lovely gold and light yellow colour are used a lot on the lovely wrap-around porches and fences in front of the homes. I've not seen that shade of colour used in any other country.
All their water for drinking, bathing or watering the garden is collected from rainwater by the gutters on all the structures on the property and is stored in large tanks. The ponds/damn are from rain that drains from the road or downhill into the pond and is water for cattle/livestock/wildlife and is also used in the event of a fire. They have no wells and his home is not on city water.

It must be a very worrying time for them at the moment - I hear that the fires are bad this year. I have various friends who live on the hills outside Melbourne, some of whom have European trees on their properties (dating back from the 20th century or even earlier sometimes). Apparently these trees don't burn as quickly or as explosively as the eucalypts, so they have helped protect against the spread of fire a little. I hope your brother's family stays safe this fire season.
@@TheMiddlesizedGarden It is concerning and the news has shown that koalas have been decimated in the current fires. Very sad.
There is no fire close to them at the moment but my sister in law has her phone with her at all times to receive urgent messages if a fire starts. She said some days the fire warnings are so severe that she's kept the family's photo albums in the car, ready for a fast getaway.
I'm in Canada and don't have those concerns. I lived in England many years ago, enjoying the gardens, especially the roses. That experience has been the main influence for my gardens today.

an excellent idea and advise regarding design and color , my house brick are very old and has an untick texture, a blend of green and rustic yeloo, is well the grouted of my brick are red, so i work around those colors in My outside garden as well when I re do my house roof i used red shingles and the flowers colors team follows those house colors as well the patio stones .

I agree with you about trees ,my garden is not large but I've six large trees .I wanted lots of shade in June July August in my Algarve garden. And after 30 yrs they are fantastic.
Mature trees are so beautiful - and irreplaceable.

I thought squirrels 🐿 were a problem, but I do believe Kangaroo 🦘 would be even more challenging.
Yes, I'm quite relieved not to have to deal with kangaroos, though apparently they sometimes pluck weeds out of the borders to eat.

I can report that they have. There has actually been much more rain on all of them than is usual at this time of year, so the risks have dropped alot.

Hope you enjoyed your visit to my home state of Victoria. I assume one of those gardens is in the glorious Dandenongs. I am currently living in Colorado where the gardening is totally different from my beloved Victoria. Thank you for sharing.
The gardens are in the Macedon ranges, but the Dandenongs are so beautiful too - I didn't go there this time, but have been in the past. Thank you for commenting.
Is it the case I can be non observant, at times lazy minded? Yes, I can. Only, many of the designs in the video work to bring together different elements such as; the house, hard and soft landscaping, features, boundries and beyond in harmony to give a seamless overall look. I realise now many of the best designs are so good but not so dull that, at first they go unnoticed, slipping past the front part of the thinking mind entering then into one's subconcious, unless pointed out by someone having 'the eye'.

I love hydrangeas but already have established shrubs and there’s no more room for them.
Quick question not related to video
I have a hebe ( magic summer ) which is purple in leaf colour. The centre is all opened up and scruffy looking . Can hebe be pruned to correct this problem ?
Yes! I live in Melbourne, and have several different Hebes. They are great space fillers. Prune back your hebe, probably a couple of times a year. They are as tough as old boots, and will bounce back readily after a prune. Good luck!

Sad to say local Councils in Australia give no protection to trees. Trees will be removed on a whim (a branch might fall) and since the 2010 bushfires a 10/30m rule has been introduced which in effect means people can remove any tree etc within that radius. We have a neighbour ("environmental vandal") who has been allowed to basically denude his acre-plus block. Trees are now only protected by private individuals who value the benefits. Councils do not protect trees. East Gippsland Council was going to go out in the night and remove a stand of trees which had flying foxes roosting (plan was to cut them down while the flying foxes were away) but thankfully locals prevented such destruction for now. Thankfully there are some people who do value trees and have beautiful properties (as featured in this video) because of mature trees. Gardens are becoming less valued here in Australia. The big box stores like Bunnings appear to have an overabundance of petunias! Sorry, this nearly turned into a rant!
I think we have many of the same problems, so I sympathise.
These are not my idea of middle sized gardens. These are parks.
Yes, I agree- they are bigger than the gardens I would normally feature, partly because they're in Australia where there is so much more space. But sometimes its just nice to see a beautiful garden, whatever the size

This video is spoiled by the hurried pace.... So unpleasant to listen to.... Perhaps an inexperienced presenter who would need to speak in a more acceptable calm manner.
