- Having trouble shifting gears? It may be time to change the gear oil in your transmission. While you are at it, you might as well change out your transfer case and differential oils as they also probably need new lube. In this video I will show and explain how to change out the various gear oils as specified in the Toyota 4Runner factory service manual. All quantities, crush washers, oil weights, and torque specs in order to help your 2nd Gen Toyota driveline run cool and smooth. Hope this helps.

Been watching a lot of your videos, just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to make such detailed videos with all the specifications. This is like a treasure trove of information for any current and future second gen 4runner owners. Excited to see some more maintenance and off road videos this summer. Cheers!
Hey thank you for your support. There is always something to do on these things but they sure are fun!
The service manual definitely does say 75W-90 GL-4 or GL-5 for the manual transmissions, (I just checked as well) but I've read a lot of information regarding the additives in GL-5 attacking the synchromesh material in manual gearboxes, thus I intend to use GL-4 in the transmission only. Although honestly, I think it's a little late for my gearbox, some of the synchros are a getting a bit tired. Thanks for the fantastic video! Your channel is similar to mine in many ways.
Yeah same story for ours. We are over 450,000km on it. At this point, as long as there is something oil like in there I think she'll run haha. I'll check out your channel thanks!
Might have to change mine soon 😅 240,000 miles strong
Nice!! Keep her goin'!
Same 4Runner as mine, with R150F Trans. I used Lucas Synthetic Gear Oil in the Gallon container. Did this about 6 years ago. The transmission shifts more smooth. 320k. Did one axle reboot using oem boots, using Redline CV2 grease. Nice mentioning the torque settings.
Awesome! We are about to replace both CVs and the control arm bushings. Just need good weather and time.
Thanks a lot guys for these awesome videos... I recently bought a 1993 4runner Stick shift 4x4 and in the process of restoring the vehicle. Your videos are very detailed
Hey thanks a lot! They are a lot of fun!
@@roughcutsgarage I have done the following
1. Full front suspension - Shocks, CV, Steering Dampner, Tierods, Upper balljoints
2. Oil, Coolant Flush, Brake Flush, Diff oil Change
3. Spark plugs
I have to do timing belt and transmission fluid change next
Anything else that you suggest to keep the rig in good condition
@@theendlesshighways Thats awesome! Could check the wheel bearings to see what condition they are in. Always a good idea to grease them up too. Unless anything is leaking then you should be good to go. Fuel filter and Air Filter is another good one to do too. Got vids for a bunch of those if you need em. Good work!
Not mandatory by any means but things I like to spend money on that I think are important from a drivers perspective are bright headlights, good wipers, and good tires if you have the extra cash. May save a life or get you out of a bad situation.
@roughcutsgarage thanks a lot for the advise and your guidance..... was always skeptical on the head gasket issue bit I guess taking proper care helps avoid the issue
Very thorough video, awesome work!
Thanks!
Must feel good to have those all taken care of. Next is the grease gun!
Yeah she shifts way better now.
Do you have Links for the washers ?
Yes, in the description below.
