This is a re-recording of the lesson I gave for the Toki Pona VR community in meetup number 24! Thanks to everyone who came for the great questions, and for the appreciation after the fact. I recorded it again because I felt I could do a better job- and it came out much better! I still have room to improve though! Also, I am ordering a pop filter for my headset, I swear
This lesson focuses on mi and sina, and various example sentences involving them, plus around a dozen other words and their glyphs.

I didn't even know there were symbols, I just started two days ago. mi li toki e Nijon toki, so I see them like kanji. (is that how I say "I speak Japanese"?)

my classmates stole my notes and only gave them back after two weeks, so I'm learning this language no one knows. but as I reached it I got more fascinated by how the simplicity of this language changes your brain chemistry and it makes you happier and helps you think in a healthy manner 😊😁

Funny translation things to keep in mind is that the verbs can be adjectives too, so "mi moku" can easily mean "I am food" instead of "I eat", which is uncommon but not an impossible thought, especially for those being chased by dinosaurs.

As everyone else, I love how you're showing sitelen pona but something I've noticed is that you speak with diphthongs very often, such as being pronounced [tʰowkij] and being pronounced [mowkʉw] and also reducing final a to schwa such as and becoming [sinə] and [pʰownə], which technically shouldn't happen and isn't fully correct, but it's probably fine since we can all understand you.
This is completely true, but a few notes about it:
- Whenever I'm saying toki pona words between English ones, I can't help but pronounce the toki pona with my english accent, lmao.
- Toki Pona allows for this variation! While the sounds are defined strictly, they may be realized loosely and still understood/validly be part of the language. For example, Japanese speakers I've met often pronounce "sina" closer to "shina" because of the "shi" sound in Japanese being more familiar than "si!"
- lastly, my pronunciation is better when I'm just speaking toki pona, hahahaha. Check it out:

@@Emile.gorgonZolaIt's hard. When I'm in a foreign country trying to speak their local language and I use English words they share (like "refrigerator" or "motor"), I can't help but say them in their accent, because my brain is focusing so hard on pronouncing the new words correctly.
The same applies to when I'm speaking English and use a word from a different language. I'll use Gorgonzola as an example, shall I? I obviously *can* pronounce it in a serviceable Italian accent, but only in isolation. Each language has its own cadence and meter. To shift from one to the other is very unnatural to most of us.
It might be easier for people who were raised multilingual, but for those of us who weren't, it's a struggle you could try to recognise.

I really like how you taught the sitelen pona along with it. I never really learned sitelen pona along with toki pona and to this day I still know a lot less sitelen pona than I do toki pona, but with this new series people can learn both

I'm just starting to learn toki pona and I'm really looking forward to watching the following videos. It's super easy to follow. I was a little confused by the hieroglyphs (?) but I think they will make it easier to learn somehow. Also I immediately saw toki as being a mouth that emits sound so that could be a great mnemonic. Please keep up the good work!

I see the "Toki" symbol as an open mouth with the words it is emitting being symbolised by the three "emitter" lines hence its association with language and communication.

i decided to learn this two weeks ago and then my sister wanted to join me. i started including her with my lessons but she was clearly struggling very hard. (i think this comes down to i have a lot of linguistics knowledge so i could progress faster than her)
she eventually hit a breaking point after ~10 days and i kind of realized where i went wrong
after finishing on my own i went to reddit to ask where to go and someone said you and i decided to check it out and i think this is perfect for her. you fully explain things in a way that i think will help it click for her.

I've seen a lot of interpretations for the glyph of Toki so I thought I'd share mine. It kind of looks like a person's head whose brain is lighting up with ideas. Words can't happen without ur brain thinking of what to say. I think that incapsulates the language well. Just a person lighting up with ideas and ready to communicate. Also ur an excellent teacher !!

Don't stress yourself to pick up everything lesson by lesson before you move on! They're meant to work with one another. Reviewing two lessons worth of stuff at a time may seem daunting, but it's only about 20 words and 2-3 grammar things - it's not bad!

Imagine someone tries to reassure their friend like 'sina suli' (you're important), only for the friend to think they just called them tall for no reason.
You probably wouldn't just say "sina suli" in that case.
I would express multiple separate things in this example:
"sina suli tawa mi, tawa jan poka sina, tawa mama sina." "You are important to me, to those near you (your friends), and to your parents."
The use of tawa preposition helps, because it portrays the "suli" as a matter of perspective rather than a literal fact- it's much more clear that the meaning is "important" this way!

To me, the symbol for "toki" looks like an open mouth emitting sound.
This is helping me create my own language. It is interesting but I don’t think I can get as simple as toki pona Thank you.
You might be surprised!
Here's a tip: there's a common exercise people use to get better at Toki Pona, where they intentionally remove words from the language and see if they can still communicate! I know for a fact you could remove pan and kili very easily, and you could remove all the specific color words but leave kule. You could remove tomo and use poki instead, too.
These things aren't identical - but they're more than close enough!

I started learning toki pona and sitelen pona with your course on Friday, March 1. I have not even finished it yet, I am at lesson 6 at the moment. But last night, I dreamed not only in toki pona (and real toki pona) but also in sitelen pona. This is so amazing. It is of course also due to the very character of this special and amazing language, but also to your great way of teaching. Real language dreams have usually only happened to me after years and years of learning a language, not after 5 days. This is so crazy and wonderful. Nasa a! 😃
The symbol for toki is a mouth speaking. The circle is the mouth and the lines are the speech projecting out
This is certainly a good way to remember it, but the way it's drawn, it's just a circle- more like the word ijo! uta, the word for mouth, is drawn with the bottom half of the circle.

That's basically it!
The circle is similar to the word ijo, or thing. The lines are seen on a few other symbols- kalama, sona, pana- they indicate that something is being given or provided. kalama is basically uta + these lines. sona is lipu + these lines. pana is luka + these lines. toki is probably the loosest of these, but it's ijo + these lines!
About the “toki” word, I remember it because it sounds like the word “talking” or “talk”, and the symbol looks like a person (circle) speaking (lines)

This is the universal language!
I think many people can successfully learn Toki Pona- it's apt to the task of being a universal language. But I hope it stays as something to enjoy and have fun with- I feel like something would be lost if people learned toki pona for its utility, rather than because they find the idea interesting.

this whole conlang really just feels like caveman talk and tbh that's exactly why I want to learn it

Trouble is, there actually is a word for mouth, uta! and its symbol is not a circle. It looks more like, you know, a mouth lol. You can also see it in the word kalama, meaning sound!
Aside, it would actually be "jan kule" since adjectives follow the word they modify in Toki Pona!
I read the bottom as “6 - sin a” (six minus sine of a)
It's like pointing your right index finger at somebody- "You!"
Just so you know, mama in georgian means male perant, while the female equivilant is associated with the sound /d/.
And in sinhala "mama" is 1st person singular. So mama doesnt necessarily sounds like female parent, it all depends where you come from

You said that lape looks like someone lying on their back. Ion English grammar, it should be laying on their back. You said laying on their back. To lay is transitive. To lie is intransitive. In tiki pona, a verb can be both transitive and intransitive based up which auxiliary is used, but in English, to lay and to lie are different.
Fair point! That said, two things:
- Admittedly, I'm not gonna stop making this mistake. In the southern US, lying on your back is valid. English, and language in general, has a fun way of changing by locale.
- Analyzing toki pona's words with parts of speech can be misleading to beginners, which is why I only do so with respect to toki pona's grammatical positions! Otherwise, you end up with weird and specific boxes that imply you could only use a word a certain way in a certain position- when in reality, all meanings of a word are possible to reference in essentially all positions. For example, "mi anpa e ona" can be read "I defeated them"; but I could easily later refer to ona as "ona anpa"- them (who is defeated). The word didn't change, only our understanding did.

There are a few toki pona keyboards out there! If you look into "Ajemi", there is an input method for Windows that spits out the sitelen pona- if you have a font installed!

That would be pretty cool! But it isn't all that big of a deal- for Toki Pona, being a native speaker wouldn't be so different from simply speaking it for a long time, or I believe that is true, due to the accessibility of the language.
so mi toki can mean i’m talking. but if you wanted to be more specific could you say me toki jan to say I’m talking to someone?
You're almost right! You also want the preposition "tawa", meaning to/for. "mi toki tawa jan", "I speak to someone."
If you wanna get really abstract about it, "mi toki jan" is "I people-talk", which cooould mean "I talk to a person"- it's just very, very unclear about it. Like, talking to a person is one among so many kinds of people-talking, right?

I’ve seen people write suli as complete triangle, and lili with a flat line underneath, are there more ways of writing it?
There are lots of ways to write both! The most common way for suli is the V-ish shape, and lili does the same but very small. But there are alternate scripts which use different symbols entirely to represent the same words. One of these is called "linja pona", which I think has the glyph you described!
