- Rescue of bird frozen to fence.
While feeding my horses on New Year's morning I noticed a solitary finch perched upon the steel fence near the horse water tank. The tank is heated to keep it from freezing. It is not uncommon for birds to drink from the heated tank. Apparently this unfortunate bird had gotten its feet wet and, while making its exit, had become frozen to the fence in the prevailing near zero Idaho temperatures. First, I attempted to warm the feet of the frightened bird by pressing my palm against both the fence and the bird's feet, while also gently restraining the bird's flapping wings. It then seemed that warming the bird's feet with my warm breath would bring quicker success. Gentle sideways motion with my finger and thumb brought freedom for the frightened bird and a smile of satisfaction to my face... a delightful way to start a new year.

It's not for balancing your phone horizontally it, but I guess that is a good thing and that is pretty cool, but the main idea is that he saved a bird's life.

Speaking as a vegetarian, eating an animal is not the same as being cruel to it.

Is cruel seeing the bird and doing nothing? Is cruel seeing the bird and torturing it, antagonizing it? If compassion is helping the bird, then I guess everything else is being cruel?
That's a chunk of what's wrong in this world. Some serial killer can have a dog or cat and love it, doesn't change the fact he is a hateful bastard, while someone of kind heart to all humans will be treated like the serial killer or worse by fellow humans if he mistreats (or even is thought of misstreating) an animal.

I can't for the life of me remember who made it, but i remember seeing a video of a youtuber asking who disliked their videos, and then why they did so. If it were done for this video the replies would have been shit like "I didn't like his moustache" "I couldn't understand him" "The video wouldn't load fast enough". It opened my eyes to how truly idiotic some human beings are. I couldn't even conceive of such things being grounds to bother disliking a video.

No, birds are not actually that fragile. Rabbits, especially young rabbits, however, are.
Most likely the bird perched in a distant tree, calmed down, and went on with its life.

abookl - You're probably correct. I checked with my sister who puts alot of heart into knowing and feeding little feathered critters; she thought it looked more like a finch than a young sparrow.
Definitely a House Finch. I can tell by the flight calls, not just the plumage. Now if she can live past the heart attack of being handled, she'll go on to breed this Spring. :)

BadlyDrawnFrog - I'm not sure what scenery you got from the video, but Idaho is a beautiful state. Our little place is in rural Caldwell, from where we can see the beauty of both Southwest Idaho and Eastern Oregon.
