But even two days before her death at 96 years, she wouldn't let you in the kitchen, while she was cooking. "This is my area, go somewhere else!"
WithSweetTea Yeah, all a matter of perspective and preference. Do you want to be treated like one of them? Or do you want to keep your distance.
To me, if the other family asks you to do some work for them, that means they at least trust you, and feel comfortable enough to tell you to do something for them. So it shows that kind of closer bond.

Ayu Umi: I've never viewed it that way. When my grandparents gave us chores when we went to visit, it wasn't a negative, we were helping them do things they either couldn't do, or would have a harder time doing. It's respectful to them.
I remember visiting my paternal grandparents before they died. They lived out in New Mexico. It was gorgeous. We'd visit parks and go hiking with them cus they were really into traveling. All my grandparents are dead, they died when I was young (my parents are in their mid 60s and I'm almost 20, yes they had me in their mid forties). I can't stress enough about hanging with your grandparents. I miss mine all the time.
i don’t even have the memories with my grandpa on my dad’s side, and my grandma never put me to work. she was always helping us especially when my family moved into the house we live in now and even when her hip was hurting due to chemo.

bonnie Moony Elderly people tend to sleep earlier and wake up before dawn. My grandpa, 83, sleeps around 9 pm and wake up around 2/3 am. He is exercising, reading some accounting related journals, having breakfast before he goes to work at uni at 8. And he droves himself.

Cik Pessimist Introvert im the same way. I live in America and men arent like that! Either they are polite and kind like he is but not manly and capable of taking care of themselves or they are strong and capable but rude and ignorant. Jun has single handedly shown me that Ill never find someone as good as Jun unless i move to another country with different morals 😭
I work at a paint store and I handle all the stains there. I would recommend your grandpa bring in a door from his cabinet for the store to match the wood stain to. Then he would need to sand down the area he plans on staining until it is basically bare wood because the sealant on the wood will prevent anything from staining the wood currently. Once he has done that I would recommend going with a stain like ZAR. It doesn't dry very fast but it is a lot prettier and doesn't smell as bad as Minwax. Also, to apply the stain, use an old rag like a t-shirt to rub the stain on. Let the stain set for about 10 minutes then wipe off any excess with the rag. If you don't wipe it off then it won't dry for several hours and won't give a durable and lasting stain. You might have to ask the paint store which sheen of polyurethane you should apply on top in order to match the current glossiness. Hope your grandpa gets his cabinets back to looking new again! Love you guys!

I used to be freaked out from worms but after seeing you both, I realised I was just being silly. So much to learn
Sharif Sircar Worms creep me out but I care for them a lot. It's weird. They're innocent little creatures that don't deserve to be squished or chopped in half but they scare me. There was a worm on the footpath at school so after freaking out I moved the little thing into some soil.
pinkmoth I remember when I was gardening one day and it was my first time seeing one in person, I just moved away way back like it was some kind of spider, I had been freaked out since then. Until I watched this video that is.

Dialect is correct, but in American English, it's usually used in association with striking regional differences in *word usage* rather than simply accent; so for example, if people call pizza "pie" in some area, that would be brought up as a dialect difference, more so than an accent difference, where as accent differences would refer more to the way that Rachel was chopping some words and had slightly more exaggerated intonation than normal. Unless you were talking about her usage of some words that weren't standard to you! If that's the case, I'm curious what regional words she was using that were difficult to understand!
Tl;dr - accent and dialect are both correct here, though accent is slightly more associated with pure accent, and dialect is slightly more associated with differences in word choice
mrahzzz does America have different definitions for those words? You might say they are completely unrelated in my language: the word accent is only used for non-native speakers. Jun has an accent when he speaks English - it's not his mothertongue and thus he's got a japanese accent while speaking English. Rachel on the contrary speaks a dialect. She's speaking in her mothertongue but her language is influenced by some regional customs. So according to my mothertongue the only correct word for Rachel is "dialect". Rachel would have an accent while speaking Japanese though.
As for my personal problem with the dialect: it weren't the regional words. I rather had a hard time understanding her at all because her pronunciation was unclear and non-standard (or she chopped words? I don't even know what she did with the words...). So basically I couldn't even tell what words she used ^^. For example, I had to rewind twice to be able to understand her "don't judge me" when she was talking about not showering. And I'm familiar with the "don't judge me" expression.
Yup, I knew I was accepted in the family of my girlfriend when her parents asked me for help with chores... ☺️

Reminds me of my Grandma and Grandpa's house in Rossmoyne Ohio. (near Deer Park) My Grandpa had a huge vegetable garden in the backyard and we'd help anytime he asked. He taught us to wear a cabbage leaf under our hats to keep cool in the sun. Miss him so much.

Love your Papa, reminds me of my late grandpa, Pops who had one tooth and smoked like a chimney and had a wicked sense of human. We lost him to soon when I was about 14 yo. He'd be a hundred plus now but miss him still.
