I really enjoy your reactions to Pink Floyd. You see I'm a huge Pink Floyd fan since the early 70s, when they were really starting to be known in the U.S. They are a phenomenal band that creates the most passionate, emotion filled music you'll ever hear from a Rock band. Listeners to Pink Floyd FEEL their music as much as listen to it.
The lady singing here is the incredible Clair Torry, a 25 year old unknown British singer that Pink Floyd contracted to do this one song. They told her what they wanted, and they suggested that she think about death and horror,... and then go into the studio and improvise something over the music. She did 3 takes and Pink Floyd used a blend of all three on the recording.
I think you would really enjoy 'Comfortably Numb',... a Classic Pink Floyd song from The Wall album. The studio version is incredible, and the live performances are simply off the charts! And there are many live performances of the song, one of the most iconic is from their 1994 Pulse Concert. Many have said David Gilmours guitar solo from that song, from that Pulse concert, was the "Greatest Guitar Solo of All Time",... quite an endorsement.
I'll be looking for more PF, thanks!

Clare Torry knocked so many socks off of folks with this studio recording, performed after only a couple run-throughs with minimal suggestions and instructions from the band members. She's immortal now. There are several female vocalists who've done pretty good versions, but Clare's is the original and the others are simply following her footsteps.

My father passed away last December. He was 70 years old. He has been a pianist and musician all of his life. I’m 30 years old and grew up with my aunt and my dad together listening to Pink Floyd and playing music. I haven’t listened to PF for a while now but just went back to it. That song especially makes me cry so much… I don’t even usually cry, it’s very rare. It not just makes me cry but makes me feel so connected with my father. It is so special. I don’t even exaggerate, it’s just happening like that.

Great Gig in the Sky is about death and a persons natural reactions to it. The first part is denial then rage and finally acceptance. The singer's name is Clare Tory and she opened her soul and let it bleed in this song. She performed two complete takes, the second one more emotional than the first. David Gilmour asked for a third take, but halfway through Torry stopped, feeling she was getting repetitive and had already done the best she could.

And I am not frightened of dying
Any time will do, I don't mind
Why should I be frightened of dying?
There's no reason for it, you've gotta go sometime

This song has such a common thread at least to me. The man talking at the beginning sets the theme. And then the haunting soulful voice seems to take us through the universal human experience of death. At first, she fights it, tries to resist, refuses to believe it. Then as reality sets in she is overwhelmed with grief over an un finished life. Later as she seems to finally accept it, she begins to feel melancholy peace, and a new appreciation of life. Beutiful.

Yes, Miss Sarah this is an emotional song simply because Pink Floyd digs deep into thew farthermost recesses of your inner core to grab your soul and take it on a universal journey of events and places you've never experienced only to land you safely back onto terra firma. Enjoyed much your reaction as it gives me a refreshed perspective on Floyd music as opposed to my teen years in growing up listening to Floyd records and concerts. Your genuine reaction does amaze me on how you yung'uns bridge the great divide in genera, culture and race in proving us all as one. The history of this song, the band wanted a singer to sing a song that portrays "death". They hired this lady, who never heard of Pink Floyd and when she listened to their songs didn't like them. BUT the band was so nuts over her singing they did this in one take!

You go young person,..you go,..its such a joy seeing the reaction ya'll have to this old music,..I use to think,..it was just us when we were young, because of the time we were living in,.the times now,..I wasn't sure this music would touch ya'll like it did us ,..but I see it pretty much is breaking through,..and I pray it will stay with you,.and half century from now, that you'll still be struck by it and listening to it as we have,..keep going,..Godspeed, Peace ✌

Yeah, it's just oldies rock and roll.
The longer I live, the more I feel blessed I grew up in the 1970s listening to this kind of music. And these Floyd tunes just barely skim the surface. Like that filmy outer layer of an onion before you get to the tasty layers within.
