Nice reaction, too many Floyd fans telling you it's the wrong version, or you have to listen to the whole album in order etc etc While thats true , you can still enjoy live versions like this. Keep up with more Pink Floyd, especially the Pulse concert, can't go wrong. Pink Floyd fans chill out
I agree that Claire Torrey did the best version of the vocal in one hit and can't be replicated, but these girls have to do this night after night which puts an enormous strain on the vocal chords especially Sam brown who uses a lot of rasp. Still makes my eyes leak.
🎉🎉I was there 🎉🎉 best £24 ever spent I spent time in ICU and got all the staff loving Floyd, as they love you sharing the music you love , pink Floyd brings people together 💕
This needs to be listened to right after TIME. I always felt this was the soul after leaving life behind. Disbelief, anger then acceptance and peace maybe a little sadness . I've been listening for well over 50yrs and am always left surprised. I'm 78 now and they're STILL my favorite!!!
As good as this is, No One does it like Clare Torrey on the studio version. This album is meant to be consumed in one sitting, with headphones and eyes closed! A little high is good too!
The only reason that Pink floyd fans will tell you the Clare Torry version is the best is because it's the original. I personally like more the one on the pulse. Clare Torry was just a studio back vocalist. Sam Brown is a much better and more complete singer in my opinion. That's one of the reasons why Sam Brown was back vocalist on Division bell album and Pulse live.
@ I H - I happen to agree with you about why people tend to gravitate towards Claire's version but I prefer this version above all as well. Sam Brown, Durga McBroom, and Claudia Fontaine are all better and more well rounded than Claire and I love Claire's rendition. The two times I heard Claire do this on live recordings, granted they were from '87 and '90 so she was further along in age, she struggled. HARD.
The instrument is a pedal steel guitar, being played by David Gilmour who normally sings lead vocals and plays all the nasty guitar, the singers here in order are Sam Brown, she has some solo work u can check out, Durga McBroom was the 2nd lady, Claudia Fontaine was the 3rd. Keyboardist - Richard Wright, Nick Mason on Drums...Guy Pratt- Bass guitar...Jon Carin - 2nd keyboard and various instruments
@Brad Mannion - I wouldn't agree. I think any of the 3 could have done the full song live, but how would the other 2 feel if 1 got the showcase. It only makes sense to give each a section of the song. Kind of a short sighted comment, imo. Don't get me wrong, I love Claire's version and her architecture of the vocals in this song, but all 3 singers here have fuller and more complete vocal range imo.
Claudia Fontaine had such a great voice. So sad she passed from an illness back in 2018, she was just 57. A much in demand backup/background vocals singer not just for Pink Floyd but also for Elvis Costello, Joe Cocker, Julia Fordham, The Jam, Howard Jones, the list goes on, and was lead vocalist in the Beatmasters and formed the backing singing trio Afrodiziak with Caron Wheeler and Naomi Thompson in 1982. RIP.
One of the best songs at the best concert ever. Such a beautiful way to descibe the stages of coming to grips with death without words. Anger, sadness and acceptance. Thanx so much, Love it. Take care, Peace
I love both the original and this live version. Pink Floyd is a very deep dive. The album this is from is Dark Side Of The Moon. It spent 950 weeks in the top 200 album charts. The album cover is the most recognized graphic in the world.
You have to hear the studio version. Clare Tory is the singer who co-wrote this song as she improvised much of it. Her version is on the album but doesn't get heard as often as modern audiences look to video clips and her performance wasn't filmed. It is the definitive version.
Nice reaction bro. It hasn't been mentioned but just to let you know this Great Gig in the Sky is about dieing and ascending. It is done in 3 parts. I think Fear, Resistance and Acceptance. I hope you continue reacting to Pink Floyd. Put on your headphones, close your eyes and they will take you to new places. Watching the entire Pulse concert is a drug without drugs. Drugs I'm sure that helped inspire them.
there are a few live versions of this worth checking out, from Pulse and Delicate Sound of Thunder, and of course the original studio version. So good!
Check out Live at Pompeii 1972, to see them when they were young men, also Any Colour You Like, live at Brighton, some brilliant drumming by Nick Mason on that one.
This was played for my father at his funeral, it really put into perspective what he must have been going through in his last few days of fighting cancer... It wasn't a long fight but damn it if he didn't try. Now he's in attendance at the Great Gig in the Sky
I've got my own songlist for my wake put together, trusting a good friend to make sure those attending hear my life in song.... and this will be the last one played... shouldn't be too long now....
I met David Gilmour back stage at a concert in California 1984. I asked him about the meaning - reason for “Great Gig In The Sky”…. David’s answer was something like…. .I was asked if Pink Floyd would ever do a song about Religion like some others have… so I said, You are referring to the great gig in the sky they call “God“. What words could be used to describe all the pain and suffering caused by religious beliefs. All the crying and wailing from mothers who lost their husbands or sons in a war fought over religious differences. The only vocals should be just the sound of a mothers crying with pain and suffering. That’s the true intentions of the song. We didn’t want to make that public so as to avoid any religious boycott like what happened to the Beatles after Lennon made his comment about Jesus. We could not tell the singer so as to avoid her making any comments that would end up in the media. The speaking heard at the beginning was recorded at Apple records prior to the recording of the song. Roger Waters placed a recorder at the door asking anyone who walked by to answer some questions into the microphone. The janitor stopped and recorded his answer to the question….”Are You Afraid Of Dying”?. It was decided to add the recording to the start of “Great Gig In The Sky”. It leads people to believe the song is about dying, but that is actually not the case. The Great Gig In The Sky…is GOD … The incredible vocals from Clare Torry happened when she did not know what they wanted. David Gilmour told her to pretend her voice is a Saxophone like on other songs on the album, no words, just tones. Results are legendary.
the music was written by Rick Wright for a movie and the director didn't like it. So the put on 'Dark side of The Moon", With Clare Torrey doing her own thing on vocals. she said that she didn't think the band like it . one day while driving her car she heard it on the radio, totally surprise.
The meaning of this performance is a Pearson experiencing death "great gig in the sky" as they die they reexperience their life from start to end the vocalist was given the task to explain this but couldn't use any words. The 1st vocalist to do it was Clare Torrey in the studio version and was the very best at it she actually apologized for her performance, thinking she had done bad, but Pink Floyd loved it and it was used her performance was so good that Pink Floyd renegotiated her compensation for doing it. There have been many other vocalists that were very good also but none as good as Clare Torrey. Great reaction.
The Great Gig in the Sky is about your passage to death. There are no lyrics, the track works on the female vocal which goes through the five stages of grief, with acceptance being the last. If you liked this, try Shine on You Crazy Diamond. It will blow you awaaaaay....x
Check out the song "One of These Days" which also has basically no lyrics and is from the same concert if you want to see David Gilmour really play that pedal steel slide guitar or "High Hopes" more pedal steel guitar at the same concert!! I probably stated this before to this same site but anything from the 94 Pulse concert by Pink Floyd looks and sounds like most other bands finale!!
First, theres Claire Torrys version. Second, the Delicate Sound of Thunder version Third, this one, the Pulse versions. Opinions may differ, but this one is mine.
Someone put the words blocked over their video and so were still able to show the video. And I saw another person put what almost looked like jail bars over it or something and u could still see the video clear as day behind it. So, just throwing that out there. 🤷🏾♀️😊
Best version ever with lil sammy brown...shes great. The old original version with claire torrey sucks compared to this one.I bought dark side of the moon when it came out lol...im old.
Check out Pink Floyd - "Echoes" (Part 1) live at Pompeii 1972 No lights, No Audience just buckle up your seat Dorethy coz Kansas is about to go bye bye!
🤗 Will sub for PF blurred Pulse Concert reactions! 🙋🏿♀️ May I suggest Comfortably Numb to start. Thru Pulse Videos 🤷🏿♀️ you don't have to listen to Dark Side of The Moon in order. 😒 I would sub for that tho. 🤭 And Rush reactions! 😁🐰
The ORIGONAL version was even better. Roger Waters (Bass - Song Writer) David Gilmore (Amazing Guitar - Song Writer), Richard Write (RIP - Keyboards), and Nick Mason (Drums). Clare Torry was the original female vocalist on this song. She improvised the entire thing. The recording you were listening to was AFTER the breakup, when Roger left.
Here on YT there's an excellent interview of Clare Torry, the singer of this amazing track on the original Dark Side Of The Moon album. It's a really interesting interview in which she talks about how the song came about and her role on it. These live performances such as this video a great, but they don't hold a candle to Clare's performance. Anyway, here's a link to the interview: th-cam.com/video/mIW7xZSlZoM/w-d-xo.html
I've been married for about forty years or so and i can state for a fact no woman has ever screamed at me like the blonde chick. If my wife ever screamed at me like that I'd just pack my shit and leave. I can't live without a spine and I'm afraid that would rip it out.
Pulse is OK... but. These singers are too pleased and having too much fun - it's supposed to be someone in grief and dying. Grief for a life suddenly ending and fighting against it, alas discovering they cannot win; their time is over. Clare Torrey. She nails it.

You listened to the wrong no one no one can sing it like Clare not even Claire she sang it twice in the studio halfway through the third time she stopped and said that's all I can give you she made it up on the fly it is the best vocal tract ever recorded
Nice reaction, too many Floyd fans telling you it's the wrong version, or you have to listen to the whole album in order etc etc
While thats true , you can still enjoy live versions like this.
Keep up with more Pink Floyd, especially the Pulse concert, can't go wrong. Pink Floyd fans chill out
Everyone's praising the studio version but this one is my favorite!
attention seeker
fail
Amen
i love both, but i listen to this one more regularly. only the original when listen to full album
Same here. I heard this one first. So, ìt's my go to.
I agree that Claire Torrey did the best version of the vocal in one hit and can't be replicated, but these girls have to do this night after night which puts an enormous strain on the vocal chords especially Sam brown who uses a lot of rasp. Still makes my eyes leak.
🎉🎉I was there 🎉🎉 best £24 ever spent
I spent time in ICU and got all the staff loving Floyd, as they love you sharing the music you love , pink Floyd brings people together 💕
Kudos to Clare Torry but I love what Sam does here, and the way she closes.
This needs to be listened to right after TIME. I always felt this was the soul after leaving life behind. Disbelief, anger then acceptance and peace maybe a little sadness . I've been listening for well over 50yrs and am always left surprised. I'm 78 now and they're STILL my favorite!!!
The blonde is the great Sam Brown, amazing singer…!!!
As good as this is, No One does it like Clare Torrey on the studio version. This album is meant to be consumed in one sitting, with headphones and eyes closed! A little high is good too!
it's hard to understand the context of her improv without the original, but she still kills it, so...
High, drunk or sober,Pink Floyd is always good.

A friend and I got "tuned" and listened to the entire dark side of the moon album during a lunar eclipse
And it took all three to do what Clare Torry did all by herself.

Sam Brown Rocks it big time !!
Love hers the best !!
Still my fav version no matter what the gatekeepers say.
Claudia Fontaine had such a great voice. So sad she passed from an illness back in 2018, she was just 57. RIP.
Ill subscribe to you just because you played one of the greatest performances in the history of music
How we have the ability of the human voice to convey emotion is astounding, but we do it.
One of the best songs at the best concert ever. Such a beautiful way to descibe the stages of coming to grips with death without words. Anger, sadness and acceptance. Thanx so much, Love it. Take care, Peace

The female singers was Sam Brown (the not brown one), Claudia Fontaine (RIP), Durga McBroom.
Both ladies are PHENOMENAL.... EPIC!!!
I think all three of them were.
Check out Live at Pompeii 1972, to see them when they were young men, also Any Colour You Like, live at Brighton, some brilliant drumming by Nick Mason on that one.
Really enjoyed seeing you appreciate this. Excellent review.
This old guy remembers hearing the original album at age 14. Ouch!
Great reaction… dare you go down the rabbit hole of pink Floyd. Your life will forever change.

Please listen to the whole Dark Side of the Moon as an album (studio version). It's gonna split your spirit into a hundred butterflies. SO good.
and a little green will help. they graduate to "wish you were here"
The voice of the chorist is wonderful
I'm back this is called ART.💪🔥🔥🔥💪🔥🍸

Wow, wow and wow.
I've always loved it, and love the Pulse live concert. Wish I had been there.
Music does not require words to convey its message, it is a universal language. You git the message loud and clear when you started floating away! 😃
Death. I think it's about dying. Soooo emotional regardless-breaking any language barrier
Hello from Cody Wyoming! You are awesome keep it up😊
the music was written by Rick Wright for a movie and the director didn't like it. So the put on 'Dark side of The Moon", With Clare Torrey doing her own thing on vocals. she said that she didn't think the band like it . one day while driving her car she heard it on the radio, totally surprise.
Any Live Pulse song is amazing.
Every version of this song is beyond human. But the album version is so tremendous that the original artist herself couldn't recreate it.
Clare, Torry, singer on the album she did it into takes. Unbelievable there is no comparison to anybody else..
The music is in 3 parts: breath, life and death
The best live performance from Pink Floyd is the Comfortably Numb (from Pulse concert). You won't regret it! Trust me!

Really Pink Floyds Dark side of the moon needs to be listened to in its entirety. This song is on that Album . Try it your mind will be blown
Clare Torry nailed it on the studio version.
Check out Australian pink Floyd cover band version

ohh wow! imma try that and see if it works! thanks!
3 back up singers = 1 Clare Torrey!
Listen to the ENTIRE "Dark Side of the Moon" and "Wish You Were Here" Albums. You will be pleasantly surprised.
Man, I love Clare Torry just as much as the next OG Floyd fan. But c'mon, Sam Brown is singing her ass off here.
Best version ever with lil sammy brown...shes great. The old original version with claire torrey sucks compared to this one.I bought dark side of the moon when it came out lol...im old.
Sorrow
No one compares to Clare Torry
Death doth creepeth 'round the edges of life.... doth it... or naught?

As good as this performance was, the studio version is far superior. Do yourself a favor and listen to the original.

Wait what? Thought an African American sang this.
You're first time hearing this😒, my man you just got took to church.
pink floyd sold out staduim concerts where ever they went
you are listening to 70s stoner music. Spark up, and turn on Pink floyd
This is the WRONG video to watch for this song you have to listen to the album cut to get the real feeling from this song
It's FINE to watch this one! I love Sam Brown suddenly belting it out. It's true that the album version is the classic one, and worth a listen.
@@thegroovetube3247 Yes nothing bad about this video just seems like a cover to me good but not the Clare Torry version she is just the Sh!t
