  • This video will give you all the templates you could need to play HOI4 without worrying about what to design. It will also give more experienced players a look at some of the more optimal options out there for any situation in air combat. This guide covers designs for fighters, naval bombers, strategic bombers, and close air support. I hope this video will make you understand designs better as I try my best to give a bit of perspective to what they are. If you want to understand air mechanics deeper I also have a guide on that!     Big problem with the fighter templates is range. Drop tanks are a must have and if you dont use them chances are you will be getting low mission efficiency on anything but the smallest of air regions. Also replacing one of the heavy MGs with Cannons II makes ur fighters trade better against full heavy MG builds even taking into account the increased IC cost from cannons

      If not fighting in Europe definitely. They do increase IC a good bit. The extra cannons will decrease agility enough you may struggle with trades but its higher damage for sure.

    2:15 Agility does not effect losses to enemy division AA. Nothing does. Loses are entirely determined by division Airattack. So your best CAS should only look to max groundattack and Range.
    Also people do droptanks. It helps with Region cover and therefore increases mission efficiency.

    your designs lack range improvements. without carving full air region, your aircrafts will suffer penalties. you need to add range modules for small airframes.

    I like to larp quite a lot and found out that when playing as Japan having 3 factories dedicated to making scout planes (weakest engine, 1 light mg, camera, extra fuel tanks and drop tanks) gave my army huge boost in combat even if they aren’t doing CAS. Attach a scout air wing to my army doing exclusively scouting gave huge intelligence bonus against China especially because they don’t have a large air force to begin with. However my only advice is doing this only with green air same as CAS. Having intelligence on the enemy by area scouting them is insanely useful if I want to know their composition and could let me skip on the scout in my division just by having 100 scout planes doing mission.

    Im surprise you didnt cover carrier fighters/bombers/cas I assume we can take the same template and apply to the carrier variants?

      Big difference is that Naval CAS is going to want the AP bomblocks, and Agility DOES matter for them, as it reduces their vulnerability to ship AA.
      Depending on playstyle, Range modules can either be useless, or be indispensable: range doesnt do much when your carriers are directly in a naval battle, but it matters if you intend to run independent air missions from your carriers, or to use surplus/refugee carrier planes at land bases (i dont even bother making land based light naval bombers for this reason)

    On the Jet CAS design I cant get the weight less than the thrust, and don't have the the defense turret shown in the video available??

    Appreciate your videos a lot, especially guides. I think for fighter you showed an engine I instead of II. Also, I don't get why you don't have sealed tanks acress the board: I always put everywhere, even before armor plate. But I might be wrong.

      I do the same thing, however I think those are best used in MP Modded? It might just be a waste of production cost in vanilla HOI4, but I'm unsure.

      The rubber cost.
      Not many nations can afford to spent that much rubber.

      Thanks for spotting the mistake. Sealed tanks I try to be careful with recommending due to the rubber cost and how quickly it dries up in major wars.

    Judging by my tests it seems like replacing one of the HMG's with Dual Cannons makes your plane better against every other fighter. Can you respond and tell me if I'm right?

      You are right. A fighter with all heavy MGs looses to a fighter with 1 Cannons II + the rest heavy MGs even taking into account the extra IC cost

      @@renatopereira2315 But If you stack all agility bonuses, designer, doctrine, national spirits, the all HMG fighters beat everything because of the higher agility and speed. It is really complicated.

      @@viktorradev1609 The problem with what you just said is that designers and national spirits are based on which nation you are playing. As a generic answer it is true that 1 Cannon II + all HMG is better than all HMG.

    CAS wise , i preffer to use bombs , that allows me to use them as budget NAVs if needed without needing to build extra plane type

    As i heard with de Arms Against Tyranni update Cannons became better stats, so with the 1940 Fighters you can use Cannons. Maybe you could revise your Design.

    I would like to know how worth heavy fighters are? In the late game you can zoom across the Atlantic with them, but will they get shot by enemy fighters / aa once they arrive?
    Really would like to organise east coast bombing of usa as european major without having to fill my map with rockets

      Theyre worth it for defending against bombers as they shoot them down at much higher rates than fighters. Vanilla AI will make them and throw them at you so 100% worth. They also have huge range so for fighting in areas outside Europe theyre great. That being said in MP they are a bit rougher. Players make good fighters and will outcompete you everywhere that matters, still can be very worth. AA wont shoot down heavy fighters as long as they dont have bombing modules and are on that mission. For ship AA they will only hit them with naval modules striking ships.
      East coast bombing heavy figthters are very much what you need.

      ​​@@HammurabaeI think the US also has a massive case to be made for them: not just because of the PTO, but because the Escort Fighters focus can be timed to give you 1944 medium airframes in early 1941. These can be roughly comparable in non-range stats to some of the best 1940s fighters, while covering full Pacific airzones by themselves. They also have plenty of space to carry Rocket Rails, Bomb Racks, or Torpedo Mounts for secondary CAS or naval strike duties, helping to offset some of the production cost by letting them take up a side-job once the airspace is clean
      Of course, i could be completely off the mark here: these planes are still around double the cost of your 40s Light Fighter, and often a bit slower. But being able to provide air superiority over China from the Philippines (as an example, obv Britain will eventually let you use Honk Kong) is nothing to sneeze at. That means your Strategic Bombers will suffer FAR fewer losses, thus potentially letting you build up a stockpile of those for once

    I've been trying to get help with how to design air templates because my designs so far aren't great I put 2 2x cannon 2s and 2 4x heavy machine guns with 2x engine 4s

    Ok, I gotta ask...why MG turrets on fighters? It just adds air attack, which fighter weapons also do. HMG, HMG, Cannon on top, Engine, Sealed Tanks, Armor Plate, extended tanks on bottom for me.

      Cannons reduce agility a lot. When it comes to fighter on fighter battles, agility is an important stat to maximize.

      Adding them too early or too many decreases the planes agility so much it gets massacred.

      Radio is arguably one of the most important techs tho.
      You need radio modules for tanks to increase breakthrough, aircraft modules , and for advanced sonar and radar on ships.

    Can i put forth a video request for how naval convoy raiding combat works? I'm interested in making a functional surface raider fleet but cant really find in depth resources on youtube for it. I figure convoy raiding should be more simple than full-on battles but i dont know the ins-and-outs and it seems like nobody is sharing.

      You need put a group with ten or more fleets. More is better, you can start with 10 groups of 2 subs each and then going up until 10 groups of 4subs each or even more. You can do this with almost all nation because subs are cheap and are the king of ocean.
      The enemy will try stop you but they can be in 10 parts in the same time. If they are trying stop you in two or three you will free sinking in other regions.

      Use the naval bomber templates but make sure its the carrier variant, only carrier planes can go on them which requires a separate production type

      ​@@HammurabaeIt can matter if you use your aircraft manually. For example naval CAS to soften up enemy Garnison during a naval invasion. Personally I would not recommend changing your naval aircraft for this purpose though.

      Yes - just one military factory on scout planes allows you to have more intel which aids in combat. Don't put more than one factory on it though. Use it in conjuction with spies to ensure you have more intel than your enemy
