Well, it's lesson time. The original formation of the band was in 1973 catching gigs wherever they could but they hadn't gained any notoriety so Paul Robert's (lead singer and founder) dissolved the band and moved to France where he met Luigi Salvoni who had heard a couple of Robert's demos and decided to be Paul's producer and drummer.Salvoni used to be in a band called Moon along with guitarist Loz Netto, who also joined the group. They then added bassist Chris Birkin and guitarist Mike Dyche. Alan Fealdman was the keyboardist. Although the song was recorded in 1978, the record label was going through a distribution change and the album wasn't released until a year later in 1979. The single, "Driver's Seat" used guest keyboardist Keith Miller and guest backup vocalist Noel McCalla, who had been Moon's lead singer. The album Fickle Heart was a success, mainly due to the single "Driver's Seat", however, shortly after the release of the album, the band had fractured with members going off to pursue other interests. The band reformed with new members and moved forward, however, "Fickle Heart' was still their only major success. To this day, Paul is the only member left playing in the group. Now the fun stuff!!! The band was originally going to be called The Tears, but Salvoni suggested Sniff 'n' The Tears because Paul had severe hayfever and was always sniffing due to his runny nose.,So Paul was Sniff and The Tears was the band. The 'n' represents the word 'and ' , it's not like sniffing the Tears, it's a common mistake. Paul also had a slight speech impediment so people misheard the lyrics "a little jiving on a Saturday night" instead they heard "a little driving " However the lines that follow describe that they had indeed been dancing. The song has nothing to do with driving. According to Paul it's about the fragmented, conflicting thoughts and emotions that might follow up breakup of a relationship. To be in the Driver's Seat is to be in charge, to be in control of your life. Paul was also a great artist, he painted the cover of the album,,which you see on the face of the bass drum. And now you know the rest of the story. This is still one of my all time favorites. Anyway, loved the review, love you guys, take care and stay safe ❤️

For me, this song is inextricably linked to the film Boogie Nights. A hidden gem from the 70s. I think it’s the “Colonel’s” theme song from that pic.

This sound is power pop late 70s, which has its own sound and often gets overlooked or lumped into the 80s. Other examples would be Hot Child in the City by Nick Gilder, Magnet and Steel by Walter Egan and Gold by John Stewart.
It truly was a transitional sound and one of my very favorite sounds of the late 70s.

Always thought of the ‘n’ as abbreviation for “and”, rather than sniffin’ the tears as you read it. I love that you noticed that the lead vocalist presents like he doesn’t care, very low-key, and did you notice that the drummer, who is in the background of most every vocal shot does not stop for one second?! I have been listening to music since 1969 and this song from summer of 79 is still one of my favorite songs of all time! - so stoked that you reviewed it and liked it. I know you have 1 million requests but their follow up song was called “new lines on love” and it’s a pretty cool tune as well and it is also on TH-cam.

first of all, you guys did the tiny radio edit. the full version gives you a fuller experience. 2nd, to hear this song for the first time and the only time, you could not possibly understand the levels of appreciation that come from digging it the first time, re-experiencing it years later and realizing that you like it a lot more than you thought you did.... and then doing that again, 2 more times!! the layers are infectious and sadly underrated at it's inception but the song has blossomed into the beautiful gold nugget that it was always intended to be... like a fine wine. those who know, know. music and songs sometimes have an unsaid cult following. this is one of those songs. love you guys!!

Late 70's- early 80's music is some of my favorite from the transition from one decade to another. Gary Numan, Devo, Sniff 'N the Tears, Romeo Void, Wall of Voodoo, Missing Persons, etc... great music that set the stage for an incredible decade of music. I strongly recommend a deep dive into 1978-1983- you won't regret it!

One could see the band as a guy called "Sniff" and the band is "the Tears", i.e. Sniff and the Tears. Not sure if that is the intention or not. It is an interesting song, almost representing a transition from late 70s guitar driven rock and the early intro into keyboard new wave. I am glad you did this tune though, since in tends to get lost in the shuffle.
