I don't care what anyone says, this is a classic tune! Love it!
Same!
No doubt. .Kicks ass
Why would anyone say anything other than it’s a classic cut ?… then they would reveal themselves as a philistine which would entail me farting in their general direction … so best for them to just go along with us ! 🤣
👍🏴
Indeed it is
100%
The drummer is a human metronome. He’s absolutely incredible. Always loved this song
I always thought he looked like Kevin McHale from the Boston Celtics in this video.
Well damn now I can’t unsee that! Lol. I loved Kevin back in the day!
He's Luigi Salvoni, and the backing singer is Noel McCalla
You’re a foxy lady…
OMG yes...been playing drums over 40 years...and either speed up or drag while trying to play this...
A classic! I taped over my moms Bible study cassettes and recorded this off the radio when i was 12.
Hallelujah!
😂
Hopefully she learned a worthy lesson.
😂😂😂
@@sebastianblack6506 yeah i eventually got found out and got into trouble. Mom's in heaven now. Looks like im headed in the other direction. But Mama tried... 🥴
Really cool that you guys did this one. It seems to have escaped the notice of a lot of people who otherwise love the 80s.
It's late seventies, and was overshadowed at the time in the UK by the new wave explosion.
@timcarr6381 oh, nice thanks for the update!
@AkelaTalamasca Over 40 years ago. What's a few years among friends. Just glad they finally got around to one of my all time favorite one hit wonders.
@@Jims_Camera_at_dawn This tu e released in the same week as Tubeway Armys 'Are friends electric'. Gary Numan appeared on Top of the pops, and people were fascinated as to what New Wave/Synth was evolving into... This Siffin the tears ditty should have been a far greater hit, but at the time Numan was crowned king.
Yay! One of my favorite 3-chord specials to jam on the 80's Roland HP-450. It's Bm-A-G, but it's usually easier for the guitar player if you play it in Am.
Jay & Amber, great one-hit wonder!!!! 1979. That drummer is locked in to the same groove for the whole song!
Lead singer Paul Roberts, guitarists Laurence "Loz" Netto, Mick Dyche, Chris Birkin bassist, drummer Luigi Salvoni and Noel McCalla backing vocals.
What are they up to today?
@@ClaytonTownley see wiki. just Paul and guitarist since 1981 Les Davidson are left.
Paul Roberts wrote the song some years earlier than this production but I think it was Luigi Salvoni who picked up on it's potential as a hit and put the band together for this version.
Noel McCalla went on to front Manfred Mann's Earth Band and Loz Netto still records today with many albums under his belt.
Actually, RELEASED IN 1978 SUCH A COOL SONG FOR THE 70s AMBER
@@theodoreritola7641 1979 song. It reached #42 in their home UK in June 1979. It spent 14 weeks in the Billboard Hot 100 from 7/21/79 to 10/19/79 peaking at #15.
What's amazing is that the drummer holds this perfect 4/4 beat continuously through the whole song!
one of the coolest songs of the 70's
The drummer is the world's greatest human metronome. Not once does he alter or change the beat, a no fills, no frills unwavering rhythm. The variety comes in the instrumentation, guitar and keys, as well as backup vocals. GREAT song.
Yes! the drummer is LOCKED IN!
@@surlechapeaulike nothing I've seen before. 😆😄😅
@@surlechapeau Extremely simple beat to play coming from a drummer. Doesn't take much to be "locked in". lol
Yes he gets a lot of stick for that performance
The drummer is very cool! I bet he has heard Klaus Dinger or Jaki Liebezeit 😉
One of my favorite one hit wonders. This is a shorter version for the video, the original ends with a guitar outro.
But it's not THAT much shorter...the guitar outro on the original fades almost immediately. I always thought it was a crime that it didn't go on longer.
@@jpmnewyork love the extended version
I'm not sure if this video was ever edited from an extended version as you can clearly see Luigi Salvoni stop drumming right at the end of the fade out and set his sticks down.
Great song! It has it's own unique sound that I always liked.
Great one-hit wonder! Incredible musical hooks! "Driver's Seat" peaked @ #15 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1979. Shoulda been #1.
Definitely should have been #1, I remember being pissed that it didn't 😂
Love this song. Just discovered it recently and I'm 52 and a rock fan. It did sound familiar though
That drummer is like a beat machine - what stamina!
Awesome driving song❤
Finally! This song is just so awesome. Always reminds me of driving at night, on a trip to some new place, some new adventure. Thanks!
This is one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE SONGS!! ❤😍 👍I LOVVVE❤❤❤ THIS SONG! Its an Original 🎉🎉🎉
When I was in middle school my neighbor, who was 3 years older, used to take me with her on the weekends and cruising between south Georgia towns and Tallahassee, Fla. We used to blast this song and sang along! The memories are flooding me this evening. Thank you for pulling songs from our memories. Gives me a huge smile this evening. ❤
WOW one of my favourite 80s bands. Saw them 4 times in London and had all their albums. Great band.
This song is one of my all time favorites. That Rythym guitar never let's up. And of course the drums. Oh god.
And this song gets me totally amped up. Like you could raise me from the dead with this one.
Rhythm not Rythym.
Correct spelling is what separates us from the animals.
Drummer is focused! High hat, snare and bass drum...that is all he needs
I forgot about this one. This is one of the greatest songs in my opinion
Yes! One of the great "one hit" wonders. I can listen to this over and over.
One of the songs that told this 14 year old in 1979 that something new was coming for music. Great vibe! ❤
I was only 12 in 1979, but you are exactly correct. The other song that I liked from this same time was "Cruel to be Kind" by Nick Lowe (think I have the name right).
Hey fellow classmate, we knew we were witnessing the end of an era and the dawning of a new one!👍🏻
@@exeter1985 nailed it!🎶
@@louisb5563 it’s so awesome to hear people had the same exact experience.🙌🏻🎶
@@exeter1985 YES!!!
Always loved this song.
FYI the name of the band Sniff ‘n’ the Tears means Sniff and the Tears. Not sniffing tears.
Origin of the name:
When naming the band, Paul Roberts (vocals, guitar) suggested "The Tears", but their manager suggested "Sniff 'n' the Tears" because Roberts had hay fever and sniffed a lot.
Thanks for this as I've wondered about their name.
Yes!!! NOT "Sniffing the Tears"!!
OMG! I havent heard this song in ages. its a banger and everyone loves it.
Well, it's lesson time. The original formation of the band was in 1973 catching gigs wherever they could but they hadn't gained any notoriety so Paul Robert's (lead singer and founder) dissolved the band and moved to France where he met Luigi Salvoni who had heard a couple of Robert's demos and decided to be Paul's producer and drummer.Salvoni used to be in a band called Moon along with guitarist Loz Netto, who also joined the group. They then added bassist Chris Birkin and guitarist Mike Dyche. Alan Fealdman was the keyboardist. Although the song was recorded in 1978, the record label was going through a distribution change and the album wasn't released until a year later in 1979. The single, "Driver's Seat" used guest keyboardist Keith Miller and guest backup vocalist Noel McCalla, who had been Moon's lead singer. The album Fickle Heart was a success, mainly due to the single "Driver's Seat", however, shortly after the release of the album, the band had fractured with members going off to pursue other interests. The band reformed with new members and moved forward, however, "Fickle Heart' was still their only major success. To this day, Paul is the only member left playing in the group. Now the fun stuff!!! The band was originally going to be called The Tears, but Salvoni suggested Sniff 'n' The Tears because Paul had severe hayfever and was always sniffing due to his runny nose.,So Paul was Sniff and The Tears was the band. The 'n' represents the word 'and ' , it's not like sniffing the Tears, it's a common mistake. Paul also had a slight speech impediment so people misheard the lyrics "a little jiving on a Saturday night" instead they heard "a little driving " However the lines that follow describe that they had indeed been dancing. The song has nothing to do with driving. According to Paul it's about the fragmented, conflicting thoughts and emotions that might follow up breakup of a relationship. To be in the Driver's Seat is to be in charge, to be in control of your life. Paul was also a great artist, he painted the cover of the album,,which you see on the face of the bass drum. And now you know the rest of the story. This is still one of my all time favorites. Anyway, loved the review, love you guys, take care and stay safe ❤️
Good on you mentioning Paul's art career. In some circles he's known more as an outstanding hyper-realist painter than the former singer of Sniff n the Tears.
This is so damn good. Amazing they never had another hit
Have always loved this song since release. It’s even a permanent presence in my ringtone library. Glad to see a reaction to this oft-forgotten gem!
My younger sister got a K-TEL album for Christmas, and this song was one of the tracks. Liked it instantly.
Whenever I played this at a party, wedding reception, or on the radio it would always get a big response; and then many years later I hear it used in "Boogie Nights". Full circle.
I had this song on a K-Tel album back in the day. Never ever heard it on the radio. But it's still one of my all-time favorites.
Loved this when it came out I was 11 but it had such a cool beat and still does. If a road or a highway had its own theme song this would be it. Thanks for finally reacting to it.
Always loved the jam in this song. They did an incredible amount with 3 chords ...
For me, this song is inextricably linked to the film Boogie Nights. A hidden gem from the 70s. I think it’s the “Colonel’s” theme song from that pic.
Awesome, now Donny Iris - Ah Leah. Donny turn 80 this year and still rocks it.
Great tune.
One of the GREATEST One-Hit Wonders ever!!!
Takes me right back to high school.....crusing Main Street......Still one of my favorites that gets played on my ear buds when Im on my motorcycle. Thanks for choosing this. LOVE it!
My favorite song of my late high school period. Released my junior year. To listen to this song while driving at night at that time and what it evokes and still does is beyond words. It is the number one nostalgic song of my late teen period.
Amen.
Yes!
In August 1979 along with ten others, I traveled in aTrekAmerica minibus from New York to Los Angeles via the southern states. During the three weeks of the trip, Drivers Seat was on the radio, many times every day of the journey, but we all loved it and never got tired of it. It was already a hit back in England where we all lived, so it was great to find that it was also a big hit in the USA. Hearing it again on your show brought the memories of a fantastic experience and journey flooding back.
The Flaming Lips "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots" & "Do You Realize"
This and Sausalito Summer Night - two of the greatest one-hit wonder driving tunes. Had them both on a mix tape.
Summer Nights was a great one.
One of the many one hit wonder groups of the 80's. If you want some other one hit groups with strange names try "I Want Candy" by Bow Bow Wow, Timbuk 3's "The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades" or Wall of Voodoo, "Mexican Radio".
You had me at Mexican Radio and shades …. “ And then Dan knew he’d fucked up adding ANYTHING by Bow Wow Wow “… I know music is subjective etc but Dan what HAPPENED in your life back then for you to say you liked “ I want Candy?”… ffs they were a plastic manufactured post punk outfit put together by Malcolm McLaren cis the big deviant had a thing for a 15yo who couldn’t even sing …. 👀
Woah…. NOT cool Dan ! 🤮
👍🏴
This was released in 1978.
Great suggestions! Love all those tracks!
🥰🥰🥰
There's something about this song that always helps me when I have to slog through something really unpleasant or painful. You have to go on. You have to keep going. "Pick up your feet; you gotta move to the trick of the beat."
The cool background singer is Noel McCalla. He replaced Chris Thompson as lead singer of Manfred Mann's Earth Band. Driver's Seat came out around the same time (1978-79) as another favorite song of mine, 'Damned If I Do' by Alan Parsons Project.
80’s and 90’s was so many different different bands, this song was fabulous. You two need to try new band THE CHURCH, song is called UNDER THE MILKY WAY. Used it in a few movies as well
Haven't they done that one already?
An iconic Aussie song Would be great if you could react to it
I like Russian autumn heart better
Y'all should try the band Climax blues band song Couldn't Get it Right.
Excellent groove. Hope they react to it.
Back in 1979 I was a 20 year old driving 🚗 my with my friends and we where blasting this music and song going out to the disco club's and dance 💃 with all the beautiful ladies Come people let's go back to the seventies when we were having fun
Man takes me back to being a sixteen-year-old kid back in 1979 and skating to this song at the skating ring along with all the other great hits we had back then
One of the great songs from 1979 that helped kill Disco. Even though they were a one hit wonder, they shared the charts with My Sharona, I Want You To Want Me, Let's Go by the Cars, and even The Devil Went Down to Georgia.
1000s of other great songs from 1975 till midnight 1979 Dec 31s other than DISCO, TOTO APRIL WINE THE STONES BOB SEAGER BACK BETTY RAM JAM I CAN NAME A LIST 50 MILES LONG THEMID TO LATE70s where packed with way more that just disco maybe 20 percent of disco tops
“1978” was an excellent year for music… even the 1 hit wonders were bangers 🔥❤️🎸
I think 78 and 79 were music's best years.
some serious new wave and rock ‘n’ roll to counteract the disco going on
totaly AGREA
From 1976 - Billy Joel with Angry Young Man - Listen to the live version so you can see him play the piano on this one.
All these years later and I remember every note, every intonation and sound in this song.
Can’t drive slow when this song comes on!!🤘🔥
The production of this song is top-notch. Layer after layer of sonic greatness as the song progresses. A one-of-a-kind song that I will never tire of listening to.
Probably 5 years or more since I heard this song but as soon as it started I was singing along.
I have been waiting for this ride. Thank You
Wow. Another that's not been played near enough these days. Love the chorus. Thanks.
In the summer of 1979, my 12 yo self loved this song. Living through the 1970's music era as a child and then a pre-teen, this song was so different from anything I had ever heard before.
Love this smash from 1978. Has always been on my playlist.
Love this song!!! My fav radio station, WLIR then WDRE 92.7 FM always played Driver's Seat! I cannot believe that you haven't reacted yet to You Spin Me by Dead Or Alive, a fun New Wave song with a great music video. Reacting to You Spin should be a top priority, ask anyone that knows it! That's a quirky band name, Dead or Alive, so is Violent Femmes (Blister In the Sun), Love & Rockets (Ball of Confusion), Frankie Goes to Hollywood (Relax).
There's a good documentary on WLIR out there, you should check it out.
I went to the LI premiere in Port Washington to see it, & I own 2 DVDs somehow, lol. I met with Rich, a fan who was interviewed for the movie, I'm in a WLIR group on FB. The movie might still be on Showtime, they changed the title to New Wave: Dare To Be Different.
@@arielpena6564 Yup, that's the one, guess you were very on top of it-- most LI'ers I know had no idea it was out.
@@Teraxx23 I listened to WDRE all the time, at home, at work & in the car, up until they went off the air. I moved back to LI after the station changed to WDRE.
That smooth sounds can also be heard in bands like Fleet Foxes, Houndstooth, Innocence Mission, Golden Palominos, The Sundays, Sneaker Pimps...from roughly the same era, I think. Cool share y'all thanks!
This is from 1978, though the song was written and first demoed in 1973. The guy singing falsetto is Noel McCalla, He was a solo artist who sang backup and toured with thus band fur two years. He was also a studio songer appearing on a bunch of other people's recirds at this time including the first solo album by Mike Rutherfordof Genesis. From 1991 - 2009 he was the lead singer of Manfread Mann's Earth Band.
Sniff 'n the Tears is a one hit wonder.
Can't hear this great song without thinking of the movie "Boogie Nights".
So many great songs on that soundtrack (loved the movie too)
Great song! One of a kind.
Tough to pick something from this... but the next song I often go to might be 'I Got You' by 'Split Enz' from 1980 I think. Great tune. Cheers.
The cat with the fur collar and glacier glasses doing the background vocals gets my nomination for the "Coolest Dude Ever" award!
Oh, he is incredible! Always loved his fab energy
80s vibe my hairy butt
This was actually released in 1978, and charted in 1979. This was in league with bands like The Knack, Greg Kihn Band. Tommy Tutone and The Tubes.
Quite a few great one hit wonders from the mid to late 70s. Try John Stewart,Gold, featuring Stevie Nicks and Sky High by Jigsaw.
two other timeless, fantastic songs!
If you want another pure 80s sound, that's actually from 1979, try " walking in the rain" by Flash and the Pan
Or Drugs in my pocket by the Monks
Lol I didn't think anyone else on the planet knew walking in the rain 😂
@@reedhensley it was so futuristic, you could mix it in current top 40, and it wouldn't sound that out of place lol
@@reedhensley bought the album for St Peter, but Rain was wayyyy better
Love that song, Listen to the album still, it's in the collection!@@reedhensley
One of the best rock songs ever. And you nailed the dark, back-alley feel to the tune. It's haunting, a perfect driving at night song.
Late 70's- early 80's music is some of my favorite from the transition from one decade to another. Gary Numan, Devo, Sniff 'N the Tears, Romeo Void, Wall of Voodoo, Missing Persons, etc... great music that set the stage for an incredible decade of music. I strongly recommend a deep dive into 1978-1983- you won't regret it!
One could see the band as a guy called "Sniff" and the band is "the Tears", i.e. Sniff and the Tears. Not sure if that is the intention or not. It is an interesting song, almost representing a transition from late 70s guitar driven rock and the early intro into keyboard new wave. I am glad you did this tune though, since in tends to get lost in the shuffle.
Could y’all do some more Susan Tedeschi songs?
Also, check out “Midnight in Harlem” by Tedeschi Trucks Band (live recording).
This song was a big big hit when it came out ! And the Doors were strictly the 60s , Jim Morrison died in 1971 and the Doors had already split up ! Jim Morrison had moved to Paris , He died in Paris ! He's buried just a few feet away from Chopin , The famous pianist !
Aw, NICE one! This 'n' The Pretenders 'n' The Jam 'n' The Police 'n' Madness... what a time :)
I'm waiting For Bad Finger
This is an absolutely awesome song to drive to, especially at night. Great pick and great reaction guys, thanks!
Amber and Jay, imagine being teens back then and blasting this on the radio while driving an old Mustang around - my now wife and I did!
I've listened to this song hundreds of times, turned up the volume to 11 each time. love the video too. Everyone in the band is into it except the drummer, looks like he really wants to be somewhere else.
Great tune guys! I think that you're gonna love it, I know I did when it came out! Enjoy! ✌🇨🇦♥️
Love this song, bought the full album, but couldn't get into it
I was with you here Dawn. The Knack was the same, The Cars, & The Police we did dig.
@@amrak5028 the Knack had a couple good songs, but the album wasn't great overall. The Cars and Police had albums where every single song was great. My favorite Police songs are deep cuts- Murder By Numbers, Jaurais Toujours Faim de toi, Man in the Suitcase, Peanuts, it's Alright For You, Tea in the Sahara etc. Same thing with the Cars - I'm obsessed with CandyO, love " it's all I can do", even the ultra weird stuff like " shoo-be-doo". Breakaway is a good Cars b-side, that got a little radioplay

The song is classic. It's amazing that the song was written way before it was actually released. The one that was released the second time is when it took off. It has this great acoustic intro with a driving drum beat all the way through the song so you can dance to it. And the guitar how tall is simply amazing. And what was totally unique about the song. back in the 79 you couldn't compare this to any other song. You heard nothing like this song before.
"Flash and the Pan" another band around this time with "Hey St. Peter". I had both albums. The brother of ACDC brothers Angus and Malcomn Young.
A great one hit wonder 👌
Very strange song. The drums never change once. That’s why it’s hypnotic. If you think about it, the other instruments all sound like they’re playing a different song but it works.
This was a great tune for cruisin' the circuit in downtown Calgary that summer....Memories....!!!!
Always thought of the ‘n’ as abbreviation for “and”, rather than sniffin’ the tears as you read it. I love that you noticed that the lead vocalist presents like he doesn’t care, very low-key, and did you notice that the drummer, who is in the background of most every vocal shot does not stop for one second?! I have been listening to music since 1969 and this song from summer of 79 is still one of my favorite songs of all time! - so stoked that you reviewed it and liked it. I know you have 1 million requests but their follow up song was called “new lines on love” and it’s a pretty cool tune as well and it is also on TH-cam.
