I’m 18, the beginning of a short-lived (1 year), first love. Nothing like it up to that time. No money with little to impress (other than city boy charm and grit), a Philly boy transplanted to the suburbs of New Jersey. Immature yet a dreamer. Sincere in wanting the experience of young love. Growing into manhood and landing the girl who was out of my league (or so I thought at the time). My future undecided and unaffordable. Hers? Well-funded (Dad owned his own business) and destined for out of state college, too far from me. I was committed to making this long distance love work. I should have known her sights were growing sooner, faster than mine. I became the significant outcast of this song, a song I played and played….and played…and still play. Pick up, pick up. I did. Several flings (“romances” but not really) leading me to the crescendo of the “moving on”. Stumbling through college, uncertain how to pay for it, what my major would be, and if I’d be with the beauty of beauties. The struggle became the dream of the dreamer realized. A degree and what’s most important…the beauty who became my wife. Today, 40 years together, 36 years married…children, grandchildren, a full, well paying career (now retired). I’m hearing the song again and reflecting on the pain felt and the reward of hanging in there (the trait of a stubborn and unrelenting “Rocky-type” Philly boy). To you, the song can be what keeps you thinking, understanding that in order to live, you got to hang in there to get to the better place. May God give you the bumps along the way for the sweet journey to follow.
Not just a great _song_, but a great _record_. The buildup of instrumental textures, of multiple hooks going on simultaneously, makes this endlessly replayable.

Your Top 2000 series is seriously one of the greatest things that’s ever happened to TH-cam. Your love of the music is palpable in every interview you do.
I think "Boogie Nights" is a complete different genre. This song applies to what the other poster said. Disco was so popular at the time that this amazing song had to take a "back seat" (pun intended) to disco. In my humble opinion Boogies Nights was not a song I liked very much. No offense intended. Just talking about music.
Great song from my teenage years. The mix of acoustic and electric guitar was rare and it was done very smoothly. Underrated song in my opinion and one of the best guitar riffs to be heard.
I worked in a deli in a supermarket and this song would play on the PA in the bakery in 2005. I picked up the best of Sniff ' n the Tears shortly after. Who knew when the disco crap was going on in the states when I was 10, this British band was writing great music!?
The greatest driving song ever! I still have my original and very well worn cassette from back in the day, good to see Paul has stood the test of time as well as his fabulous song.
One of the GREATEST 'driving songs' ever recorded. Just as he sings it: 'a little jivin' on a Saturday night' as you cruise down the boulevard of Whatever Town. This song just oozes coolness listening to it as you drive, and yet there's a terrible sense of sadness and loss emanating from the lyrics as well. All of that make the song pure genius, even if it was a just another One Hit Wonder of the era.
I had missed this song in all my time listening to music... I don't know how that happened..... but I think it's right up there in the top 100 of all time !
Always loved this song but I forgot about it for awhile and then I saw Boogie Nights and it brought it back for me. The song has a lot of energy its in my top 100 of all time.
That's where I heard it, on one of Top Gear's Best Of, driving compilations back in the 90's. Essentially a rock music compilation. It was incredible back then and I still enjoy it now. Classic Rock at it's most timeless.
First time I heard it was in the fall of 1979 on school bus in football uniform going to an away game.Loved it immediately and it completely fired me up for the game.Unfortunately we lost badly.
This song simply kept me in a fantasy land when I was 17. (Still does at 61!).
Driver's Seat ... me and my granddaughter's favorite song... she's two. 😊

Yes, one of the my favorite driving songs. I loved this song when I got my K-tel "Hits of 1980" record album when I was 8. I was so happy when they included this banger in the Boogie Nights Soundtrack.
You just never get sick of hearing this song, it’s so good.
❤️ that song like a music drug
Try Ian Gomm's ...."Hold on"
omg Paul...you are the greatest...love you and Sniff...15 in America and @1 in my heart!!!...your lyrics are phenominal...like New Lines on Love!!!
One of my favorite songs. even after all these yrs. I sill play this song onlie at least once a week . For over 40 yrs. 1979 to be exact.. No kids. no husbad. Just out of SDSU with a masters degree. i was the shit.!!!!
This song was so much better than many songs that made top 10 in the UK
One of the most listened songs in my life! I can´t imagine to drive a great car without this music. Thank you for this super one hit wonder
SUPERB song from my youth! Catchy, original, and memorable. And better than 99% of music out today...
AudiophileTubes. My sentiments exactly
Thanks for writing such a great song!!!
Love to see this resurrected. He could manage a new hot rock band and write more songs.....Alas.
Truly one of the best tunes ever. Still gives me chills.
Thank you Sir for having created this true musical jewel.... It continues to sound with all the quality you could ask for in the middle of 2022.
Your Top 2000 series is seriously one of the greatest things that’s ever happened to TH-cam. Your love of the music is palpable in every interview you do.
Lovely voice and Lovely man ....
Great message. To endure, move on and don’t give up. Awesome feeling to the song. The constant drum beat is the key.
I hadn't heard the song for years then it was used on an Amazon Prime ad. Absolutely love it.
His voice sounds like Al Stewart...great song
Nothing wrong with that!
Yup
And a little bit of rasp of Bob Dylan.
I hadn't thought of that,but I think I see,or rather hear,what you mean.
Year of the Cat....another timeless classic
Everyone who listens to this song becomes a back-up vocalist for Sniff 'n' the Tears - you just can't help yourself. Such a great song.
YEAH!!!!
This song is awesome, thank you guys for making this wonderful song, I could listen to it on repeat.
The use of the song in the film "Boogie Nights" was awesome as well. This song peaked at #15 on Billboard in 1979.
@@jeankeats3200 What???? I was talking about the movie "Boogie Nights." Not the song.
@@citygirl5705 I never saw the movie so I did not know. No biggie.
Great song from my teenage years. The mix of acoustic and electric guitar was rare and it was done very smoothly. Underrated song in my opinion and one of the best guitar riffs to be heard.
Song still holds up 30 years later. Great work!
Try 40+ years!!
This is an awesome tune. This song should of been number 1. 🎼🎸🥁😎
This song is so popular in Alberta Canada in my area.
Now I know what this song is about. Like what he said. Break up and moving on with your life.
This song touches your soul and it makes sense after a break up. Wow! I will always love this song. Number 1 in my personal chart.
I'm 55 and still love the song to this day. 😊
One of the best songs from my teen years. I always loved the feel of the tone...a little hazy and mysterious.
Love love love ❤️ this song. It wasn’t number one in the US? Hard to believe. You’re awesome 👏
God... now I feel old. I saw Sniff 'n' The Tears back in 1980. Was that really 40 years ago?
The thing is now you can count pandemic time and subtract that from actual time. So if you're 30 you are actually only 28.
Very good. Very haunting. Just a little bit dark. Thank you for a wonderful song that stands the test of time.
So many Memories, youth is fleeting, it sounds great 40 years later!
Still gets my blood pumping after all these years. A timeless classic.
All of that make the song pure genius, even if it was a just another One Hit Wonder of the era.
classic. i'm always amazed people still comment on this, but then it is so good. Great bit of back story about the hit that never was.
Adore this song. Lovely to see this fellow chat a bit♡♡♡
Absolutely still love this song.
It's all about the relentless beat. That's the hook.
The beat plus the electric piano :)
Yes, the drums give it that forward motion of being in the driver's seat.
That fast pounding beat is divine.
Anyone tho 👂.... what about the infectious and creative vocals and harmonies. luv
@@comealongcomealong4480 Absolutely Kath. Sometimes it just all comes together
Is it me or is it hard to tell where the accent is with the drums? Is it on the number or the and?
I never get tired of this song!! Paul Robert is so talented both as a musician and an artist!
And he comes over like down to earth chap as well
I had missed this song in all my time listening to music... I don't know how that happened..... but I think it's right up there in the top 100 of all time !
I’ve loved this song since it came out…….🇨🇦
I love this song, I hear it every day (literally)
I grew up in the 70's and always loved that song. It was also featured in Boogie Nights.
What a great song. Should have been a number one hit.
Great song and just a lovely man to interview..
Australia
Always loved this song but I forgot about it for awhile and then I saw Boogie Nights and it brought it back for me. The song has a lot of energy its in my top 100 of all time.
Just a timeless classic, thank you so much, memories galore!
One of my favorite songs. Never get tired of hearing it.
