    I am a singer and I am studying Carrack, his approach, his songs. A Brit with a soulful voice, self taught, and I am in awe. He closes his eyes and he has an inner tension in his phrases like a jazz trumpet, very complicated vocal riffs, a lot of variation in his tone and texture (this is why he is so interesting to listen to), especially in, IN THE LIVING YEARS, I bow at his altar.

    Paul Carrack was in the touring band headlined by Eric Clapton in 2014 (This song came out in 1975). Eric introduces him and they breakout into "How Long". Serious respect from Slowhand.
    Carrack is often dubbed as the "Man with the Golden Voice" as he has contributed to bands such as Ace, Roxy Music, Mike + the Mechanics, Nick Lowe, Carlene Carter, Roger Waters, Squeeze, Paul Young and a lot more. This guy is gold.

  • @russellmorgan5611

    My guess is, the guitar is through a Leslie cabinet, normally used with a Hammond organ. The speakers inside the cab rotate and the rate of rotation can be increased or decreased with a switch. Eventually guitarists moved to Chorus pedals as Leslie cabs were bulky and heavy. Jan Akkerman of Focus used them extensively.

    • @peterwalsh2470
      @peterwalsh2470 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't know enough about super old school amps, to me you could also achieve the same sound with a flanger effect pedal, maybe some phaser chucked in as well, but as you mention, rotating speakers would create a similar effect.

    • @Dreyno
      @Dreyno 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There lots of pedals these days that emulate a Leslie pretty well. Chorus never really quite did the job. Cheaper and handier than dragging a Leslie around though.

Hearing this is always like meeting up with an old friend who you hold very dear in your heart. The lead singer is Paul Carrack who is massively loved and respected especially here in the UK. It was such a surprise to see that you listened to "How Long" and "Smoke from a Distant Fire" on the same day. It's like you read my mind. I've known both songs since they first came out and always paired them together. I suppose it's because they're both about cheating and have a more sophisticated jazz-pop feel.

    Paul Carrack, the singer on this track, is a fantastic voice who doesn’t get as much recognition as he deserves. You can find him doing lead on the Squeeze hit Tempted (among other songs), he hit bigger popularity with Mike + the Mechanics doing such songs as Silent Running, The Living Years, and Over My Shoulder. He also had a set of hits as a solo artist, including Don’t Shed A Tear, One Good Reason, I Live By The Groove, and Love Will Keep Us Alive (a song he co-wrote with that ended up getting recorded by The Eagles, but his own version appears on his solo album Blue Views.). He also did works as a session keyboard/piano player for a handful of artists, including John Hyatt, Eric Clapton, Roxy Music, Nick Lowe, and Elton John.
    Phil Collins once said that Carrack had such an amazing voice that he could sing the phone book and Phil would listen.

    There are "effects pedals" and processors that can seriously change the way guitars and other instruments sound. Jimi Hendrix and SRV were masters of the Wah Wah pedal. Jerry Garcia was famous for both his "Auto-Wah" sound as well as MIDI processors in the 90's that made his guitar sound like anything from a flute to a saxophone to a trumpet or anything else. Pink Floyd used a lot of Phasers and Flangers and Chorus pedals. SO. MANY. SOUNDS.!

I was surprised to discover that Paul Carrack was the singer, who (as previously mentioned) did an album with the band Squeeze, particularly the hit song "Tempted", and he also shared vocals with Glenn Tilbrook on "Black Coffee in Bed". It's very clearly his voice. I feel like this was a one-hit wonder for Ace, but I'm not entirely sure.
