Love this! I came across your video doing research for a mourning gecko tank for my science classroom. We are currently building a bioactive day gecko “rainforest biome”. I told them it’s not a pet, it’s a learning project. They also built a desert biome (leopard gecko) enclosure and they are adopting one from Snake Discovery. It helps motivate students to finish their work so they can go watch the biomes. Now I’m going to go binge watch all your videos! Thank you!!
Awesome! I’m glad to hear that! I would have loved if my teachers had the motivational reptile tank hahah! Let me know what you think of the other videos :)
I loved the video! Mourning geckos are such amazing little lizards! I would love of you could do a video about how to make a exo terra escape proof. My one fear with setting up a bioactive exoterra and giving my growing mourning geckos more space, is that they might escape and little gaps.
I'm waiting for the raspberry ripple, corn on the cob, yellowbelly, clown, asparagus, chocolate orange ball python in a tub under the feeding table to appear 😂🤣😅😂🤣😅 you just know itl happen Mike😅😅😅
Beautiful tank as always! My girls are finally gaining some size now that they’re in a slightly warmer room. Would love to see a parthenogenesis video.
Yes I'd love to hear more about the science of morning geckos and their asexual lesbian ways. 👀 Newbie question. When only a small amount of heat is needed, do you recommend a heat mat or the lamp you're promoting for a bioactive gecko set up? I'm currently debating which tech to get. I need UVB, some heat, and light for plants. Will the lamp give off a bit of heat for the geckos and light for the plants?
Lol I try and stay away from anthropomorphizing as much as I can. The heat bulbs that are made for them are much more effective in delivering heat. Depends how the tank is setup though. The heat bulbs don't give off much light to sustain plants, the mini LED is a much better choice for plant growth.
Hi Mike great video I’m wanting to start a Mourning Gecko tank and would love to learn as much as I can about the little critters. Also about what to look for in choosing the Geckos. Thanks looking forward to more videos and also one on plants I can use I my tanks that are safe. If you can’t tell I’m a beginner and I want to start out right.
Hey Valerie, first thing I will say is that several of the videos on TH-cam don't really give the proper information about them, so I would highly recommend checking out some of the care sheets that are available online. I will also be making a care video about them in the future. As far as plants go, most tropical plants will do okay if they are provided with proper lighting and what not. I have a video on my channel going over some of the top 10 beginner plants!
Hey Mike! I used to watch your videos all the time but fell out of watching keepers. Just wanted to come back and see what I missed and ask if you ended up moving to Australia for that period? Hope you’re well!
Depends when you stopped watching, but you've definitely missed a lot haha. Thanks for tunning back in. I never moved to Australia, but I did end up moving across the country to Ontario!
Love watching my mourning geckos. I lovingly refer to them as the ritalin children of the gecko world, constant motion : ) Thank you for sharing your video! If you do a reproduction video might you also cover indo-pacific geckos?
It would be a video more about parthenogenesis within the mourning geckos and how they are taking over the world at this point. That is the perfect names for them when they are active at night time.
I am about to build my own bioactive set up for a crested gecko. I wanted to know what would you do if your tank becomes infested with thrips, spider mites, etc. and how you can prevent them from come into your tank in the first place.
Quarantine your plants for a month or more before putting them in the tank. I just used predatory mites and they tend to do well with maintaining a low population of thrips.
@@MikeTytula will they only outcompete the microfauna in the enclosure they’re introduced to? Or would i risk them getting into my other enclosures and killing all? I considered using predatory mites for my houseplants but in scared they will be able to get into my enclosures too🥴
Ya if they are introduced they certainly can. I use them all on my plants and haven't had any issues. Worst case, you reseed your enclosures with springtails.
@@MikeTytula you should make it there few real courses on the subject 👍 i did found only this one about all geckos th-cam.com/video/jxoxYMLy4XI/w-d-xo.html and this one about parthenogenesis th-cam.com/video/lOws4eorosc/w-d-xo.html
I "catch" my Mourning Geckos in a small container that used to hold toothpicks. It has a lid so once I get them in there, I can cover it and move them. I only had to "pick up" a Mourning Gecko once when she got out of her tank accidentally and I did feel like I would accidentally squish her lol. I hate moving them/cleaning them etc it gives me so much anxiety I will lose one >.>
Ya normally I have a little glass cigar tube that I can catch them with, but honestly with my fingers is just so much faster. I just have to be careful to not squish them!

The newer models of exo terras are pretty easy to escape proof, but these older style ones are pretty difficult tbh.
Oh I’d also love to know lol I think the ones I have are older style 🙃
In the process of preparing my tank for some mourning geckos I should be getting on Monday. This was very useful, thanks.
Glad you enjoyed! Have fun with your little ones!
Love watching small terrarium builds.
Thanks! This one turned out alright!

Mourning gecko! Beautiful vid and enclosure, great work man!
Thanks for watching!
looks really great
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed!
Morning Gecko! Great video! The tank looks great, I look forward to buying plants from you this year. 😁
HAhah thanks so much! The plants are doing wonderful!
The mourning geckos are going to love it
They seem to be doing fairly well!
Catching them seemed a lot easier than I expected lol. I was like oh boy that's gonna be wild 😆. I think my Day Gecko just has be traumatized lol
Day geckos I would be a lot more careful and probably use a fish net so their skin doesn't peel off. These guys you can just go in and grab them.
Just curious if you have any leopard gecko setups. I’m looking to get one but not sure exactly what to do.
Here's a link for you to check out!

Looks great. I want to get morning geckos but the size scares me.
They aren't a handleable gecko, but make for interesting little pets to keep!
BBBBBBIOACTIVE!!!!!!!!
hahahah I tried
Which pump would you think I need for a very gentle waterfall that will be 36" high? I got the 36x18x36 tank.
There's plenty that are available just check the head height on the pump before purchasing.
Please make a update, how it's look's now, after 3 months...
Thanks:)
It's been redone a couple times since then because we keep selling the mourning geckos and have to get them out which destroys the tank.

Did you need to cover up the vents on them?
The vents at the back are always recommended to be covered.

Will mourning geckos control there own population. I really want them but I don’t know what I will do with the babies
Nah they won’t.
It must be better after the refresh because the background music went from sad to exciting! 😜
Thanks for watching Tony! Hope all is going well!

Having a good clean up crew is a good start, they will usually eat the eggs of the mites.
Typically the mites out compete the microfauna in the tank if they are introduced.
