So as long you cure it properly it will adhear. Id say 99% of people who try to paint anything with any paint dont ever use a proper cleaner to prep the material (such as a rubbing alcohol or acetone) to clean dirt or debris off (just washing with water will not be sufficient)
You need to make sure to not overgeat the paint right away ( as you saw me bring it up to temperature then back to cold and hot and cold again before letting it get smoking hot
You can leave it polished its just gonna take some elbow grease to get it to all look smooth from polishing. All depends on what kind of polished finish you want

If I were just to sand it down just to polish it off, what would you recommend putting on the exhaust after the polish to stop any corrosion or rust

Still looks minty! Other than the obvious boot rub spot but that will always need touching up from rubbing

VHT product is expensive and top of the line stuff. If its doesnt stick , you’ve done something wrong
i sabded my xr80 2004 echaust by hand and so as my xr350 1985 it was painful

Yes you want to use an etching primer

Yes if you use the correct paint its designed to go straight onto the exhaust

If you sand to bare metal on anything it will rust if you dont paint or put something on it
