    I'd rather have a disclaimer then the localization team having to awkwardly rewrite the script around the scene. Most of the time it doesn't make sense and is very self-evident that the context was changed in translation to not offend certain people.

    Or the scene where Ryuji gets beat up by everyone has me salty. I'm surprised they didn't change that scene to be one where they actually show their appreciation for Ryuji in Royal. You'd think a game focusing on the corruption of society would focus more on that sort of thing.

      Characters like Ryuji are usually the butt of all jokes in Japan, which is a funny contrast to how they're perceived in the West. I would never say that Atlus should feel proud of this Royal localization, they should rather be ashamed.
    To me, the basic rule of localization staff's job is to bring the product to a new language market in a way that makes it understandable for the new audience, and gives them same experience as the original. Changing context and connotations of even a minor scene like that is a giant breach of that basic rule, as now we are offered a watered down product instead of what it was supposed to be.
    Some people can complain about the original Persona 5 localization being a bit stiff at times, however all the ideas in it were absolutely intact, the only edits made were those that were absolutely necessary(So stuff like puns, which obviously doesn't work between different languages, or other details). Royal localization allowed for far more edits, and this is what we get, a "sanitized" inferior product, which changes things deemed "offensive" because of some Resetera mentally challenged morons screaming bloody outrage on the internet.
    Atlus West staff should be VERY ashamed of themselves, and hopefully Royal sales take enough of a hit for them to notice that listening to Resetera is never a good idea.
    PS: Given what was done to Royal, I think it's pretty disgusting that the website made by some attention-seeker complaining about original localization is still up... even though it was a far superior localization to what Royale received.

      He's saying they should be proud of all the much-needed grammar fixes. Things like "He healed himself? Is it because he ate those inside there?" and "It means they're holding nothing back and are serious to kill us!" These two scenes (both of which are meaningless filler that have zero impact on the actual story) are the only scenes that were explicitly changed in a way that is inaccurate to the Japanese script (other than the term "Metaverse" as a whole which is a HUGE continuity error but that's something Atlus USA's pretty much boxed themselves into at this point). 90% of translation errors from the original game (Sae's phone call during the prologue, for example) were fixed, and most of those are things that ARE important to the story.

Because it's not the first time Atlus West censors things like that, and we MUST tell them that this kind of "sanitization" is unnacceptable, if we keep just being like " meh, it's not important just a minor thing.", they are going to keep listening to Resetera, and slowly it will turn from minor stuff into much bigger things being censored(Like Tokyo Mirage Sessions for example, though I'm not sure if Resetera had anything to do with censorship of that one) because pre-emptive censoring would seem to make no difference in sales, and at least makes e-terrorists who dox people for wrongthink, leave them alone.

    While I like Lipschultz's approach to faithfulness in translation when it comes to localizing art, his mindset is clearly already poisoned by Californian Bay-area far-left bigotry for him to call out anything he doesn't agree with as wrong, even if they're mere caricatures of people that *do* exist in real life. Truly sad times, but whatever, another sane Japanese-to-English translator who's willing to fight the good fight will eventually show up when the pendulum starts going in the opposite direction of "political correctness". It happened once, I don't see any reason to think it won't happen again.

  • @sokoTV2
    @sokoTV2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    I think the Japanese developers making these changes is fine. It's their art, and it's a different game than base persona 5. I think that falls within the artist's rights. They aren't going too far with changes like George Lucas, and they're changing their own personal message and feelings on the subject. I think it's a very positive change to the message of Royal and persona 5 to give them actual names.
    But that translator is right. The bad shouldn't be sanitized for the western release. It should be there, even if it is harmful and causes people to not play the game. It's disgustful that it was initially changed so drastically in the original western release. They could have easily made it more accurate to the real version, but they didn't. They don't care. I don't think this is a harmful stereotype however. I don't think the message of persona lends itself into believing that one or two people represent what the creator thinks of an entire group. I really hope Atlus USA realizes their mistake and doesn't pull this crap in the future.

The first dungeon of the game is to stop a guy who's sexually harassed one of your party members and raped someone that your party member most cared about. But now it's it's happening to a guy it's totally fine and should be made as joke to me that's ridiculous and I don't understand why they would put that double standard in game. Seriously, look at that thing - it has men on leashes and has the same vibes as Kamoshida's views on the girls on the volleyball team. So basically the game already had really gross double standards unfortunately, but this one joke scene isn't the worst of it. I'd say the other two are way worse.

One is a rapist while the other plays uses her female charm to steal from rich assholes. Even by her lore in they say "Carmen is generally depicted as a classic femme fatale who would take advantage of her beauty and charm to make men fall for her, but quickly break the relationship once she is bored of her wooer, and then she looks for her next victim." Absurd changes. If it’s homophobic to have an aggressive gay dude hitting on someone, it’s also wrong to have an aggressive straight man hitting on someone.
    But neither are wrong, obviously. Guys (whether gay or straight) get aggressive. It happens. It’s part of our DNA. I’m straight and have been hit on many times by gay dudes, IRL. Who cares?
    There’s nothing immoral about that scene; it’s actually pretty hilarious since Ryuji is such a try-hard alpha who constantly tries to exude machismo.
    Reminder: this is FICTION! These are not allegations about real people. If anyone is making generalizations, it’s the SJWs who believe that these fictional extras in a video game somehow represent all homosexuals. Imagine if southern people got offended every time someone wrote a villain with a southern accent. Imagine if Germans got pissed off for every German villain. It’s absurd!

    The big issue I have is that the characters come off as fucking predatory. Not some of the worst I’ve seen, but threatening someone to strip that is under the age of 18 from people who are clearly adults is predatory and plays into stereotypes of LGBT+ people being p*dophilic. Inb4 someone commenting on Japanese age of consent laws. The censorship to me is at least an attempt to try to be aware of the issue, but idk if it’s gonna stick with the Japanese writers to be more aware of how their writing impacts people. Doxxing is never OK and if anything it could have the opposite effect, pushing people further towards harmful ideas of LGBT+ people. It’s a complicated mess that could have been avoided if the original script had made these characters less predatory and in a more natural way. They really seemed to come out of nowhere.

    • @Mldy96
      @Mldy96 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know you've made this comment years ago, but still wanted to point out that most Westerners seriously misunderstand consent laws in Japan by forgetting about the equally, if not more important Child Wellfare Act, which states minors can only consent *within their own age group* (some prefectures going so far as making it an *exact age* thing where even your 17-year-old classmate will be arrested for dating 16-year-old you, and yes, such things did and do happen).
      But yeah, adding not just two predatory queer characters, but even more specifically two predatory trans characters was an extremely disgusting move on their part.

  • @Masterblader158
    @Masterblader158 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Really it's only the more predatory part that I see as fucky, since it's a very inaccurate based on propaganda stereotype rather than just the minority but sizeable stereotype of effeminatity and I only dislike straight up inaccurate rather than exaggerated stereotypes, and just removing them trying to strip Ryujji is more the better action for JP since just appreciating Ryujji more built body is not too creepy to get annoyed over and turning them just into cross-dressers seems less tolerant actually, of removing their gender identity... Is this really a Resetera change since it seems too Conservative for them with a more honest direct natural translation fitting better?

On the plus side though, I don't think the new dialog ruins anything to be honest. It doesn't "sound off" or anything like in other localizations. Don't really care about showtimes as they are just cinematic attacks which sacrifice a turn and can deal lower dmg than you wanted. 3rd tier Persona's and new party member are way too late game.
