It's notable since the gang is far enough away that you wouldn't see any animation for their mouths moving. I'm curious if that was in the original Japanese or if that was something unique to the English dub.
Chances are it is unique to the dub. 4Kids always made sure there was never any silence in the animé they dubbed. It was one of the reasons why they always had those weird music pieces in their dubs.

It’s an old Greek work it refers to lesser dirties typically filling a tempter role Also I actually do prefer sone of the censored art (rikka fairies are improved with that frill and monster reborn is so much better imo) but yeah a lot of censorship was and continues to be pointless
2:54 Also worth noting is that Upper Deck Entertainment owned the TCG at the time (Konami USA did not get the TCG until 2009 after winning a lawsuit against UDE accusing them of counterfeiting after suing another sports cards company who claimed it was UDE who supplied their counterfeits), a lot of people incorrectly blame Konami for the changes to card names that Konami has never done themselves, bizzare things like detranslating Diamond Dragon's name (literally Diamond Dragon spelled in kanji as most foreign words and loanwords are) to Hyozanryu instead of calling it Diamond Dragon #3 as Emerald Dragon and Sapphire Dragon were changed to Luster Dragon and Luster Dragon #2 respectively. Konami on the other hand did not change the names of the two 2010s gem dragons, Alexandrite Dragon and Labradorite Dragon.
They still kept changing names after they got the rights to the TCG and they could have easily reverted older name changes, so no. They are still to be blamed, though only indirectly in these older cases.
This is why a lot of cards have unnecessary text added to them at all times, which their OCG versions don't need, because newer support cards caused those old translations to need newer support cards to have the extra: "this card is always treated as a X card..."
@@lpfan4491 While that's true, there were cases where they _did_ change some back when they didn't need to. Oscillo Hero #2 was changed back to Wattkid (even though none of the Watt support even worked with it) when they could have just added text that says "This card is always treated as a "Watt" card" like how Summoned Skull and Axe of Despair have text added to say that they're archfiend cards (which much like Oscillio Hero #2 , made no sense in the case of Axe of Despair as there was no support for Archfiend spells, no idea if that's changed since then though)
Honestly I'd be interested in watching you cover every episode of the series. I've only ever gotten brief references to the changes via the abridged series.
The shadow realm wasn't a completely made up concept, it also exists in the original manga and japanese dub, called yami no sekai. The difference is that in the original it was only a plot point in a few episodes (for example pegasus sealed yugis grandfather in the shadow realm or in GX titan being alive and meeting kagemaru in the shadow realm after loosing to jaden) while 4kids heavily expanded on it and used it for basicly any shadow duel or any other occurance that in the original would result in death.
Another insane censorship is that Pegasus actually ends up dying in the manga. When Bakura removed Pegasus’s millennium eye, Pegasus ended up dying. I think there was an actual plot where Pegasus’s heir even tries to revive Pegasus.
Although I think Pegasus was dying during the fourth season of the anime. From the Orichalcos cultists (using wiki to even remember this whole ordeal).
Later writing turned it from censorship to just being a rewrite. Pegasus has actual importance in the plot before dying offscreen prior to 5DS. Meanwhile in the Manga, he obviously doesn't because he's already dead.(The only time he shows up after the original story is in a short memory-flashback about the creation of the Winged Kuriboh-card in GX)
I still find it funny that even though they changed Kairyu Shin from Japanese to English, they still kept its Japanese name intact, just switched it to the "English" Japanese translation...lol
I don't get the idea of making women less sexy. Like having big boobs doesn't make it more adult. xD Not even really that revealing. You see more revealing stuff at the beach. I always felt that was a good way to judge to see what kids could witness in a show. If it's something you could see at a regular beach, it should be good. If it's something you'd see in a strip joint, you make it more adult.
And this is why I'm glad I don't even have remotely any form of liking for the 4kids dub, and it's why I'm glad I watched the Japanese version and plan on reading the manga at some point.
Thank you for the content. You're the only person doing a channel dedicated to this content, without it being a generic anti woke reactionary channel, so we all respect you. No shade to those channels, I subscribe to those channels, too, but you have to admit, Censored Gaming's presentation is a lot less sensational and more objective in it's coverage.
We have to fight censorship no matter if we sensationalize, it is not by remaining objective that we will succeed in fighting censorship, we must have an aggressive strategy (in the sense of occupying the media space, not in the violent sense) to make our point no matter once again if we have to sensationalize.
I miss yugioh through the years! Fun fact I've seen everything Yu-Gi-Oh related from og, GX 5Ds Zexal arc V, Sevens and Vrains from kidswb, cartoon Network, nicktoons network and DisneyXD just like Pokemon so sue me 😅😅😅
Was waiting for this series to come back. Side-by-side stuff for this is great. Though, you should have used the episodes of the uncut Yu-Gi-Oh dub instead for what they had released. Would've made for a more interesting comparison to see 4Kids' modified version and their unmodified one. It would not cover the final few of the video since it stops around there, but it would have been fun to see.
3:24 fun fact: while the German dub was based on the English one, the word Demon wasn't censorded. The card was called "Beauftragter der Dämonen" (roughly translated to agent/appointee of demons)
No, that would be them bankrupting TCDigital with a lawsuit because 4kids wanted to completely own Chaotic as a second Yugioh. Former TCDigital CEO Bryon Ganon however held on to the rights to Chaotic to this day and then after multiple failures to get it licensed to other manufacturers like the now defunct Kodo Studios who also got the rights to Dracco's MLP knockoffs known as Filly, straight up lied about bringing it back for reasons entirely unknown to me.
are you planning on doing videos for the complete series im just curious about the arc where he battles that guy from Atlantis i forget his name and the name of that seal that everyone has i know its not called the seal of oricalcos in Japan and I'm almost positive there's a pentagram in it
I'd argue the Pheromone scene isn't really 'censorship' but more 'most kids don't know what pheromones are', since they're targeting a younger audience, it doesn't really change anything about the scene but does make the joke more understandable for said kids.
Wait. Mai hates people because the people who went to the casino she worked at loved money and power? Um, what? How exactly were the people who went to the casino supposed to act? Who goes to a casino to be a philanthropist?
I also think it's worth pointing out that the anime had already HEAVILY censored the manga. As an example, instead of Bandit Keith getting dumped into the ocean, Pegasus turns Keith's hand into a gun, then forces him to shoot himself in the head. Pegasus also was brutally killed by Yami Bakura.
I'm fascinated by this because in Mexico literally no anime was ever censored. The distribution rights there are much cheaper than licensing and dubbing American cartoons so they're a lot more abundant with anime. So a lot of them were just dubbed and thrown right onto the air.
All of these episodes were Redubbed with the original animation and dialog and sold by funimation on DVD years ago..but we're discontinued due to legal issues with the Japanese distributors.
Fun fact, in Brazil even with the censour some tv channels started to call yugioh as the "demon game" making our mothers throw our cards out. That was the dark age of yugioh, where you need to hide your cards from your parents.
It is possible, they just won't ever do it. They don't even license out the japanese series for anyone who wants to dub it. It's either the version they own or no version at all. Big american ego on 4K/Konami's side.
@@admontblanc Also an issue because it isn't subbed into every language and people(me included)often prefer to watch in their own language, even when they can read english.
You missed exodia’s attack name being changed from hellfire to obliterate. Also the cards themselves are kind of a censorship because they couldn’t show the actual card product in America so they censor all the cards to look not like the actual cards so it wouldn’t be considered an advertisement.
I know they truncated the adaptation of the pre-duelist part of the manga, but it's morbidly funny to me that Kaiba went from purposefully using holograms on Sugoroku to try to kill him in Death-T to just wanting to show off his new holographic technology as a flex only to accidentally put an old man in the hospital during its debut.
The English art of Monster Reborn is miles better than the original. It’s so pretty and iconic. Whenever I look up Yu-Gi-Oh! tattoos, I find a lot of examples of Monster Reborn specifically. That and Mario’s back tattoo. Whoever did the redesign for Monster Reborn I hope got a huge raise and a trophy. They did a beautiful job
*shows stereotypical skeleton warrior "Undead Warrior was changed to Zombie Warrior" Couldn't they simply name it "Skeleton Warrior" or was that name already copyrighted?
"Skeleton Warriors" was copyrighted to Landmark Entertainment Group during the period the Yu-Gi-Oh dub was produced. The rename avoiding "Skeleton" was an attempt to avoid a lawsuit.
@@admontblanc Due to misunderstandings in the law, some dingus at one point held the word "Edge" until he p*ssed off EA and they dragged him to court for it to be revoked.
This might be a stretch, but at around 18 seconds in, you use the word "focusing", but with your accent it almost sounds like fuckusing. Maybe they're bots are hearing fuck really early on in the video and causing it to trigger the age restriction?
i find it funny how 4kids censored the pentagram by adding a upside down pentagram on top of it. Like, did they ever seen a metal record in front of their eyes? lmao

Never knew how much they changed
15:32: That image on the right looks so goofy, lol.
If you do another compilation like this can you edit out the intro and outro to the individual episodes for a better viewing experience?
Did the first video get copyrighted or something?
I don't get the idea of making women less sexy. Like having big boobs doesn't make it more adult. xD Not even really that revealing. You see more revealing stuff at the beach. I always felt that was a good way to judge to see what kids could witness in a show. If it's something you could see at a regular beach, it should be good. If it's something you'd see in a strip joint, you make it more adult.
May you rest in peace kazuki Takahashi
Seeing these videos just made me wished some studio out there would take these old anime series re-dub them like Viz did with Sailor Moon.
I remember reading the Manga after watching the first couple seasons on TV as a kid.
I was like "the heck? this is not the yugi from tv"
And this is why I'm glad I don't even have remotely any form of liking for the 4kids dub, and it's why I'm glad I watched the Japanese version and plan on reading the manga at some point.
.....and now the video is age-restricted, good job youtube.
You want controlled opposition, got it. Face the wall.
I like to think he's like a small news reporter
We have to fight censorship no matter if we sensationalize, it is not by remaining objective that we will succeed in fighting censorship, we must have an aggressive strategy (in the sense of occupying the media space, not in the violent sense) to make our point no matter once again if we have to sensationalize.
Cant wait for the 2 Guards Pointing at Kaiba XD
Never understood why they decided to change the name of "Killer Bee" to "Killer Needle"
They way they edited out guns always makes me laugh 🤣 when those two goons kick in the door and point their finger at kiba 🤣
Not sure that panning up Mai's body really adds anything to her character, except to say: "Check out this set of breasts on legs".
That kiba jumping out the window somehow seems more realistic in the censored version.
Speaking of yugioh did you know that in at least gx and 5d their was a whole 3rd season that we didnt get in america.
"Western" more like Americanized. Latin American dub keep a lot of the themes and stories the same, but they did used censored animation at times
I miss yugioh through the years! Fun fact I've seen everything Yu-Gi-Oh related from og, GX 5Ds Zexal arc V, Sevens and Vrains from kidswb, cartoon Network, nicktoons network and DisneyXD just like Pokemon so sue me 😅😅😅
You have saw everything from the American versions the Japanese versions have seasons like the end season for 5ds and gx.
Literal 4Kids War Crime.
Literal 4Kids special military operation forbidden act
You should cover a lot of the card designs and names, many of which were not included in the show.
It's a deep hole with a lot of potential content.
Censorship is so fucking lame.
Kinda agree
If it wasn’t censored we wouldn’t have gotten shadow realm
I AGREE 👍
çén$0r$h1p is so heckn less than ideal
@angelolagrutta4679 the purple realm.
Abridged reference.
are you planning on doing videos for the complete series im just curious about the arc where he battles that guy from Atlantis i forget his name and the name of that seal that everyone has i know its not called the seal of oricalcos in Japan and I'm almost positive there's a pentagram in it
"Barrier of Oreichalcos" is kind of a lame name.
Why you left the erased title from Kaiba's book he red, which was "Also sprach by Zarathustra"
Did I go back in time?
It’s been 6 years since the last episode? Seriously
I'd argue the Pheromone scene isn't really 'censorship' but more 'most kids don't know what pheromones are', since they're targeting a younger audience, it doesn't really change anything about the scene but does make the joke more understandable for said kids.
Really enjoyed the breakdown of every difference!
IF wish Yugioh was never targeted for a younger audience when it was distributed to the USA.
Wait. Mai hates people because the people who went to the casino she worked at loved money and power? Um, what? How exactly were the people who went to the casino supposed to act? Who goes to a casino to be a philanthropist?
Tea who is Anzu in the Japanese version is my fav character
I also think it's worth pointing out that the anime had already HEAVILY censored the manga. As an example, instead of Bandit Keith getting dumped into the ocean, Pegasus turns Keith's hand into a gun, then forces him to shoot himself in the head. Pegasus also was brutally killed by Yami Bakura.
I'm fascinated by this because in Mexico literally no anime was ever censored. The distribution rights there are much cheaper than licensing and dubbing American cartoons so they're a lot more abundant with anime. So a lot of them were just dubbed and thrown right onto the air.
I don't think, as a kid, I ever once thought an adult enjoying a beverage was anything but alcohol just because they censored the label
All of these episodes were Redubbed with the original animation and dialog and sold by funimation on DVD years ago..but we're discontinued due to legal issues with the Japanese distributors.
With all the censoring they had to do its a miracle they even bothered to adapt it in the first place
Fun fact, in Brazil even with the censour some tv channels started to call yugioh as the "demon game" making our mothers throw our cards out. That was the dark age of yugioh, where you need to hide your cards from your parents.
I wonder if it's going to be possible to re-release the series without the 4Kids Changes
I would like that like how the 90s Sailor Moon got a redub without the censorship.
It is possible, they just won't ever do it. They don't even license out the japanese series for anyone who wants to dub it. It's either the version they own or no version at all. Big american ego on 4K/Konami's side.
Just watch the japanese version subbed.
@@admontblanc Also an issue because it isn't subbed into every language and people(me included)often prefer to watch in their own language, even when they can read english.
is there any video abt censorership during season 2
Wasn't there a season 0? I don't know if it was ever dubbed for western audience though
It was never dubbed
It was also made by a different studio, which was Toei.
@@Ability-King-KK Is that why we never got it on DVD?
@@d-manthecaptain1382 Pretty much.
We need a part 6
Great video Man.💪🏽
You missed exodia’s attack name being changed from hellfire to obliterate. Also the cards themselves are kind of a censorship because they couldn’t show the actual card product in America so they censor all the cards to look not like the actual cards so it wouldn’t be considered an advertisement.
Exodo flame
I know they truncated the adaptation of the pre-duelist part of the manga, but it's morbidly funny to me that Kaiba went from purposefully using holograms on Sugoroku to try to kill him in Death-T to just wanting to show off his new holographic technology as a flex only to accidentally put an old man in the hospital during its debut.
Manga Seto: Jerk
Toei anime Seto: Main villain, very evil
Gallop anime Seto: Actually a good guy after the mind crush, but with rough edges.
So does this upload mean you're going to continue this series?
Where can I watch the Japanese version with subtitles?
Censoring the wine is kinda crazy, can they really not let what appears to be a middle aged man have a drink at meal times?
The English art of Monster Reborn is miles better than the original. It’s so pretty and iconic. Whenever I look up Yu-Gi-Oh! tattoos, I find a lot of examples of Monster Reborn specifically. That and Mario’s back tattoo. Whoever did the redesign for Monster Reborn I hope got a huge raise and a trophy. They did a beautiful job
*shows stereotypical skeleton warrior
"Undead Warrior was changed to Zombie Warrior"
Couldn't they simply name it "Skeleton Warrior" or was that name already copyrighted?
"Skeleton Warriors" was copyrighted to Landmark Entertainment Group during the period the Yu-Gi-Oh dub was produced.
The rename avoiding "Skeleton" was an attempt to avoid a lawsuit.
@@Code7Unltd honestly some copyright laws are outright deranged. How is anyone allowed to just copyright generic naming conventions like that?
@@admontblanc You'd be surprised how selective law tends to be.
Have you heard of the term "lawfare"?
@@admontblanc Due to misunderstandings in the law, some dingus at one point held the word "Edge" until he p*ssed off EA and they dragged him to court for it to be revoked.
This might be a stretch, but at around 18 seconds in, you use the word "focusing", but with your accent it almost sounds like fuckusing. Maybe they're bots are hearing fuck really early on in the video and causing it to trigger the age restriction?
i find it funny how 4kids censored the pentagram by adding a upside down pentagram on top of it. Like, did they ever seen a metal record in front of their eyes? lmao
1:20 "with no substitute given"
Dark magic attack?
Probably means in this specific episode. Never woulda caught it.
"in another few hours, the sun will rise"
bringing it's warmth with it, because she said she's freezing. Classic Tristan.
Chain attached to boomerang (Kunai with Chain)
Shield on the left hand sword on the right hand
( Shield and sword)
When you like Dan Green but also you hate 4kids censorship
