One of the lead "localisation mangers" of Altus/Sega has an resetera account so I'm sure you can guess why the changes were made. It has little to do with "bending the knee" when the people working on it are in full support of cencorship.
They must be convinced that censorship of this kind is immoral and only harms those who they are trying to protect. They need to fully comprehend that they are "localizing" art, not just a product that can be molded to make a certain region more comfortable with it. It should not matter if a member of the localization team or a voice actor feels uncomfortable with it. The art they are tasked with translating properly resides higher than their views. They aren't being abused like some Kubrick actor in the process. Also abolish game dubs, they ruin the translation of the real audio.
Yeah I hate that they act like it's such a "natural" thing when it was resetera threats that brought it all out. There was no "bending of the knee" whatsoever or capitulation of any kind. There was no back-and-forth there was threats by a bunch of douchebags and they in their "progressive" wisdom said yeah we'll change it as we've re-evaluated it and come to a new conclusion. They can't just out and out say yep, these guys told us what we need to hear and then we did it.
Reeee forum wil never stop whining. It wil only get worse and worse. They have the power and they know it. Weird that Game devs listen to them. A forum where they dont mind having pedo's.
Hell they wont even purchase and most of them never even played the game, some of them didint even know plot points about the first antagonist in the first release of the game
yeah, so, are we also going to talk about how they tell Ann to strip at Yusuke's house, or that you can date your Teacher and a Doctor? it's a fucking gag, it doesn't represent anything, it's fiction, take a chill pill, you're the only people being dramatic over a scene because it's "problematic" ; problematic my ass.
@@Peasham You realize that that scene takes place in the adult portion of the city, right? Therefore, unless you're anal retentive and check everyone's ID, it's fair to assume that any "high schooler" there might as well be in college. Heck, my favorite RL porn straight up involves perfectly legal women who appears younger than they are.
the game treated the sexual harassment of Shiho seriously, but treated the gay people looking predatory to minors as a joke. This does not only make light of sexual harassment against males, it reinforces and validates the negative perception homophobes have on gay people. Are people really that stupid to not understand this lol.
What's funny is Persona 4 got a major sales boost in the west thanks to early online playthrough like Giant Bombs run and some early TH-cam let's play. My Best Buy and GameStop for example had many unsold copies and after it got some attention online they where all gone. Even had restocks later with the PS2 that had the music CD with it. I had two copies prior myself. I bring it up because Atlus Japan is going anti online advertising by threatening let's plays and even threatening discussion on games now... So besides Atlus West caving to Reeesetera who has threaten and docks the developers already is that Atlus Japan heads and lawyers are doing their own damage to Atlus in general... It's really sad to see.
As great as the Persona franchise is, I find it hard to continue to defend Atlus while they're continuously bending the knee to non customers and censoring the most petty of creative aspects. Its damn sad... Also make Lufia 3 already;)
Of COURSE THEY ARE GOING TO BEND THEIR KNEE THEY ARE A BIG COMPANY its always favorable to bend the knee also who cares its just a 2 min scene people are acting like this is a big deal
-UnJust- if you give them an inch they’ll take a mile, small changes become big changes and two games from now they’re 4Kids entertainment where they remove and change stuff so drastically there’s not gonna be anything left from the original vision.
@@AtelierGod well no they won't change the entire game just cuz people didn't care about 2 npcs being removed that's such a big difference and makes no sense
The guy in the ign interview talking about the cencors has an resetera account so not really bending the knee when they are in full support of cencors.
When will they learn that complainers won't even buy the sutff? They didn't even play the original. It's not a change I mind that much, but it's dangerous, grant those NPC's something and they'll want more. This makes me doubt if I want ports of the other Personas for the current generation
@@UziOmega of course not. But i doubt all gay people are sexual harassers to minors as well as this game portray. If P5 had a more chill lgbt+ characters (maybe a social link too but that might be asking too much) maybe no one would care. But this states that all lgbt characters love to sexually harass P5. Ofc i love persona 5 and its a very minor part but i think we have the right to critize stuff we love so i do like it so imma buy it.
People use the argument that it's a 30 second scene in a 120 hour game just changing the scene wouldn't be too bad. But I say it's a 30 second scene in a 120 hour so what's the point of changing it?
Cause it's a dumb scene anyway that goes against the game's themes and the whole first arc just to make a lame joke. I'm not saying it absolutely had to be changed, but (even without the resetera nerds) I can see why they'd change it.
@@Kingdom850 I still can't it's a silly joke that's only 30 seconds in a 120 hour game (that's how long royal is) it's just a stupid change. And what else will they touch?
@@Oldschoolgamer13 If there's another scene involving homophobia or racism, how short it can be, I they'll change it too. I've spent around 140h on the first version of the game, this is the only two scenes that annoyed me, so I guess the rest will stay roughly the same (the maid arc was strange, but ok, why not.). If you like those scenes so much, rejoice, you can still see them online or play the first game.
@@StephSinalco I'm against censorship as a whole but if this really offends you get some thicker skin. And I've put many hours into Persona 5 original.
Persona 5 is filled to the brim with questionable subject matter; why not censor the whole damn game? Why cherry pick like this? I notice that Atlus USA never makes any changes that would affect anyone's waifus. Just have a disclaimer that the views in the game aren't shared by Atlus USA or their employees. Their job is to bring the game over and release it in English, not be the PC police. I wish now I'd screencapped an Atlus USA employee promising to never censor a game when the forums were still around and people were worried about Rule of Rose.
>Sexual abuse victim tries to commit suicide >People dying just because >Main characters are thieves But the biggest moral issue this game presents are two gay guys.
That's what I'm saying! They act like we are all pu__ies! Scared of our shadows.. Scared of everything.. and I blame Columbine and 9/11 for all of this.. Right after those terrible events we been handcuffed even from things that wasn't even a big deal back in the states back in day now it's a big problem now.. We let our fear and emotions stop us from enjoying life..
It's worrisome for the future of atlus and Sega games that they have such a team that's "on the pulse" of what's controversial. I believe that a theme of persona is that an individual resides higher than the group. So a character's actions do not represent their group as a whole or what their creator thinks that group is. It's inappropriate to make these changes, and I know it's too late to go back on it, but regardless I hope they reconsider, or at least reconsider going forward with future releases. I think the audience should be treated with the respect we deserve and not believe that a portion of the audience, big or small, will find something offensive. Atlus and Sega have always had problems with censorship, but I know they can be better. All companies can, even if some have done some disgustful censorship in the past. I do hope this controversy over the censorship is bigger than the controversy atlus felt from the original release. I expect better from those people who misunderstood Catherine and persona, I know they can see the game for what it is. But I understand atlus and Sega trying to avoid controversy by pleasing those people, because they seem so blind and hard headed. But no matter how blind they make themselves and how manipulated by web 2.0 they've become, they can do better and see better and not think these scenes are homophobic. Love that ascii art. I hope the Japanese audience also helps influences atlus USA's decisions. Also, looks like we'll have another case where the Japanese audio remains the same where text in English is changed, just like in Catherine FB. So maybe if I close my eyes, and pretend I know Japanese, it won't be censored :^]
@@Paradodo6 they were more minor than I thought they were gonna be. But it is sort of spoiler-y. There's a side conversation in the JP Fullbody, and JP and western versions of Classic where Erica says that Vincent doesn't know "what a woman wants". To which Vincent replies "I'd be more willing to take that advice from a real woman." Then Erica threatens to make Vincent pay his bar tab right there. In the western release of Fullbody, instead of Vincent saying "I'd rather take that advice from a real woman." He just says, "I don't know..." or something that doesn't imply anything about Erica's character, to which Erica makes the same threat to Vincent about his bar tab. So while this change is very minor, it does change a little bit about the relationship between these characters. It no longer shows another side of Vincent's imperfection, and Erica to reasonably be mad at Vincent for his remark, but still be accepting of him as a friend, showing their unconditional friendship. Now in the western release of FB, Vincent is just questioning "woman's intuition" or just Erica's advice in general, and Erica threatens Vincent for no real reason, making her come across as a bitch. Also in western FB, the Japanese audio is the same as the original JP release, while the western text reflects these changes. So it is slightly less bad than Tokyo mirage sessions. Also in the western release of FB and classic for PC in the west, they remove any references to "Eric" in the credits. I find it hard to consider that censorship, so I don't mind as much than with changing dialogue. The changes weren't as drastic as some people wanted, and some people wanted for FB, but I find any changes to appease a wester market hard to stomach.
it all starts with small changes, and if Atlus bends his knees for people who don't even consume their products, the changes will start to increase, until the game is completely different, we will have a new Tokyo Mirage Sessions :(
@@CreekGamingMontages They're using the 'incel' label now because they've run every other fucking label into the ground. I’m appeased. Sure, *some* people are unappeasable, especially the loud ones on TV and social media. But I just want to play good RPGs without feeling queasy from scruffy guys hitting on minors.
Draco Errarus thanks for the correction. It might be distasteful, but it’s still just fiction with fictional characters. It’s the same thing with lolis. Being the into Loki’s doesn’t necessarily make you pedophil. Being into actual children does.
CreEpick I agree to some extent. I’ve studied sexual attraction and addiction enough to know that “what you’re into” is influenced by what you are exposed to. For the most part, watching a lot of loli makes you more attracted to loli. Slight tangent to follow: More on a porn addiction side, the brain gets bored of seeing the same sexual thing over and over and will respond more to novel things. I’ve read accounts of straight guys getting off on gay porn, gay guys getting off on straight porn, etc. I also know a few people personally that acted well out of their “tastes” because of a porn addiction. Long story short, long exposure to sexualizing younger character in fantasy can evolve into other fetishes, including pedophilia. Anyway, back on topic-I myself have struggled with sex addiction, (which is why I’m careful about the games I play, besides being a family man). I think a lot of us Otaku have similar problems and come to one of two conclusions: that fantasy is either completely harmless or potentially devastating. From experience, I fall into the latter.
As someone that is gay, I didn't even bat an eye at the gay characters and never knew they were controversial. People need to chill. The entire game is filled with questionable content. You, a minor, can hook up with your adult teacher. A character is heavily implied to have been raped by a teacher. Why is this the thing people are focusing on?
Lumios because Ryuji almost got raped and it’s played off as a joke. Last time someone got raped in the series they tried committing suicide and it was the whole first arc.
@@mikei6605 How delusional can you be? This is the first time I actually hear people thinking this scene implied rape... Back in 2017 no one even mentioned something nonsensical as that. The closest thing that happened to him is that they tried to drag him into a gay bar or something and he escaped... I personally find that funny and anything but offensive.
They continue to change content to please people that won’t play. The only games I’m gonna buy from atlus now or the Korean version that have English subs because I hate censorship. It would be different if it wasn’t in the game in the first place but I hate that are removing or changing content to please people that won’t buy it in the first place. 50 percent of the people that complained don’t even own a PS4.
I didn't know this was a thing! If Nippon Ichi made games that were changed in the west, what are the chances they have a Asia version with English subs that are uncensored? There are some NIS games that I want to play but I don't want to buy the NISA releases because of the censorship.
Imagine trying to resell the same game with a tiny bit of extra content, and going a step farther to censor it. Good thing you can safely skip out on this and not miss much.
Justin Really? That makes me kinda glad, since I got the original game not too long ago, and when I heard about Royal, I was like “Well damn, I should’ve waited!” 😅
It's once again places like Twitter and resetera crying over a small thing in a game that possibly the people who are complaining about these sort of things don't even play the game to begin with in the first place...
This does happen in Shinjuku especially in Kabukicho which the characters are in. Removing it also harms the game and also promotes a careless attitude to the actions of Touts as if they are harmless which they are not. The localization team has really done a disservice to the game, the fans and perceived that Shinjuku is a real safe place which is not even to tourist.
Not to forget: Shinjuku's red light district is also an LGTB hub (there's a very interesting article at Nippon.com that talks about that in detail). The scene at hand is an over exaggerated comedic scene poking fun at Shinjuku being sexually very extravagant or rather poking fun at something that happens there. Reminds me of a similar experience: few years ago I and some friends helped another friend move from Hamburg here in Germany to another town and we had some fun at the Reeperbahn during our last night there, basically the red light district of Hamburg. We were also hit on by a homosexual couple, pretty aggressively at that. Didn't think it was a big deal as we could eventually make it clear that we didn't swing that way. But the scene in Persona 5 was a really funny reminder of that. Seriously, it's ridiculous how people could describe that scene even as sexual assault or rape... People are so overly sensitive these days. Why don't they play some Mario or Kirby games if they search for something less offensive?
@@mikei6605 that's why it's so good you nitwit. The weird anime shit keeps the game from being as depressing as Persona 3 all the time, because it brings up shit like suicide, sexual abuse, and the goddamn prison industrial complex.
I can kinda understand why people didn't like the joke if we're going by the fact that Ryuji was the butt of that joke. Ryuji in general was treated like nothing more than a punching bag that I wonder if anyone even liked him. It just feels like his past of having an abusive father just gets sweped under the rug in favor of making him comedy relief to the point that I wonder why they gave him that backstory if they weren't gonna do anything with his character that's consent with that backstory. I'm not happy about the censorship either, but knowing how a lot of people love Ryuji, you can understand why even some non-SJW people like myself don't like the joke.. Not because of the gays, it's because Ryuji gets little to no love.
@@sparktwochristopher7240 I never finished his confidant and didn't know that. That's so sad. 🥺 I do feel like he is the comedic relief character, but that may be why some people like him. It can make him endearing. I do like that they gave him serious plot though and he evolved probably the most of the P5 cast I feel.
Stop censoring stuff for international releases. If you have a problem with these scenes, persona and the SMT series is not for you. I'm sorry but I want my toilet demon to shit on people who think this stuff is even an issue.
Companies seriously need to stop doing shit like this, how could they possibly not realise that this is just going to appease people who never played or liked the game and they're still not going to play or like it while it just hurts players who want the full experience of the game
We need to stop calling those NPC outrages "controversies". It is never a controversy, it's just a bunch of non-paying customers complaining the gaming industry doesn't use the media for their political propaganda.
Again, how is this 'political propaganda', may I ask? And that how can you really assume that none of the people raising concerns aren't customers/or don't have passion for the product?
@@rokka7188 How can you assume that so many people have a problem with the scene that it warrants change and censoring? The bottom line is this, if the scene bothers you that much don't play the game, don't ruin it for the rest of us who just want to play the game as intended. I'm a vegan, I don't walk into Burger King and demand they remove mean from their menu and only cater to my taste, I just go to places that cater to my vegan diet. If P5 doesn't cater to you, go play another one of the 1,000,000+ JRPGs out there
It's not just "NPC's" who didn't like those scenes, I have been playing the series for a while and found them distasteful, not enough to drop the game but enough to not like lol.
@@lordlubu3029 It's not about 'catering' to someone's fantasy, but by means of rather negative/predatory depiction of certain people, which media has the power to obviously influence people in that way. No, I don't just 'assume', people would complain for no reason and that as customer has right to complain about a company with enough protest, they have every right to do so and for the company to follow through that change. How the free market works, ye. And no, your analogy doesn't make sense and nor does this affect a single person. And again, how does this affect you, rather small change that you wouldn't have noticed otherwise. It'd be like a customer in Burger King, eating entirely different, meaty burger, would complain about changing something small in a vegan burger, by common request, that you aren't going to eat anyway or never will be.
I only have a small "sample", but those few gay men I know found the scene either just funny or kinda irrelevant to the total experience. Atlus has a relatively new community manager for the US region and she honestly seems completely unfit for that job. According to an interview those 2 scenes were the first 2 things she wanted to be changed in Royal, which is completely backwards. It isn't her job to demand change, only to be the middlewoman between Atlus and it's community. But whom did she listen to? The vocal crybabies that think that their feelings are more important than anybody else's and that want to be offended for others. You need to listen to your long-time costumers, to the loyal fanbase that have been there for years. Those who want to make Persona 5 a better game and not just change it for the sake of not offending people. Anyway, rant over.
I play games for fun so I do not mind these changes much, but Atlus really should ignore minor outrage over minor details of their games. I think the people who complain will not buy P5R either way including ressetera.
I already did but not because of censorship but because it's the same game but with different areas and stuff to do i didn't even finish the OG yet and P5S is a sequel to OG P5 so other then that if the next spin off isn't P5 Arena or some SMT V news than goodbye Atlus
I am a gay and honestly i hate censorship in games and media. I want the full experience and if that means you get 2 characters that may seem offensive to Americans i am fine with it. We gays need to grow a better back bone if this is what is Suppose to "Offend us".

I never understood why the critics found the gay-couple scenes offensive in the first place. I myself am gay, and I think those scenes are quite hilarious...
There needs to be a group that can send an message out to all its members when a game censors itself. That way there can be a counter to this minority that complain on twitter over their "offense"
@Source90000 Censorship of art is never an option. Period. (Unless its something illegal, of course) Not being Funny isn't an objective criticism. I found it funny, and many others did as well, so that argument is invalid. There is always someone that doesn't like this or hate that, you can't please everyone. It's a japanese cultural stereotype, yes, perhaps a offensive to some, yes, however most people are mature enough to understand that and just not take offense (since it's always taken not given) and move on with their life. When stereotypes about my nation, people, belief, color, sex and so on comes up you know what I do? I just see it as that and go on with my life, because either most of the time it doesn't apply to me, or if it does, I see some legitimate observation or humor to it, even if that's not the case, I just don't get butthurt. I have enough respect for other individuals' maturity that they can brush off cultural stereotypes that for many doesn't even reflect their own persona.
@Source90000 Can I just ask you why you'd see that and feel like it's *specifically targeting* gay people? I saw it and laughed a bunch because of how Ryuji was reacting. I have tons of gay friends, especially from high school. LGBT people used to be far more open to humor, stereotypical or not. Regardless of how the majority of Japan views homosexuality, there are TONS of LGBT people in Japan today, and someday their society will be far more accepting. On that topic, it's not so easy for a place like Japan to just "get with the times". They basically have one of the most deep-rooted and rich histories full of custom and tradition. It will take a while for them to be able to change their views on something that is foreign to them. Just like me, you, or anyone else when we don't understand something or it is new. I *cannot* see why these scenes would be offensive, if you or in fact many gay people are never like that. Sure, some are, but really you and others should ask yourself if it matters because you yourself are not like that. If you can't laugh at yourself, how can you laugh at anything? Like, just because the game doesn't go out of its way to have any LGBT characters, and just because the only real depiction there is is made fun of, doesn't mean it has to be one of if not the only thing fucking out cried about. It's not like I'm really bothered by it being changed but like, they take gay jokes out, but keep all the sexual and in general harassment done by Kamoshida in the game? Just because *its* taken seriously? When OBVIOUSLY THIS WASN'T MEANT TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY? When did video games have to reflect society and reality? When did video games start needing to cater to everyone's sensitivity? I'm one of the most sensitive and emotional people I've ever known in my life. I used to be bullied in school for many reasons including my weight when I was still very chubby, yet I don't get offended when I see bullying in any media, or when I see fat jokes, especially if they are meant to be humorous. Sorry for the long comment but I honestly can't stand the sudden outrage over the past few years especially, crying out for censorship in ANYTHING just cause it doesn't *properly depict gay people* or doesn't cater to any LGBT people, when there are FAR more serious themes. Video games are made for everybody.
@Source90000 And honestly, why are you saying who should be offended? If an audience lets a piece of media dictate how they feel, thats....really their problem.
In Europe a Austrian game seller advertised the game as 100% uncut . Could be true since the publisher in Europe for this game is not Atlus USA but Deep Silver .
Royal will feature localisations for other languages such as German, unlike P5 which only had English. So if Deep Silver was fully in charge, they kept the original lines in every language including English and didn't alter them like Atlus USA? We'll see.
This isn't "editing controversial dailouge". This is censorship of existing scenes with a game that atlus was fine with in 2017. It the "oh this hurts my fee-fees" group that they brought in when they brought in that person who has the same thought as the twitter mob. And it sounds like they are changing more than those gay men scenes. That article from IGN talks about atlus bringing back the Eng Va's to " re-record over existing dailouge" and change it to something else. Who knows what else this "oh its offensive to me" group is going to change.
@@kenrickkahn And if they did play it, they would have made a stink about it 2 and a half years ago when it came out. But they didn't, proving they don't play video games.
Addendum, for that Japanese website, Crayon Shin-Chan was in the west for a short period of time. It got the Ghost Stories treatment, which I was 100% for. I'm not against Woolseyisms, generally dubs become a million times better when the dialogue is altered to flow better for English speakers, but I am 100% against censored localization, and am 110% against pushing agendas that weren't there in localized versions. It is your job as a localization team to keep the dialogue as true to the original as possible without "all your base are belong to us." It is not your job as a localization team to censor things that make you personally uncomfortable.
It's funny because someone on Resetera claimed that the Phantom thieves are themselves SJW's because of their actions in the game and the "altright" have no reason to enjoy it in the first place. It's like they completely missed the point of the later half of the game where the Phantom thieves realized that doing their job for fame and glory instead of helping the weak and downtrodden is wrong. They learned that being SJW's is wrong lol
@@Klonoahedgehog Well, the irony is that those clowns at resetera didn't even play the game in the first place, obviously they don't know what the game is about thematically. I had a similar discussion with one of those deranged people on reddit yesterday. At some point you realize that the only thing they care about is their political agenda they try to push via lies and misinformation... They don't give a damn about the game itself. That's why such extremists like the resetera or Twitter clowns are such a cancer to the whole gaming industry... or any creative industry in general.
I was talking with some guys about this and we came to the conclusion that Atlus meant to re-translate this because they were not meant to be a stereotypical gay couple and they are supposed to showcase the kind of weird people that are commonly in a Red Light District. I put my trust in Atlus and the Shin Megami Tensei/Persona franchise speacially knowing that this kind of stuff happened with Catherine and the Full Body Re-Realease got to the west fully uncensored. I hope that they know that the kind of people who want to censor videogames do not represent a part of their costumers.
The only way to not have this localisation issues is that everyone learn Japanese and the dialogues must have Furigana (Small Hiragana that's allows to read Kanji)
@@MisterHeroman Uh, did you even play the game? Or watch someone play it? It's some of the wokest shit I've ever seen. Which also makes it rich how people are crying about SJWs changing this, when you're LITERALLY playing as social justice warriors in the game.
So being able to date your teacher is apparently ok according to the localization team then lol. Wouldn't be surprised if Atlus uses ResetEra as a basis for how to localize the games, since all of these "controversies" seem to stem from ResetEra. Seems really contradictory since the English version of Persona has kept the Japanese honorifics and sayings in the localization which is something that usually never happens, but now they feel the need to change some dialogue because it might not "fit in" with a western audience?
I still don't understand how the scene is supposed to be homophobic. The joke/point was that adults were acting in a predatory manner towards the teenage protagonists, and would remain the same regardless of orientation. Would the scene be heterophobic if the guys were straight and going after Anne?
So let me get this straight. Instead of fixing things that some *ACTUAL* fans wanted, such as fixing the God-awful pronunciations of some of the names, they not only doubled down on their pronunciation, but censored an inconsequential scene that not many players took offense to. On a separate note, they also are deaf to the outcry to port their games to other platforms. In both instances, I have only this to say: Brilliant f**king logic, ATLUS.
ATLUS: THE game company who adds problematic things to their games, gets flak for it, censors it later and eventually does it again later in the future, learning nothing.
That’s how it should be seen, but thanks to homophobic idiots who think they’re being validated, atlus felt the need to change it. Maybe in a perfect society....
@@foeof I'm going to have to partially disagree with you. When I want a collectors edition, I preorder as early as possible before it ends up much higher on Ebay. I honestly wanted the P5R theme(looks awesome IMO) and was more than willing to preorder on just that. Principles matter to me so I'll resist and go play my regular P5.
Not sure if you've played the game, but they're definitely not "the most prominent gay characters" in the game, if you take "gay" as an umbrella for LGBT. Lala isn't super important, but she's an actual named character with quite a bit of dialogue, and definitely positive representation. I agree with you though, my point just makes the controversy even stupider.
@azven nixen It's not. The japanese version has japanese text only. That aside, a couple of changed lines doesn't rob you of the full experience, it's not just ResetEra that was uncomfortable with that scene. The game doesn't revolve around that one scene anyways, I don't see the big deal
As a bi man with a male preference, this shit needs to stop. Our culture is getting more and more ok with censorship every day. People in and outside of the LGBT community need to realize that flamers are a real thing that exist. I was a Theatre minor in college and I hung around the Theatre & Art department often. There were a LOT of LGBT people in that field, some of them people that I liked being around and became friends with, others annoying, others creepy. The LGBT community are not all super nice people who always respect their boundaries. The idea that we can't ever portray ANY gay characters who are not super likable is absurd. And for christ's sake, it's not like Ryuji is a child either. He's 16. 16 is legal & socially acceptable literally everywhere except the United States. Yes, it is very creepy for an older man to hit on someone 20 years younger regardless if they're legal, but that's the whole point. Up until this point you've had zero issue with sexualizing 14yos in anime and now you think this is a good thing? Stop acting like you are the end-all be-all authority on sexual morality. Devs should just ignore the whining about the writing, and just make the game the way they want to make it. Censorship, on any level, should be made illegal and unethical.
It's not censorship since it's not state issued. They understood those scenes were stupid, they decided to correct them based on players feedbacks. If you can't spend a day without homophobic components, pretty much any comment section on the internet it there for you.
@@StephSinalco It's still censorship. If the artist/s intended the scene to be however the modified versions are that's how they would have been in the original release when it first came out in Japan. Since this change is only being made in the remake/updated version and then only in the US/English version of it that makes it extremely obvious to anyone with a brain that this is censorship.
@@mikei6605 If you think this isn't censorship then you really must not know English very well. Here's the definition of censorship for you: "the suppression or prohibition of any parts of books, films, news, etc. that are considered obscene, politically unacceptable, or a threat to security." Nothing in there about who's doing the suppression huh?
No matter what that something is film video game portrait someone well will complain about it I hope that atlas realises that. Let's start censoring someone's art. I hope persona 5 Royal sales take a hit
I heard about these changes a while ago and it’s safe to say I don’t like where the Persona localization team is going, with this and Tokyo Mirrage Sessions being censored in 2020.
Localisation most of the time is just used as a soft word to say it has been censored in some way, but since censorship is not popular they have to pretend like that's not what's happened
Just go the Modern Warfare 2 route, make those parts skippable for the perpetually triggered. They're actually a very good representation of the Japanese 'Okama' stereotype, which western denial or not, does infact exist. The 'internal content review team' should all be instantly let go and shouldn't exist. Editorialising games for foreign audiences absolutely should not be a thing, for every inch that one team takes, another takes a mile. It's a bad route to go down and literally robs the audience of a faithful representation of Japanese culture. You can't just editorialise reality out of existence.
I can't believe you unironically said that a stereotype exists. The meaning of the word "stereotype" is that it's an oversimplified, inaccurate view of the thing in question. Good thing you're not localizing the game.
@@Peasham Buddy get out your comfort zone. Sterotypes exist for a reason. Yes, flamboyantly gay men do exist and act similar to how Persona 5 portrays them. If you believe that people with stereotypical behavior don't exist, then your a bigger mouth breather than a Restera Admin.
@@samzilla567 Oh, definitely, stereotypes exist because people have prejudices against other people, can't say I remember claiming anything else. Which you've proven by insisting they're reality, despite the meaning of the work disagreeing with you. It's cute how you think other people are mouth-breathers.
@@Peasham obviously stereotypes exist. Whether they are accurate or not, they usually are at least based in a (sometimes exaggerated) reality. Just because some people fit the stereotype and others don't, doesn't mean the stereotype shouldn't exist. You need to pull your head out of your backside and realise that reality and art don't have to conform to what makes you feel comfortable.
Had Persona 4 gotten another re-release, Kanji would no longer be troubled by gender or sexual identity issues. He'd just be some dude who really doesn't like shower rooms. Let's back up and take a look at what just happened: A minority of people doxxed and threatened a company into retracting a couple distinctly, proud gay characters.
the game treated the sexual harassment of Shiho seriously, but treated the gay people looking predatory to minors as a joke. This does not only make light of sexual harassment against males, it reinforces and validates the negative perception homophobes have on gay people. Are you really that stupid to not understand this lol.
@@mikei6605 That's another thing that's stupid about all this. The main protag and company never gave their ages and looked about as old as the gay guys. Age clearly never factored into these so called "predators" decision. The protag and friend were approached because they were two dudes cruising the Red Light District. Plus, that excuse doesn't even fly on the most basic litmus test in that other instances of sexual harassment exist and are glossed over by both the perpetually outraged and the game itself (including one character who *knows* the protag isn't an adult) Hell, this isn't even the first Persona game that had that happen. The only thing that separates these two otherwise inconsequential characters and other instances of sexual harassment or even assault in the series are that these two guys are gay.
Another sad day another sad entry. I wish i had a strong enough opinion to flip others view points, but to be reasonable yes I get it there is aggressive gay stereotyping in the game, I can care less unless this is taken to attack a particular group. In this case it really is not meant to take any offense if anything if given any amount of time to actually analyze the scene it is meant to show other view points and how it can be taken from an outside view. While sure it looks like it is making fun, but in this instance its merely educational entertainment. Discomfort can be had sure, but hell we live in uncomfortable times where its just looked down upon to have a negative or positive opinion based on who you are around. I stand where I can live with the scene removed, but honestly if it has really become this much of an issue where censorship causes such friction. I'd rather Developers or some party just take the time to enable/disable content based on a screen choice at the start of a game because we can't just have a screen and understand content within this game may cause discomfort viewer discretion is to be advised and still have folks complain. Anyway enough ranting. TL;DR I don't care about the removed content. I care about the fact how stupid and prevalent this is becoming in the everyday.
I loved crayon shin-chan growing up with it on adult swim. As a kid this stuff didnt matter at all. But as an adult i find myself upset whenever i hear that other countries may be getting a diffrent product due to sensitivity or controversy. Its frustrating not to be able to enjoy what the creators made because a group of people raised there voice and said No for everyone in their country I find it unfair. It would be nice if censorship and the like was an optional patch or something like it, so everyone could choose for themselves. But sadly this is the world we live in 😥
Guess I'll either pirate this or buy it second hand. Worried for SMT V (if it ever even comes out). If they keep this up I'll be done with Atlus, just how I haven't touched a NISA game in years. This is coming from someone who has bought just about every SMT game since I first played DemiKids.
@@Peasham Well, that shouldn't be it. The source material should be entirely respected. Anime subtitling companies know they can't create a reputation of censoring cause its a lot easier for someone to release a fansub of anime than a game. If Talks Japan made it so modders could put in their own dialogue. AtlusUSA would have no choice, but to stay faithful.

Okay so... I'd already forgotten about this homophobic bullshit but yeah. They can tone it down all they like and call it "comedic" but I'm not spending money on something so brazenly homophobic. Plus, they apparently changed nothing about their portrayal of their female characters and how anne is pushed into taking off her clothes to serve as a distraction right after her and her friends being sexually harrassed by a teacher. Like holy shit, japan. Tone deaf much? I love jrpgs as a concept, I really do. And I've played so, so many jrpgs (from the final fantasies to the tales, trails, ateliers, etc). But I feel like the homophobia and misogyny are actually getting worse in recent years. Good for the localization team for trying to at least change the translation but there's only so much they can do. (Hate shin-chan, btw. It's just a way for creepy guys to feel better about their creepiness because "oh look, he's a child, it's cuuuute!" - makes me want to vomit.)

What was the change in Catherine FB? I'm curious.

Slight tangent to follow:
More on a porn addiction side, the brain gets bored of seeing the same sexual thing over and over and will respond more to novel things.

I'm a vegan, I don't walk into Burger King and demand they remove mean from their menu and only cater to my taste, I just go to places that cater to my vegan diet. @TwilightWolf032 Exactly. These NPCs don't even play the games they're criticizing. They just want to control everything.

There needs to be a group that can send an message out to all its members when a game censors itself.
That way there can be a counter to this minority that complain on twitter over their "offense"
@Source90000 Lmao just because you hate the scene doesn't give you or anyone the right to censor it just because you find it "problematic"
@Source90000 Censorship of art is never an option. Period. (Unless its something illegal, of course)
Not being Funny isn't an objective criticism.
Lmao really? Incels really get their panties in a twist over not getting their 2 minutes of homophobia and predatory behavior huh.
The people that take offense to such things wouldn’t buy the game either way. How long until these companies realize this?

SMTV is Nintendo Exclusive and they tend to mostly be against censorship right now.
@@KagatoAsuka That wont matter at all if Atlus USA themselves censors it
I cannot understand how translators even think about taking the liberty of altering the original material according to their sensibilities
it's racism.
That is literally what localizing something means, translating it to the sensibilites of another country.
@@Peasham Well, that shouldn't be it. The source material should be entirely respected. Localizing should only be translating texts and adapting what *must* adapted (because it would make no sense in the target language : for example wordplays, etc). We don't want onigiris to be turned into fucking hamburgers, and we also don't want their permanent censorship.
Besides, who are they to decide what is acceptable for the sensibilities of each country anyway ?
@@Soily9 Read the articles on this one : it's not *their* opinion, it's the general opinion. I'm glad they changed it and I'm definitely not the only one. If you can't play games that don't include homophobic scenes, I'm sad for you.
@@StephSinalco What does the "general opinion" even mean ?
Anime subtitling companies know they can't create a reputation of censoring cause its a lot easier for someone to release a fansub of anime than a game. If Talks Japan made it so modders could put in their own dialogue. AtlusUSA would have no choice, but to stay faithful.
This a game from Japan set in Japan so you can't say it's offensive, what's offensive is censoring Japanese culture, that's how they portray the characters then that's how it should stay. Also never listen to reset era.
redmagedragoon why though? I think making the game more enjoyable and less awkward is better than idk, “sticking to Japanese cULtUrE”? You know that’s an excuse. I’m half Japanese and I can tell you, Japan does not give a shit.
I get closer and closer to cancelling my pre order everyday
Atlus needs to get rid of the "Loco"-lization and get real localization.
They butcherd yakuza too
The canes were controversial .....years after the release of the original In witch no one seemed to care because if they did we’d have seen it on twitter They also never said a word about the anime so quite literally these are not fans
Controversial dialogue that only become controversial after some (questionable) babyraging people brought it up lmao, take this L Atlus, the essence of rebelling against unjust society in Akira is ashamed of you
I would think jrpgs and anime is not for you if you get that offended. There's nothing homophobic about it, it's a fucking joke.
Also stop moralizing over fictional characters that don't exist.
Might as well complain over Herbert the pervert in family Guy while you're at it.
I 'was' *SUPER* excited for Royal, but was rightly skeptical about this being censored at all, and yeah. I'm not buying this game.
Also, Shin-chan is fucking hilarious.
Honestly, this kind of shit is BS.
Why we get so damn butt hurt over every goddamn thing isn't just baffling, but fucking offensive in its pervasive hypocrisy.
sleepyprinny the game treated the sexual harassment of Shiho seriously, but treated the gay people looking predatory to minors as a joke. This does not only make light of sexual harassment against males, it reinforces and validates the negative perception homophobes have on gay people.
