Basically a cowboy out on the range has a vision, or an epiphany, of what his future would be if he doesn't get smart and change his ways. A cowboy's vision of hell- riding endlessly and unable to catch the thundering herd up ahead (the Devil's herd), which of course, is a cowboy's job. So it's a warning to him to change his way or this will be his fate.

I grew up on this song and on Johnny Cash. Its so good to see young people appreciate things from our past.
