As well as Steve Gaines on the guitar, who along with his sister Cassie, one of the back up singers, died in the plane crash

Ronnie VanZant is the lead singer and was the leader of the band. Allen Collins guitar. Gary Rossington rhythm and slide guitars. Leon Wilkeson bass. Artimus Pyle. drums, and percussion Billy Powell piano. Thier last performance was South Carolina’s Greenville Memorial Auditorium on Oct. 19, 1977, Free Bird lasted for 20 mins The next day boarded their plane that was unsafe the Fuel gauge was broke. The only way to check the fuel was with a stick. The plane ran out of fuel the engines were burning to rich and wasting precious fuel. One engine shut down then the other did. The plane went down over pine trees killing the members of the band, Ronnie Van Zant lead singer, guitarist Steve Gaines, vocalist Cassie Gaines, that day was the saddest day in Southern Rock. I was 20 when I heard about it on the radio. I cried like a baby.

We lost Gary Rossington a couple of weeks ago Guitarists with the straight black hair. He was the last original member, But the saddest part of it all in this video there is only one member still with us.. Drummer Artimus Pyle..

I was 20 when I heard about the plane crash I cried like a baby.
I was nearly 4 years old when this was filmed. I grew up listening to them, and I am thankful for having them. Thanks for reacting to this. Cheers from the USA.

You know you KNOW a song when you can anticipate every transition in the guitar solo easily and know exactly which it is going to happen seamlessly. When;s the last time you've heard a guitar solo that's almost the same length as two normal songs (five minutes). Also that I could hear this song another 500 times and not only not get tired of it but get hyped just like the first time. Imagine being there. I was about five years too young for my dad to bring me and it's one of the few that I'm really bummed I didn't get to see live.

When I moved to Naples, Florida from Rhode Island at 34 in 2004 first concert was Allman Brother and Lynyrd Skynyrd in Tamps great show
I had to sub because, this band is from my home state of Florida, growing up around the time this band hit it big in the 1970's, it was the greatest time of all.
In some regions of the US, this song being played in your car can get you out of a speeding ticket.

We still listen to lots of music and, even at our age, when this is played we can't sit still!! :)
I was 8 days from my 18th birthday, when I went to this show, still brings goosebumps and to think I can watch something that I saw 46 years ago, great review !

The song Free Bird was witten by Allen Collins and lead singer Ronnie Van Zant. It was inspired when Allen had a fight with hia GF Kathy. She asked him if he would remember her if she left.

I was there! They were called Day on the Green concerts with many bands playing that day. I was seated up very high in the nose bleed seats and it was just my second concert but one that I’ll never forget. And to think that the horrible plane crash would happen just a few months later makes it even more special.
The mid to late 1970s were so much fun and had such freedom! ❤

Ronnie Vincent. One of the greatest front man in rock history. His voice is pretty good technically. But he does sound like no other. And his stage presence is so bad ass. He does not look like a guy you want to get into a bar fight with. Even if he was short in stature.

Ronnie said “Play it pretty for Anaheim” when I saw them at Angel Stadium the same year where they were the headliners and the show started as the sun went down. I believe at this concert there were so many girls, because Peter Frampton was the headliner. It was an amazing night.
