I received some colored laminated wood from Frog Blanks to try out. This is my second attempt to use the samples both in a Christmas Ornament. After all the 2019 Christmas Ornament Challenge is open for submissions until November 30.
My key to using this wood well for a Christmas ornament is for a segmented ornament. It is critical to rotate the wood so that the plys are running vertically before cutting segments.
This ornament is about 2" diameter and 6 inches long. I used a blue Frogwood and cherry for segments plus maple veneer, walnut, and spalted box elder. 56 total pieces of wood.
Please get your ornament ready for this year's the Christmas Ornament Challenge. It does not have to be fancy or perfect - this bell is neither fancy or perfect. However, it is a nice addition to the Christmas Ornament Challenge.
To enter the challenge, please go to www.AsWoodTurns.com/Challenges
Enjoy!

Wonderful, just wonderful Alan !!! Don't you love it when you can expose the wonder inside ? Or put another way - Don't you love it when a plan comes together ? -Mike
Another way - I love it when a plan evolves into something pretty.

Thank you Mark. Will you be entering the Christmas Ornament Challenge?

That’s a beautiful ornament Alan. I really like the shape and that Frogwood accent in the middle is beautiful.
I have some Frogwood that I’ll be turning sometime soon. Your comment that it is harder than cherry was helpful. It really looks like it will be fin to turn.
It is well worth trying.
You are welcome

I love it. I also love the Christmas sentiment you expressed. It seems we are all shying away from using the word Christmas and the absolute reason for the season. Thanks for that as well. I have heard it 3 times so far this year and it is disturbing to me. Good job. good teacher and I love the way you think.
Thanks for your comment

Great description and video of the process! I especially like the gluing up pf the segment pieces explanation, particularly the use of the bolt. Do you have a link to making the twisted eyelets?
You got it!
Thank you Stuart

Very nicw! Before I watched this I thought the Frog wood was lucite or glass. I need to try some someday.
It would be possible to make the center with some acrylic resin. But I like wood.

Beautiful pieces Alan. How heavy did they end up.
Bert, I did not feel the need to weigh it. With the hollowing, it was very light.
