Stabilization To The Rescue For Severely Spalted Bowl

I received this wood in a club wood exchange. On examining it, I noted some great spalting color and figure. But also noted a lot of very soft punky wood. I can treat small amounts of punky wood with CA glue. But this had a lot.
I rough turned it. Dried it in an over. Then stabilized it by soaking it in Cactus Juice, a heat activated resin under vacuum for about two days. Then let it soak for another two days before hardening the resin in the oven.
Then I could finish turn the bowl much like a remounted green turning
My bowl is 6 by 2 inches finished with wipe-on poly.
Enjoy.

Well done Alan. I've never used cactus juice. No punky wood to work with fortunately. Your piece turned out quite nicely. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and continue to stay safe.🙂🙂
You're welcome Glen

Nice bowl and save Alan.
Thanks 👍
Alan
Nice save! Thanks!!
No problem! Thanks.

I nearly always get surface resin after heating the impregnated wood. This seems to be regardless of how dry the wood is, though I hope your theory is right as then, I can improve my drying process for a better outcome. I had always thought it was the resin expanding with the heat, forcing it to the surface. Some trials required, I think. A dust mask or strong extractor are a good idea when turning stabilised wood.
Interesting! Definitely a dust mask as it stinks. Thanks for your observations.
Alan
Really turned out nice! But honestly would you that again considering the time and expense involved? Good learning experience though. Thanks.
That is always the question before turning.
Alan
The resin stinks because you did not allow it to off-gas. Other than that it looks nice!
Do not know how long it would take since when turning, it keeps exposing more resin.
