Whitney Houston is always the best, yet can we just appreciate both singers in their own unique style. Everyone has their own opinion in every singer of what they hear. I liked both Sohyang and Whitney, so I honestly don't believe in favoritism who sings better than the other.
Their style is very different. Both are the best in the world. The difference between the Olympic athletes' records, which is a perfect measure of time, is less than a second. Humans cannot detect the difference in their abilities with the naked eye. Even more difficult than that, it is impossible to distinguish the best in the world when it comes to music.
So Hyang is indeed a great singer but compare to Whitney...??? Whitney is a legend singer who have a great influence in music industry all over the world. She is the Voice after all and one of the member of vocal trinity. So Hyang however is also great singer which her rich tone voice. I don't mean to compare the two but Whitney will always be a legend and nothing touch her, so as So Hyang. Whitney is Whitney and So Hyang is So Hyang. Just appreciate both ladies in inspiring and giving them respects.
First of all art isn't just about high singing. Every artist has a journey and unique way of expressing it. Stop comparing and just focus on what we can learn from them, even if it is from a technical point of view. Whitney was a unique artist and so is sohyang. But if you want to compare them fro. A technical perspective Then give some clarity. People prefer different voices, Both singers are using differnt approaches to sing, sohyang has a mix belt(twang) approach that's why she can sing higher than Whitney, Whitney has a fuller mid belts because she is using only the mask and has a raised soft pallet when singing hight and therefore that rich tone. Both are different and use different techniques to sing. So stop spreading hatred and just focus on what you can learn from them. Both are amazing And I have learnt a lot just listening to them sing live And I have tried to use both of their techniques and both work for different genres. Whitney could never sing like sohyang so can't sohyang like Whitney Why should they? They are two different people and both are amazing. They have different instruments, techniques, ideals and a lot more.... Although when it comes to art Whitney has produced more everlasting art than sohyang has done I wish to hear more originals from sohyang.
Whitney. It felt like whoever made this was biased and wanted to give Sohyang the edge. I think Sohyang is very good but there's just something in her tone that sounds... catlike? I do think Sohyang is more capable on the upper notes but her belts can be somewhat whiney (It really stands out at F5-G5). All in all, I like a bigger more rounded voice so I go with Whitney.

In the upper belting range starting from F5 and up is Sohyang's territory. D5 though E5 is tied for me. Anything is the middle belting range lower than C#5 is Whitney's territory. I can go either way for there head voice register. The low note register is where both of them kinda slack a little for me, but they never were fully developed in that register and honestly don't really need it anyways. A vocal fach is mostly used for classical, opera and operetta, with some musical theatre cross over. It depends on the singers tessitura and the range in the second set of vocal chords. Whitney had a low tessitura, its even a little low for a mezzo, especially later in life. Her 'head voice' was tubular, and lacked movement within the body, and sounded forced above a top C, which she hardly ever did. Its not a criticism, i loved her voice as a pop singer, and being a soprano doesnt make you good, or better, any more than not being one makes you bad. All it means is that you probably shouldn't audition for the Queen in 'The Magic Flure' or the doll in 'Hoffman'.

This girl has neglected through the years all the others elements of her tecnique and today is trademark is only her super-belting ability (the fault is of the fans that worshipped too much this ability) far from entering in the same League of the Legends. Surely talented and the best belter ever, but her lapses are obvious: horrible low and mid-registers, you can hear her pitchiness, absence of melisma, plus her bad enunciation, head voice, eventough high, small and airy, chest voice virtually nonexistent, sounding nasal most of the time, her high belts have a pinchy, harsh, buzzy resonance (a little shrill and overly - her tone is not so loved), like something stucking in her throat and she cannot phrase in her middle area with clarity and her lower register somtimes is just amplified air, not agile in changing easly register, because Sohyang has high notes but her scale has a huge gap int the middle and in the lower part of the her voice. It lacks the trumpet-like quality tha great technical singers generally have, and her voice at the higher pitches, is screechy.

Whitney is a better overall singer, but Sohyang is better in the upper belts because she's a soprano belter. Whitney is more or less a mezzo soprano but a very capable one.
Both are lyric sopranos. The difference is Whitney has a more oldschool technique with more core and depth. Whitney's technique is better. Sohyang is still great though, but she could have more depth if she trained it.

Her problem is low notes and underdeveloped chest voice therefore her midbelt is atrophied, hollow. She's incredible in upper belts and headvoice. In terms of resonance Whitney can produce optimum resonance or Squillo and only few singers in mainstream music could do that. While Sohyang has Chiarro but she has no scurro therefore she couldn't produce optimum resonance. I hope she retrain her techniques and improve her low notes and underdeveloped chest voice. Other than that, she's already a star-rated vocalist along with Whitney, Mariah, Barbra, Aretha, Patti, Beyonce etc according to critic of music.

It's not, sohyang clips are overly produced and possible auto pitch correction microphone, you can tell the mic has echo and voice sound abit artificial.
Whitney's voice really shines in the middle, packing so much power from Bb4 to Eb5. Her modal voice starts to thin out at E5, after which her vocal production becomes inconsistent, at times good, at times strained. Her falsetto also starts to get strained at G#5. These are all indicators that she was a mezzo-soprano, contrary to what a lot of people believe. SoHyang's voice picks up power at E5. Someone pointed out that Whitney wins below F5 and SoHyang gets it above F5. This video is a good comparison between a soprano and a mezzo-soprano.
A mezzo would NOT have such weak lows. Whitney's technique was flawless and she could barely maintain solid lows. If she were a mezzo her lows wouldve been waaaay fuller and more projected. Her voice doesn't thin out after E5, that simply isnt true at all. She can maintain top notes of E5-G5 without losing weight or color. A mezzo would thin out after E5 and wouldn't have that ease that she had above E5

She even has difficulty singing phrases with D5-E5 notes. Thus, she had to lower the key and slow down the tempo of DWAHIA when singing it live. A soprano wouldn't have a problem navigating through the climactic phrases of that song live. Also, I doubt Whitney could even sing songs like Through the Fire or Ain't No Way in their original key. But yeah you can keep parroting what others say that she's no mezzo because she had weak lows. I'm tired of reading that nonsense.

You can’t really compare SoHyang to Whitney, Mariah or Celine because if it wasnt for those three women, SoHyang wouldn’t even have the vocal approach that has become her signature. Those are her biggest influences and it shows. I love SoHyang because her control over her mixed voice is unparalleled. But that doesn’t trump the agility, tone, and seamless register switches of Whitney, much less the entire vocal trinity. The comments really highlight this current generation being so fixated on what’s current that there’s little reverence or appreciation of the people from the past who influenced and blatantly surpassed them in terms of skill.

She has the technique, she is one of the best upper belter, has projection and resonance down to a G4 in midbelts, and supports her notes down to G3 even with her high tessitura. Sohyang, Lara Fabián and barbra st have better technique (the perfect technique in the world)therefore they are better vocalists than the other singers who have semi perfect techniques. A vocal fach is mostly used for classical, opera and operetta, with some musical theatre cross over. It depends on the singers tessitura and the range in the second set of vocal chords. Whitney had a low tessitura, its even a little low for a mezzo, especially later in life. Her 'head voice' was tubular, and lacked movement within the body, and sounded forced above a top C, which she hardly ever did.
Its not a criticism, i loved her voice as a pop singer, and being a soprano doesnt make you good, or better, any more than not being one makes you bad. All it means is that you probably shouldn't audition for the Queen in 'The Magic Flure' or the doll in 'Hoffman'.

This girl has neglected through the years all the others elements of her tecnique and today is trademark is only her super-belting ability (the fault is of the fans that worshipped too much this ability) far from entering in the same League of the Legends. Surely talented and the best belter ever, but her lapses are obvious: horrible low and mid-registers, you can hear her pitchiness, absence of melisma, plus her bad enunciation, head voice, eventough high, small and airy, chest voice virtually nonexistent, sounding nasal most of the time, her high belts have a pinchy, harsh, buzzy resonance (a little shrill and overly - her tone is not so loved), like something stucking in her throat and she cannot phrase in her middle area with clarity and her lower register somtimes is just amplified air, not agile in changing easly register, because Sohyang has high notes but her scale has a huge gap int the middle and in the lower part of the her voice.
It lacks the trumpet-like quality tha great technical singers generally have, and her voice at the higher pitches, is screechy.

Her problem is low notes and underdeveloped chest voice therefore her midbelt is atrophied, hollow. She's incredible in upper belts and headvoice.
In terms of resonance Whitney can produce optimum resonance or Squillo and only few singers in mainstream music could do that. It's not, sohyang clips are overly produced and possible auto pitch correction microphone, you can tell the mic has echo and voice sound abit artificial.
Whitney's voice really shines in the middle, packing so much power from Bb4 to Eb5. Her modal voice starts to thin out at E5, after which her vocal production becomes inconsistent, at times good, at times strained. Her falsetto also starts to get strained at G#5. These are all indicators that she was a mezzo-soprano, contrary to what a lot of people believe. SoHyang's voice picks up power at E5. Someone pointed out that Whitney wins below F5 and SoHyang gets it above F5. This video is a good comparison between a soprano and a mezzo-soprano.
A mezzo would NOT have such weak lows. Whitney's technique was flawless and she could barely maintain solid lows. If she were a mezzo her lows wouldve been waaaay fuller and more projected. Her voice doesn't thin out after E5, that simply isnt true at all. She can maintain top notes of E5-G5 without losing weight or color. A mezzo would thin out after E5 and wouldn't have that ease that she had above E5

Sohyang is well-known as a perfect vocalist in Korea but her lapses are obvious: horrible low and mid-registers, you can hear her pitchiness, absence of melisma, plus her bad enunciation, head voice, eventough high, small and airy, chest voice virtually nonexistent, sounding nasal most of the time, her high belts have a pinchy, harsh, buzzy resonance (a little shrill and overly - her tone is not so loved), like something stucking in her throat and she cannot phrase in her middle area with clarity and her lower register somtimes is just amplified air, not agile in changing easly register, because Sohyang has high notes but her scale has a huge gap int the middle and in the lower part of the her voice.
It lacks the trumpet-like quality tha great technical singers generally have, and her voice at the higher pitches, is screechy.
Sohyang is probably the best belter ever but she doesn't have more to offer.

You can’t really compare SoHyang to Whitney, Mariah or Celine because if it wasnt for those three women, SoHyang wouldn’t even have the vocal approach that has become her signature. Those are her biggest influences and it shows. I love SoHyang because her control over her mixed voice is unparalleled. But that doesn’t trump the agility, tone, and seamless register switches of Whitney, much less the entire vocal trinity. The comments really highlight this current generation being so fixated on what’s current that there’s little reverence or appreciation of the people from the past who influenced and blatantly surpassed them in terms of skill.

She has the technique, she is one of the best upper belter, has projection and resonance down to a G4 in midbelts, and supports her notes down to G3 even with her high tessitura. Furthermore, her breath management and transitioning is out of this world. She is not the best in angility, but her runs are are quite good too. She can definetly hold up to the vocal trinity, and as I mentioned, she is definetly amongst the top. One of the most well rounded vocalists Ive ever heard of
